i originally go the phone with 3.30 something and i forgot which method was it, but i downgraded to 3.26 i guess. i always kept getting notifications about the OTA to 3.29 but ignored them and tried using Unrevoked 3.21 but it said something Triumph and since then my 4G doesn't work, i get like PCS number invalid, check username/password(something like dat) i tried using i think 1.17 PC36IMG but i get Main Version Older or soemthing, Update Failed. anyone got any ideas. i got my Evo about 5 days ago.
wow u need some help. what method did you use to root? how far did you get in that method? how much farther do you want to go? 4g not working might actually be permanent, but that is only a maybe. us talented almost-devs/helpers at the xda will have you back on your feet in no time.
also, pc or mac? hardware version? hboot version? etc.

i have a Win7 64-bit, i got 2.02 hboot? i tried rooting but never got it. used simple root 1.47 snd got to 3.26 somehow. used to get updates to upgrade to 3.29 then i tried unrevoked 3 and bam. thats where im at now. noww if i could only get 4g to work and get root, id be happy lol
I have heard many times that it is very bad to run unrevoked on a hboot 2.02 phone. Try running an ruu to get back to 3.30, and then follow one of the hboot 2.02 guides out there

If your HBOOT version is 2.02 or 2.10, then no, unrevoked will not work.
From what I am reading... if you say you got your EVO from day 1, I assume that is June 4th, all EVOs from that date are from 0.87 HBOOT so yes, unrevoked would work for you.
Check your HBOOT version just in case.

I think what you want to know, is how to update to a 3.30.651.3 rom and keep root?
If that is what you are asking, then yes, you can look for one like in this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836728
You can download it and follow the directions, its easy. You should already be rooted, so if you install a rooted rom you should be OK.
If you are still on 3.29, make sure that you have S-OFF and ran Unrevoked Forever.
BASICALLY YES I BOUGHT MY EVOS THE 1ST FRIDAY THEY CAME OUT JUNE 4TH I BELIEVE. IVE NEVER DID ANYTHING TO IT EXCEPTH DOWNLOAD UPDATES SENT BY SPRINT. I FPUND OUT ABOUT ROOTING FOR FREE WIFI. DOWNLOADED UNREVOKED. DOWNLOADED THE ANDROID DRIVERS I GUESS BC IM USING WINDOWS 7 I NEEDED THEM. PLUGGED MINE AND MY GFS PHONE IN AND BAM! UNREVOKED HAD ME ROOTED IN MINUTES. SO I START GETTING A LITTLE COCKY AND GET ON THIS FORUM AND SEE IM WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE. IM TRYING MY BEST TO SOAK IN AS MUCH INFO BY READING ALOT OF THE INFO IN THE Q&A FORUMS. NOT EXZACTLY SURE WHAT FLASHING ROM IS NOT SURE WHAT A KERNEL IS. FROM READING WHAT EVERYONE ON HERE IS DOING IAM WAYYYY BEHIND THE EIGHTBALL LOL. SO WHATS A EASY WAY FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME TO ROOT THE NEW EVOS. WILL UNREVOKED WORK? ALSO WHAT DO YOU RECCOMEND SOMEONE LIKE ME DO TO AN EVO THAT HASNT REALLY BEEN MODIFIED EXCEPT UNREVOKED?

Ok...so you first got the EVO when it came out in June, rooted it, but then applied a Sprint OTA update and lost root?
I'm not entirely sure what you are really asking because if you already obtained root, why would you need to root it again?
No i havent lost root. My phone is rooted. My friends have the new evo with the 3.3 software. Before i tell em to drive up to baltimore from richmond i wanna make sure it will work. Thre reason i posted the info about my phone is i guess it would just be useful for people to see what exzactly i have and would need

So this spec is his phone or yours? If this is his phone, then you can use unrevoked3 (I assume since the build is 3.29, the HBOOT is 0.97 or so).
No this is my phone
He just bought his from radioshack 4 days ago so im assuming he has all the newest software. Also thanks for explaining the difference in unrevoked 3 and forever on my other thread. Im assuming i need to save any info on my phone before running unrevoked forever. Sorry to be bouncing around so much but im just so anxious to learn so heres 2 questions
1) when flashing roms, is unrevoked 3 a tool i can use. Can i just click custom then select the rom i want to flash?
2) for my buddys phone, what is the simplest way to root his phone since unrevoked will not work. Im reading the tjread everyone is referring to as 'like a boss" but its not making much sense
1. I assume from you asking about unrevoked forever, you are still S-ON and trying to get S-OFF? When you ran unrevoked3, it should've installed a custom recovery (ClockworkMOD is what unrevoked uses I believe). That's where you flash unrevoked forever and any custom ROMs later (the files need to be on the root of your SDcard - meaning not in any folders).
To get to recovery: power off, then when you turn it back on, hold down VOL DOWN and POWER and that will put you into bootloader. It may attempt to locate PC36IMG.zip/etc files but you prob won't have them which is fine, after that, select Recovery and hit Power and you should be booting into recovery.
If you can, I would suggest doing a nandroid backup of your phone so in case anything does get messed up while flashing, you can restore back. To do this, go to backup or something like that (sorry, I use Amon_RA's recovery so the wording is most likely different). Once you are backed up, go to 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard', and then pick the file you want to flash. After that, reboot and you should be good to go.
Some custom ROMs require you to do a full wipe (data/cache/dalvik-cache - wipe each one twice) before you flash, so to do that you go to recovery and choose the wipe option. Stuff like radios, kernels, themes, you only need to wipe the cache and dalvik-cache.
2. As for your buddy's phone....I am not too familiar with the new EVO root methods but I think the "like a boss" edition which is now updated to "Yea, I'm On Top" edition seems to be the new way to root the new EVOs until unrevoked or someone else comes out with another way. You can check out these threads to get a better understand and post in them too if you have any questions and the guys with experience when those methods should be able to help. Sorry, I can't be of too much help here.

