[Q] How to not lose 4G keys? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I've been doing some digging now that I'm on my 2nd Evo because I somehow lost the ability to connect to 4G on my 1st handset. I was using ClockWork and Rom Mananger then and at some point I wasn't able to connect to 4G.
I had been using Myn's 2.2 RLS2 to tether some laptops while on 4G at one point when I flashed something else(I can't remember what it was) but I had lost 4G by Nov 1st. I even reverted to some backups but that didnt fix anything.
I've read that ClockWork doesn't backup the WiMax settings/keys, which in turn could lead to losing the ability to connect to 4G, is this true?
Is there a way to prevent another catastrophe?

Don't go around flashing wimax radios. Thats a safe way to keep your keys. And make a nand backup with amon-ra 1.8. It makes a backup of your wimax partition.

I never actually flashed WiMax radios for this reason. I've only flashed Roms, kernels(netarchy, kings, and stock) and a few fonts/notification bars.

Amon ra backs up wimax partition like david says. It can be flashed easily from rom manager app.

[Q] 4g scanning loop

I've looked around on the forums and there doesn't seem to be much information on this. I apologize if there is and i just simply missed it.
My wimax_mtd output looks fine; the mac matches my mac on the back of the phone
a grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0 outputs the RSA certificate begin and end
however, when i turn 4g on, it says scanning...Connecting to Sprint.. then goes back to Scanning...
every once in a while, it will briefly display disconnected between scanning and connecting to sprint. I'm in san francisco and i know 4g isn't official, but my old phone was always able to connect.
Interestingly enough, I was able to get this phone to connect the day before. The steps i took are a little long; I'll try to condense it as i don't know what may or may not be relevant to getting the 4g working briefly yesterday; i haven't been able to get it working since.
1) new evo arrived in the mail; rooted with unrevoked using RA and made nandroid backup
2) flashed fresh
3) flashed updated radios, installed eng bootloader
4) eng bootloader caused a boot loop so i flashed fresh again w/o data wipe which fixed the problem
5) it was around this time that i noticed 4g wasnt working so i started working on fixing it
6) made a nandroid backup of the fresh rom because i had it just the way i liked it and didn't want to recustomize the phone all over again
7) performed nandroid restore of the original stock nandroid image i took immediately after rooting to see if 4g would work with that, however it put me in a boot loop
8) performed nandroid restore most recent fresh image, that got me out of the boot loop and for some reason 4g was magically working. oh yeah, just a note.. i don't actually live in a 4g area; i'm about 2 blocks away from where i can get coverage.
9) the next day i noticed that 4g wasn't working again. i had done nothing except reboot the phone and i could have possibly made a nandroid backup, but otherwise i didn't do a restore or touch anything else. i restored the stock image and then restored a recent nandroid like i did the other day, but this time, it didn't restore 4g.
is there any information out there about the 4g scanning loop and what could cause it? could it just be the network? maybe sprint/clear had 4g up to test and now they're restricting it only to internal testers or something? is there anyone else in sf downtown area who was able to get a 4g signal either yesterday or today?
not sure, I have the same issue though. I have an evo with fresh and the radio updates... same thing scanning, then connecting to sprint, then disconnected...
I notices your posted a while ago. This is still occurring with mine. running fresh evo 3.5.0.1

No 3G or 4G - 1x only - No Nandroid Backup HELP!

