I need to do a total backup of my Desire, as I have the Android Market problem, and I have tried everyrthing and I mean everything trying to fix it without having to do a factory reset. So please dont give me tips on how to fix it.
What I do need information on is how I can totaly backup my desire, meaning
contacts
sms
google maps starred loactions
and all downloaded apps with their settign are backed up
I am aware that there are things on the Android market that I can download to backup different bits at a time, but I cant use Android Market app to download anything so I need to get apps that I can put on the desire from my pc.
Any ideas would be very helpful.
My desire is running Android 2.2 and has not been rooted or modded in any way.

Titanium backup is not necessary - after rooting just use Nandroid backup from recovery.
Is there a way of backing up app data without rooting?
i.e. I want to be able to back up Angry Birds data so if I factory reset I can reinstall all my scores

yea, the APK is on the SD, but the data is on the phone - don't want to lose that after the hours I spent getting 3 stars on a lot of it... any suggestions?

Titanium Backup is a more flexible solution.
I don't see how backing up the whole nandroid and restoring it would fix anything, the phone would be in the exact same state.
Nothing that doesn't involve rooting to save data?
No way to do that. The data is simply saved in a partition that normal users can't access. So root is actually necessary in this case. Pretty easy and harmless, especially since you can unroot if you want to.
I thought so - I also assume to restore backups you'd need to be rooted too - silly - you'd think that some way to backup app data would be fairly common (to non-rooted bog standard users)...

Actually, I wouldnt call it exactly harmless. Depends on how you've gone about rooting it and what precautions you've taken.
If you're a newbie, ensure the following before you root:
Make a goldcard-Absolutely essential if you have an SLCD Desire, since RUUs are dificult to find for unrooting, if you're branded
Ensure that an RUU for your country is available, or a generic one which is sure to work.

There are apps to backup certain things like SMS and Application Installations (without data), which can work without being rooted. If you want the restoration to mimic the previous state of that app with data, then you need to access the system as root.
I backed up using Titanium backup after using unrevoked to root my device.
I now have a problem doing a OTA update from T-mobile/HTC (update 2.12.110.4)
It downloads then asks me to install to which I cay yes, it reboots and just sits at a screen. when I press the power button its shows the clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.7
and says verfication signature failed and lets me reboot and doesnt install the update.
What is this?

OTA updates dont (usually) work after rooting. In most Rooted ROMs they wont download. In some they do, and wont update. OTA are like RUUs. They try to upgrade the factory version of the software and should be used only on non-rooted Desires. Anyway I dont see why you need them. In case you're rooted, the latest version of your custom ROMs would be better than OTAs..
How would I go back to the standard rom - is it by doing a factory reset?

If you mean you want to take your phone back to what it was when you first got it..This is called reverting to Stock
If you have rooted since you got the phone, and have not put on a custom ROM like Cyanogen, Aurax or LeeDroid, your phone is now basically Rooted Stock..In this case, if you just want to remove all the custom apps and data, you can do a factory reset..This does not remove the rooting. The app Superuser Manager will still be in your phone menu, and Recovery ROM-Clockworkmod/Amon Ra will still be on the phone. In brief, the rooting process is apparent to service engineers.
If you have put on a custom ROM like Cyanogen, Aurax or LeeDroid after rooting, if you just want to get your phone to the HTC look, you can flash a Stock based ROM-Froyo or Non Froyo (Just search for "Stock rooted ROM"). This will get you the HTC sense interface.
But if your purpose is to take phone back for warranty purpose and don't want them to know you've rooted it, you need to flash an RUU over your current setup. This will remove rooting process and get it back to factory setup.

So doing a factory reset wont remove the clockworkmod from my phone then?
How would I go about doing a RUU as I dont really need my phone rooted generally, and really only needed it for the Titanium backup?
Speaking of Titanium backup once I do the RUU I'm guessing I wont be able to restore my titanium backup bits, as I wont have root access anymore?

You just got your wish answered! Check out this thread. Apparently Titanium can be run in a Temporary Root mode, thus allowing us to restore items even after unrooting!
So doing a factory reset wont remove the clockworkmod from my phone then? No, it wont!

