[Q] Having trouble running CM7. - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

To make a long story short -- I keep downloading the CM7 ROM using ROM Manager and everything is okay up until the point where I start to download new apps (I usually manage to successfully download Titanium and restore my old apps), where it then shoots me a pop-up that says something along the lines of "android.media had to stop" and I can either force close it or report. This message also pops up when I try to access the sound menu through settings.
Right now I'm restored back to the Sense UI (stock), and have thus rendered CM7 unusable until I figure out what exactly is going on.
Does anyone have any idea of how I can fix this?

Try downloading CM 7.0.2's zip file, and flash it in recovery instead of having ROM Manager install it. Make sure you do: wipe user/factory data reset, dalvik cache before flashing the zip.

I don't mean to be a pest, but would you mind providing some specific steps for doing that?
As I've mentioned in other posts, I'm fairly new to a lot of this material, and don't want to completely mess up my phone.

Boot into hboot by powering off device, and then press and hold the power button and volume down button st the same time. Scroll down using the volume rocker to recovery and wait for CWM to load. Use the optical device to select clear cache, and after that go back to the main menu and choose advanced and then clear dalvik cache. After this go to the main menu and choose install zip from SDcard. Scroll down to the desired Rom, select it and press yes. After it is done installing go to the main menu and press reboot. After this your phone should have the custom ROM on it.
Note: Make sure the zip is on the root of the sdcard.. like /sdcard/ROM.zip
Hope this helped,

Sure, no problems! You'll need to get the zip of CM7 from here.
Then I helped someone do this exact thing, so check it out here, specifically posts #6 and #8. Save the zip file to your SD card, and put it in a place where you know it is at. This would preferably be the root of it, but if you recreate a folder remember that folder's name.

If you're restoring system or app data in titanium backup that's probably the issue. Only restore apps, if that. Best to start out fresh if going from sense>aosp.

First off, thanks for the awesome post. That's just what I need.
Also, I read in the topic you linked to that you use Titanium Backup to back up your apps after you flash the ROM, but you mentioned not to backup the data because that can cause issues. When I had previously attempted to flash a ROM, I had been restoring apps AND data -- do you think that may have been what was causing my problem?

I wish I had seen your post before making my previous post. I had been restoring my data, as well. So I'm going to flash it via ROM Manager and restore just my apps to see if that is what was causing the issue.

Sounds good, I would recommend doing a complete wipe like the other poster said and then restore only apps after installing the rom, should work better for you. Let us know and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Actually, another quick question:
How do I restore just apps using Titanium? I only see options for apps and data, or only new apps, but nothing about just all apps.
Also, ROM Manager asks me if I'd like to wipe my phone before installing the ROM...is that enough?

Ah you're right, I haven't used titanium in a while but it does say apps and data in the batch menu. I would install the rom, do a backup, then restore the apps (no system data). If you run into issues then restore your backup.
I don't use rom manager, I prefer to do those things manually and it seems like some people have issues when using rom manager as opposed to downloading and installing manually. Here's what I'd do:
Download rom and move to SD card
Boot into recovery (if you're not on a custom rom you can do this by turning phone off and turning back on by holding power and volume down, then select recovery from the menu)
Select backup and restore, then select backup
Now, select wipe data/factory reset, then select wipe cache, then select advanced>wipe dalvik cache. In recovery, you move around using the optical joystick and select by clicking it
After doing those wipes, select install zip from SD, select the rom on your SD card and let install then reboot
Now that you're on cm7, you can reboot into recovery by pressing power, selecting reboot, then recovery.
I would do another backup then try restoring with titanium.

