[Q] Radio Subsystem Issues??? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have recently noticed that one of my Evo's was draining the battery a lot faster than what I would consider normal. I started using power tutor to see where the power was being used up and it turns out that the "Radio Subsystem" was at the top of the list with like 30% or so. I ran the same type of test on my other Evo and it was no where near that. Can someone with knowledge please give me an idea on what is happening? I am running Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 3 on both with King #9. All other settings have been set up the same. The only difference that I have noticed is that the newer phone is on hardware version 0004 and that is the one with the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

According to Sprint revision 0004 phones have slightly different hardware, namely a different camera. It is possible that the radio received a tweak as well. Try flashing the stock kernel from the 3.30 software version to see if this fixes the issue.

Thank you very much for the information. I actually downloaded the HTC #10 kernel last night with that in mind, but figured I would ask around and see what was brought up. I thank you for your reply and advice. I am going to flash the stock kernel tonight and post a follow up in a few days.

Is there a way to identify the camera chip?

I have a rooted EVO with Hardware Version 003 and was curious to know if there was a way to identify the camera chip in my phone (as I just found out that some of the 003 versions have the same chip that is in the 004 and therefore would benefit from the 3.30 OTA)
Thanks in advance..
What's the difference between the new camera chip and the old one?
Sure there is, just take your phone apart. Or you could try one of the older ROMs and see if the camera still works.
I was told if you are able to run a custom Kernel and your camera still functions properly you have the old chip. Don't know if this is true being that I got a 0003 Evo days before they rolled out the 0004's, so I would think I have the new chip but all old roms and custom kernels work fine for me. I'd also like to know what the improvements are regarding the new chip cuz my camera is ****...

Yes it is true. I have a 0004 version phone and my kernal only works with Myns rom with the #17 kernal. I have tried every other kernal and its a no go. Only a black screen.

In what ways is it better? If it is "better" at all?

Sounds like a downfall. Wanna trade? haha
I've heard that one camera isn't "better" than the other but rather, HTC had to go to a different parts supplier.
If anyone knows any different, please add.

If HTC swapped chips with out upgrading, they really have their head up their @ss. IMO that's the Evo's only downfall, the camera with my a500 killed the Evo cam I think my i880 did too.
I have 2 EVO's, one with the new chip and one ithe the old chip and 3.29 software. Bought them the same time. There is a huge difference. The new chip focuses quick even in low light. Almost impossible to to get a blury pix, even if moving while pressing the shutter. Tried with Barcode software. On small barcodes the new chip grabs the code and on the old chip you screw arround forever. Also the color accuracy is almost perfect on the new chip. On the old one it appears to accent blues. HTC is trying to cover it up and claims there is no difference in cameras or software, only a different vender for 2 months and now they are back to the origional camera. That sounds like a crock to me.

[Q] A couple of newbie Evo questions (Sorry!)

I bought an Evo yesterday and when I did I did not expect there to be so much dev support for it (seriously, I'm coming from a G2 and a MyTouch Slide on T-Mobile, your development section is overwhelming!). Don't get me wrong, I'm a happy guy, but I've been reading that there's differences between "old" evos and "new" evos and I don't want to screw anything up my second day owning this amazing phone.
So, here's me questions.
1. Is there a best root method? I see some that require adb, which I can use if I have to and the unrevoked method which seems a whole lot more simple.
2. What is the best rom/kernal combos for performance and battery life? I know, people like what they like and this will be all opinion, so I don't expect there to be one big answer.
Thanks for any help. This phone is ridiculously awesome and I can't wait to play more with it.

Unrevoked is going to be easier and less involved then adb if you don't feel comfortable.
2. What is the best rom/kernal combos for performance and battery life? I know, people like what they like and this will be all opinion, so I don't expect there to be one big answer.
I am a fan of AOSP roms as they don't contain as much 'bloat' and i experience better battery life. That being said there are a few sense roms that I had an awesome experience with the most recent being Frost ROM

I gave my opinions in bold above.
It will help others if you give them the hardware version you are running as well

I saw someone saying Frost ROM was pretty good in another thread, that with CM, MIUI and Myn are the 4 roms I'm going to try first. I'm more concerned with kernals/radios that play nicely with them, though. I've gotten 8 hours out of my battery so far (unplugged at 11am, it's 7:18pm here and my battery is at 46%) so I think that with a good ROM/kernal/radio/etc combo I won't have to spend money on a larger battery.
Hardware version
0004
(and while I'm screwing around)
radio
2.15.00.11.19
what's the difference between hardware versions? is it the same hardware, just manufactured more recently or are there tangible updates?
Also, you say unrevoked is the best way to root, but the guide in the general section says I can't use it with hboot 2.04 or 2.10...well I have 2.10.0001 so I guess it's adb for me lol.
Some late hardware 3 and hardware 4 have a different camera chip. I believe this is the only difference.
So that makes some kernals not play nice but most recent ones have wrapped up that wailing issue
Swyped from a galaxy far far away......

