I bought an Evo yesterday and when I did I did not expect there to be so much dev support for it (seriously, I'm coming from a G2 and a MyTouch Slide on T-Mobile, your development section is overwhelming!). Don't get me wrong, I'm a happy guy, but I've been reading that there's differences between "old" evos and "new" evos and I don't want to screw anything up my second day owning this amazing phone.
So, here's me questions.
1. Is there a best root method? I see some that require adb, which I can use if I have to and the unrevoked method which seems a whole lot more simple.
2. What is the best rom/kernal combos for performance and battery life? I know, people like what they like and this will be all opinion, so I don't expect there to be one big answer.
Thanks for any help. This phone is ridiculously awesome and I can't wait to play more with it.

Unrevoked is going to be easier and less involved then adb if you don't feel comfortable.

I am a fan of AOSP roms as they don't contain as much 'bloat' and i experience better battery life. That being said there are a few sense roms that I had an awesome experience with the most recent being Frost ROM

I gave my opinions in bold above.
It will help others if you give them the hardware version you are running as well

I saw someone saying Frost ROM was pretty good in another thread, that with CM, MIUI and Myn are the 4 roms I'm going to try first. I'm more concerned with kernals/radios that play nicely with them, though. I've gotten 8 hours out of my battery so far (unplugged at 11am, it's 7:18pm here and my battery is at 46%) so I think that with a good ROM/kernal/radio/etc combo I won't have to spend money on a larger battery.
Hardware version
0004
(and while I'm screwing around)
radio
2.15.00.11.19
what's the difference between hardware versions? is it the same hardware, just manufactured more recently or are there tangible updates?
Also, you say unrevoked is the best way to root, but the guide in the general section says I can't use it with hboot 2.04 or 2.10...well I have 2.10.0001 so I guess it's adb for me lol.
Some late hardware 3 and hardware 4 have a different camera chip. I believe this is the only difference.
So that makes some kernals not play nice but most recent ones have wrapped up that wailing issue
Swyped from a galaxy far far away......

So before I root, I should find a kernal and ROM that work well with 4 hardware? Shouldn't be too hard, right? lol.
You can root whenever you want, and you can switch ROMs all you want (you just have to setup your phone again every time). You can even try different kernels whenever, but you really need to run them for a few days to get a feel for how they work.
I personally use VaelPak because it's Sense-compatible but has all the Sense stuff stripped out, and it's really fast and smooth. I've had zero problems with it. I used to use KingX's kernel (#11 BFS mostly) and it gave me fantastic battery life, but I also lucked out and got a phone that has always had good battery life even out of the box. It could also be partly my usage habits, and yours will make a difference for you as well. I just switched to Netarchy's 4.1.9.1 with SBC because it was recommended with the new version of VaelPak, but I'm not so sure I want the SBC thing. The whole trickle charging issue is still a bit fuzzy, and exploding phones aren't my cup of tea.
You're going to get all sorts of recommendations for ROMs and kernels, because it's really different for everybody. Sometimes one phone will behave differently than another even with the same ROM and kernel. Sometimes even the same hardware version. Just try some out.
Maybe a dichotomous key would help: Do you like/want Sense? If yes, focus on Myn's, MikFroyo, Fresh, or the other current and actively-developed Sense ROMs. If no, check out VaelPak or, if you want an actual AOSP experience, CM6 or Evervolv. And so forth.
As for kernels, find a ROM you like and then browse through the threads to see what people are liking for that ROM. If you don't like one, try another one until you do. Battery life takes a while to really gauge, especially if you don't wipe your battery stats and recalibrate every once in a while.
As far as I know all of that is generally accurate. And one more thing: ALWAYS HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP!!! Safety first.

I have been using 2.2 for a while, and I want to back to a rooted Sense version of 2.1. Any ideas which is best and where to find it? (I tried the development section's list of roms, but could not sort out which are 2.1, which have Sense, etc. Thanks!
Look for Damage Control 3.2.3. Very fast and stable 2.1 rom.

