I've looked around on the forums and there doesn't seem to be much information on this. I apologize if there is and i just simply missed it.
My wimax_mtd output looks fine; the mac matches my mac on the back of the phone
a grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0 outputs the RSA certificate begin and end
however, when i turn 4g on, it says scanning...Connecting to Sprint.. then goes back to Scanning...
every once in a while, it will briefly display disconnected between scanning and connecting to sprint. I'm in san francisco and i know 4g isn't official, but my old phone was always able to connect.
Interestingly enough, I was able to get this phone to connect the day before. The steps i took are a little long; I'll try to condense it as i don't know what may or may not be relevant to getting the 4g working briefly yesterday; i haven't been able to get it working since.
1) new evo arrived in the mail; rooted with unrevoked using RA and made nandroid backup
2) flashed fresh
3) flashed updated radios, installed eng bootloader
4) eng bootloader caused a boot loop so i flashed fresh again w/o data wipe which fixed the problem
5) it was around this time that i noticed 4g wasnt working so i started working on fixing it
6) made a nandroid backup of the fresh rom because i had it just the way i liked it and didn't want to recustomize the phone all over again
7) performed nandroid restore of the original stock nandroid image i took immediately after rooting to see if 4g would work with that, however it put me in a boot loop
8) performed nandroid restore most recent fresh image, that got me out of the boot loop and for some reason 4g was magically working. oh yeah, just a note.. i don't actually live in a 4g area; i'm about 2 blocks away from where i can get coverage.
9) the next day i noticed that 4g wasn't working again. i had done nothing except reboot the phone and i could have possibly made a nandroid backup, but otherwise i didn't do a restore or touch anything else. i restored the stock image and then restored a recent nandroid like i did the other day, but this time, it didn't restore 4g.
is there any information out there about the 4g scanning loop and what could cause it? could it just be the network? maybe sprint/clear had 4g up to test and now they're restricting it only to internal testers or something? is there anyone else in sf downtown area who was able to get a 4g signal either yesterday or today?
not sure, I have the same issue though. I have an evo with fresh and the radio updates... same thing scanning, then connecting to sprint, then disconnected...
I notices your posted a while ago. This is still occurring with mine. running fresh evo 3.5.0.1

So, I started out with 4g working. I was on stock kernel with fresh rom. Then I did a backup and flashed cm6. Ofcourse cm6 doesn't have 4g, so because of this, i did a full wipe and went back to the backup. Then i flashed 2-3 kernels like kings, and netarchys. Finally i flashed bakedsnack kernel and rom.
So right now I'm on bakedsnack. BUT my 4g doesn't seem to work. When i enable it, it says "scanning" and then "connecting to sprint". After that it loops back to scanning, and then to connecting to sprint again. Over and over.
I know it sounds as if I'm not in the 4g area, but this happens everywhere and anywhere i go. Even if im 50+ miles from my home (where it worked previously.)
Does anyone know how to fix it?
oh and i actually have clear wire at my house, which has the same exact coverage as sprints network, and right now i have 4 bars on my clearwire.
There are several things that can be done to fix this. Try deleting the tree XML file first, forcing your phone to generate a new one:
Using a terminal emulator or through adb on your computer....
su
ls /data/misc/wimax
(You should see a file with your mac address - several numbers followed by tree.xml)
rm /data/misc/wimax/xxxxxxxxxxxx.tree.xml
Then reboot. Your phone will generate a new tree file when it boots back up. Flip on 4g and see if that fixes it.

