Does anyone have the problem where when you flip out the keyboard to reply to an sms (in the sms app) and after typing for a bit, the smses scroll up a bit and you can't see the text input box anymore? I suspect that it happens after all the smses are fully loaded in the app...

i find once in awhile that sms time fix app doesn't always fix the timetamp, but its better than nothing.

I have a problem when, deleting a message thread from within the thread. Menu, delete, confirm, etc. Then it automatically goes to the message list, but, pauses for 5-6 seconds before letting you do anything.

I believe it's related to pressing the function or shift keys. I think it scrolls up to show the icon at the status bar at the top.

I also have this issue. I'm somewhat relieved to know my phone isn't broken but am frustrated to hear that it's a longstanding software bug. Anyone know of any good trustworthy third party SMS apps? I don't particularly like the HTC one anyway.

Me too, it's a very annoying bug for a physical QWERTY phone!

There's a whole separate thread on the SMS/scrolling issue - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829535

FIXED: SMS Timestamp Issue

UPDATE: I've found a fix for this issue - AWESOME!
Just go to the Android Market and install the SMS Time Fix app by Matt Precious.
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-mattprecious-smsfix-pAFq.aspx
It works perfectly, and updates the time stamp on all messages to relfect PHONE time and not network time. HINT: Make sure the "Last Resort" option is checked in the settings and offset is set to zero. This little app now makes the Evo Messages app usable. Finally...
Hope this is helpful info
So, I've been reading and experiencing several issues with SMS timestamps on the Evo 4G.
It seems there are three distinct issues with SMS timestamps on the the Evo and I believe they all have the same root cause.
Issue 1: When roaming texts are received with the wrong time stamp, offset by several hours (typically 4 or 5 hours off). This causes them to not be threaded in the conversation correctly. Very annoying.
Issue 2: When receiving SMS messages on any network (Sprint or Roaming), the time stamp is off by an hour. The result is the same as Issue 1, but a less extreme example.
Issue 3: When texting back and forth in quick succession, SMS messages are not logged in the order in which they are received, and received text messages ALWAYS appear before sent text messages if they are sent during the same minute, regardless of which one was actually sent first. This is also very annoying.
I believe the root cause is that the native Sense UI messaging app is using the timestamp of the tower of each SMS rather than using the time stored on the phone. To prove this, if you use Handcent and set it to use "phone time" and ignore the tower time, it works perfectly. The thing is that I don't want to use Handcent and I want to use the native app. Is there a setting that can be tweaked to fix this? Has anyone talked to HTC or Sprint about the issue and is a fix in the works?
For such a major problem, I am surprised more people haven't come forward. It's a pretty significant bug...
Thanks,
Matt_TX.

I agree and its getting really annoying since it causes me to miss texts.
NM, too easy
Has anyone talked to Sprint or HTC about it? I am sure there HAS to be a fix in the works. The good news is that the native Froyo messaging app does not do this (as far as I can tell). I used a Nexus One on T-mobile and it doesn't occur. It appears to be using the phone's timestamp, as it should...
As long as HTC don't apply their "logic" (or lack thereof) over Froyo, it should be fixed soon.
I also can't believe that Sense UI stops the user from having more than one Exchange account. Android 2.1 (Eclair) does this by default. Why on earth would they remove it?
Anyway, back on topic... Please please post with your thoughts and discoveries around the SMS timestamp issue.
Thanks!
How is this related to development?