How to flash Syndicate Frozen

I am currently on EC05 using the prerooted CWM 2.5.
I want to get the syndicate rom on my phone. I know I need CWM 3.0. How do I get CWM 3.0 on my phone?
What steps do I need to take to get CWM 3.0 and the newest EC05 based Syndicate ROM flashed?
Sorry I'm a newbie and have never done any of this to my phone. I know how to use ODIN but have never used CWM.
Thanks for your time.
1.Put the Rom on your SD Card
2.Follow this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
3.Boot into recovery it will be backing up and restoring
then just wipe x3 and Flash the rom BEFORE YOU BOOT UP.
DO NOT BOOT UP W/O FLASHING AN EXT4 Rom or Kernel
Okay thanks for that thread. However I have never used CWM before. I understand placing the ROM on my SD card.
I see that it references EB13, since I'm on EC05 does it make a difference?
1) So I'll download the one-click root zip file. (Even though I'm already rooted does it matter?)
2) I click run.bat and wait for it to finish, then I do the "Three button method" to get into CWM 3. What is the three button method? (Is it the volume up + camera + power button?) It says to wait for everything to happen then do the three button method then wait again? How will I know when I can do the three button method? I assume the run.bat finishes then I do the three button method and CWM does something?
It says to NOT reboot. How do I then flash Syndicate? The thread references flashing an EB13 kernel? Do I simply just replace the EB13 kernel listed with the Syndicate zipped rom? What steps in CWM do I actually do to flash the ROM?
Sorry for the seemingly stupid questions. Just want to make sure I understand what I"m doing before I dive in.
No just put the rom on your SD Card
since you are on EC05 you don't need to bother with switching builds
you just need cwm3 to flash it
so put it on your sd card and run the one click cwm3
then when you boot into recovery
USE THE VOLUME ROCKER TO MOVE UP/DOWN
AND THE CAMERA BUTTON TO SELECT....
Select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset"
do that 3 times...
Then select " Wipe Cache Partition"
do that three times....
Then go into "Advanced" and select "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
do that three times....
Then go to "Install zip from sdcard"
and select the ACS ROM....
After its done select "Reboot phone now"
then enjoy...
Yes after the one click has finished
1. POWER OFF YOUR PHONE
2. HOLD DOWN THE CAMERA+POWER+VOLUME DOWN
when it loads into recovery do this....
USE THE VOLUME ROCKER TO MOVE UP/DOWN
AND THE CAMERA BUTTON TO SELECT....
Select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset"
do that 3 times...
Then select " Wipe Cache Partition"
do that three times....
Then go into "Advanced" and select "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
do that three times....
Then go to "Install zip from sdcard"
and select the ACS ROM....
After its done select "Reboot phone now"
Wonderful thanks for the help.
Any thoughts on whether I should choose the journaling or non-journaling ROM?
Also what about backing up my apps and data? I have titanium backup but have never used it before. I know CWM backs up data as well. When I flash the new ROM is there any settings I need to be aware of to make sure my data is intact? Or is a full wipe my only option?
Instead of starting a new thread could I get nice directions like this?
I am on EB13 using Bonsai 3.0.1. I have clockworks 3.0.6 instead already

No PIT (Makes it simpler)
check Auto Reboot ONLY
then connect your phone in download mode and run it.
Okay just got home to try this and am having an issue.
I followed the steps and I got to the part where syndicate is installing, the phone rebooted on it's own then was caught in a boot loop. I had to pull the battery to get it to stop. I was able to get CWM 3.0 started so I know I'm not bricked. What should I try next?
Okay never mind, I believe all issues have been solved.
I went back into clockwork and installed the ROM again and it worked this time.
Thanks for your help!!

Did you try reflashing the rom??
Also u are using the orange colored clockwork mod right?
Okay I do have a question after all.
I don't have any contacts or any of my apps. I know clockwork did a backup, how do I import them?
I also did a titanium backup but I have no idea if I did that right or where it is stored.

what rom did u come from?
Also to restore data from clockwork goto: Backup/restore/advanced restore and restore data only.
i do think the rom automatically backs up and restores for you unless you came from a non syndicate rom or a old version of syndicate.
For titanium back up: go into the root of your sd card and see if there is a folder called titatanium back up and see if it backed up, if so just in titatanium back up click menu/batch restore all apps and system data
I came from rooted stock EC05.
I will try the titanium thing first and if that doesn't work I'll post back.
Edit:
I do have a folder called titanium backup with everything in it hopefully. I will redownload the app from the market and attempt to backup.

