Couple quick questions, sorry if any of these are very newbish. I just got my EVO a week ago (first android!!!). I did the simple root, RA recovery, and loaded cm6 nightly onto my phone. Here are my questions:
1) If I want to go back to stock root I just power down, volume down+power, and click on recovery?
2) If I want to load a new ROM do I just download the zip, place it on the SD, and use rom manager?
3) is nandroid the same thing as RA recovery i assume?
4) Since this is my first android, if there is a new OTA update from sprint how do i prevent it from updating my phone?
Thanks for the answers....sorry I am a super newb but I did a lot of research over the past week and decided to pull the trigger and root. These are some things I did not come across. Thanks again.

1. When you click on "Recovery" it boots you into either Clockwork or Amon RA, from which you can clear caches, factory reset, or flash new ROMs/radios/kernels/anything in .zip format. If you want to go back to stock, you need a stock ROM on your SD card (get one that's rooted!) if you don't want to risk losing root. I don't know if this is still an issue, but unless you need it factory-locked again, use a rooted ROM. See here. Stock ROMs, rooted or not, are flashed just like custom ROMs.
2. Yes, or you can do power+volume down and flash it from there. I just feel like that's the "pure" way to do it, but I haven't seen any complaints about going through the RM GUI. Don't forget to wipe all your data and caches!
3. Yes, the analogy I've been given is that it's basically a Ghost image for Android. Use ROM Manager or the recovery console to restore and you should be back as if nothing ever happened.
4. When OTAs are released, you are notified and asked to download them. Even then, I think you have to confirm again to install it. Just don't accept the download (turn off the scheduled check in Settings if you want). If there is an OTA, wait for a dev here to root it and give the all-clear, then download their version and flash it.
Thanks a lot!!!!!
OK i have done a little more looking and I am a little confused on something.
How do you backup your rom? I used my backup pro for contacts and apps and stuff, but I am not understanding how to create a backup rom to fall back on incase something happens.

To do a nandroid backup just boot to the bootloader(holding vol. down button and pressing the power button) it will load up the white screen.
Hit vol. down to highlight "recovery" and press power. This brings up Amon RA recovery. Black screen with green text(I think).
Hit vol. down and highlight I believe it says "nandroid backup/restore" or something along those lines. Then hit the power button to bring it up.
Now, it will have multiple options like nandroid backup, nandroid backup + ext partition, nandroid restore, google propiertory(sp?) backup etc etc.
Hit vol. down and highlight nandroid backup and hit the power button. Then it I believe it asks for a confirmation and have to hit the power button again.
This will take a couple minutes to finish. When done I believe you have the option to reboot do so. Now, you will have a folder on your SD card named Nandroid.
If you don't have the option to reboot...you'll have to hit both the vol. up and vol. down buttons to go back in Amon RA.
Hope that helps.

Or if you happen to have installed Clockwork instead, you'll get that recovery, but the menu is easy enough to understand. You can also do backups using ROM Manager without booting into recovery. Also, you don't have to push both volume buttons at once to navigate Clockwork like you do in Amon RA. They wrote in a "back" option on the menus, which is sensible, I think.
Ok.....well then let me ask this, can I just go into simple root and flash clock right over amon RA?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yes, AFAIK. I do know you can just install ROM Manager (you should do this anyway, it's included in most custom ROMs as well) and it gives an option to flash either one of them. I didn't use SR so I'm not familiar with the functionality of it.
rooted my htc evo 4g with android 2.2 using unrevoked3. Got superuser permissions. All rooted apps work well but I have one main issue. The issue is that when I use the ROM manager to backup current rom the phone cuts off and then goes to the white htc evo screen and stays there. I have to pull the battery and restart my phone so it can work. My understanding is that one must back up current ROM before installing other ROMs. The steps I am taking are as follows: 1. Go into ROM manager 2. Flash clockworkmod recovery 3. backup current rom. This is where my phone gets stuck on the white htc evo page. Someone please help so I can enjoy my phone. Thanks
in rom manager almost at the bottom o the menu there is an option that says flash alternative recovery or something similar and underneath it it says amon ra, flash that recovery it will put amon ra recovery on your phone, after that you reboot into recovery(turn phone off and then turn it on while pressing volume down, once in recovery you go to backup and select all, then back it up and after that you can wipe cache, dalvik, and data(you see those options when you click wipe in recovery mode) then you can go ahead and flash your rom