I'm not sure what you mean by "NM, too easy". Can you explain or provide any insight. Please help if you can. For those of us with this issue, it's REALLY annoying. I apologize if the question is dumb and there is an easy fix.
I realize that some of you may not feel that it is related to development, but I disagree. For those geniuses out there that make ROM's, maybe there is some way to fix this with a setting or minor change in the Sense UI messaging app...
Additionally, there is no need to berate someone that's genuinely asking for help. It's obvious that this forum gets the most traffic, and it's obvious that the smartest "Evo User" minds are located here. I don't think there is any harm in reaching out for help, isn't that the purpose behind these forums

Agreed. If its not happening with Handcent nor the AOSP apk, then its a direct HTC issue.
General Discussion. Also, probably not really that urgent.
./agree on all poins with OP.
I posted in Q&A about this same issues, with no replies 8(.
Anyway, I thought it was related to the modified prl that I installed. However it would do it even when I was on the stock prl.
Long story short, I called sprint and said I was having the issue. They said they were going to refresh something on their side, to wait 20 mins then power cycle the phone.
Did that and to my surprise it worked! Then yesterday I re-flashed a custom rom and the sms timestaps went all wonky. /sigh
suck it up and use handcent or chomp, they are overall better apps, just not as nice of a UI.
this has been a problem for quite some time. I've looked everywhere for a solution. This was a problem on winmo phones as well.
I switched to handcent and never looked back. Once you get it all customized, it's awesome.

look at this guy.
handcent didn't work on my froyo rom, not sure about chomp, didn't try it.
at work i always have this problem, texts are recieved 5 hours into the future, whereas the ones i send are the correct time. occasionally ones they send are the correct time so i have to scroll up and down and it is very annoying.
not a fan of handcents pop up notifications, i guess i could turn em off.
guess i'll just 'suck it up'

[Q] My DZ just lost all my old SMS/MMS Messages...

My DZ just lost all my stored SMS/MMS messages.
Got a new msg this morning but I couldn't view it in the standard SMS app, in fact there were no old messages displayed. I could see it in the widget view but it was the only msg there.
Deleted it and now I have no old messages.
Has anyone else seen this problem?
I'm running the stock ROM in my UK SIM free DZ.

Richard

The same happened to me last night. The sms app crashed first and when i opened it again all was gone.
I'm now running the 'SMS Backup & Restore' app to autobackup since backing up to Gmail isn't able to restore your sms back to your phone.
Something similar happened to me. All of the contacts on my sim card disappeared. I had to send them to my z using bluetooth from my old phone...
But my messages remained intact

It just happened to me, one hour ago all were there, but now .. empty list ..
That's very strange..
Happened to me once last month. Luckily I use SMS Backup+ to backup my SMSes to gmail. Interestingly, the messages are also gone from htcsense.com, which is supposed to back it up to the HTC cloud.
Seems like it's a known problem but HTC doesn't know how to fix it yet.
Happened to me yesterday also...
I suspect it's htc sense synching with the website, loosing all the data!?

Hello,
It happend to me last week. All my SMS are gone, but I'm not synching my SMS with the HTC Sense website.
Is that a HTC Sense problem or a general android problem?

one thing yall havnt noted is that how many text messages did yall have before it all got erased? On my g2, ive had around 6000 messages before it erases everything, then i just restore my backed up messages. But it is still messed up that it clears
Had the same problem, with over 1500 msgs sth went wrong and all the txts were gone ...
now got problems with flashing camera but will tell about it in different thread.
I had this happen to me once about a month ago.
I can't remember exactly how many messages I had, but it was no more than 200-300.
It occured while I was running CM6 RC3. Have not been able to reproduce the issue since...
Interessting, so when it happend with CM6 its probably not a HTC Sense issue.
I lost something about 1100 SMS with plain HTC Sense 1.72. I was receiving an SMS and I saw the message text in the notification bar. When I draged the notification bar down all SMS were gone.

Just happened to me as well. DZ and I updated with the OTA the day it came out. very weird. I don't think I lost anything important, but this is very annoying.
Use SMSBackup+. Works insanely easy and it saved my texts when I moved to CM7. Interestingly enough, the next morning all my texts were gone, restored the backup again and haven't had a problem since. Good thing is it will back up each message right after you get it if you want it to.

