heres the deal: i want to try out cyanogen, but my primary rom is Skyraider. but there is one problem... my dinc is my primary phone (cant wait til my g1 gets here ), and has all my 9-somesh*t contacts, and messages, and everything else. does anyone recommend any apps to backup and restore contacts, messages, and all that good stuff? also, does anyone have any tips, tricks, or mods i can furthur customize cyanogen? thnx a lot!
Well, If you go ahead and save all your messages onto your gmail account as soon as you sign into it on the new rom all those contacts are ported. SMS I have not found a way to save but any important info just save it somewhere else.

I use the SMS Backup app, it will backup all your texts to your gmail. You can specify what tag to use. The app is free.
Pretty sure Titanium Backup doing back up all apps + system data will do this

do not try restoring system settings across ROMs - not a good idea.
I use my backup pro. Works extremly well for me!

When I'm trying out different ROMs, the thing that always annoys me is that I lose all my messages and calls. I looked in Titanium Backup and couldn't find one. What app (not a nandroid backup, that's overkill) will allow me to keep my stuff when I switch ROMs that require wipes.
Bonus points if it can save my Scene from HTC Sense.
Mybackup pro
TitaniumBackup will most certainly backup and restore your sms and call history. It will even save your SenseUI scenes and icon placement. Use the filters to select system only, then unchecked all the red settings. Only caveat is that this only works going from one SenseUI to another. If you try to restore in a froyo rom, you will likely get Force closes on lots of stuff.

I tested all the green system ones that looked relevant (ex. not calendar) and none of them restored call logs or sms messages. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place...

I think the green one that says dailer, that one seemed to load my history, and then there is a couple that start with sms, which loads all of your messages. I haven't had a problem.
I just went with MyBackup Pro. It works how I expected, and also offers online backup. Thanks for all your help, though.
UPDATE - deleted old post...
So I just finished Rooting my phone and putting a new rom.
I used the following root guide:
[TUTORIAL] EVO Full Root|OTA Root|Nand Backup/Restore|Flashing|for n00b's + videos
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
Now I realized all my phone contacts are gone....
I wished he had put a disclaimer about that.
and what sucks is, I dont have a backup to those contact # either so im screwed.
Anyways my question is: Once I have all my contacts and I wish to change ROM.
Will I lose all my datas?
If I download a game app - IE - Tower Defense - will it keep game saved, unlocked maps, etc etc?
if it doesn't, how do I transfer contacts, game saved to the next Rom when I wipe (I assume wipe = format which it deletes everything).
I already forsee im gonna test all the roms out there but I HATE to re-put all my contacts over and over again...
im already mad I lost half of my contacts I wont be able to retreive.
with that said - I guess I have few more question than.
WHAT IS Nand Backup? what does it do?
What is Titanium Backup? what does it do?
Do I need 1 or both?

Thanks for the link but it doesnt answer some of my other questions.
what kind of pre-loaded apps comes with each one?
you will have to individually check out their threads to find out what they have included/excluded, but for most of the ROMs, they generally include all the stock stuff(sometimes removed sprint apps or an easy way of removing them) and a few include an app for rom specific updates/changing profiles. besides that most of them dont preinstall any extra apps.

This man speaks the truff.
Most roms are pretty identical, just check them out and view which one you would like the most.
I suggest making a nandroid backup of what you have now and then installing different roms and testing them out. Find the one thats fits you and stick with it.
Evio is my current rom, it seems to be the only one where the cache is on the /cache partition instead of the data partition, and everything is working, he adds a few apps but you can wipe it to get the full 427MB for apps. also u can uninstall any sprint apps you dont want with titanium backup.
BTW good luck on the 60 fps, expect 50-55fps.
Use the evo kitchen. Search for it. Lets you make one to your liking.