First of all Welcome! Now, just boot into recovery.Shut phone off>hold down the "Volume -" and press the power button> when in bootloader use the "Volume -" button to navigate to "recovery" and press the power button. You should now be in recovery now read the menus and navigate to where you can back up the rom.
EDIT: what he said ----/\
thanks, but when i followed your instructions it stayed stuck on the htc evo screen

Okay, so you followed his instructions exactly? When you used rom manager to flash alternate (amon ra) recovery, did that complete successfully? If so, when you shut the phone down, and boot to the bootloader, then selected recovery, is that where you hang at the white htc evo 4g screen? It doesn't successfully boot to recovery, just hangs at the splash screen? If I understand you correctly, and that is accurate, then you should try flashing a recovery from the bootloader. Download the PC36IMG I'll attatch. Place it on the main directory of your SD card. (Now would also be a good time to put the ROM of your choice on your sd card as well). Be sure it's named exactly PC36IMG. Shut your phone off. Hold power and volume down button to get to the bootlaoder. Wait a few seconds and it should ask you to update. Select Volume Up. This recovery is Amon Ra V2.3. Once that's done flashing, don't reboot. Select no on reboot, and then choose 'recovery'. Do you successfully boot to recovery? If yes, go to 'wipe' Wipe data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, boot, and system. You can also flash calkulin's format all.zip if you'd like. Once you're done wiping, go back to the main screen of recovery, and select 'flash zip from sd card' and then 'choose zip from sd card'. Then find the ROM that you put on your sd card, choose it, and flash it. Once done, reboot. That *should* work. If that's exactly what you already tried, I apologize, and report back, we'll come up with some other things to try. If you didn't try that, try it step by step.
when i am in recovery the options i see close to what your instructions state is backup/restore. i clicked on that but i dont see a select all. I see nandroid backup, nandroid restore, backup google proprietary system file and restore google prorietary system files. what do i choose. Thanks

huh.. I'm suspecting its your recovery thats bad. Download THIS and place it on the root of you sd card. Boot the phone into the bootloader by powering the phone down, then press the power and the volume down buttons at the same time> Once the phone boots into the bootloader the phone will automatically recognize the zip file. It will ask if you would like to update, select yes and let it do it's thing and you will be good to go.
you then can follow the instruction we posted earlier and hopefully it'll let you get into recovery mode to backup and flash roms.

That was correct! You want to select 'nandroid backup' > That is what you are creating. Once you select that, it will give you a list of what you want to backup. Check all the boxes, and then select 'perform backup'. It should take a few minutes to complete, and you'll see a bunch of ........ Maybe 4-6 lines of them. Once done, you can then do your wipe and flash your ROM, if you'd like
sorry. i didnt see where you used the arrow to follow the instructions. nandroid backup... and then backup google propritary then wipe the first 3 listed under the wipe menu and also flash the attached zip. Then you may flash the rom of your choice.
it stated that backup is complete. Do I need to reboot the phone? As far as wiping the phone, is that something that i can do in the ROM manager app? I ask these "silly" questions because i am fairly new to this. Some of the language is foreign to me.

No you dont need to reboot your phone. No you cannot wipe in rom manger. Do everything in recovery, learn to love recovery. It's your new best friend. Backup, wipe, and flash roms in recovery to save you a headache.
Is your SD card full? I had the same thing happen to me and realized I had no space available. You might try deleting some previous nandroid backups or other large files. If your card isn't full, then the other posters have the right advice.
EDIT: Looks like you got it working before I could submit my post. Hope the rest goes smoothly for you.

As blakeboy said, forget about ROM manager. You are far better off doing everything manually, in recovery. It's far more reliable, and is very easy to use anyways. And as was already posted, use the CalkulinFormat all.zip before you flash a ROM (after you make your backup, of course)
After wiping do i reboot system now or power off the phone so I can flash the zip you provided. These are the only options I have at this time?

no, wipe and then flash the zip then flash your rom then reboot
the reason you wipe then flash is because the zip adds extra wiping to ensure a clean flash of the new rom so to minimize the chance of a problems occurring.

You should be able to go back to the main screen of recovery, and then go to wipe. Do your wipes, and then go back to 'flash zip from sd card' And then choose your rom and flash it. Once it's done flashing, then reboot.
how do i flash the zip file to my sd card if my phone is not showing up on my computer?
To make a long story short -- I keep downloading the CM7 ROM using ROM Manager and everything is okay up until the point where I start to download new apps (I usually manage to successfully download Titanium and restore my old apps), where it then shoots me a pop-up that says something along the lines of "android.media had to stop" and I can either force close it or report. This message also pops up when I try to access the sound menu through settings.
Right now I'm restored back to the Sense UI (stock), and have thus rendered CM7 unusable until I figure out what exactly is going on.
Does anyone have any idea of how I can fix this?
Try downloading CM 7.0.2's zip file, and flash it in recovery instead of having ROM Manager install it. Make sure you do: wipe user/factory data reset, dalvik cache before flashing the zip.