Have the same issue good luck I havent found a fix other than a replacement phone
I have the correct mac I need I have certs etc etc
just reflashed it to start over. Seems to have teh same problem. Still have the 0016. Re doing it again now.
Same problem still, except now it does:
Scanning, connecting to sprint, turning off, turning on, scanning, etc..
sorry for the bump, but i had a nandroid backup of my old fresh rom with stock kernel. At first i wasn't expecting much when i restored, but i just saw that in the /data/misc/wimax dir, there are 2 xml files. One of which has my own hex (or w/e its called), the other one is 0016. I deleted the 0016, but it keeps re appearing. Is there any way to fix this?
I tried to adb remount it, but for some reason i cant. Is there another way to check to see if my rsa keys are still there?
Thanks
edit: I have now successfully changed my xml to the mac address, but 4g still doesnt work =/
I've had the same issue for a while now. I was on the 2.2 "leak" and it was still working. I used the roll back hack to get back and then went up to rooted 2.2. Since then, I've had nothing.
- My MAC was wrong, but the fastboot fix got that worked out.
- My tree.xml was wrong, but I renamed it and a new one with the right MAC in the name was generated.
- I went all the way back to stock unrooted (2.2 Final RUU) S-OFF and everything and still nothing.
I have mine sitting next to a friends and he's got 3 bars. Mine just keeps scanning, connecting and turning off then turning on (same cycle as the OP) without getting anywhere. I'll be watching this thread to see if there are any suggestions posted that I haven't seen in my searches. I think I've tried 4 ideas from other threads to no avail. If I don't get this worked out I'm going to have to visit the dreaded Sprint store and kill half a day waiting on them to test and most likely replace the damn thing but whatever.
Yea, im taking mine to the sprint store today. Tried everything. I cant even update it to 2.2 using the normal updater thats in the phone. Just fails at signature verification.
The problem is, I bought mine on craigslist, would they still replace it? Or am i ****ed?
Got up this morning and turned on (or tried to turn on) 4G via the widget. Nothing. Went to settings to try and activate, and 4G is greyed out, with "Turning on..." showing. Went to 4G settings, and everything is greyed out (with "Turning on..." showing).
Pulled the battery and brought back up, same problem.
Did a hard reset. When the phone came back up, first thing I did was to try Wimax. Have same issues.
Phone was updated to Froyo a couple of weeks ago and has been working great until this morning.
Any ideas? The thought of getting a refurb phone doesn't thrill me. In the past the refurb I received (not Evo, but others) were worse than the one I sent it.
Thanks,
Kelly
Couple of questions.
Are you in a 4G market, or in a "testing" area?
Rooted, or Stock?
Try this.. Start 4G, while it is starting goto Settings, About Phone, Hardware Information. Copy down your MAC address for 4G. Shut the phone down, and remove the battery. Compare the address you wrote down to the one listed inside the battery tray. Do they match?
I'm in Dallas (established market)
Stock (never rooted)
Tried what you suggested. When I first went into settings, it showed the MAC as "unavailable". I powered down, removed the battery and copied down the Wixmx MAC, then turned on the phone.
Brought phone back up. Tried to activate Wimax, but apparently it never did. MAC shows "unavailable" (same as when WiFi or Bluetooth are off). Apparently, the Wimax radio isn't powering up?
Ok, I am at work so I am limited to doing stuff via my phone. But there is a post about checking your mac address xml file. Find that post, and follow that procedure to verify your mac address is borked.
Next is to check your RSA keys. You do that by using adb shell, remounting /system as read/write. Then typing in
grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
You should get at the end of the listing RSA PRIVATE KEY BEGIN, and RSA PRIVATE KEY END. If you dont get that then your 4g keys are lost, and you will need to replace the phone.

Never rooted? Is stroll into Sprint and have them fix it.
I had the same problem once, although in my case it was 4G and WiFi. That was my fault though. If I remember, I hadn't properly cleared my caches between roms and flashed the newer radios twice. I just had to completely wipe and reflash to fix it. That's probably not your problem though. I guess my post isn't all that helpful. Sorry, and good luck.

I'm having the same problem, but I have a rooted EVO.
I've tried:
Wiping both caches twice, then reflashing the latest WiMAX radio
I verified the MAC address on the back on my phone matches the MAC address under hardware information on the phone
I verified I still have my RSA keys
I'm running the stock rooted ROM version 3.26.651.6. Does anyone have any other suggestion I could try to restore my WiMAX?
Try doing a profile update, failing that try a master reset (##786#).

I'd try doing a complete data wipe / factory reset. Reflash the rom. And check to make sure wimax doesn't work before trying to flash the wimax update. A lot of roms have the update already included. If you try flashing the radio twice it causes problems I believe.
Now it works in many areas in NYC, including my apartment in Inwood, Times Square, UWS, UES,..
But when the 4G signal is weak, the phone hesitates which one to use, 4G or 3G, and sometimes it won't decide, and get a "Data" error.