Seconded. I can't think of any advantage.
Thanks, I will try the Damage one.
I was getting 3x the battery life with 2.1 running the exact same apps I do now. Strange but true.
Anyway I see little real world advantage to 2.2. I know 2.2 is supposed to be faster, better video, yada yada yada, but it feels about the same to me. I am not talking about benchmark test scores, I am talking actual use ;-)

ummm WHAT lol good luck with 2.1 its going to get hard locating rom's i think flipz is still supporting 2.1
but i have to say im getting better batt life with 2.2 than i did with 2.1 ( not much but better )
have you tried the newer baked snack 2.2 roms? i get very similar battery life as i did back on 2.1. i know the developer kinda left xda but you can still download the latest public release.

I have to agree bakedsnacks 2.2 are great. Battery life's crazy

what all have you tried on battery life? have you run thrugh all the battery threads are you using set cpu etc? have you tried a diffrent rom? if you are getting 3x less battery life something is very wrong.
I have actually gone back to my Hero! I much prefer the small size, and I like the trackball vs. the directional keys. Also battery life is way better, and.my Hero does not lag at all. Now, what to do with my Evo...

i second this.
Permaban requested for ronnie...
That was actually short lived, as the Hero developed an issue with the charging port, so Evo it is.
The only thing I liked more about 2.1 is the battery life (much longer in my experience.) Otherwise on a day-to-day basis, there is not much difference for me. I do not tinker with it endlessly and do bench mark tests, etc. I use phone, email, a lot of web, a handful of apps, etc. and for these purposes 2.2 and 2.1 are very similar IMO.
I am trying Baked Snack and DC 3.2.3 on the Evo today...thanks all.
I recently ventured into flashing my evo and it was quite easy to root, and return to stock. thank you guys for all of the information posted or else i wouldnt have been able to do it..
My questions are about roms.. Which Rom is the best to use for performance and battery conservation..
So far I love HTC sense, but i'd like more battery and less lag out of it.
Rom's I have tried are:
Cynagen 6
Fresh 3.5
and another i can't remember the name but it was based off of android 2.1
All of these roms ATE my battery.. within an hour-hour and a half I was down to nothing, and It sat in my pocket the whole time, after running quadrant.
I did however notice, my phone would never go to sleep on either rom, not sure if i messed up with rooting it or not.
Any suggestions on what rom to use? I don't want to wait two years for the new sense ui and am curious about gingerbread.
The rom im looking into as of now is CM7-EX.v9, Mixed replies for problems/no problems in that thread though.
As i have said I am new to this, new to linux, etc.. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. thank you and thanks or all of the great things on this forum.
Personally I'm using a customized version of MikFroyo 4.4. I'd have to say what he's done to speed up the system is amazing. A lot of tedious work. I turn it into a "senseless" version and remove an ishload of other apps and use ADW Launcher EX. All in all, it's the best ROM I've used. Battery life is pretty decent as well.
If you like sense then try myn's rls 5
As for roms, what do you need to have and what can you do without? AOSP roms still don't have full functionality but do have really sweet custom things added in that could make up for it.
As for speed, I have compared CM6.1 to the Sense rom I am using now and the Sense one is faster/smoother. It has Mikfroyo 4.4 as the base but is even faster than that one. Battery life is OK.
However, if you are not even getting 2hrs out of your battery then something is wrong. You need to investigate or change some settings because no matter what combo you are using should get at least half a day out of it.
1) Make sure you wipe everything before you flash (I'd recommend Calkulin's format all zip)
2) Let ROMs and their respective kernels "settle into your phone." This usually takes 2-3 days.
3) Pick ROMs that don't emphasize speed/power (CM) as much and more on user experience (Myn's)
4) Check my sig if none of these help (however they should )
You may also want to check and see if you are on the newest pri 1.90 if so you can try flashing back to pri1.77 this has helped some people with the 100% wake issue. Then I would suggest another kernel possibly. Good luck.
Oh and +1 for mikfroyo!
mikfroyo seems to be the way to go... someone told me that the battery life would be junk for a few days but i wasn't sure.. i was more worried about the awake time and the up time being the same, meaning something was keeping my battery on.
I like the sense, in fact i'd love to try the new sense for the htc desire on it to see how it is.. looks amazing.
bloatware and what not i can do without
i dont have 4g in my area
i'd like to have both cameras working(i use them alot with my daughter)
mostly its a weather/texting machine.. sound like i got the wrong phone lol.. but i love the advantages of it.