UPDATE - check first post for my new issues. Thanks to the previous posts answering my other concerns.
for starters save all contacts to gmail that will help you to avoid having to re-enter your contacts everytime, when you link your gmail to your phone it will pull your contact. since u already lost em id recommend going to gmail now and adding them manually, had my mom do this in the begining when she 1st got her moment, and i found out after the fact on my hero.
Nandroid is a full back up of your phones current state (rom wise). so when you have one set up the way you like it make a nandroid so when you decide to jump to another rom or you flash a soemthing you dont like you can revert back to your previous state. its like system restore for windows but 20x better.
Titanium backup lets you back up apps uninstall apps etc etc, it does alot, too much for me to explain, i say check out their site. also titanium back up is the one you would need if u wanted to back up apps and restore them on another rom.
Titanium back up was how i was able to keep my free copy of lets golf xD
Im about to flash to a new ROM from Myn's Warm 2.2. Love the ROM but I wanted to venture to another to test out. However, I have an application called AuthAnvil, it is used at work and is a variable pin code that syncs with a server. Is there any god forsaken way to save the app data so I do not have to jump through the hoops at work to resync the app. I did a full ROM backup just in case and also a Titanium backup. Will this work for me to restore it to the new ROM all settings in tact?
It should work fine if you backed up the app and system data to go with it. What I do in TB is make a custom filter with apps and their data that are really important that way I only back up what I need.
I make a filter called important then restore my apps/data to new rom, works flawless.

yea but TB has known to be unstable when going from dif. types of ROMs, like from froyo to ginger, sense 1 to sense 2.1 or 3.0, etc. I would look on your SD card to see if any data is on there.. or if possible move app to SD then copy data, put back on after reflashing.
Its been a while since I posted on this but I have diagnosed this a few separate times and Finally! the authentication app company actually had enough complaints to post something on their FAQ.
But it seems that there are certain app's like say an authenticator that when you download it to a sense based rom you can flash all day long to different sense based roms without any issues. Once you go to any AOSP roms it will break the key generator. You can restore it all you want, it will not display the digits.
Now my real curiosity is that its just an app, it doesn't know the difference thats in on a HTC sense based phone or a Samsung. Am I looking to much into it because it is a Two factor authentication app and more stuff runs then I realize? Or is the app design flawed?
I appologize upfront if this is a n00b question but something is anoying me big time.
I like flashing ROMs and occasionally do a fresh and clean install. I have backed up everything using Titanium Pro and Nandroid but I tend to leave them alone since everything can be freshly installed and what's the use of a clean install if you then restore everything right?
Now for my contacts I sync with 2 Google accounts, FB, Twitter, Linked-In, Skype, Whatsapp and some more less famous stuff. Everytime I do a clean install I have contacts double in my persons app and I have to manually merge them.
This is costing me a lot of time. Is there a way to backup these contacts "merged" and restore them, without loss of the sync mechanism with those accounts? Or is there at least a way to let the merge take place somehow automatically?
The best way to do it would be to EASY merge the contacts, like HTC Sense shows you duplicates and you can just one-click-merge, but since I have found no information whatsoever on this being a possibility on ICS, I guess you can try to use TB to do that.
When you flash a new ROM, guessing its some updated version of ICS, you can try to restore DATA only to the People app after actually making sure that all your accounts are added. So just before starting to manually merge them, go to TB and restore DATA only from your most recent backup from the earlier ROM.
Haven't tried that, but will do once I flash a new one. Running 4.0.3 TEAM KANG AOKP now!

I thought about that too but what I'm afraid of (although start over with a clean install would solve that too) is that all my contacts (hundreds) would show up double, making it even worse. One from synch and one from restore ;-) But.., certainly worth a try the next flash....
Have you found a solution?

Nope, sorry, merging them every single time I do a clean install. But since I am using my current ROM for quite some time now (stable and fast) I don't have the need for clean flashing. A dirty flash is sufficient.

are all the contacts stored on google's servers? you can merge the contacts through there.

Yes they are, but somehow I still get random contacts that aren't merged after synching. It is not reproducible since the results are not consistent. I guess it is somewhere on my side but after a clean install which I do once a month at most it rakes half an hour to merge the ones that went wrong so it's not worth the effort for me to deep dive this one

Whenever I flash a JB rom say CM10 for example only a few of my contacts will transfer from my GMAIL account, I don't know if its because my contacts aren't all backing up to my GMAIL account(Don't know how to check or make sure its getting all the ones in my contacts book) or CM10 just ins't compatablie with it. I've also tried titanium backup and it just caused a ton of errors in CM10 to the point where I couldn't even text or open contacts. Can anyone help me either fully backup my contacts to my gmail or find another way to get them to transfer?? thanks :good:
While on stock, open messaging, menu/merge with google. I think that should move all of your phone/Sim contacts to google