[Q] evo stuck on white screen when trying to backup current ROM to install new ROMS

rooted my htc evo 4g with android 2.2 using unrevoked3. Got superuser permissions. All rooted apps work well but I have one main issue. The issue is that when I use the ROM manager to backup current rom the phone cuts off and then goes to the white htc evo screen and stays there. I have to pull the battery and restart my phone so it can work. My understanding is that one must back up current ROM before installing other ROMs. The steps I am taking are as follows: 1. Go into ROM manager 2. Flash clockworkmod recovery 3. backup current rom. This is where my phone gets stuck on the white htc evo page. Someone please help so I can enjoy my phone. Thanks
in rom manager almost at the bottom o the menu there is an option that says flash alternative recovery or something similar and underneath it it says amon ra, flash that recovery it will put amon ra recovery on your phone, after that you reboot into recovery(turn phone off and then turn it on while pressing volume down, once in recovery you go to backup and select all, then back it up and after that you can wipe cache, dalvik, and data(you see those options when you click wipe in recovery mode) then you can go ahead and flash your rom

First of all Welcome! Now, just boot into recovery.Shut phone off>hold down the "Volume -" and press the power button> when in bootloader use the "Volume -" button to navigate to "recovery" and press the power button. You should now be in recovery now read the menus and navigate to where you can back up the rom.

Okay, so you followed his instructions exactly? When you used rom manager to flash alternate (amon ra) recovery, did that complete successfully? If so, when you shut the phone down, and boot to the bootloader, then selected recovery, is that where you hang at the white htc evo 4g screen? It doesn't successfully boot to recovery, just hangs at the splash screen? If I understand you correctly, and that is accurate, then you should try flashing a recovery from the bootloader. Download the PC36IMG I'll attatch. Place it on the main directory of your SD card. (Now would also be a good time to put the ROM of your choice on your sd card as well). Be sure it's named exactly PC36IMG. Shut your phone off. Hold power and volume down button to get to the bootlaoder. Wait a few seconds and it should ask you to update. Select Volume Up. This recovery is Amon Ra V2.3. Once that's done flashing, don't reboot. Select no on reboot, and then choose 'recovery'. Do you successfully boot to recovery? If yes, go to 'wipe' Wipe data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, boot, and system. You can also flash calkulin's format all.zip if you'd like. Once you're done wiping, go back to the main screen of recovery, and select 'flash zip from sd card' and then 'choose zip from sd card'. Then find the ROM that you put on your sd card, choose it, and flash it. Once done, reboot. That *should* work. If that's exactly what you already tried, I apologize, and report back, we'll come up with some other things to try. If you didn't try that, try it step by step.
when i am in recovery the options i see close to what your instructions state is backup/restore. i clicked on that but i dont see a select all. I see nandroid backup, nandroid restore, backup google proprietary system file and restore google prorietary system files. what do i choose. Thanks

huh.. I'm suspecting its your recovery thats bad. Download THIS and place it on the root of you sd card. Boot the phone into the bootloader by powering the phone down, then press the power and the volume down buttons at the same time> Once the phone boots into the bootloader the phone will automatically recognize the zip file. It will ask if you would like to update, select yes and let it do it's thing and you will be good to go.
you then can follow the instruction we posted earlier and hopefully it'll let you get into recovery mode to backup and flash roms.

nandroid backup... and then backup google propritary then wipe the first 3 listed under the wipe menu and also flash the attached zip. Then you may flash the rom of your choice.
it stated that backup is complete. Do I need to reboot the phone? As far as wiping the phone, is that something that i can do in the ROM manager app? I ask these "silly" questions because i am fairly new to this. Some of the language is foreign to me.

No you dont need to reboot your phone. No you cannot wipe in rom manger. Do everything in recovery, learn to love recovery. It's your new best friend. Backup, wipe, and flash roms in recovery to save you a headache.
Is your SD card full? I had the same thing happen to me and realized I had no space available. You might try deleting some previous nandroid backups or other large files. If your card isn't full, then the other posters have the right advice.

