I have been with my precious HTC Desire for 6 months now & i love it!
i can't imagine something else..but tomorrow i'll have to chance to upgrade to another phone..i have been leaning towards the desire hd..but it'll be available till this friday which is soon..or should i just go get the Galaxy s tomorrow?
I know people may have asked this before but i just can't seem to choose
The Galaxy S is barely an update over the Desire if it even is one.
Take the Desire HD... they go for much more than a Galaxy S on eBay!!
Desire HD 40 million triangles per second vs Galaxy S 90 million. Get about 20fps more in opengl2.0 benchmarks. SAMOLED blows all other screens out of the water right now including the Retina. I LOVE HTC but actually do some research before coming on XDA giving opinions about things "barely being an upgrade" when they are faster than the device referenced.

1) Samsung phones always shine on specifications, and disappoint on the software side.
2) Amoled on my Desire doesn't make me drool over ANY other display, including the Retina and SAMOLED. It's more than good...
3) I would also NOT call a switch to Galaxy S an upgrade, sorry Reefermattness...
My opinion: if you like your Desire, stick to it. Get a newer/better phone once you are dissatisfied with yours...
I'd also go for the Desire Hd, the Sammy has great specs but it doen't seem it's quite delivering the experience. The Desire HD seems to be working great and the new Sense is awsome (i think Sammy's UI is really ugly!!!).
Plus, when gingerberad comes around you'll have alot more chances to get it on the Desire HD (though maybe neither will get it!!)
If you like your Desire, there's no question!
Uhm, why doesn't anyone that compares Desire vs Galaxy S take into account the design and build quality of both? HTC is light years ahead, it's more compact and solid, Samsungs are always plasticy and bulky. A *HUGE* disadvantage is also the lack of optical pad on the Galaxy. Come on, why do all newer phones ditch the dpad?? It's super useful, especially when writing text and jumping across links on a web page.

And whats your point?
Desire has better ram, build materials, developer support, and Sense is actually useful. Samsung imo has only the benefit of using the screen in the sun & thats it.
Any way OP, go for the HD or Z, they are both great but slightly different than our beloved Desire.
Easy.
You Choose.
Try and get your hands on both for a few minutes. Honestly, there is no better decision then your own. Everybody has their own opinion, but only you can choose what is right for you.
Makes the whole Debate worthless IMHO
KYI
I currently have both the Desire (newly repaired) and a Samsung Galaxy S; in fact they are just sitting on the desk over there <------- see?
I have to say that it really is six and two threes, I really can't spilt them, which is something I need to do as one needs to head off on Ebay. Anyway I would say that if you are happy with the Desire then keep it and go for something completely different. Maybe even wait to see what happens with the new Nexus.
The Galaxy definitely is not enough of an upgrade over the Desire to satisfy you for a good few months. In fact I would say that my Desire is a fraction quicker on a daily basis, such as loading apps and menu transitions, even with the Galaxy lag fixed and running FroYo. We are talking fractions of a second but it is noticeable.
The screen size, colour resolution and battery is better on the SGS but the Desire is a fraction quicker and the UI is more polished. I can't say that I have come across a benefit of the multi touch and GPU over the Desire yet, but I'm in the lucky position of not needing to keep a phone long enough to worry about it.
I now just need to decide which one fits me best.
If I was you, I would wait to see what the Samsung Nexus S has to offer (when officially announced).
You never know, it might be great?
Stu
Ok thankyou guys!
I will have a good think about & see which one i'll get!
If not i'll be more then happy with my current desire!
just wait. do not get the dhd yet. wait for an announcement of the nexus s,
with google opting for samsung this year for the nexus, i expect the trend to shift too. i mean, u would definetely see REAL development in the galaxy section once the device comes out.
The only things im gona dat is the screen of the htc désiré gd is ugly the dozen is great but if your used amoled then you will beshocked at the hd atleast i was

Those are the responses I would expect from xda, which is obviously a HTC fan based web page. I have not seen my friends desire z do anything better than the galaxy s so far. Even he wishes he got a galaxy s after side by side comparison. Sense ui does nothing but slow phones down and looks flashy. Most real developers don't even mess with sense ui, and leave it out of their roms for just that reason. Besides... you complain about Samsung software, I would assume since you guys have been at xda for a while you know its possible to CHANGE THE SOFTWARE! To each their own but I've done the side by side tests live and the desire line performs half as well as the galaxy s.

