As the title states, is there currently a way to upgrade the Verizon Wireless Motorola Q (black version) to Windows Mobile 6?
Regards in advance
-Evomac-
I'll second that question --
I should definitely read more on this forum before asking such dumb questions, (hi, I'm new!) but curiosity is killing me...
How cross-platform/generic are these OS?
I notice that there's a different release of WM6 Pro for every different HTC model, which scares me...
I was toying around with the idea that the T-mobile Dash (aka HTC Excalibur) is a 'smartphone' running WM6 Standard.
That puts it in the same ballpark as the Q, they're both 320x240 w/ no touchscreen!
However, the S620/excalibur/whatever runs a T.I. OMAP850 cpu on GSM;
whereas the Q features an Intel XScale PXA272, and CDMA
As a guy who has a Verizon Q which will likely be left at wm5 forever, I *really* want to try something out, but really am not excited about bricking my phone.
anyone have any great ideas?
I still have return time left on my phone so I would be willing to try something. Since you can almost be certain Verizon won't upgrade the OS.
I've been searching for a motorola Q wm6 ROM myself as well. No luck anywhere so far... ideas?
My girlfriend has a Q, even though I adviseid her not to buy it because of it's wm5 (not even professional) shortcomings for a smartphone, and now she complains about the phone contstantly. Yeah, the features she wants are all wm6, such as real windows live, etc.
anyone have a solution for Moto Q to WM6???
MOTO Q can be cooked
I just found a monster flash file wit an .SBF extension.
I renamed it to OS.NB (changing only the extension) and was able to dump the OS and OEM.
So I believe it is possible to cook it.
Personaly, For a smartphone it has good hardware; and being a motorola, the entire phone is the antena. with propper software this can eventualy be a good device...
I have the OS dump; and I am sure that with the rest of the stuff I found on (like RSDLite) it is possible to cook the Q.
Trouble is that We NEED someone who can make a kitchen for us.
A kitchen to do this sure would be nice... Bit it looks as if it'll never happen.
It's just sad. The Moto Q is a good phone, but being stuck with the crappy Windows Mobile 5 OS makes it a piece a crap these days. I'm finding more and more software that just won't work because of the dinosaur of an OS it has.
I think this will be my next project. now i just need to find a motorola q, so i can get to work on it. it was a good device, for its time. and it was so easy to type on, size was all there.
i just never been able to get it to dump, never try to rename the files. i will have to give this a shot, but i am sure it can be done.
I used the Scoter Kitchen. Renamed the Monster flash file to OS.nb and ran it. and I was able to get all of the files out of there.
Scoter Kitchen.

All different Motorola Flash files, all different phones all different carriers. take a look at it.

not at the moment. its in progress.
Are we any closer to a ROM update? I appreciate the time you are taking out of your personal lives to investigate this.
I have a Q11 and I could dump my firmware is very easy,
The program creates a folder with the "dump" and a .bin file
if you want to cook a rom just need to modify the folder called dump
Then you must convert the dump file. to a bin file with the same program
Has anyone been able to make any progress with the Q?
I'm also very interested in this. I have a Verizon Q (black) that has been reflashed to Bell mobility in Canada and I am using it on the MTS cdma network in Manitoba. I'd really like to have wm6 on this thing, as wm5 is proving quite clunky...
me 2 waiting for something......
Any rom or monster files?
i know this thread is old but i have a moto q9m
just give me any windows mobile 6 rom for the moto q
how can i backup my entire phone before flashing?
I bought Moto Q black last year (yes, im a noob), and had no clue wm5 sucked so bad, and... no upgrade options at all, even for $$$ ??? wow
so, just to bump this thread, and say thanks and hope and well, maybe get another phone,,, blah blah... oh.alsdkfha;lksdhflkj
anyway... here's hoping, after all, it is really really cool, great feel, buttons are great, all that, wonderful phone, though i'm sure i paid too much for it, flashed to cricket (new in box) for 89$ ebay
an addendum to the question/project:
can it be flashed to boost? (for the $25 plan)?
thanks and good luck
if nothing comes of this, what phone would you recommend that is 'like' the moto q black (the rubberized grip is great, the little wheel is really cool, i like the brick style, not flip or slide, fits so good in my hand, and so on, what a phone... tried an htc phone recently but the touch was non sensitive and it couldn't hold a charge long enough, though that is just that, also it seemed it was made for a small asian woman's hand)
Hi Admins,
Could you please add a forum section with LG KS20?
Many Thanks!
Who's the Manufacturer of the LG device. Is it HTC? No? Then I don't see that happening.