As blakeboy said, forget about ROM manager. You are far better off doing everything manually, in recovery. It's far more reliable, and is very easy to use anyways. And as was already posted, use the CalkulinFormat all.zip before you flash a ROM (after you make your backup, of course)
After wiping do i reboot system now or power off the phone so I can flash the zip you provided. These are the only options I have at this time?

no, wipe and then flash the zip then flash your rom then reboot
the reason you wipe then flash is because the zip adds extra wiping to ensure a clean flash of the new rom so to minimize the chance of a problems occurring.

[Q] Question|root and new ROM and apps

If I root my desire and flash a custom ROM will all the apps I have installed now
would be gone?
And if I bought an app, will I have to buy it again after rooting and a new ROM?
thanks
oh and im sorry if this is in the wrong section
For the first question, I think all your apps will be deleted just if you want. In doc kitchen, are two versions of rom, with wipe and no wipe, but the recomanded version is that which will wipe all your data. You can backup all your apps before that.
Sent from my Galaxy S using Tapatalk
You can just back up all the apps via Titanium backup from the market. It will also backup your user data.
So you should go:
1) root & install custom recovery (usually part of rooting process)
2) install Ti Backup and run a batch backup of all user apps and data
3) make sure all your contacts are google contacts! Then they will just be re-imported when you register your google account on your new rom
4) pick your rom and download its zip file - copy this to the root of your sd card.
5) boot into recovery and factory reset i.e. wipe everything
6) still in recovery, select "install from zip" and pick the zip file above
7) reboot and wait (can be slow the first time), then run a batch restore from Ti backup and you are done!
Thank you very much its very helpful.

Yep they will all be backed up.
I forgot a step too - you should always do a nandroid backup (this is done in recovery) before wiping and flashing rom in case something screws up.
This way you can restore what you previously had through recovery.

When you paid an app on the Market, the info is attached to your Google account. So when you configure a new rom with your Google account, you see in the Market those apps are paid and you can download them again for free.

[Q] Best way to backup and restore everything?

Like the title says I'd like to know the best way to backup and restore everything. Specifically when flashing a new ROM (either a newer version or a completely different ROM). I would like to be able to restore everything from apps (and any data they've stored), contacts, txts, emails, etc. Is there an app I should use? Or should I use the backup feature in TWRP? Or make a Nandroid backup using Rom Toolbox?
The backup feature on twrp or whatever recovery you are using. Full scale backups take a lot of time and memory though. I do one every once in awhile. I wouldn't recommend it every single time.

Restoring system can cause harm to most roms afterwards.
When flashing a complete new rom eg:
-Was on Sprint leaked rom, backed up through TB (Titanium Backup)
-Went to recovery mode.
-Chose backup>chose to name the file (JB11-1)
-Went to wipe>wiped data>wiped system>wiped cache... repeated 2 times (supersticious)
-Chose Install, (in this case CM10 11-1) chose rom>chose Gapps (different if you are installing an OTA based rom) finished I boot up
-Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to let it build cache and run scripts or what ever else they

-Install TB restore apps only

I've read that about restoring system can cause problems. What data exactly is stored there?
\system contains everything that comes pre-installed and anything altered, code for xmls, libs, bin files, all the apps that like system settings to Google framework stuff. So if something durastic was changed from one rom to another then you restoring that can cause issues. That's my understanding at least. lol
Alright, thanks for the info.

I usually don't restore any data if I jump to JB from ics or vice versa

[Q]TOO Many Files, If i delete all the files will my backups still work?