So my friend rooted his Evo with Unrevoked. I verified s-off.
He copied a PC36IMG onto his SD which turns out was some 2.1 rooted stock ROM. After doing that his phone could not make/receive calls/text or connect to 1x/3G/4G. Basically an expensive phone that has no phone functions. Everything else works (WiFi included). He flashed http://link.geekfor.me/rootedromzip onto his phone from http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...vo-install-clockwork-recovery.html#post165998.
When I looked at it, he still did not have a custom recovery so I flashed Amon RA PC36IMG. Full factory wiped data/cache/dvalik. Flashed Synergy RC1. Phone still could not make/receive calls and was getting Error 16 when trying to call. Called Sprint and they reprovisioned phone and fixed calls and texting. Noticed his phone is stuck on 1x and cannot connect to 3G when my phone next to his works fine. Did not test 4G yet since I have poor 4G coverage in my area. Cannot update his profile - just sits there like something is happening but it never completes.
What are his options here? Is it a bad radio or something that we can fix? Can we flash a stock rooted ROM and regain 3G? Remember, no nandroid was made unfortunately.
I would try flashing the latest radios just to be sure. And tell your friend to always make a nandroid backup to avoid this problem in the future.
Well his first time flashing. I think he mistakenly thought the PC36IMG as a custom recovery but it was actually an entire ROM.
Didn't have a chance to nandroid. I'm instructing him how to update newest radio combo and seeing what happens.
Update: Flashed latest combo radio. Updated profile and PRL. Still stuck on 1x even after reboot. Is he hosed? Does Sprint have to do something on their end to fix his EVDO? 4G isn't working either by the way.
Update 2: Wimax Keys Checker - https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joeykrim.wimaxkeys says that RSA Key is present. Relieved that he didn't lose his RSA key. Just can't figure for the life of me why he can't connect to 3G or 4G. Not sure where to go from here? Maybe trying to flashing latest stock rooted RUU? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110733
Bumping for some attention.
Hey, happened to me a couple of times, it will come back. Maybe wipe everything again, have you tried ##data# and entering msl key, wait... Have you updated his data profile in settings

Hello.....did that work for ya?

Ok, was on the road when I had wife reply...lol.. When you rebooted the phone, did you wipe cache, and dalvik. Then try updating profile? It sounds weird, but has worked for me,without even updating profile. I have had no coverage before after flashing a Rom,also, did just that, and it came back. If rsa keys are present, that is good. If you would be kind enough to reply, whether fixed or not, would appreciate it,anyway, gonna move on...

Did he try updating his profile & prl

Updating profile and PRL doesn't work. It keeps attempting to update but it is never successful.
I haven't had a chance to get his phone to just try reflashing a new ROM or stock ROM to see what will happen though.
He says using ##data# and entering his MSL code and changing EVDO to automatic doesn't work either.

I would start over again ... wipe completely with Calkulin's "fomat all" zip and flash a rooted stock rom like xhausx. Once the phone boots up, call Sprint and have them walk you through provisioning everything. Once all is well, then move into whatever custom stuff he wants.

You took the words from my mouth!
Is he Flashing the RUU's or just running them through the computer? Normally, you sync your phone or through hBoot and then start the program, try flashing stock Froyo and then factory reset once flashed, it helps clear out traces of old roms etc. If you need anymore help feel free to ask, I would be more than happy!
I don't think it worked.
Calkulin's Format, flashed Odexed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379.
It showed 3G but I think it was misleading. Wiped and flashed to evodeck and it went back to showing 1x. My phone has 3G showing on evodeck next to his so he definitely has 3G coverage.
I guess it's just time to call Sprint for a re-provision? Does it have to be on a Sense ROM for them to reprovision?

you dont need Sprint to provision, just get your MSL code and do it your self plus I would do a search for people who may of had similar issues and see what they did. Now if that does not work then why dont you check what your network settings are.. See if its set to CDMA(Auto) I remember my Touch Pro I could of set it to 1x maybe something is getting stuck. I think its in ##3282 you check it and I also remember an app on the market called network that did it for you as well.
If that does not work then flash 3.70 radios and then a 3.70RUU and start from scratch.
He already tried ##data#. He can change his EVDO to automatic but it doesn't stay that way.
Alright I don't know how I fixed it but it's fixed.
Just cannot get 4G now. Wimax keys are present. It keeps scanning and cannot get connect. Previously could get 4G at these locations.
I am running EVO as donor/target phone, my is only 1x speed, no matter which rom I try
Synergery, Mik, Stock-Rooted, differ kernal, different PRL, check the data profile Automatic, Try restore but can not cat automatically update, still need to go qpst to update my profile. I have been working on this for two weeks. I went back to my orig phone, it show ev most of time, the speed is must faster than my evo. Searc all over from goole, still no luck, Anyone any idea to try

i know this post is somewhat old. but Making a back up wont take hardly and extra time! always always make one unless you have 100% reliable roms already backed up.