Huh.. I work over at 49th and AoA, and I don't get 4G...even outside.. You suck..
Hi. Well I had rooted my phone and was running CM6.1.1 with snapdragon kernel. When the evo shift came out, I bought it and changed over to the shift. 3days in to using shift, the micro usb port failed and would not charge. It wouldn't even recognize when connected to my computer. So had to go and return it.
But when I changed over to evo, it started having problems with data connection. I could make calls but it would not be able to connect via 3g. It could connect through wifi but that was it.
So I unrooted my phone using .ruu and haven't tried it yet. Could you guys help me out and advise me in what option I have. Thanks again.
I had a similar problem when I had my hero....I lost 3g and ended up finding the solution was to wipe all, flash a sense rom and then go back to cyanogen....
Thanks. I'll try that and see what happens. I'll switch to evo tomorrow and see how it goes..
i had a similar problem with 3g data being very faulty after i updated all of my radios to the latest versions. what i did to fix the problem was full data/cache/dalvik wipe and then flash the radio: EVO_Radio_2.15.00.11.19, flash the wimax:EVO_WiMAX_27167_R01, and flash the PRI: EVO_PRI_1.77_003. Prior to that, i had the latest PRI and it would constantly screw with my data connection, so whatever you do, do not update to the latest PRI. Its actually been said that something weird is up with it and that this problem is common.
the radios can be found right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
good luck man, hope this helped!
I have the same issue. I went from CM7 to a sense ROM and I still dont have date even after the new radio updates. Is there anything else I can do?
Have you already tried reverting back to your old radio that worked?
sure did. Nothing.
I actually did a full unroot using ruu. Then started my phone again back in stock mode. It worked after full unroot. Now I re-rooted my phone and back to using CM6.1.1 with snap dragon kernel.
Same Issue Please Help
Im having the same issue as the OP. I went from CM7 to a sense ROM and lost my Data connection. I can only connect through wifi. However I can't update my profile or my PRL This is a pretty big issue for me as I can't use any data features on the phone except when connected via wifi.
Can someone please suggest a way to re-establish my ability to connect to the sprint network. I do not have 4G in my area so I can't try that route. I have searched the forum for the last day and a half and still haven't found a solution. Ive tried reflashing the newest radios and still no luck. I have cleared the dalvik, cache and factory data reset mutiple times and I have tried sprint lovers newest ROm and also even tried reverting back to the original backup I took when I first rooted before I flashed any ROM's and still no luck. I also tried the ##3283#/MSL code/Data/ restore option and still nothing.
ANY Suggestions? Unrooting would be a last resort option followed by going to sprint and getting a new phone.

going to a sense rom, dialing ##data# and then entering your msl, then going to edit mode, top section, hit menu, and do a reset?
this usually fixes alot of data issues from what i am aware. It won't harm your phone anyway.
Yeah I have tried the ##data# restore multiple times and still nothing. It will reboot and begin the hands free activation but it never successfully completes it. Afterwards when I try to update profile it just sits in a loop saying "the network is preparing you services..." for 20 mins and then times out with nothing happening. I even tried the ##data# restore method again after reading this, for good measure, and still nothing.
Is it possible to connect via 4G and update my profile even tho I cant via 3G? I'm about an hour away from any 4G service I think Cincinnati may be the closest.
this is extremely frustrating and the worst part is that I dont know how it happened as I followed every instruction to the tee and Ive flashed mutiple multiple ROMS over the last 6 months and have had no problem until I tried going from CM7 to myn's warm2.2 rls5. After flashing the ROM and wiping EVERYTHING except the SD card I flashed the new Radio's (Cualkin's Combo pack with the newest Radios) and that's when I noticed the data connection was gone. I'm not sure as which step of the process caused the issue as I didn't notice it until I began to go thru the initial setup on the phone and was unable to connect to my gmail account.
I have backed up a few versions of rom's. Would they have the Data info I need and maybe a could just copy and paste a file or does this info need to be downloaded from sprint in order to setup the phone?
Please any advice??? I'd like to try all my options before I reroot and exchange it, If unrooting and returning is my only option can someone please point me to a good guide for the process? I used Unrevoked 3.21 for the root.
I partially solved my issue in another thread, but still cannot connect to 4g. I had initially thought my RSA key was gone, but was able to find it in an old nandroid and reflash it. KeyChecker now says my Key is Ok. I verified my MAC address is correct and have flashed the most recent wimax radio. I have also updated my profile and prl. However, I still cannot connect to 4G. I was in Minneapolis in a strong 4g area and turned on the 4g. It turns on, scans, says connecting to sprint, and then quickly returns back to scanning, finds sprint, tries to connect, then scans again. I tried this is multiple spots all over the city but still couldn't connect. I am running Fresh 3.5 with the stock kernel and have connected to 4g in the past prior to temporarily losing my keys. I have flashed different sense and aosp roms with the same result. Someone please help! I am stuck! I would like avoid unrooting if at all possible, but will if that is a last resort.
I would call Sprint tech support and see if they could do anything from their end. You can try changing kernels or flashing a rooted stock rom to see if the problem gets corrected. For a rooted stock rom, download this and flash from recovery after doing a full wipe. Make a nandroid backup of your current setup first.