SMS Alert not always sounding

Hey guys,
I have noticed, that sometimes my SMS alert doesn't always sound. Does this perhaps happen when you are in a conversation, and leave it open and jump right back to the home screen. Therefore the conversation is still "open" on the phone, and hence it doesn't sound? If I go back to my message widget, the new message shows up then.
Anyone else had this?
Go to aplications>mange aplications>all>sound set>clear data
And then set notification sound you like ... tell me if this helps you

That's not fixed it.
Does it have something to do with the conversation still being open in the message app?
Are you on Android 2.2.1, software version 1.72?
There is a known issue with sms notifications on that version if you are. Best fix is using sms popup from the market to handle your notifications instead of the system app.

PLEASE HELP! My messages app is working soo slowly! when I open a conversation, it says 'Loading' and after about 5 mins, the conversation opens up. It's so slow! Why? Is it because I have all the messages stored in my phone memory? or is it something else? How to make it fast?

After much frustration with the slowness of the message app, I tried this and it worked very well so far:
From within message app, select Menu...Settings...General... and uncheck the first three (all three) options under "Recipient list settings."
I guess that limits your search options from within the app. For me I probably don't use that function anyway, and even if I did I would trade it for a quicker app. To me, text messaging is worthless if it is not quick, otherwise I would just call or email.

Messaging app lag?

Just wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing the same thing. I haven't experienced any lag with this phone whatsoever except for the stock messaging app.
1) Sometimes when I open the messaging app, the preview of a text messaging thread may be from many hours ago and then "refresh" itself to the most recent text. Essentially when I open the app, the preview shows a much older text message and then after a couple seconds will show the most recent one.
2) Sometimes when I push send on a message, it will take a second before the text is actually sent so if I continue to text, it will add on to the previous message until sent.
The only way I've found to correct this is to switch to the "SMS/MMS" tab, which seems to correct the lag, but of course any time you push the back button out of the app, it goes back to the deault "all messages" tab when opening. I also tried holding down the tab titles and it brings you to a screen which it almost looks like HTC was going to give the option to remove other tabs but the boxes cannot be unchecked.
Anyone else running into these issues? Find a solution?

I have these two issues.
This stock HTC Messages app automatically closes when you back out of sending a reply message, so it doesn't refresh the preview list like previous HTC phones on a reply. On the same token, it appears that it completely quits the Messages app, requiring you to load the names from the Contacts app when you open the Messages app without replying to a message. If you press Home rather than Back, when you open the Messages app again, it loads the messaging screen with the contact you most recently messaged, the person to whom you just replied. If you open the app and send a message, then press Back, it loads the list again, and everything is all good. It's all very odd.
Well glad to see I'm not the only one. I had tried Handcent, Chomp, etc with nothing but lag and other issues. Thanks to the response from NSRpxndxhou, I tried Textra and actually really like it. Best replacement text app I've tried.
I like how HTC's stock messaging app looks, but it ended up simply being too slow. I switched to Textra, enabled the dark theme and never looked back. Silky smooth performance, even with giant threads.
I am in the middle of an email conversation with the guys at Textra. I love the app. But my group messages are not working correctly. Those guys are great. Within one day I got an email with an update to try.... make that two updates. Just got another one while typing this.

Textra does seem nice, but there are a couple things I would miss from the stock messaging app. I like the ability to search ALL your text messages to find a specific text. I also prefer to have the time stamp on each and every text like the stock application does. I also don't like how it shows the contacts phone number below their name.
I would likely use this as a stock replacement if they were able to integrate all those features.

You may want to consider going into messaging->settings->general and adding a text limit (default at 200). When you do this you will notice your messaging to be a bit more zippy. This is because its not trying to open all of your old previous messages (which can be in the thousands).

I had a Messaging app issue when I had too many messages, which was fixed by deleting them, but that whole "reloading" issue seems to be separate.
Even with a few messages, it tends to reload upon reopening the Messaging app. Really weird why it does it...

Had this issue as well, found out that if you go to the stock messaging app settings > MMS > then connection settings, this gives you the APN. Copy that URL and paste it in the Textra MMS settings. Mines worked flawlessly ever since. Not experiencing any lag like the stock messaging app, and have noticed no difference in features.