The Siemens was made by HTC (same as some HP devices, and the X1) so it has very similar IPL/SPL code.
The Atom was because there was some confusion over who was making it, but, that is the exception, not the rule.
With all the respect I have for "xda" developers community, what's the purpose of refusing a new forum section based on the brand when you're a forum that grew up enough to become a reference in ppc developement ? Sentences like "Is it HTC? No? Then I don't see that happening." are either trolling (if that's the case, well done ), or belong to another time in another place. To me it sounds a little like "hey you lg niggas, we accept you in our htc bus, but just stand in the back".
I thought we were here to share knowledge to serve the whole ppc community. If I was an admin, I would consider making sections when enough requests (but, I'm not admin and moreover, may be there are not enough now, I can't say) (well, to be honest, I pretty agree that there's not so much ks20 threads).
What I know is that ks20 hardware is pretty similar to kaiser's one (up to the point that older versions of kaiser's android booted on ks20), that with a lot of work we finally managed to build tools to extract rom files (I don't speak about batch files, but something similar to nbinfo/nbsplit/nbmerge), that enabled us to build a kitchen, for a part thanks to xda community, and that it would serve ks20 community for more simplicity to regroup them.
If you think that there's not enough demand to do it, I've got absolutely no problem with that and I totally understand it, but please don't use htc arguments or else you'll see that one day, the brand-segregated minority will revolt, compose a call pointing their phone towards htc users and turn them all out into pop-corn

No I'm not a Troll, I moved out from under my bridge long ago.
I'm reiterating what I've seen spoken by the mod numerous times.
The simple fact is not that we hate or a "phonecist" towards LG. Its a matter of Drawing a line in the sand to help with Administration, Server Load and Bandwidth Usage Issues.
If we start adding none HTC phones, we will have a harder time keeping the noobs calm and the spammers away. It will require and even bigger server with even more bandwidth and that cost more money.
We all know the founders really aren't making money of this venture so since its their bank accounts that have to cover the costs if Donation, Store and Ad revenue don't. So they can say only HTC device if they please.
So don't play the "race card." You look silly. If The founders don't want to add non HTC devices they don't have to, and any amount of wishing and asking and complaining will not change that.
But I bet you could find/make a place like XDA for LG or Samsung.
I totally understand your point and don't blame the admins, they do what they want with their forums. It's just that when you start adding exceptions, you open a breach and then it's difficult to explain why you do this and not that.
I hope my post was not taken seriously (I think I've put enough smileys to show it was not written that way).
As to make/join another forum, problem here with ks20 is that it's the only Windows Mobile device from lg, so in a way, we're far closer to xda community than classic lg mobile community. After all, we're just lost orphans begging for a place in this world

Right Which is why they don't allow any exceptions.
I wasn't singling you out, just posting same reasons why you won't see LG devices here soon, or Samsung for that matter.
Well what you could do is, call HTC and LG and have one "acquire" the other, then all would be happy because the admins could make a LG KS20 forum.
I don't think it's just that it's LG.
The T-Mobile Shadow is HTC though they still won't make us a forum.

Actually...Never mind it's there, but not under smartphones, it's under the PPC with 3 sections. that's why i never saw it.
I've got a KS20 as well.
LG has released their 2nd Windows Mobile based device, the Prada II.
Hopefully if they keep going we'll get an LG forum up and running soon!
yeah there will never be a lg forum, this site is htc only. so there will nenver be any non htc devices here
when i got my omnia i asked and they said no, and eventually accepted that. i then wen on to create my own forum similar to this one but it will include all windows moblie devices
its in my signature below. there is already a lg ks20 forum with unlocking details and a few roms for it in the roms section
ill look forward to seeing you there

