I'm a little surprised that I couldn't find anything on this. My wife and I just got our GS3s a couple days ago and are both of the opinion that the lowest volume setting for both rings and notifications is still way too loud. There needs to be a step between vibrate and the first volume level up. I like my phone to make noise, but I don't want the people in the next cubicle over to really hear it.
For what it's worth, mine is rooted, but stock everything. My wife's is straight stock.
I'm doing a lot of reading up before deciding on a ROM. Does anyone know if any ROMs have finer volume controls?
Thanks for any help.
Only option is settings, sound. Volume, and check what it's set to. I believe you can have your phone sound set to the first level above vibrate but the notification sound can be set to max at all times by accident or something. Just set it to the 1st or 2nd notch and see how it sounds.

Thanks for the reply. They're all set to the lowest level. I still find it to be a bit too loud, though. I think I'll just leave it on vibrate, which is pretty damn loud by itself.
Yeah I think the lowest ringer/notification is way too loud for a cubicle environment.
Would love a solution.
I too find them to be way louder than any of my previous phones with the exact same notification sound. On my HTC is was fine, but now it's way too loud for an office environment.
Is there any apps out there that can adjust this or is it something in the firmware?
Re sample the file.
If the volume is not able to go low enough, try a quieter noise. Or use software to limit the volume of the notification you are currently using. You would just have to find software that will let you manipulate the levels of the audio file then you can save it as a quiet version. If that makes it too quiet for environments outside of work than use one of those apps that automatically select the notification profile during work hours.

Running LeeDroid with volume steps set to 'Finest' (not sure if this is relevant) and the notification and ringtone volumes are still quite loud even when set to minimum.
I like to set the volumes to just loud enough to alert me while dozing but not loud enough to wake me when sleeping. Can't do it
I know I can select different tones and create audio profiles but I want this phone to work how I want it to, just like my good old Desire did/does.
Is there a mod/hack to alter the min/max volumes?
Upgraded to LeeDrOiD 6.4.0 and having the same issue.
Anyone with any ideas? We can control the level of auto screen brightness, can the same be done to control the volume steps?
I can't seem to turn the volume low enough at night to not be disturbing!
I don't know why this is, but it's frustrating beyond explanation: Every once in a while the volume of my device changes. This is not an "official" change, as I always have this thing at the lowest volume possible, but every once in a while after a reboot or just out of nowhere, that lowest volume most definitely becomes louder. I'm accustomed to a low volume, so for my notification and ringtone to suddenly be louder always startles the hell out of me.
I cannot figure out why this is, and I realize the number of things that could be causing this is dependent on what apps I have which are far too numerous to list, so I'm hoping someone else has had this problem and knows the solution.
Thank you all in advance
Cm12 has a setting in sounds and notification that gradually increases volume over time. If you're on sense there is a setting that increases the volume if the phone is in your pocket or turned face down.

Unfortunately this isn't it - I have "Pocket mode" and "Quiet ring on pickup" both unchecked (unrooted, stock). I also thought it might be somehow tied to Media volume, as the app I notice this primarily in is Google Hangouts (that's about the only sound-notification I get outside phone calls), but that's at a vol of 1 along with everything else.

I have no idea then. I had volume issue with hangouts in particular in the past but it was from the volume being to quiet. Maybe try a different ringtone for it. I'm not sure what else to suggest.
Is there some way to control Notification volume? It is insanely high and there seems to be no option to control it. Usually it is linked to other volume setting, but lowering any of the three volume sliders doesn't seem to take any effect.

Hey,
Are you running a custom Rom? I had the same issue with freedom os at first, then i found out that Dolby Atmos was running, switched it off, all good.
Peace

I'm on latest stock normal Oxygen.
Then i gues you dont use any Sound Enhancement Apps? If not, try Safe mode... Maybe it helps you to find the trigger
Cheers man
OnePlus 3 Safe Mode
Press and Hold the Power Button
Then Tap and Hold on the “Power Off” Option
When Prompted About Save Mode, Press the OK Button
Wait for the OnePlus 3 to Boot into Safe Mode
What notification tone are you using? I noticed that some that i had saved from zedge etc.. depending on their frequency are VERY loud. while others arent. I have recently started using the OOS default tones rather than download ones simply because of this.
eg: The tone "HTC Single Beep" (Zedge) is excruciatingly loud. The frequency is just right to send a ring thru your rears.

I'm on OP defaults so far, got the device two days ago and didn't change anything.
Facebook notification for example is really loud. As is everything else.

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one experiencing this!
I don't think it's a bug or something, just the minimum notification volume being too high.
I'm on stock 3.2.4 too (unlocked BL, no root) and it affects all the ringtones (both calls and notifications), not only some. EG default OP sound, Facebook, Outlook, etc.

It surely is a bug. Normally it should be linked to another volume setting (Ringer I think), which is also really stupid, but working. This seems like the notification volume is set to really high value and not linked to anything, which makes it impossible to control.

Mmh, ok, I thought that minimum volumes were just extremely high, never raised notif.volume higher than minvalue... Will check it!

If it is possible to make the notification even higher... That would be bad. The windows in my office would shatter.
still no solution for this?basic fail.
I have the same problem et no solution with the Oxygen OS i think.
Is everyone's notification volume lower than full volume? Notification volume as in ringtone, alarm, and notification sounds.
I can go to Zedge and preview a ringtone, and it sounds great. I set it as my default ringtone, and it is only 2/3 the volume the preview was. My stock notification sounds also seem to be about 2/3 volume.
I have went into every setting I can imagine, with no results. If anyone has any ideas how I can fix this without root, or at least test it out and confirm it is a Pixel thing, I will feel better. Lol. Thanks!