Hi,
My first post.
I recently rooted using unrEVOked 3, did a Nandroid backup right after.
I would like to unlock NAND, but want to go back to my Nandroid backup after I unlock NAND.
After unlocking NAND can I run a Nandroid restore and just use my original Nandroid backup that was rooted?

Yes you can BUT if you aren't currently using a rooted stock rom this is going to cause issues and the root wont have that much of an effect as you wont have superuser "app" to allow you to grant su permission.
What i suggest is downloading titanium back up and having it back up all your apps + data. it is free int he market for a basic version (the paid version is EXTREMELY worth it as it allows for auto install of apps without having to click the install and ok buttons along with a few other very nice features) once yuo have all your apps and data backed up do the full nand. Then either flash the stock rooted rom or a custom rom of your choice (lots of great choices out there we have amazing devs working with evo) and then re download titanium back up and have it install apps.
this should give you everything back how it was except you may have to reput out your widgets. Once you have everything back to where you want it (widgets all apps ok etc) on the rom you choose i would go ahead and make a new nand so that you have a fall back in the future.
Unrevoked 3 would have rooted the phone so there won't be any problem with performing a full root (I recommend simpleroot) and installing the NAND

but unrevoked doesnt install a rooted rom does it? with out a rooted rom, the market for example wont work along with a few other things. So if he is on THE stock rom and nandroids back while it will in fact work ... it will have issues functioning fully. until he upgrades to a rooted rom whether it be a stock rooted or a custom rom.
this is all not an issue obviously if he already has a rooted rom (ie stock rooted or custom) that he has flashed to the phone. then no issues nandroid away.
I'm about to finish this rooting process to put a custom rom on my brothers phone, but I want to be sure he won't lose all of his data if I do the ESPRIMG.zip update...I'm just trying to play it safe before he hates me for losing all his data
If anyone can verify this for me, I'd greatly appreciate it. I don't want to mess this up if I can avoid it.
Using the exploid method, I got to the part where you get the # in the adb shell, indicating root. However, titanium backup and such apps would not yet run, so I had to continue to make the root permanent with full access(or so I understand), and have now found myself at this step. If this zip only enables us to flash clockwork without wiping all the data on the phone, that would be awesome. I just want to make sure that is true...I haven't seen the answer anywhere else. Thanks for the help guys!
I wouldn't think anything would be wiped until you flash a new rom or do a wipe yourself... but don't quote me on that... I've only rooted 3 devices and the Slide was back in December, haha. D:
Which leads me to a kind of on-topic question... How do people back up their stuff the first time around if they're not rooted? I'm sure it's something simple. I just kinda made a list of the stuff I had.
If it's something extraordinarily obvious, I'm sorry it's 5AM anddd... I should probably know anyways. xD

This is what I'm wondering. I've rooted a G1, G2, and nook color before (although the NC is completely automated and required no work really, as there was nothing to back up the first time around). On the G1, it was my first device obviously and I lost all my data when wiping and flashing a custom rom. In the G2 process, I was able to get apps like Ti Backup to run on the stock rom, so I was able to back up all my apps and data.
On this one, it's a bit different (at least for now), I want to know if performing that update in the bootloader will put an entirely different image on my phone, meaning I'd lose all the data that's currently on there.
It's not so much the apps, but all the application data that I'm worried about losing without warning him first...I don't want him to have to repeat all his work to get to the same spot he's currently at in angry birds or something
Its going to wipe the phone. How to back up data? Idk.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I just did this myself, so take a noob's word for what it's worth.
Yes it will wipe the phone IF you tell it to do the update. If you want to back up your phone you first need to put ClockworkMod Recovery on your SD card and name it simply update.zip. When you load into the boot loader (Vol down + Power) select "Recovery" then something about "Apply from SD: Update.zip" and you will get into ClockworkMod Recovery where you can then do a Nandroid back up of your phone.

It completely wipes the phone. It REPLACES SPL, radio, recovery, rom, etc with the factory spec so the phone will be exactly as it was when first pulled out of the box.
Contacts, calendar, etc should be backed up to google. Apps can be downloaded again from the market and should be auto restored on sign-in to google.
Personal settings and data like texts, call logs, etc are gone though unless you use a program like Titanium Backup to save them.
The other thing you could do is root the stock rom, make a nandroid backup before flashing a custom rom and then if he wants to go back all he has to do is restore the nandroid backup and unroot with all his data preserved.
All right this is what i was suspecting. Is there any way to run titanium backup on the stock rom without wiping it first?