Has anyone been able to root the new Evo's I just got mine yesterday. I had a rooted hero before that. I used the unrevoked3 and it said finished...My phone boots and is not rooted though. My version is 3.30.651.3 and the HBoot is 2.02.0000. Radio 2.15.00.09.01....if anyone has had any luck, please direct me. I have been a looking around on a few threads for awhile now with no luck. thanks
Also, ran unrevoked3 on Windows 7 x64 and xp x86. Both said internal error: couldn't find misc. Anyone any idea what this error is for?
I'm Having the same problem and I'm to lazy to do it any other way.
I did this yesterday. You should try using the universal auto root from the xda evo forums. If you already tried unrevoked you will first have to RUU back to stock.
Answer
Ok, after spending two days on this issue, I finally was able to get rooted. I did not want to downgrade to root and unrevoked3 was giving me the error couldn't find misc., so I found this guide and it worked. Remember my hboot is 2.02.0000 and my version is 3.30.651.3 with radio 2.15.00.09.01
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
If you are using windows, just install the hboot drivers from the unrevoked site. I was using windows 7 unlimited 64 bit by the way.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
Install the drivers first and then follow the link above step by step. Takes about 30 minutes total.

Thanks, I found a lot of people where getting the same error as me with unrevoked3, and they probably didn't want to downgrade and take chances. So According to the link I gave...
YOU CANNOT USE CLOCKWORK RECOVERY UNTIL KOUSH FIXES IT. PARTITION INFORMATION HAS CHANGED. YOU MUST USE THE RECOVERY THAT IS IN THE MAIN PACKAGE (AMON_RA) OR THE RECOVERY POSTED USING ANY OTHER VERSIONS OF AMON_RA WILL NOT WORK. THE ONE IN THIS THREAD IS CUSTOM CODED. FLASHING OTHER RECOVERIES LEAVE YOU WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO FLASH A ROM OR COST YOU 4G . USING ANOTHER RECOVERY COULD COST YOU YOUR 4G RSA KEYS AND BREAK 4G PERMANENTLY. THIS IS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT CODED FOR THE NEW PARTITIONS.
This has been the problem for some of the evo's out there. Hope this helps save some time.
Interesting, I didn't see the issue with loosing 4G service. I have noticed I'm not able to connect to 4G at the moment. Do you happen to have any links on the 4G issue?
Edit:
Never mind I can connect, i'm just in a weak signal area.
Unrevoked3 does not work for HBOOT 2.02/2.10 currently. The unrevoked dev team is working on it according to their Twitter page: http://twitter.com/unrevoked
Ok. I need to unroot because I've got some screen separation and some dead pixels on my Evo, and want to get the screen replaced at the sprint store so I don't have to pay for it. I'm currently running Fresh 3.5.0.1 with the stock kernel, Radio is 2.15.00.09.01, PRI 1.77_003, PRL 60671 and my hardware is version 0002. I rooted a long time ago using unrEVOked and unrevoked forever and then got the HBOOT 0.76.2000 using this. I've already done all the research on how to unroot and found that this should do it for me. My question is, will that method take away the .76 hboot? If so how difficult will it be for me to get it back? Also is there a better pc36img that would be better for me to use to make re-rooting easier?
Any help on this topic would be much appreciated.