Everything is max. I'm not sure what it could be. It may be this way on all of them. I just noticed BC I don't have the best hearing and need the extra volume that I seem to be missing. I go to find the loudest ringtone I can find, then set it, and notice it isn't quite as loud as the preview was. I had to do a couple tests to make sure I wasn't just imagining it. It isn't a huge difference. Like I said seems like maybe 2/3 as loud. Maybe closer than 2/3 but quieter non the less.

maybe i dont notice it but it sounds pretty close to me and its loud. maybe they have a audio booster for videos and audio and the notifications are set differently.
Thanks for the response. My friend got his pixel yesterday. I'll do some side by side tomorrow and see for sure. Maybe I'm just getting old. Lol.
I just got the pixel xl yesterday and I'm noticing the exact same issue as you. Any alert, ringtone, text alert, alarm etc. When listening to music or to the original alert on Zedge its normal volume. As soon as that same alert is set as a notification it's significantly lower volume. I rebooted in safe mode and same issue so must not be an app related issue.
Coming from a Nexus 6 and 6P, I'm noticing this too. I usually keep my XL in the same desk dock that I used for my 6p, so at first I attributed the lower volume to the sound from the down firing speaker being absorbed by the dock. However, I'm noticing it when it isn't docked too, so I'll be following this thread for a solution.
Mine is also too low. The only phone I have had in the last few years that was loud enough was the Nexus 6. I am thinking of trying the WETA rom to see if I can boost the volume.
Sent from my Pixel XL
I've noticed this on the last few devices which were all Nexus. So I think stock Android is the main culprit. Earlier today the sound was really low. And I noticed because the lock sound it makes when pushing the power button was low. Seemed a reboot fixed it for me but it happens periodically. Did anyone happen to sideload the J build that was accidentally released in Canada?

before the pixel xl, never had this problem....not sure wtf is going on but it's aggravating
I have the exact same issue as the first post 7 months latter! Just got my Pixel XL 3 days ago. The default messages notification sound is just not loud enough on max. I got some louder sounds from the Zedge app. When I listen to it on Zedge, it is louder than I need it. Then I text myself and it is about 2/3 to 1/2 of what I get when I listen though Zedge. I can't hear it form across my house, it is very annoying. Did not have this problem with my iPhone 6s - and the volume was not on max. On the Pixel all 3 volumes are on max. Tried to adjust volume while the phone notifies - that did not help either. I am missing messages. Any ideas would be appreciated.

That's odd. I've only had my Pixel XL for about 5 weeks but all the volumes seem plenty loud to me. You can change the default notification sound to something longer or more noticeable or you can set the phone to vibrate as well when you receive notifications. You can also set notifications to blink the light on the top of your phone which might alert you if you do miss one. Good luck.
Just got a Pixel (not XL) and found this thread and same issue.
If you go above 50% on the ringtone volume it is fine and the notification and ringtone volume are the same, however anything less is definitely noticeably softer.
A way to fix is is to use a MP3 gain modifier but hopefully they fix it in Android O.
Are all these phones quite or is it just mine? Alarms are quiet, can barely hear ringtones and notifications. Vibration is weak as well, which causes me to miss calls while in pocket. Don't get me wrong, I love this phone. But my HTC ,10 had loud ringtones and mortifications.

Might try that.
Agreed, the external speaker volume is dismal at best. I could not even hear the phone ear piece until I flashed Elemental X which allows for ear piece gain... However no gain for external speakers yet.
i have recently had this problem as well. get it replaced. theyll send you a new one overnight if you got one through verizon. mines would be loud initially but after a while it was quite.
My problem is that there is one volume slider for both the ringtone and notification sounds. This is quite limiting (I feel like this was not linked in earlier versions so either they are taking features away or are simplifying things).
Does anyone have any magic tools to un-link these volumes so I can make my ringtone max and notification volume at 50%?

No, that is how stock android is. Other devices, like a Samsung may seperate them. But google leaves them linked by default.
As far as changing that... I really don't know. I leave my phone on vibrate all the time because I have a smart watch that vibrates on my wrists and I can check messages without even taking phone out of pocket.

Yes. I had an issue where if you continuously press the home button it would start out as a decent volume and then decrease. But when any type of audio would play it was super low.

I found a solution to this problem... Volume Butler! It's great, and does exactly what I need it to do (without even buying the "pro" version).

My sounds were all too low for me, i downloaded some iPhone MSG / alarm sounds as well as a Air horn sound and all those sound that i downloaded are much much louder then the default sounds
for me it seems that its something with the software because the speaker is very loud but, for example i download a song, listen to it and it plays very loud but if i set it as ringtone its very low when my phone rings. i was searching in the settings if there is anything to disable but cant find anything
Vibration power on this phone sucks.
I've had the 32gb and 128gb and they were both the same.
I setup the Moto X Pure 2015 for a friend last week.
I used it a half-day to ensure all was working fine.
And realized how much I really miss a proper vibration out of a phone.
Can't stand missing calls in loud places because I didn't notice the phone vibrate in my pocket.
As for ringtones - there are louder ones out there.
I attached a couple of loud ones in the zip.
I setup a Tasker profile to change to one or the other when I'm at parties or other loud places.

Thank you for posting them. The standard Pixel XL ringtones wouldn't wake up a light sleeper on the loudest setting, and most are tunes are kind of dreamy and sleepy. Its been so annoying finding replacement sounds, I installed Alarmy just to get louder sounds and of course soon after my network log starts spiking like crazy, with Alarmy opening multiple connections to facebook/google/etc sending off my data. Out of the entire Pixel XL forum your post was the only one I could find with links to sounds to download that I can load into the standard clock.
Many many tanks, now can get rid of another 3rd party crapware that slurps data like crazy.