What do you mean? Titanium Backup requires root. You can use it in your custom rom to backup everything you want, then restore, reroot, then download titanium backup again and restore the data from your sdcard. If that doesn't answer your question please elaborate on what you are trying to accomplish so that I can help.
Where are you now? What steps did you take to get there? Where are you trying to get to and why?
EDIT - I've had an mt3g and an mt4g but never an espresso so i'm slightly out of my element. I reread the first post and it appears you have root but for whatever reason titanium isn't granted root access. Do you have superuser permissions installed? It can be installed from the market as long as you have root access.
Once you have clockwork (or amon ra) recovery installed you can make a nandroid backup of his stock rom without rooting it, but carrying all the data over to the new rom will require an app such as titanium or mybackup (free 30 day trial) from the market.
Hope that helps.
I guess it WILL then!
Yeah, this was the first device I rooted, so I just sorta flew through it. I was glad that it got rooted and I could put a rom on, so the loss of data wasn't TOO big to me.
And I've lost Angry Birds like... 4 times now, haha.

I am aware of all of that.
What I've done is use the exploid method to root until you get to the "#" prompt in the adb shell, after toggling wifi and running ./exploid twice. Then to continue in order to flash a custom rom, I've got to perform the update from the bootloader with ESPRIMG.zip. All I'm asking is that since I do have root through the exploid method, can I run Titanium Backup BEFORE I flash a custom rom, since technically it is possible to gain root access before flashing custom roms. I tried installing the app but it could not properly gain the access it needed. I think this probably has something to do with no superuser app being installed either.
Does it make sense what I'm asking? Thanks guys.

Yeah I think so. I'll take a look at the root guide but if you have # in Terminal then you should have root. Try installing superuser and see what happens. Do you have a custom recovery installed yet? I think you'll need that to install superuser.
Why didn't you just try SuperOneClick? Much easier than all this.

The # in terminal disappears as soon as I try to exit, and whatever work you've done resets upon a reboot.
I don't have clockwork installed as of yet, because the guide says I've got to update the ESPRIMG.zip through the bootloader before I can do that. I'll try flashing clockwork first and installing superuser before I do anything else.
Does a one click root exist for the slide? I thought that it wasn't possible at this time. If that's the case I'm interested as long as it allows me to run Ti Backup and such and flash clockwork with s-off to do some backups before I go ahead and flash cyanogenmod. Thanks.
EDIT: As expected, can't flash clockwork update without flashing the ESPRIMG.zip update. If I can't run Titanium, it'd be nice to get a couple files out of /data/data before doing the wipe. I tried an adb pull which would not work from the /data partition. With the # prompt in terminal, I wanted to copy some of these files, but the "cp" command doesn't seem to work in terminal, but "mv" and "rm" do. Any way to copy files from within the adb shell? If I could move them to the SD card it would be nice.