Where as we know that Samsung are spot on with their software and support?? Not.
We could talk about the support for their previous top of the range effort the i8910 or more the lack of, the broken pre-release promises and the huge let down the owners felt (I was one of those). We could also mention the lag on the SGS due to the proprietary RFS file system.
Am I a fan of HTC? Well lets put it this way, I have owned 3 recent Samsungs and one HTC, the Desire. I also own the SGS alongside the Desire and as I said, I would find it difficult to choose between the two. Is the SGS a huge step up? No, but I would say the same to someone claiming the same about the Desire.
They are both nice handsets and do what they do well but there is no real clear winner. Good for you that you like your Galaxy but it in reality, in the real world of usage over statistics, it does not trounce the Desire and that's the truth.

Ok so I got a legend, freakin cool phone. Had the opportunity to upgrade to desire for free so of course I took it. Now don't get me wrong, of course the desire is a 'better' phone, but I cannot help but notice that build is soooo much better on the legend. Now most of you will say of course, it is aluminum, but it's not just that.
1) Probably the most annoying, the screen on the legend destroys the desire. It shouldn't on paper, but believe me it does. The pentile matrix vs no pentile matrix is abundantly clear.
2) I am terrified of dust getting under the screen because i can see the gap between the screen and phone and am constantly making sure I clear dust from it. On the legend the screen is sealed to the side of the phone.
3) Well obviously the materials aren't as nice, but I knew that would be the case in making the change so that one does not really count.
That being said, the desire is a powerful beast and I am looking forward to Froyo.
These might be interesting points to someone tossing up between the two phones. The legend was also blazingly quick, and unless you want to play the latest 3d games, it is probably fast enough for you. Still not sure if I did the right thing upgrading!
yeah i know what you mean about the pentile thing, i'm not surprised the legend screen looks better tbh
and i find the gap between the screen and body annoying as well, but theres nothing you can do lol
yea unfortunately i did not know about the pentile thing prior to changing. i am sure i would not have really noticed it i i didn't have the legend first, but dayom! the screen on the legend was crisp!
Yes I agree, legends actually a very good phone except one and only one problem which is the CPU...... it pushes legend to an edge that everyone turn to desire.
But hero and legend has actually a much better size and style which I love them so much.
Although I am using desire, lol.

HTC were so close to making literally the be all and end all of kick ass smart phones, desire components in legend body. Damn that would been sweet
Am I the only one mystified that each new HTC phone seems to be disconnected from the past models? In other words, why not the Legend II?
Not with android family at least.
You can see the touch series that htc made for windows mobile. Well, initially, only some touch models and now all their wm devices are under the name Touch.
Hopefully, there is something like that to happen to their android product line.
And I'm really looking for the gsm versions of evo 4g and incredible. N1/desire power, legend design quality without mis-register multitouch issue on popular gsm network. I don't live in the US btw.

argh! i need to figure out in the next 2 days whether i want to change back to legend. if i am not going to be playing crazy games or using google earth, do you think the desire is overkill? the main thing i would be worried about with the legend is that it will lack the support of the desire as it is not a flagship model

I have the Desire and i loved it... Never got the chance to test Legend since i compared the two and have gone to the powerfull one, but...
I really dislike the physical buttons on the Desire. It bothers me that a touch device have so many physical buttons (they can be physical, but more integrated to the design like the Legend).
Also the speaker is very poor when making calls on speakerphone (but i think this is HTC regular) and the battery cover lacks some quality...
My eyes are really stuck on Legend - it is simply fabulous! Really really beautiful and made of aluminum, but i also heard that it makes wireless power go down a bit when compared to other non aluminum.
I've bought the Desire instead of the Legend mainly because of the power vs price and the wireless thing...
My advice is that you go for the one you like the most, since they are mainly the same, but the Legend is so dawn cool and beautiful and the Desire is a powerful beast! Which serves you best?
All right, have decided to keep the desire. Although this is probably more down to laziness than an actual well thought out decision. But if I decide I really want the legend then I can always sell the desire. Might do that if legend actually gets 2.2