First of all I searched on the subject and i have not been able to find a similar question with an answer (maybe its a really dumb question)
Basically my phone is FULL of unused files, so much so on my 16Gb I have only 1.5Gb free. I have no media (Music, Video E books Etc They are all on my SD card) This is also with virtually no apps loaded after a rom install.
IDK what i can do to fix this. Also Will Root Be Removed if I tried to Factory Reset it Rooting isnt difficult but I wouldnt want to do it so often because of the hassle and it must be
I have been flashing a lot of roms and testing apps and i have a lot of bloat IDK how to remove safely as IDK if I delete these files will my backups still work?? IDK how the backup works but they are certainly not large enough to be a "IMAGE"
In all what do I do to clean up my phone and how to keep it clean. I like to think i am not learning impaired but IDK. In all I just want to remove the bloat and not ruin my system. I tried an app called SD Maid and although it found files it did not free up the gigs of space i should have.
PLEASE HELP
I think either twrp or cwm has an option to wipe internal sdcard.
Just make sure you have backed up anything important first.
Factory reset will only wipe internal sd if you have stock recovery installed and no, you shouldn't lose root by factory reset. You will lose all data and user installed apps.
If you've been flashing a lot of roms and stuff, I would suggest doing a full wipe from recovery and then reflash the rom you want. Basically start from scratch, and restore only the data you need from your backups.

After some research i have seen that that would be the only way to do what I want. Flashing a lot of roms and testing apps really bloats your Nand.
So after i do this my backups will no longer work?
Will it remove the rom from my internal SD that i plan on using to basically "Start Over' ?
After this procedure will the phone boot without installing a rom?
In all I have CWM and it has the option you speak of. Just before I do it i just wanted to know a little more.
What i should do is boot into recovery mode then use the system wipe option, then flash desired rom, (is normal rom install procedures still needed wipe of cache and dalvik ETC? or will this do a full wipe)
If anyone can Answer my above questions and maybe give a short how to (i know most of the basics but this is my first time doing a full system wipe)
I greatly appreciate any response and thank you for reading my post.
Why wouldn't your backups work?
If you wipe system, no the phone won't boot.
Have your rom on External sd. If you choise format data, or wipe internal storage it will do just what it says and you won't have the rom to flash.
Factory reset formats the entire data partition, except for internal sd if your using cwm. You have to choose format data or specifically wipe internal sd.
System wipe shouldn't be necessary. When you flash a new rom its should format system as part of the process.

Thanks for all your help doc (BTW I like the name)
OK, I have decided I want/need to wipe my internal SD its just too bloated with leftover stuff from apps and IDK what else (IDK if Roms leave anything else I have flashes about 10 already. I have decided on what I want as my daily driver (for now) probably AOKP then I'll cherry pick more mods maybe cm10 IDK exactly so if anyone reads this this is what I am going to do please post if I am going to somehow soft brick my phone.
I have CWMR (I am kinda annoyed with the small issues with the build I have 6.0.1.2 and am thinking about switching to TWRP although I am still green and don't want to mess up my recovery and brick my phone) anyway back on topic
I have nothing I wish to save except my contacts an calender which Google takes care of so I wont be backing anything up I'm not really concerned with app settings I can take care of that easily later.
First, I plan on doing a full internal SD system wipe
Next, I plan on flashing a ROM from my SD card (just in case should I remove my SD card when I do this then insert it when I wish to flash the ROM)
Then I suppose I will then enjoy
Install goo manager from the market and in app, press menu then install openRecovery script. Wait till a toast CONFIRMS install and you now have TWRP.
Id still make a nandroid backup just in case. Its always good to have the extra option when wiping everything. You can delete and make a fresh one after your new rom is flashed.
Just keep your rom on the external sd and you should be fine. Remember to wipe internal sd from cwm or twrp you have to choose wipe internal storage or format data.
Shouldn't need to remove the sdcard. External won't be touched unless you specifically tell it to.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the help I Read TWRP has the same backup date issue and I don't NEED touch recovery So right now i will stick with CWM and may later change but for now it works and so far i see no reason to change. Unless I find something to convince me TWRP works better than CWM.
So Today or tonight I will wipe, and probably install AOKP with Faux Kernel (i am using Faux right now and it works VERY Well) and probably some audio mods. I will report my hopeful Success later Ill also post what i did step by step for future reference in searching so others like me will not need to post such a post.