You know I'm not sure, I'd have to do more research. Will let you know when I figure it out.
I had an idea, and wanted to run it by all the fine people here on XDA before proceeding.
As everyone knows, there was a press release yesterday informing us that the Telus Samsung Galaxy S 2 (T989D) model will be getting the ICS update right away, probably within the next couple weeks.
Currently, I am on the Stock Telus Gingerbread ROM that came with my phone, however, it is rooted and I have installed CWM recovery as well.
From my understanding, when ICS becomes available to download via Telus, I won't be able to upgrade since I am rooted.
In order to download the update I would have to remove root and also flash the stock Telus recovery through ODIN. Only problem with that is, there doesn't seem to be a flashable stock Telus recovery available, just a T-Mobile recovery.
This is what I was thinking of doing.
1. Make a nandroid, backup all my apps and data through Titanium Backup and also backup all my SMS/MMS and Call Logs with SMS Backup +.
2. Put my phone into download mode and go into ODIN and flash the following stock Telus ROM through the PDA option. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350357 If everything goes well, I should have complete stock, no root and stock recovery.
3. Then I was going to use the ZergRush Exploit to re-root my phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582 this should just give me root access but I would still have the stock recovery.
4. Go to the Market and download Titanium Backup and restore all my apps with data. Also, restore all my SMS and call logs through SMS Backup +
5. Then I would want to remove Root so I can proceed with the update to ICS. I could either go into Root Explorer or ES File Explorer and navigate to the following:
/system/bin/ then delete SU.
/system/xbin and delete SU
finally go into /system/app/ and delete Superuser.apk.
An alternative method would be to use the ZergRush unrooting script found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18879974#post18879974 since I used ZergRush to Root originally.
If everything goes as planned I should now have my phone completely stock, no root, stock recovery and have all my apps back with data. Now, I know this seems like a long and tedious procedure, but would this technically work if I was to proceed?
I may just hold off on doing the update altogether and wait for one of the amazing Dev's to release their version of ICS. Although, I would like to experience the Stock ICS that Telus provides, since I really enjoy Telus Stock Gingerbread ROM (which is what I am currently running).
Thoughts, comments, they are all welcome. Thanks for listening.
99% of the time, there is a dev that provides the STOCK, rooted rom as a .zip. I could be wrong, but having gone through an HTC mt4g, sensation & still using the t989 & nexus, this is what goes on. However, you can just Odin back to stock & wait for the update as well...

Ya, that's what I was thinking as well. Hopefully our dev's can provide a complete stock but rooted ROM. The only stock rooted Telus ROM (for Gingerbread) that was available was slightly tweaked. Hopefully there will be one available that has no tweaks. Thank you for your response, much appreciated.

I was thinking about doing that, my concern is if I flash back to complete stock do I lose all my apps and data? I know I can re-download my apps again from the play store, but I would like to keep the data within those apps as well.
Or, when I flash back to complete stock are all my apps still in check because I wouldn't do a factory reset?

It will wipe all your apps and data. You can back that up via various apps like titanium and and a messaging backup, like backup to gmail or whatever you use.

Thank you. Yes, I know I can make the backups, and I would do that as well. But when you flash and go back to complete stock you lose root so I can't use titanium unless I re-route again.
that's why I was thinking about backing up first, flashing stock, then re-route with ZergRush (which won't touch the recovery). Reinstall all my apps with data and then remove root and wait for the update.
Logically to me this makes sense. I just don't know if technically it would work is all.

What I'm saying is keep running whatever rom your on. Then back everything up when the official ics drops. Flash back to stock, Take the update, then root it. But migrating data from different OS's is generally not gonna be a good route to take. So, I would just start over anyway.

Ok, got ya. That makes sense and is probably what I am going to do. The data that I have saved in games isn't an issue, I don't really care about that. The info that I don't want to lose is in an Expense Manager application. that's the main one I don't want to lose the data. The text messages and call logs I can get back without issue and I can backup my pics and videos of my kids either to my computer manually or use Samsung Kies. So that's not an issue either.
Another question, just out of curiosity. Lets say someone didn't root their phone and received the OTA update. How would updating to ICS affect the apps already installed on their phone?

You could backup your apps with an app that doesn't require root, such as my backup pro. That way you won't have an issue restoring after flashing back to stock.
Edit: never mind, still need root if you want to restore data.

Edit: never mind, still need root if you want to restore data.

No problem. I think the only way is to backup, then flash stock, re root and install apps, then remove root. Or wait for a dev to release a stock rooted ICS ROM.

5. Then I would want to remove Root so I can proceed with the update to ICS. I could either go into Root Explorer or ES File Explorer and navigate to the following:
/system/bin/ then delete SU.
/system/xbin and delete SU
finally go into /system/app/ and delete Superuser.apk.