You won't regret it
One day you'll need that Snapdragon CPU, and rumors are FroYo may enable 720p video recording
Ok little bit of an update, just managed to get my desire side by side with my friends legend.
The colors on the legend look so washed out next to the desire! Doesn't even seem AOMED. In my memory legend screen was so much better but next to desire it did not compare.
Also legend felt pretty slow after using the desire for 2 weeks.
So in my opinion, the legend only wins out on form factor now. Glad I kept my desire, enjoying all the custom roms that are coming out!
Hi Guys,
Don't know if I should be posting this here but I'm at a loss, I have in my possession the HTC Desire and the Samsung i9000 both brand new, and I want to keep one and sell the other.
PROBLEM IS I have no clue which to keep and which to sell. Both have their pro's and con's yet I need to make a decisions and...FAST lol as I need the money!
What do you guys reckon? Any help would be needed!
Thanks!
Rolphez
I probably go for the desire as I dont like the iphone lookalike of the samsung galaxy.
And if you need the money you'll probably get more for the samsung as its just released in Australia.
The GPS on the Desire is amazing... where as on the Galaxy S, all I've heard is reports of how bad and useless it is... that made my mind up when I almost bought one
Thanks for the input I'm leaning more towards the desire at the moment yet the screen and sound on the samsung are heaps better
What I mainly don't like about the samsung is the unneeded samsung crap they include in their rom.
The Htc sense is brilliant but I must admit the touch responsiveness is far better on the samsung.
Hard choice!