So before I root, I should find a kernal and ROM that work well with 4 hardware? Shouldn't be too hard, right? lol.
You can root whenever you want, and you can switch ROMs all you want (you just have to setup your phone again every time). You can even try different kernels whenever, but you really need to run them for a few days to get a feel for how they work.
I personally use VaelPak because it's Sense-compatible but has all the Sense stuff stripped out, and it's really fast and smooth. I've had zero problems with it. I used to use KingX's kernel (#11 BFS mostly) and it gave me fantastic battery life, but I also lucked out and got a phone that has always had good battery life even out of the box. It could also be partly my usage habits, and yours will make a difference for you as well. I just switched to Netarchy's 4.1.9.1 with SBC because it was recommended with the new version of VaelPak, but I'm not so sure I want the SBC thing. The whole trickle charging issue is still a bit fuzzy, and exploding phones aren't my cup of tea.
You're going to get all sorts of recommendations for ROMs and kernels, because it's really different for everybody. Sometimes one phone will behave differently than another even with the same ROM and kernel. Sometimes even the same hardware version. Just try some out.
Maybe a dichotomous key would help: Do you like/want Sense? If yes, focus on Myn's, MikFroyo, Fresh, or the other current and actively-developed Sense ROMs. If no, check out VaelPak or, if you want an actual AOSP experience, CM6 or Evervolv. And so forth.
As for kernels, find a ROM you like and then browse through the threads to see what people are liking for that ROM. If you don't like one, try another one until you do. Battery life takes a while to really gauge, especially if you don't wipe your battery stats and recalibrate every once in a while.
As far as I know all of that is generally accurate. And one more thing: ALWAYS HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP!!! Safety first.

[Q] Evo hardware question. Please and thank you

I had a couple HW:004 and now I have a HW:003.
Really, what are the differences?? And should I go through the process of unrooting and exchanging for an 004 and rooting again?
The main difference is how the camera was set up, that's about it really. Some people say the screen is just a little different as well.
What do you mean by 'set up'? Is it hardware, software? Is the 004 camera technically different or better than the other 003 version?
Thanks a lot!!
I believe it is software, but its still 8MP 720p HD recording, just differently integrated into the phone. Its still the same, just different, if you know what I mean.
Lol
welp doesn't seem like it's worth the unroot, exchange, re-root process.

I've been reading about the 003 hw version and the kernels for it. That there are more options and better flashable kernels. Would you by chance have a link or know the location of these kernels?
My preference is a kernel with an overclock(maybe an undervolt) without the need for an overclock app, for the stock 3.70.
Thank you!!
http://mirror.munkibizness.com/ <- A link to the savaged zen kernels
anything with HAVS basically has a setcpu installed inside, SBC offers full bettery charge.
There ya go

Who has Hardware 0002?

Who has EVO4G hardware version 0002 and what ROM's seem to run the best? I am currently using Kings Unleashed Ultra Blakk R3, but the battery just doesn't seem to last very long. Any info is appreciated!
I had an 002 until 2 weeks ago, but I don't see why the hardware version is important. Try different kernel combos. Also, people have stated that using the newer 1.90 PRI drains the battery faster. Try experimenting with the 1.77 PRI and different kernels until you find something that improves the battery life. I'm very happy with my set up. Currently I'm running Netarchy's 4.3.4-cfs-nohavs-suv-nosbc and I'm happy with it.
I do, release day EVO. I'm running CM7 RC4 with great life, turned the phone off at 49% after 9 hours last night on stock battery.
Ok I thought I had read somewhere on another forum that different hardwares are an issue. Thanks!

How do you like CM7, I hear a lot of different things about it. Some people say it has a lot of quirks? What kernel do you run with it?

It would be news to me as to my knowledge, the only difference in the 004 models is the camera hardware. If you do have the link, post it up. I'm curious.

He's right and wrong, in the past the camera issue caused certain kernels to break the camera use on 004 this is not the case anymore, run whatever "newer" kernel you'd like, good luck

Battery life issues! Possible kernel and wake lock?

Ok so im not new to rooting as I have owned a Hero and an Evo 4g for some time. But now I am running an epic 4g and I am having terrible battery life throughout daily use.
I am running the leak of the stock build EF02 and the light tweaks that were in the forums such as ram booster. After checking my phones up time it says it is 14 hours. Which means that it has not slept and clocked down sine last night when I put it on a charger. This is obviously a kernel and/or radio issue. But the problems is I need to know what radio to flash to fix this. There was a very similar issue with the Evo when it ran an incomplete gingerbread kernel: Flashing a new radio fixed it.
Can anyone give me some info and input on this subject because I think if Im getting this problem then there are a lot of others who have it as well.
Thanks