I've never really felt the need to unroot, but similar to Chochiwpg, I'm interested in receiving the stock Jelly Bean as soon as it's available, but don't want to have to flash stock ICS (and lose my apps and data) in the meantime. Will this unroot method do the trick? After that I can flash the stock recovery and be good to go with Kies for the update?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hi. I backed up my phone using the backup method found here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/28296/full-backup-of-non-rooted-devices
This method uses CMD and creates an android backup file (.ab) I want to unlock my bootloader and add the custom clockwork recovery. Of course unlocking the bootloader wipes everything. So if i were to restore everything with the .ab file, then do the custom recovey with the superuser thing, would that give me root, and would all of my apps and data be restored as they are right now?
Probably a stupid question, but i want to be completely 100% sure i won't mess up my phone. I know its going to void warranty, which would be a problem if i dropped it of course
Thanks
It should work yes, you can also backup apps with an app called carbon. Free in the playstore.
Then unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and make a backup of the stock rom in there right away too (needed when you want to go back to full stock for future updates) its called a nandroid backup.
Then root it and restore, or install a brand new custom already rooted rom
Thanks a lot
If it was a custom rom i chose to install, will it still restore? or would it need to be the original stock for the restore to work properly?

Afaik know you can restore apps on any rom with carbon. Watch out with restoring system data, it can crash the rom.
Because some custom roms have more changes and if you restore system parts it will break the rom. But apps should not be a problem. The most important thing is that you do a nandroid backup of the stock rom. The rest is easy to setup new in the worst case.
Brilliant. Thanks for the help, much apreciated.
Was half expecting an answer like that, i think i will give root stock a go, then probably when HTC stop updating i will be very tempted to give a custom a go.
Cheers
I have unlocked the bootloader, i think i have flashed the recovery, downloaded nandroid and still says i need root, so i downloaded the superuser thing and when i try to install the binary thing it says there is an error. Anything i can do?
Update: I have learnt Its all good now.
Good mate ! Have fun with your rooted phone

Ok so I decided to root my VS985 G3. Mainly for better battery as of right now and to run some root apps. Running Lollipop 5.0.1. So far I have userSU and TitaniumBackup installed. I know the greatest thing with root is custom ROMs, but I'm not at that point yet. With just root here are some question I have as far as a noob with this goes.
1. Do I just do back ups with TI or do I still use the stock LG backup app?
2. In the event that I need to do a system restore. Do I need to uninstall root with userSU first then do a regular system restore with the power/vol down button or can I do it with the root still enabled?
3. Until I get comfortable being rooted and how things work I'm not going to do a custom ROM. However being a 25 yr exp computer tech tinkering is in my blood so I know at some point I will do it. With just root do I need to do a TWRP nandroid backup now or wait till I get ready for a custom ROM?
Thanks for helping guys! I am a IOS convert and am loving the Droid life.

1. Backup with Titanium Backup. It does a more thorough job
2. I dont get your question. Under what circumstance do you want to do a system restore? If you make a system backup while rooted when you restore the backup you will still be rooted?
3. You only make a backup of your system using TWRP or Nandroid Backup if you are going to be playing around with the system folder or if you are install custom rom
Oh yeah and by the way once you root they will know that you rooted your phone regardless of whether supersu is present on the phone. They do this by looking at the LG RCT menu in service settings
So annoying that warranty is void when rooting. Oh well, if I have an issue down the road, hopefully my carrier doesn't look at that menu.
(though, aside from an issue with the internal storage on a Galaxy S i9000m, I've never had to send in a phone for warranty)

Actually, removing root and bringing the device to original state is as easy as flashing an official rom. No traces of root left.

My question there was looking at "IF" I wanted to do a system restore would I need to unroot first or restore as normal then re root. Thinking I loose root when I do a factory restore. Just didn't know if I needed to unroot or not before doing the restore. With my VS985 it will have a few kninks every now and then that doing a restore seems to help fix. Maybe a hardware defect, but nothing that I would send back for a replacement for. Some of those kinks maybe verizon problems too, but restore seems to fix them for a time for me.

If what you mean "restore" is to wipe Data/Cache/Dalvik, then you don't need to unroot. After the wipe, you will lose all your installed app, but you start with a clean slate. The root is still there, and you can install SuperSU to get access to it.
To install a custom ROM, you need to install TWRP first. However, you cannot do it from L. You need to first downgrade it back to 10b using the TOT flash. Stomp root it and install TWRP manager from Play store. From TWRP manager you can install TWRP to your VS985. After that, you can flash custom ROM from TWRP.