You can always root the samsung and remove the crap
Or just use a different launcher...
In videos I saw, Samsung Galaxy's CPU was performing noticeabley better, especially in 3D apps.
The Samsung should have aproximately 3x the 3D performance that the N1 and the Desire has.
Due to the 3D chip they're using.
hard choice indeed, i imagine the galaxy camera is also better, maybe if you remove all the bloatware from the galaxy it will be more responsive
it's also better outdoors?
i think galaxy, but it all depends on your needs, init!
btw i luvs me desire
well, galaxy s got super amoled and better gpu...everything else is same or better on desire. lame UI on samsung and i rly dont believe in samsung updates, after seeing what happened to i7500... imho desire
I have almost the same predicament.
I currently have a HD2 and I was so dissapointed that software wise, it was at the end of it's life. I thought that was a stupid faux-pas on the part of HTC and feel incredibly let down, as a lot of HD2 owners do. It looks like Android isn't ever going to be a viable option on it, and if it were, it would probably be a half-working shell.
So, thanks to O2 Ireland changing pricing in my contract, I was able to get out of my 18 month contract by 16 months on it so I bought a desire. The first thing I noticed, was that sense was nowhere near as polished as on the HD2, but I can live with that.
To cut a long stgory short, the network I was sold the phone on was utterly useless for data (Meteor) so i cancelled that contract, and tried to get the desire on voda. There were none in the shop, but the salesman in carephone warehouse in Ennis, kindly offered to sell me a samsung s i9000 on the proviso, that if if didn't like it, I could take it back and get a desire (as long as I made or received no calls/texts) so I stuck a disabled voda sim in and use it via wifi.
I instantly hated the Galaxy s because of 2 things. The blatent Iphone look, and the cheap plastic build quality of it. I can see that chrome outer edge looking worn in no time at all. Build wise, this is the worst phone i've come across. The battery cover is so thin and flimsy, and it's polished plastic so just inviting scratches and finger marks.
Anyway, 1st impressions aside, The User interface was just awful, But I have to say, that now i've installed launcherpro, and fancy widget I am really enjoying the phone.
I have a few days to choose which one to finally end up with (the Desire, or the Galaxy) and at this point I am torn.
I think what worries me most with the Galaxy, is updates. There will be an update to android 2.2 sometime in the far future, but I've heard others say thats the end of the official road. That in itself doesn't bother me, as long as newer versions of droid can be put on it. I think thats where most peoples concerns with this phone are. The desire has a company behind it with a better (but not always in the case of the HD2 and a few others) track record of updates, and there is a much larger community of cooks and enthusiasts for the desire.
The info out there at the moment on the Galaxy is sketchy. I've read people talking about how any cooked rom is only made from an official rom. Does that mean that when droid 3 comes out, that this phone is left behind? Does the same stand for the Desire?
Sorry for the long post.
Dave
PS. I just remembered my other MAJOR grievance with the Galaxy s. You have to use Samsungs proprietary software to access the phone via your computer. On the Desire, I just plugged it in, and could instantly see the sdcard. Not tried it with linux, but I suspect the galaxy won't be seen. Think I just made my mind up... Or maybe not.. Aargh
Thank you all for the replies, and I don't mind the long replies Dave, it's always best to hear such experiences as it helps me make a decision.
Here are my Pro's and Con's of both devices:
Starting with the Cosmetics:
1. The Build Quality of the Desire is by Far better than the I9000 - the i9000 feels like a toy rather than a phone.
2. The Desire looks much better than the Samsung i9000 - The whole reason I moved to Android is to forget the much hated (hatred is a personal opinion) iPhone look I don't want to be reminded by it again!
3. The Samsung i9000 is lighter than the Desire and although I actually didn't mind the lighter weight, my hand preferred to feel something solid rather than a piece of plastic. (I have to admit the HTC legend is my preferred phone as far as solid design is concerned!)
4. Samsung has a bigger screen than the Desire, and it's definitely brighter or cripier with it's Super AMOLED but pixel count is the same, and the 3.7" is more than enough in the Desire.
Moving on to other stuff...
5. I played some nice 3D games on the Samsung and I must admit for those who are into gaming, it's brilliant, I don't really care about such games i'm more into word games and stuff which the Desire manages to perform just fine in running them.
6. Using Swype input on the Samsung is much better than the desire, although I did manage to install Swype on the Desire and it works fine, but Samsung is more responsive it was just a pleasure to type on it.
7. Samsung's rubbish crap software on it is annoying and I seriously can't be bother rooting and installing custom Roms on it, I'd rather do it on the Desire - simpler and have a bigger variety of ROMS and updates...
8. I think I just convinced myself - Desire it is! LOL But i'll continue a little, GPS works much better on the Desire...
9. HTC is a much better mobile phone company for android systems (my opinion anyway)
10. Sound is better on Samsung than on Desire.
11. Samsung gives you 2GB space to install your apps on Desire gives you on 512MB but I believe this hurdle can be easily passed through A2SD.
12. Samsung comes with 16 GB Storage...which, though it's a good thing, yet you can buy a 16 GB micro SD for the Desire...Problem solved
Yea, the list can continue, but these are my thoughts...it is a hard decision to make...but i think weighing the pro's and con's...Desire beats the Samsung despite it being inferior with some of the hardware specs, I'm sure HTC will release something soon to match or surpass Samsung...
btw, just a lil question...how better is sound on galaxy s? i got desire, but i got no samsung to compare them
just curious, since im mainly using phone(other than phoning ^^) as mp3 player
For me, The perfect Android phone would be the HD2. I am appaled they wasted such a superb device on a dead OS. To double the insult, they will not offer a WM7 update path (I realise that's down to M$ but thats no damned excuse to someone who bought it thinking it would be future proof for a year or 2)
I love the size of the HD2's screen (but hate the touch input, it's very poor), thats why I was drawn to the Galaxy S. The screen is simply superb. Even using the stock droid keypad, the experience is much better than the HD2 and Desire combined. It is a pleasure to use the keypad, and swype performs really well. The desire by comparison is dull and boring. The colours don't jump out at you, and it's impossible to use in daylight.
I read all your pro's and con's and can only agree with you (apart from the sound, as I haven't compared them. I don't bother with mp3's etc.)
I think I am definately leaning more towards the Desire at this point. Technically it isn't as good. The screen is poor when compared against the Galaxy S. The buttons are clunky and unintuitive (The touch sensitive buttons on the Galaxy S are it's best feature IMHO), and the power button positioning is a pain in the the you know what! But it is likely to be much better supported by the community, and the company and thats important to me, as I fully intend to get back into developing again. The Galaxy S's onboard storage of 8 or 16GB is a major plus, but as you said a Micro SD card fixes that (although slower).
I'm going to investigate the rom cooking side of the Galaxy S now to to finally make my mind up. I saw a thread asking for £9.95 to access an online kitchen, but I thought that was against the principals of the community. Can't stand people trying to make money out of other peoples knowledge. If thats the kind of thing to expect from the average Galaxy S developer, then HTC it is
I decided on the Desire as it was voted and chosen by multiple sites best mobile phone of last year. Also got an HD2 just because it looked fantastic and will probably be the last wm6.5 phone - lots of apps I like still not on Android.
It's simply a fantastic phone with great community support. Owning it 2 weeks I've already rooted it, got apps2sd+, froyo (defrost), now froyo with sense (djdroid)...
I loved the HD2 when it worked, it went back to HTC for a no quibbles change of motherboard as it was constantly rebooting. My experience with Samsung customer service and support has not been great I must say (have an Omnia). Battery was never satisfactory, gps fix terrible, TomTom was not working first 6 months as Samsung's gps implementation was plain bad...
A friend got the Samsung, waiting him to break it so I can say 'told you so'...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I decided on the Desire too. The GPS on the Galaxy was unuseable. It's a great device, but I think i'm going to get much more mileage out of the desire. So took it back today, and got a shiny new desire.