A forum starts with one person who is enthusiastic about their phone. How do you think this forum got started? Twenty thousand people all got together and decided to make a forum that grew into 2 million ? No it started with I'm sure, one enterprising knowledgeable person and a garage server.
Short version ? Servers are cheap, bandwidth comes from donations, if you think that there are so many interested people, then have at it. I don't think that trying to ( bully ? ) your way into an avowed HTC forum is the way. Others have done it themselves.
http://www.lg-vu.com/
http://www.mygreatphone.com/forum/lg-forum/
And many more for LG phones.Just look for them. It is the enthusiasm of the people that make a great forum, not hijacking an already great forum for your own personal use
Those forms are not as well populated as the Chinese LG forum (www.52lg.com). Main disadvantage of it is that the released roms are all in Chinese.
Ok...With all that said...who wants to put together an LG PPC forum?
As all we that know that Nokia source code now 100% open.
can u make a firmware developer forum for nokia where the developers can made changes in nokia firmwares like windows mobiles?
Is it possible that
I can make the forum, I will buy the domain, hosting everything, just suggest me a good domain name and I will take care of the rest
which one u want like xda forum or other?
i think its good and there is not any domain name like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia
Oh if you want a sub-domain under xda-developers, then there's nothing to buy, the admins will have to look into this.
And although Symbian is opensource now, Nokia firmware development is unlikely to happen, because the Z drive on Nokia devices, which is the ROM, is locked. And I don't think anyone has succeded in unlocking it permanently so far.

Oh thats cool then, the last Symbian I used was N95 8GB, it was hard to do then. Well the admins already said XDA-Developers will only be dedicated to HTC devices, so a Nokia sub-forum is unlikely to happen. But if you can get some developers who are interested in this, then I can make a separate website for it, something like nokia-developers.com or symbian-developers.com
HTC only?
If you scroll down the forum homescreen you'll see other WinMo/Android devices outside of HTC. Maybe the question was asked in the wrong way to the admins. I don't think we're looking to really mod Nokia devices. However, as Nokia begins to release more devices with "Intel" chip-sets the development community may see some shift towards working on Nokia hardware/firmware.
What we currently want is to do is explore and develop the new and open source Symbian ^1 ^2 ^3 ^4 and ^5 into ROM's that load onto our beloved HTC devices.
Compatibility and open-ness are driving the new information economy. Symbian has some pretty darn cool stuff like N-Gage gaming, support to play "Digital Copy" movies, etc...
Imagine being able to just transfer your digital copy movie over to your HD2 or TouchPro 2 because your PC thinks your device is a 5800. Right now you'd have to convert the digital copy through some illegal method.
Apple locks down their devices to prevent us from doing this kind of work. We're a community of open, intelligent and capable minds/people. This community should not be so "Apple" like and prevent open development.
I'm also suggesting, just as there was on the Rhodium page for Android, a bounty issued for Symbian ROM development.
A Nokia forum wouldn't make sense. Nokia only owns a majority of the Symbian platform. What we really want is a Symbian forum on XDA. We want this so that we have a single source of information on an important topic where we know that we truly have experts working on the issues and solutions. XDA could experience major growth by doing this and attracting Symbian developers. Symbian is closely related to WinMo as it is so this wouldn't be a daunting task for developers. C++
To be honest, I don´t think this will happen.

Good Luck
Please post on the site what phones should be added and what forums should be there
http://symbian-developers.com/
Such a shame there obviously isn't much interest in the newest Nokia phones.
I really think with the N8 and C7 Nokia took a big step forward and I'd love to see them get the recognition they deserve for it.
Unfortunately they might be a year or two too late.
I think, if there was a Symbian Forum on XDA-Developers, it might be way more successful than an external site. So I very much +1 the TO request.
BTW: Does anyone know if apps for the N8 and C7 are interchangable?
Greetings.
PS: Can a software branding be totally removed from the C7 / N8?
Hi, I really love this site and was wondering why there is no nokia/symbian support? It would be cool if I could get support for all my devices in one site. Thx
I think that's quite an interesting idea, In what way can you mod a symbian phone though ??
Symbian platform usually uses Linux. So like Android. But is Symbian really worth looking into to customize? Now a Symbian App section might be a good idea. There should be some kind of poll at least.
check these for symbian mods and see if symbian is worth modding

