Does anyone know how to change the volume of the audible selection tone? It's the one that makes a sound when ever you press something on the screen.
I swapped out the default one with the one from the Galaxy S, but it's so faint I can't hear it. I've tried adjusting all the setting with sound manager from the market but have had no luck...

Try: Settings>Sound>Volume - options are presented there.
Post back whether this gets you where you want/need to be.
Absent that, have you tried the volume rocker on the side of the device?
I've tried all the volume settings, nothing seems to make it louder...
Figured it out, apparently it's controlled by the 'Media volume'.
Sorry for bumping an old thread but this might help someone.
I'm running Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread, and had an extremely loud "audible selection" volume. The fix was so simple but I didn't realise it... I just went to Settings > Sounds > Volume and saw "Ringtone" and "Multimedia". Adjusting these did nothing. But I had to SCROLL DOWN the tiny little dialog box and there was revealed a "system sounds" slider!
Success!

I noticed that one of my One Xs is clicking, it's quite a loud sharp click, slightly louder than the unlock sound.
It appears to be being made by the speaker, or at least caused by it. If I mute the handset the sound disappears.
I have noticed that it usually happens at either the start or end of a sound made by the handset. Eg. Screen unlock, tap sound, notification etc.
Sounds like an audio glitch to me.
Anyone else seeing this?
Recap: Sound goes away when system muted. Cannot recreate sound by tapping or pressing screen.
I get it too when playing words with friends' in silent mode. Its just the speaker popping. Probably go away with next update.

Same problem here !
Edit: find out it was the fault of the "direct volume control" option in power amp. Hope it could help you solve the problem
I don't know if I'm the only one that noticed this bug or if this is only happening to me or if this is a known bug but I couldn't find any thread mentioning thins, so I thought I'd just ask to see if I'm the only one.
When you go to Settings » Sound » Volumes, here you can set the volumes for "Music, video, games & other media", "Ringtones & notifications" and "Alarms". When you set a new volume, by dragging the slider or pressing on the location you want, you should hear a sound representing the selected volume.
If you start changing the "ringtones" volume, you will hear the volume differences when picking different volumes. Then you start changing the "music, video..." and you'll notice the sound that comes out of the speaker has the same volume no matter the level you've selected. If you now go back to changing the "ringtones" volume, you'll notice the same.
If you close the "Volumes" dialog window and open it again and now start by changing the "music, video..." volume, you'll see that it is now working properly, the sound volume represents the selected volume. But if you start changing the "ringtones" volume, you'll not notice the sound that comes out of the speaker has the same volume no matter the level you've selected. And if you go back to "music, video...", you'll notice the same.
Am I the only one with this annoying issue? Is it a known issue, I couldn't find it... It's just annoying and it's only the volume preview on that dialog that doesn't output correctly. The phone will still output each respective volume correctly.
It happens to mine
Anyone else? Would really like to know if it's a general problem or something I (and apparently surfer) am doing that I shouldn't be doing...
I'm a little surprised that I couldn't find anything on this. My wife and I just got our GS3s a couple days ago and are both of the opinion that the lowest volume setting for both rings and notifications is still way too loud. There needs to be a step between vibrate and the first volume level up. I like my phone to make noise, but I don't want the people in the next cubicle over to really hear it.
For what it's worth, mine is rooted, but stock everything. My wife's is straight stock.
I'm doing a lot of reading up before deciding on a ROM. Does anyone know if any ROMs have finer volume controls?
Thanks for any help.
Only option is settings, sound. Volume, and check what it's set to. I believe you can have your phone sound set to the first level above vibrate but the notification sound can be set to max at all times by accident or something. Just set it to the 1st or 2nd notch and see how it sounds.

Thanks for the reply. They're all set to the lowest level. I still find it to be a bit too loud, though. I think I'll just leave it on vibrate, which is pretty damn loud by itself.
Yeah I think the lowest ringer/notification is way too loud for a cubicle environment.
Would love a solution.
I too find them to be way louder than any of my previous phones with the exact same notification sound. On my HTC is was fine, but now it's way too loud for an office environment.
Is there any apps out there that can adjust this or is it something in the firmware?
Re sample the file.
If the volume is not able to go low enough, try a quieter noise. Or use software to limit the volume of the notification you are currently using. You would just have to find software that will let you manipulate the levels of the audio file then you can save it as a quiet version. If that makes it too quiet for environments outside of work than use one of those apps that automatically select the notification profile during work hours.
Changed my default notification and ringtone sound to one that I downloaded. It plays fine when I select it in the Settings --> Sound --> Ringtone/Notification. However it does not play when I get a call or a TXT. And yes, my volume is up.
On a side note, I am so ticked that I cannot set the ringtone and notification volume levels independently!! I cant stand the wait for ROOT so we get some good ROMS

Maybe a dumb question, but have not installed any type of profile app right? I use profile apps so I can quickly change to different setups for night, meetings etc.
Well I do have Sound Manager installed. Since the ringtone and notifications is tied together right now, this app is mostly useless.
I did verify that sounds were turned up. Once I selected a sound that is included with the phone everything is fine. really a pain.
I don't know why this is, but it's frustrating beyond explanation: Every once in a while the volume of my device changes. This is not an "official" change, as I always have this thing at the lowest volume possible, but every once in a while after a reboot or just out of nowhere, that lowest volume most definitely becomes louder. I'm accustomed to a low volume, so for my notification and ringtone to suddenly be louder always startles the hell out of me.
I cannot figure out why this is, and I realize the number of things that could be causing this is dependent on what apps I have which are far too numerous to list, so I'm hoping someone else has had this problem and knows the solution.
Thank you all in advance
Cm12 has a setting in sounds and notification that gradually increases volume over time. If you're on sense there is a setting that increases the volume if the phone is in your pocket or turned face down.

Unfortunately this isn't it - I have "Pocket mode" and "Quiet ring on pickup" both unchecked (unrooted, stock). I also thought it might be somehow tied to Media volume, as the app I notice this primarily in is Google Hangouts (that's about the only sound-notification I get outside phone calls), but that's at a vol of 1 along with everything else.

I have no idea then. I had volume issue with hangouts in particular in the past but it was from the volume being to quiet. Maybe try a different ringtone for it. I'm not sure what else to suggest.