4g not working, rooted

I am having problems getting my 4g to work correctly. I am rooted, running synergy RLS1 + godmode. I have checked my RSA keys, which are still in good condition, my mac address is still in tact, and I have the latest radio/pri/wimax/prl etc radios. I have tried updating profile after everything and still cannot get 4g to function where I know it works. Any other suggestions?
Have you tried making a nandroid backup of your current setup then flashing a stock rom (or restoring your stock backup, if you have one) and testing 4g again?
It could be a rom related issue - I've heard great things about Synergy, but haven't been on Sense for months, so I'm not familiar with the rom. If you're positive that your wimax is intact & you still can't connect, call Sprint & see if it's something on their end.

I will try that next. I have a nand backup made already but I am not always in an area where 4g is accessible. I should be this weekend so I will give that a shot.
Thanks!
well i'm on synergy as well and my 4g works i have an evo 4g on metropcs and i use clear internet (had to get my phone macid added as an additional device on my clear account) on my phone for 4g works just fine

[Q] Help Please, NO 4G/wimax

Ok so when i first got my evo 4g i flashed a aosp rom.I don't remember witch one, ether way it didn't have 4g and ever since then i havent had 4g conectivity even when i went to a stock rooted rom it only scanned and tried to connect then went back scanning so im thinking that the original rom i had flashed mabie messed up the wimax keys or somthing? does any one know how to fix this ?
im ganna try to ruu it back to complete stock and see how that goes but im pissed because before i was in an area were there was no 4g now that i am id like to use it my wife who loves sense has had 4g and just now telling me after two months i want to use it to seeing as im paying for it. any way any help??
First, download wimax key checker from the market. That will tell you if your keys are present... if not, then hopefully you made a nandroid backup of them and stored them someplace safe.

did you backup your wimax keys the moment you rooted? did you backup your original rom the moment you rooted? these are all great practices that are in threads for things to do after rooting.
hopefully you did one of them and if so that would be your best way to restore you wimax keys if they have been truly broken. Good luck

[Q] can't get 4g

I cannot connect to sprint 4g. My wimax RSA keys are good but I still cannot connect. Any ideas?
when you try to connect to 4g does it just keep saying that its trying to connect but nothing never happens? have you been flashing like anything lately?
yes. just flashed a pc36img update. It worked before but now 4g is gone. I flashed multiple roms recently but then I did an ruu update. It just keeps cycling. it sais that it is connecting to sprint then it drops. it does this over and over. I have rebooted.... still nothing. my wimax rsa keys are good but it still doesn't work.
sorry but im completley stumpted by your situatuion. only thing that comes to mind is restoring a nandroid back up with working 4g, have you tried that yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936945&highlight.=rsa+keys. Try the method in that thread to restore your keys.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127250&highlight.=rsa+keys. This method seems easier then the other, hope you get your 4g working again.
Same thing was happening to me and found out for some reason, my wimax key was "incomplete." For some reason, Amon recovery was not fully backing up my keys.
What happened originally was for some reason my wimax keys got lost (radio update or something) and I tried to recover an old Among backup. It restored successfully and my wimax key was now present according to the checker app. However, I had the exact same connection issues you describe. I then tried to restore an old Clockwork backup I had made. After restoring that image, my 4g began connecting immediately. This lead me to investigate further. After examining both backup files, I found the wimax.img created in RA was only a 2mb file while the Clockwork wimax.img was over 12mb! From this, I concluded that my problem was an incomplete image file. Therefore, wimax keychecker says its there, but can't and doesn't verify its size. To this day, I don't know why my RA images are so small so I keep a few old Clockwork backups just in case.

Update your radios. Mainly just your "profile" and then reboot. After that try to turn Wimax on. Then manually scan for a connection under mobile networks>4G. You should be connected if you are in a wimax area. If not then...get a refurb?