We are a global network for WM and Android Devices..True that we started the i-phone devs, but it was after a lot of considerations..As it is we have a terrific amount of phones lined up on the forum home page.We never thought of creating the Legacy devices forum over here, but due to constant advancement of technology and thus the devices too,we cut short the forum main page and a Legacy devices Sub forum was created...Still,the main page list is too big to end.I doubt Svetius would include a Nokia/Symbian Sub-forum on XDA..As it is Nokia also has a tougher and long line-up of its devices...It would create a clutter on already overcrowded XDA..Also users may ask to include more and more devices of the Symbian Os thus inviting Sony-Ericsson and other players on the Symbian too..So its gonna be a strict NO from my side[A hardcore WM loyalist]..If it does happen,it would be a sister project[forum] just like i-Phone developers...
PM the Admins and may be they'd have a look into this!
"In what way can you mod a symbian phone though ?? "
just look at hyperx and faenil roms, the samsung i8910 with 600/700mhz (latest mod of hyperx clocks the cpu to 950mhz) is same or faster than hd2 with 1 ghz (in custom wm or android roms). It would be great to have a device like hd2 with a less hungry OS like symbian, and a good browser too ,in the end what matters is the taste and how biased ppl are , imho hd2 great hardware with crap OS (wm), android (not so crap but much hungry OS), and symbian (apart the browser) great OS but crap hardware (apart i8910).
noo.. I am pretty sure that there is a reasoin that since 2 years ago only Nokia is producing phones with Symbian.. when I got my first phone (a Nokia) there was Samsung SE.. etc. with symbian.. To be honest.. Symbian is BAD. not worth paying for.. unless you need a cheap smart phone.. eg Nokia 5230 ot 5233 etc..
at least add meego forums plz
just for curiosity, have you ever seen/used one of the custom roms in i8910 or just talking about like others do?
well i personally think put all the HTC into one sub section then HTC users choose which phone.. its just way too much HTC on the main forum page.
This was mainly HTC forum before they started to add another popular devices, so i doubt you will see that.
this idea is so good i broke out the nuron to reply lol it took twelve minutes j/k but really it did lol

exactly. xda = htc. which was only wm phones until the rise of android, and the long hesitation for the wp7. the only reason android is covered on other devices is because htc started carrying android.
but im one of the people that thinks they are adding too many devices to the forums, and should stick with just htc hardware.
I created this thread as a way for everyone to get to know each other by name. We're a tight knit group of users in here, and I thought it would be appropriate for us to know each other by name. In the recent weeks, I've noticed an increase in bickering. Experience has taught me that when people know each other on a name to name basis, it creates a more personal atmosphere, where people are less likely to show disrespect to one another.
As your Moderator, my goal in the forums is to create a peaceful atmosphere, where people aren't at each other's throats. It takes away from the true purpose of XDA, and also pushes people away. Let's all work together to improve the overall atmosphere of these forums. After all, we're all here for the same reason; a passion for development, cell phones, and sharing thoughts and ideas.

Moving to android gave me more control over the phone than I had with the iPod. I know a little about editing widgets for android as well as figuring out problems which occurs.
the name is Gabriel. Been an Android user since 2010, most of my devices are Samsung so I am comfortable flashing ROMs/Kernels for these devices. I also used Sony Ericsson and HTC devices. My device history below:
Captivate I896 & I897
HTC Desire
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
Samsung Infuse 4G I997R
Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE I727R
Samsung Galaxy S Glide I927R
I always stick on stock ROMs. But since I've been tied through developers' work, I have dedicated time to test their ROMs/kernels, use them until I know it is capable of being a daily driver, then go back to stock....