I don't mean to be a pest, but would you mind providing some specific steps for doing that?
As I've mentioned in other posts, I'm fairly new to a lot of this material, and don't want to completely mess up my phone.
Boot into hboot by powering off device, and then press and hold the power button and volume down button st the same time. Scroll down using the volume rocker to recovery and wait for CWM to load. Use the optical device to select clear cache, and after that go back to the main menu and choose advanced and then clear dalvik cache. After this go to the main menu and choose install zip from SDcard. Scroll down to the desired Rom, select it and press yes. After it is done installing go to the main menu and press reboot. After this your phone should have the custom ROM on it.
Note: Make sure the zip is on the root of the sdcard.. like /sdcard/ROM.zip
Hope this helped,

Sure, no problems! You'll need to get the zip of CM7 from here.
Then I helped someone do this exact thing, so check it out here, specifically posts #6 and #8. Save the zip file to your SD card, and put it in a place where you know it is at. This would preferably be the root of it, but if you recreate a folder remember that folder's name.
If you're restoring system or app data in titanium backup that's probably the issue. Only restore apps, if that. Best to start out fresh if going from sense>aosp.

First off, thanks for the awesome post. That's just what I need.
Also, I read in the topic you linked to that you use Titanium Backup to back up your apps after you flash the ROM, but you mentioned not to backup the data because that can cause issues. When I had previously attempted to flash a ROM, I had been restoring apps AND data -- do you think that may have been what was causing my problem?

I wish I had seen your post before making my previous post. I had been restoring my data, as well. So I'm going to flash it via ROM Manager and restore just my apps to see if that is what was causing the issue.
Sounds good, I would recommend doing a complete wipe like the other poster said and then restore only apps after installing the rom, should work better for you. Let us know and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Actually, another quick question:
How do I restore just apps using Titanium? I only see options for apps and data, or only new apps, but nothing about just all apps.
Also, ROM Manager asks me if I'd like to wipe my phone before installing the ROM...is that enough?
Ah you're right, I haven't used titanium in a while but it does say apps and data in the batch menu. I would install the rom, do a backup, then restore the apps (no system data). If you run into issues then restore your backup.
I don't use rom manager, I prefer to do those things manually and it seems like some people have issues when using rom manager as opposed to downloading and installing manually. Here's what I'd do:
Download rom and move to SD card
Boot into recovery (if you're not on a custom rom you can do this by turning phone off and turning back on by holding power and volume down, then select recovery from the menu)
Select backup and restore, then select backup
Now, select wipe data/factory reset, then select wipe cache, then select advanced>wipe dalvik cache. In recovery, you move around using the optical joystick and select by clicking it
After doing those wipes, select install zip from SD, select the rom on your SD card and let install then reboot
Now that you're on cm7, you can reboot into recovery by pressing power, selecting reboot, then recovery.
I would do another backup then try restoring with titanium.

Since I cant post in the development thread ill post here. Dunno if its right.
I just wanna know if all data, settings etc is lost when you update from kernel v4 to kernel v5 (and versions after that)?
Cause then Im gonna change back to stock kernel so I dont have to reinstall everything everytime a new version is out.
I hate remaking the homepages and download apps again :/
Excuse my english.
its not gonna lost..
and for your apps u can use titanium back up pro for back up, so u dont have to download all apps again..
Flashing Kernel will not deleted user data since your changing the system information. If you already have v4 Kernel go to Recovery and make a backup there.

Care to explain? =)
And is there an option to backup all apps you got installed in titanium? or do i have to click every single one and backup one by one?
When you turn on your phone press the back button several times. You'll be in recovery mode there you'll find the backup option. Use the volume key to navigate and use the power button the select.

Edit: I got the donate version
I just rooted my International HTX One X, and applied CWM. I am still running the stock ROM, and the only way I can access recovery is to power on + vol down. Is there an app like 4EXT that will allow me to boot right into recovery and perform backups with a simple date+rom name as the title? Or do I first flash a ROM to get that ability? As of now, I've done a backup, however I am wondering if I do another, will it overwrite the first one?
There are many apps on the Play Store which allow you to reboot to recovery.
All backups are saved individually and are not overwritten.