Not to mention, 32GB MicroSD's soon to be coming down in price! And performance wise, I doubt you will be able to notice a difference on a decent class.
Think you chose the better deal with the Desire, just for the overall quality it gives you, even in its relatively small stature... I wanted the Evo, it's not in the UK, the Desire is a perfect stepping stone till we get 4G, although a stepping stone as is any phone.
I think Desire it is for now, until HTC release a new better device...until then I don't think the Samung i9000 is worth it (even with all it's pro's)...I have a brand new one with me for sale...anyone interested?!
Unless you really use the 3D chip from the Galaxy S I would go for the Desire. Samsung's phone quality is rubbish, the Galaxy is no exception.
As said the GPS is very poor, while the Desire's is very good. The processor itself isn't much better than the Desire's. And if you get even one update on the Galaxy you should be happy.
The SUPER AMOLED is a bit nicer but that's mainly because the Desire has a relatively cheap AMOLED screen. It won't help you much in direct sunlight although they claim it will.
The resolution is the same and personally I think 3,7" is a better phone size than 4".
I agree with you on that one...
One thing struck me from using the Galaxy S is the screen quality and touch responsiveness compared to the desire. The Galaxy S pisses over the desire in this department. Add the better Camera and camcorder and I was actually thinking of moving from the desire to the Galaxy. I use the phone for a lot for navigation duties so to hear that the GPS is lacking is a real shame. Is it a hardware problem or something that can be fixed by an update that it will probably not receive by the sounds of things?
I have the HTC Desire and have ben using it since the past 3 months .. But seeing and experiencing the samsung galaxy S and its super amoled screen with gorilla glass and the bigger 4.3 inch screen tend for me to exchange it .
I don't know what to do .. Any help if I should or no ?

It remains a personal choice but if you are doubting between the two why not choose the nexus s, it does seem to have a flash (one of the big minuses of the galaxy s for me)
After being familair with both devices, I'd opt for the Galqaxy S. It's build quality is inferior compared to the Desire (although you do get over that quite quickly), but with ample internal memory, it heavily overshadows the desire.
I originally got Galaxy S phone. and now have a desire.
let me tell you this. if you use your GPS avoid galaxy S. the GPS doesn't work. it might be able to lock on your location when you are standing still after a few minutes. but start driving around and all of the sudden you are jumping from street to street.
also. Galaxy S doesn't have anything near the size of the dev community that desire has. it all might change since its very close to nexus s. but at the time there were no AOSP roms for it available so you were stuck with roms based on samsung's original rom.
I pretty much like every aspect of the desire better than the galaxy phone except the screen. even then desire has a pretty nice screen on its own.
what about the front face cam for video calls??
i find the galaxy s an awful looking and feeling phone may have more space & bigger screen, but i wouldn't swap my desire for it.
They are essentially the same phone so it comes down to the quality of the hardware and the desire wins by a clear mile. Desire for me.
Additionally The Samsung customizations are absolutely terrible ... They just destroyed android... I have tried one and for instance the Samsung application that replaced "people" is much much worst than the desire one...
If you plan to go on a lot of 3D games like the gameloft ones the galaxy s much better. Also the super AMOLED screen is probably one of the best out there.