HTC Merge - SOLD
Galaxy S Glide (Rogers version of the Captivate Glide)

I went from my, like 4 years old, HTC Dream to the Glide(which was so hard to root in comparison to the Glide). Also I like how I'm not the only one who owned a HTC Dream before <3
Hope to see some nice ROMs in the future
Hello from Fabrizio,
Rome - Italy.
Captivate Glide is my first android ever and i'm totally in love with it.
Mike from Toronto, Canada.
Had a Xperia x10 that went from 1.6 to 2.3, and got the Glide after. I still have a want for a physical qwerty. Glide is rooted and running custom OSI Mood ROM from Carpe.
I run a QA dept for a mobile app company and I have a lot of devices at my work (Nexus, Note, HTC's, Xperia's, etc..) and I still like my Glide over all of them.
I don't post much, but read a lot. I find people tend to post too much about nothing.
I also have an Asus Prime.
Looking forward to having ICS come out!

This is my first Android Device. I'm enamored with the flexibility of both the OS and the hardware.
Previous devices of any importance were a WinMo 6.5 LG eXpo and before that a feature phone LG Vu, over the course of the past 7 years. This community is important to me from both a support and a customizing aspect. Thanks!
Hi, I'm Austin... From Fredericktown Mo USA
This is MY second android device (not counting the two of my parents)
I had,
Iphone 3g (horrible)
HTC aria (awesome little thing)
Traded that for iphone 3gs
Traded that for my glide
I also have a Samsung Captivate and Moto Atrix 4g in my family...
I try not to post too much, but if there's a question that I have, or someone has a question that I have the answer to, I'm not shy.

Hi All. My Name Is John and I live in Montreal Canada.
I used to have a Samsung Omnia running Windows 6.1 Phone and before that an Axim X51V. Got Tired of crappy touch screens so I told myself I needed a Physical Keyboard so Hello Glide!
I also work in QA for a Computer company Though I deal in the Microsoft Certification of our drivers.
I installed a Rom on my X51V from XDA many years ago and now with my Glide. I like learning how things work and would like to get into making some Roms as I do have some programming skills but I have never done anything like this. I downloaded the Development kit but I am not sure how to use It I am used to Windows Visual Studio for Work.
Hey there
Hello everyone, the name's Alexander.
The Glide is my first real android device. I previously used hand-me-downs, most notably an HTC Kaiser. Before that an HTC Wizard. On the Wizard I used custom ROMs from XDA, and on the Kaiser I was able to run Android thanks to the great work of the developers here!
I have a background in communication & multimedia design, and have been a bit of a whiz-kid for as long as I can remember. I don't know anything solid about the nuts and bolts of Android specifically, and consider myself much more a tinkerer and designer rather than any kind of developer. So all I can offer are tips and suggestions on making the user experience better through theming, widgets, and so on. On the technical side I can hold my own, but generally with Android consider what I say as "good guesses" unless otherwise stated!
I can, however, really understand the excitement AND frustration that go along with any development-process. In part due to my own experience, but also second-hand as many of my friends are computer engineers.
I hope to be of some help to the lovely folks here at XDA!
Hi, Salaam, my name is Muzammil, living in Ajman, United Arab Emirates.
Samsung Captivate Glide is my first Android device, also bought the Galaxy S II, but that's mom's phone.
Have pretty much single handedly maintained this phone's Wikipedia article, with photos and text. If anyone wants to make it better, please contribute

Hello, This is Vinay, from Bangalore - India.
Captivate Glide is my first Android Phone and very happy with the device from past 6 months.
I am basically an Mechanical Engineer. I am not into programming and writing codes.
Am ready to try and feedback on the Mods/kernels/Roms that the Developers are ready to offer to the XDA Community.
I can understand the work, time and patience that the ppl put across in any development process. Appreciate the work guys!!
Heavily try different App's widgets available in the market.
I can support in general usage issues and suggestions.
Always happy to learn and share.
Hey guys, Paul from London here.
Had my AT&T branded Captivate Glide for a few weeks now. Really like it lots, although I'm itching for some ICS action, but have so far managed to hold out from rooting and flashing it just yet due to the possible official upgrade
Its my third Android device my last being a Motorola Milestone that I had overclocked and flashed a few ROMs on. Ended up running CM7 in the end which I was pleased with, although the battery life left me wanting.
Backflip anyone?
Harry from NJ here. Upgraded to Cappy Glide from the Motorola Backflip running CM7. The Backflip had a great keyboard but was was slow and old (like me!).
Anyone else had a Backflip?