I know they do, I actually called the local sprint repair store and asked if they could replace the screen. The rep said yes, but I'll believe it when they do it. I can live with the phone the way it is, but I figured if I can get it fixed then I might as well.
I hate to be a PITA but I want to make sure I do this right, is this the correct place to find the ruu? How do I know which one contains the .97 hboot? Like I said sorry for the questions, I've learned a lot since I decided to root, but the biggest lesson was to always make sure I know EXACTLY what I'm doing and why. Again thanks for the help

I unrooted with this method just this weekend and it worked pretty well. Took my phone in and they didn't say anything, unfortunately my phone couldn't be fixed so i will be getting a refurb unit I also had the .76 Hboot and this method did upgrade it to .97 hboot with 3.26 software build. Just make sure you run the s-on tool a couple times since I had the .76 hboot it never changed to s-on and still read s-off but once I started the PC36IMG and the hbooot was upgraded the hboot started showing S-OFF.
Ok, so the .97 hboot is in the 3.26 update? Thats what I was waiting for, thanks for all the help everybody. I'll post back here and let you know if they replace my screen or not....keeping my fingers crossed.
Myself and my wife both had black evos from launch day. I recently got the nexus 4g and she came back to the evo after trying the arrive. But this time she got a white evo with 3.70.651.1 with either hboot 2.02 or 2.10 I can't remember. But I could have sworn latest unrevoked worked with this. But at the end it says root failed is your firmware to new? what am I doing wrong now that I wasn't before? I know my replacement evo had 3.70.651.1 and hboot 2.02 and it rooted...
Any help would be great thanks guys
Go into the bootloader, select clear storage [factory reset]. Boot into the phone, enable usb debugging, make sure htc was installed at one point, removed when using unrevoked, install the hboot drivers, then run unrevoked.
I've done all that. If im not mistaking once you install hboot drivers once which I did in past then it should still work on any evo I root. USB debugging is on, it just says firmware to new root failed at the end. Is hboot 2.10 rootable with unrevoked?

She is going to have to get an older PC36IMG and let it downgrade in hboot. I have one that works but I am not on my computer that has it right now. I know there is a website you can find them one (the name slips my mind but I think it is like shipped roms or something?) Just get one of the older versions, update, and see if unrevoked works. (Just don't let the phone update before you run unrevoked.)

Just rooted two Evo's in the past week with no problems and they had all the updated firmware and software. Make sure you are using the latest Unrevoked software and try it on a Mac or Win7 machine. I get less errors on either one of them. Win7 make sure you load the drivers like previously mentioned

Reinstall the hboot drivers and make sure htc sync is uninstalled as it will interfere with adb commands. 2.10 is rootable, all evos at this time are rootable.
also dont forget apps like wheres my droid, lookout, antivirus mess with root process, also your computers antivirus will need to be turned off, because the root exploit is recognized as virus.
when you run the unrevoked file if on pc right click and run as administrator

newest Hboot 2.10 I believe is the number
Ok, a few users here have offered advice/assistance, but I fear this problem has been forgotten.
I am stuck with an S-ON, 2.3.4 Droid Incredible, and am looking for a way to acquire root again.
This happened a few weeks ago, with the leak of the 2.3.4 OTA. Flashed S-ON via CWM (not aware I would permanently lose Root), then flashed the OTA as PB31IMG.zip in HBOOT.
Now, Unrevoked no longer roots the device. HBOOT will not allow downgrading to a 2.2 IMG, nor will it flash any downgraded Radio/HBOOT versions. I've tried them all from Dougpiston.com, even the signed ones.
I've attempted to contact the folks at Unrevoked about this issue on IRC, but I can't ever get a reliable dialogue going with anyone, and I believe they are busy working on Revolution, for Incredible 2/S & Newer devices.
Throwing my hands up, I even called Verizon, gave them an excuse to send me a replacement, just so I could start fresh with a 2.2 phone, but I am out of warranty.
I really want to enjoy Sense 3.0/MIUI, even Cyanogenmod, but the outlook is not so good.
Is there any solution I haven't tried yet? Please help.
Unless Unrevoked or someone else finds a new root method you're pretty much out of luck.

Yep, same situation here, nothing will re-root if you did the GB OTA with S-ON bootloader. just have to wait and see if somebody comes up with something new or Unrevoked comes up with a new method.
EDIT: and I'm willing to bet if you get one from Verizon it might already be 2.3.4

That's most likely true. 2.3.4 is being pushed out to the Incredible now, so they would probably run the newest RUU on their Incredible devices.
I feel your pain deadsoulboy, and I've seen your posts lamenting your situation on other threads. Only solace I can offer you is that generally the source code and RUU are made available within 30 days of the OTA, at which point the developers are completely free to tear into them with reckless abandon and hopefully the folks at unrevoked figure things out.
It's also distinctly possible that HTC will unlock the bootloader the way it has with others of its handsets, in which case you'll be back in business.
Until then, my friend, I believe you are rootless.
i have the same problem. its been a couple months.... am i still hosed?
Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400
I used Scotty1223's instructions a few weeks ago and it worked like a charm.
So I burnt out my Cpu on my original rooted Dinc and got a replacement however after playing around on my replacement Dinc verizon pushed the update to 2.3.4 onto my phone. I would've stopped it but I figured I would just downgrade and root again however the new HBOOT 92 didn't let me downgrade i tried the unrevoked method anyway and i got a custom recovery so i restored MIUI on my current Dinc however i seem to still be unrooted? for example Titanium Backup can't delete system apps. i still have S-on and the new HBOOT 92 however i also have a mac so i am a little stuck and confused on how to regain full root access with s-off again any hep would be greatly appreciated.