Imho the devs working on galaxy s roms are not as good as the ones we have involved here. Also the gorilla glass is a lie: it gets scratched anyway, check youtube yourself if you want. Sure galaxy s works better for games, but it needs a lag fix or it will become really sluggish...on top of that samsung is really bad in terms of user assistance and rom updates. I trust htc way way more and i don't care too much about games, hence why i picked the desire. My 2 cents...

+1.
Samsung has better battery though, but Desire is clearly a better device. And between 8GB of internal storage and SD slot I would opt for SD.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Samsung TouchWiz looks fairly ropey to me - HTC Sense is nicer.
Samsung GPU is better than the Desire's - Samsung if you want to play heavy games.
Samsung's casing is lighter but plastic compared to Desire's nicer, but slightly heavier finish.
Two users that I know with a Galaxy S said they _needed_ the lagfixes on it - while four users of desire haven't needed anything of the sort.
I think the battery life is neither or nor there - my phone lasts about two days between charges - so does the galaxy S from what I've heard - think it depends how you use it.
I'm sticking with my Desire
feel like putting in my 2 cents as well.
Love the look and feel of the desire, galaxy just felt budget.
I wont ever buy a phone that doesnt have an sd slot (sorry apple)
Choosing between screens is a bit nit picky isnt it...can you really tell that the desire has less pixels or a less sharper image? come on get your microscopes out.
After i got my desire i tested it next to a galaxy in the store and pic quality was better on desire, also speed was better.
I think i have a thing for sense it works for me.
For someone who was previously a samsung fan for my last 7 phones (after nokia went to that rubbish symbian thing) i have to say desire hands down
Desire or desire hd, the hd has similar graphics to the Sgs and a better CPU

I want to add something here.
Galaxy S is not something you want to compare with the normal Desire.
Galaxy S belongs to a younger generation which is obvious better, Desire is also much cheaper than Galaxy S.
If you want to compare than compare Desire HD and Galaxy S.
I prefer to have a Desire HD instead of Galaxy S.
Reasons: Sense HD is way more beautiful than TouchWiz. trust me on this one. I have flashed the ported Touchwiz on DeFrost...pheeeewwwww...I wanna puke seing the Touchwiz UI...but this is only my personal taste tho'

It is very difficult to say...if you pay attention to the smartphone development this year, you can see that the technology advances mega rapidly.
There is already news about the existence of dual-cored smartphones somewhere next year.
I think, even Galaxy S and Desire HD will be strongly out-of-date if the news are true, not to mention the normal Desire which is already older.
The question of the term obsolete is therefore going back to you, how often do you want to get a new cellphone, how much are you willing to pay for it and what are you going to do with the phone.,
For me, I am planning only to use my normal Desire (bought 2 months ago) until the dual-cored smarties are available on the market. I will consider that my Desire is obsolete at that time.
I appreciate all you're opinions ..
I have researched alot into the galaxy S and desire is for sure better built quality .. But the samoled and hummingbird with the gpu inside tells me to gt galaxy S .. But than the ppl say lag and gps stuff .
I m all for rooting and modifying my phone to the fullest with developer refined roms .. Would the darkys rom and newer voodoo kernels fix all this problem of stock gps and lag problem ?
I m also more leaned towards galaxy due to the fact that Googles newest Nexus S is v similar in hardware to the galaxy S .. So there will b a big spike in development in upcoming months is what I think ?
I may be wrong ..