OK, Sprint was no help. As of now, my wimax key is intact and Mac address correct. If I am on Fresh rom 3.5 and turn on 4g in a solid 4g area, it turns on, scans, finds Sprint, then disconnects, over and over, never really connecting. Any other Rom I have tried, both sense and aosp, 4g won't even turn on, it just gets stuck at "turning on". I have also tried different kernels. I don't know what else to do. I upgraded my radios and profiles, would downgrading do anything?

Same exact thing here. Took me hours to figure it out but here's what I did..total pain in the arse! I basically updated radios in succession. I loaded an old Sprintlovers PC36IMG.zip that had all the old radios (pri 1.77). After that I updated radios again, pri 1.90. Loaded up my Dark EVO 2.2 ROM, made sure 4G was working. Then while in recovery I flashed Caulkins .zip with all of the newest radios, loaded CM7, loaded GAPPS and BAM...everything is working great....total pain and probably a lot of unnecessary steps, but it worked!
As an update, I ran wimax_ mtd in terminal and it ran through fine, everything passed and was OK, except next to "check firmware file" it says not match and next to "verify app fireware key" it says not match. Any ideas what that means?? Can you give me exact details with file links to how you fixed yours?

I cannot connect to sprint 4g. My wimax RSA keys are good but I still cannot connect. Any ideas?
when you try to connect to 4g does it just keep saying that its trying to connect but nothing never happens? have you been flashing like anything lately?
yes. just flashed a pc36img update. It worked before but now 4g is gone. I flashed multiple roms recently but then I did an ruu update. It just keeps cycling. it sais that it is connecting to sprint then it drops. it does this over and over. I have rebooted.... still nothing. my wimax rsa keys are good but it still doesn't work.
sorry but im completley stumpted by your situatuion. only thing that comes to mind is restoring a nandroid back up with working 4g, have you tried that yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936945&highlight.=rsa+keys. Try the method in that thread to restore your keys.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127250&highlight.=rsa+keys. This method seems easier then the other, hope you get your 4g working again.
Same thing was happening to me and found out for some reason, my wimax key was "incomplete." For some reason, Amon recovery was not fully backing up my keys.
What happened originally was for some reason my wimax keys got lost (radio update or something) and I tried to recover an old Among backup. It restored successfully and my wimax key was now present according to the checker app. However, I had the exact same connection issues you describe. I then tried to restore an old Clockwork backup I had made. After restoring that image, my 4g began connecting immediately. This lead me to investigate further. After examining both backup files, I found the wimax.img created in RA was only a 2mb file while the Clockwork wimax.img was over 12mb! From this, I concluded that my problem was an incomplete image file. Therefore, wimax keychecker says its there, but can't and doesn't verify its size. To this day, I don't know why my RA images are so small so I keep a few old Clockwork backups just in case.

Update your radios. Mainly just your "profile" and then reboot. After that try to turn Wimax on. Then manually scan for a connection under mobile networks>4G. You should be connected if you are in a wimax area. If not then...get a refurb?