So here's the deal. I have my Desire for a long time. I got successfully cured from ORD But I still do touch it quite a lot
So my desire:
8gig class 4 sd card(I really need a bigger one, plus it's slow)
1ghz, sometimes undervolted, rarely overclocked
GPU+ drivers(I always check that the rom and kernel have them)
Oxygen HBOOT table
PlayerPro(used to have PowerAMP, until the trial expired )
Redux rom
AMOLED version(of course)
And out of my phobia that I still have a good phone I just _need_ to compare it to others. So here's a list, sorted by date... how I remember it:
Nokia N8 - nothing to say. But it performed surprisingly better then the 3GS in some parts
LG Optimus 2X Stock - Won, won everywhere but tegra games
SE x10 1.6 lazy fatass didn't update... and uses MY, MY gmail account! SO lazy! - I won so badly good, so, badly, good. Even though I thought 1.6 would beat me because it's well, 1.6, but I won, won good =)
Dell Streak 2.2 edited - oh man was that close! But in the end my skilled hands won again Plus he had that stupid ADW.Launcher(seriously guys, now I'll be rude, it's f***ing slow, just admit already, even the Regina 3D, 3D launcher is faster and actually battery saving!)
HTC Desire HD Stock - won, won, won, won, won
HTC HD7 Stock - surprisingly shocking fast! It surely beats the LG which was surprisingly... awfully slow, BUT it failed everywhere else (I expected that)
iPhone 4 Latest version no JB - I've compared with the guy a million times. I win everywhere everytime. Loser
Samsung Galaxy S Older stock - Won everywhere
iPhone 3GS that time newest OS+JB - won absolutely everywhere with a huuuge lead
Testing methodics:
No synthetic benchmarks
Just responsiveness and overall speed of OS
Few apps
Some veery intensive sites
And anything that comes in our minds the time
Discuss.
EXTRA NOTE
I've tried out other phones in the shop of course. But stock and presentation thingies? I mean I won, like always, but stock plus presentational? No really can't compare. But I won for all HTC including WP7 devices. Though would like to see galaxy s II and htc sensation.
bumpi bump bumpingo
I wanna smoke what you smoke.
This is pretty funny, I must admit LOL
Honestly, with the right tweaking it way seem like your phone is the fastest there is, but in real life, if you tweak evidently better phones, they will fly WAY faster than yours.
The problem is that you're comparing optimized stock against weighed down manufacturer UIs.
And desire has the longest development threads , no other phone has such development .

+1 and hard to see any other device coming close in the future. And the development continues.

Let's make it +4... Hands down!
Yep, development is actually a good (biggest imo) point in keeping this phone. I won't feel like it's old until my favorite devs will move to something else
I love my Desire. I love it so badly I can't quite explain it. Since the beginning the only complaints I have had is I think it's a pitty not to have a 4 inch screen (that would make this thing 99% perfect in my opinion) and also no decent video player with features like screen lock to avoid acidental pressing etc...
All in all it's a wonderful device. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's better than the iPhone 4. I'll addmit it's a great device and software and ROMs keep it fresh, but the overalll responsiveness of the Desire vs the iPhone 4.... I'd have to tip my hat to Apple, albeit by just "that" much.
I read the term GPU+ on this thread for the first time today. Would anyone elaborate on what it is and why it's better?
Also I guess Redux has this GPU+ in it. Can anyone tell me if MIUI also has this or any way to implement it into the already working ROM?
Well comparing the Desire to an iPhone is just unfair...that device has better hardware, hands down...if you wanna be fair you have to compare it to a SGS (which has the exact same cpu/gpu). Anyway, personally i'd still pick the Desire right now, if i had to choose between that and the iPhone, the main reason being that i couldn't live without the freedom that android grants me now...i'd only move to a better android phone, nothing else.
Come on guys, seriously, why would you have an iPhone? Isn't a wife more than enough?

Lol @ wife comment. No, seriously, I wouldn't say no to an iPhone, but given the choice I'd go with Android. Apple just gives you that "just works" kind of feeling that I love. But my Desire also gives me a "98% just works" feeling plus the liberty to do what I damn well please with my expensive hardware and software. Also I found it shoking someone saying that the Optimus 2x is slower than our Desires. I had one in my hands for over an hour and I swear to God that thing is fast, fast, fast! Can't wait to see what 2012 holds for us. I plan on trading my Desire in 2012.
Optimus x2 is faster for sure, anyway looks like (at least that's what i heard) many of the current apps aren't really optimized for new dualcores: most of the time only a single core is used, unless the app is very demanding, so at least for now it's hard to feel that huge boost in everyday use...i guess it's like it used to be with some older games on the first dualcore pcs, where you had to force the program to use more cores via driver, because it was made with singlecore architecture in mind...but obviously it's just a matter of time before we get our butts kicked way harder by new gen phones
Desire is the best
The desire is the best thing I ever bought. the modding and tweaking is just great, thanks to all the great devs out there

With such a huge development base there really is no need to buy a new phone, just change whatever you dont like on the desire and there it is

The HTC Desire has been a pretty great phone for me, love the physical buttons, and the rooting scene is very very much alive.
Just wondering, will there be a phone that have the same size as the desire, but with updated internals like a dual core processor and more ram? Seems to be trend for bigger screens and any dual core phone is usually 4" and up.
What do you think?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
The new samsung is so light you don't even notice the screen size difference in your pocket. Personally I would like to stick with HTC but if you were looking to buy a new phone right now nothing comes close to the samsung in terms of sexiness/thinness and lightness!
EDIT: and of course speed
I think the HTC Sensation ist the model you are looking for.
Same formfactor as Desire and Dualcore and so on.

Except massively locked bootloader, radio and kernel.
Swyped...
HTC have really let me down with their new locked down
Mentality. I also wanted a reasonable size dual core phone
But had to come to the realization that its never gonna happen
(someone prove me wrong and I'll eat my words) so I went for
The galaxy s2. It craps on the sensation. The free ram on that thing
Is appalling and its still choppy in the browser with a dual core.
Come on htc! What have you been doing? Not catching up thats for sure.
I would love sense 3.0 on hardware like the galaxy S2 but we can't have
Everything.

Doesn’t the Sensation have a 4.3” screen compared with the Desire’s 3.7”? I mean I’ve tried to use phones with screens 4” and bigger but it just doesn’t fit right for me....

Thats the thing really, I’m not looking for a phone right now, I can wait for another year or so. But I have always had my eye out for new phones. My 1st smartphone was the 1st gen metal iPhone, I used that since 2007 till my job required me to have a phone without a camera. I got the Desire mainly because I wanted an iPhone-like OS and that I could easily remove the camera module without damaging the rest of the phone. But I’ve fallen in love with the android OS and the amazing variety of phones there are in the market.
HTC as a company is great. I think they’re moving in the right direction. Just that their new phones have locked bootloaders and well, the rooting community is what I really love about the android platform.

Yes, and I agree - I want one with the same physical size as the desire personally...
I want a phone that's quad core, 32GB internal mem, 1GB RAM...
BUT
I want it smaller and thinner than the Desire, and have a battery that lasts a week with heavy use
Seriously, guys - it's not gonna happen. You want more features, the phone will get bigger and have crap battery life. Just enjoy what we have as this is a golden age for mobile phones
Sensation will be my next step.
The unibody is awesome and the specs are too.
I stick to HTC cause I just love their hardware and quality.
[Mobilerit]
I think it's worth waiting till Q4 to change for me, love my Desire and am very keen to have physical buttons(not keyboard) on my next handset but unfortunately it looks like the top handsets will no longer have them.
I'm with the OP on this one. I love my desire, still do, but am keeping my eye out for the next desire-like phone. I suppose the htc desire s is the next logical step, but from what I've been reading, it's not that drastic of a jump and therefore not worth the upgrade. I would have to say htc dropped the ball on this one. The desire s will not reach the same popularity s it's predecessor simply because it doesn't bring enough improvements to the table. While the sensation seems to be the next flagship, the large size, insufficient ram and internal storage are deal breakers for me.

Just read about the google nexus 4g. My interest is piqued, although the "monster" screen size has me worried.

Sensation seems to be the logical next step, though gaining root access and S-OFF is a bit of a problem at the moment. Last summer when I bought my Desire, I knew I would not have to change my phone until dual cores kicked in. Well, they came a bit early I'll probably keep my Desire for a year or two more before I move on to dual cores.
I do keep hearing that dual-core processors and Sense 3.0 are not optimized, but that won't be much of a problem once the device is fully rooted and ROMs start cooking. Think of how innocent the stock Desire feels, if you ever for some reason turn back to it. We have a monster now. So, it's all up to devs to figure out a way to root Sensation. After, it's golden.
rant... Disregard...
I was thinking on buying the HTC Sensation but its too big for me...
HTC Desire S didnt evolve much... and I love HTC Desire buttons...
Ill be waiting till IceCream Sandwich!
I know its v picky, but why has HTC switched to shiny buttons for power and volume? They look so tacky. One thing I love about the Desire - it looks muted/classy, not shiny shiny.
On the S Nexus S, I was surprised how little I noticed the increased screen size, v different to the Desire HD which feels massive (there's only a .3 difference, isn't there?)

I hate those physical buttons. They were OK when I bought the phone a year ago. Now I have to press twice or press them really hard to make them work... But I don't like the touch buttons on my gf's Wildfire S as well so I'm kinda stuck...