i really like KINGSrom Ultra v5.0 also get the 4.3.2 the nosbc, nohavs, nouv version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763
Who has EVO4G hardware version 0002 and what ROM's seem to run the best? I am currently using Kings Unleashed Ultra Blakk R3, but the battery just doesn't seem to last very long. Any info is appreciated!
I had an 002 until 2 weeks ago, but I don't see why the hardware version is important. Try different kernel combos. Also, people have stated that using the newer 1.90 PRI drains the battery faster. Try experimenting with the 1.77 PRI and different kernels until you find something that improves the battery life. I'm very happy with my set up. Currently I'm running Netarchy's 4.3.4-cfs-nohavs-suv-nosbc and I'm happy with it.
I do, release day EVO. I'm running CM7 RC4 with great life, turned the phone off at 49% after 9 hours last night on stock battery.
Ok I thought I had read somewhere on another forum that different hardwares are an issue. Thanks!

How do you like CM7, I hear a lot of different things about it. Some people say it has a lot of quirks? What kernel do you run with it?

It would be news to me as to my knowledge, the only difference in the 004 models is the camera hardware. If you do have the link, post it up. I'm curious.

He's right and wrong, in the past the camera issue caused certain kernels to break the camera use on 004 this is not the case anymore, run whatever "newer" kernel you'd like, good luck
I realize the advice is to try these out for myself to see which is better for ME, but I was just wondering if I could get some input on other's experiences for BEST BATTERY LIFE and performance/stability on sense roms. In fact mine is just the stock sense rom and I've just been switching our kernels to test them out, and so far, these 2 have been teh front runners for me and I can't seem to decide which to use.
I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm an og droid owner but just picked up a Dinc for my fiance so I'm fairly new to anything related to the Dinc. I've been reading like crazy trying to figure out which kernel to go with. Her battery life is horrendous so I'm hoping a different kernel will help. I rooted her phone last night but she wants me to keep it stock.
My question is: which kernels work with a stock Dinc? Are the two you mention here, okay to flash onto a stock Dinc? Also, doesn't Lou #8 leave out multi-touch?
FWIW, Chad's Incredikernal has been the best one for me. A LOT of people like Lou's though, so it really is dependent upon YOUR phone. If you can't tell the difference, then it really doesn't matter.
Sbenson, try loading up SetCPU and underclock the phone a little. Also, you can set up profiles to reduce usage when screen is off, etc. Yes, both of those should work okay on a stock DI - actually most will work okay as long as the kernal is specifically for a Sense ROM.
Good luck!
I'm an og droid user but just picked up a Dinc for my fiance. She loves the thing but hates the 10 hour (9 hours of that is idle?) battery life.
Last night, I went ahead and rooted it and removed most of the verizon crap-ware and then adjusted her sync settings to hopefully improve her battery life. I also did a battery stat reset.
She loves it as-is so flashing roms is out of the question. I don't have time/she doesn't have the patience for me to flash roms and fix problems that arise. With that being said I would like to explore the other back-end options.
Now, keeping in mind, this dinc is completely stock. Stock sense, stock kernel, stock radio, etc. I've been advised to replace the stock radio with one from Doug Piston. I was told to install the 04.08 version for the EVO. I just want to clarify that this will work for the Dinc running stock froyo sense? Also, if someone could tell me exactly what this does? Is the main benefit better battery life? Or something else? Also, if this is not the correct radio I should install, which is?
My second question is in regard to a better kernel. As stated above, I am stock and will remain on stock sense. What are some good proven kernels that will work on stock sense. Performance on the device is fine, so I'm not worried about that. I'm only looking for a kernel that will boost battery life. I looked around here but I couldn't determine which of these, if any would work on a stock Dinc or if they were just for custom roms?
Anyway, that's all. Thanks in advance for any help on this!
Here is a link to all the different kernels that are available for the Inc. It will say if it works with AOSP or Sense. Just take a look through them and see which one would work the best for what you want. Some will overclock, some will underclock, etc
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866736
Whoops didn't notice you had that link already. Some popular ones are incredikernel and heyitslou. I know with incredikernel I was getting good battery life but also was with different ROM not sense.
I have installed a radio on my Inc, been quite fine for the last few weeks as well. From my understanding, the radio may or may not improve gps lock and/or your phone's signal strength depending. This is hit or miss, not everyone notices a stark improvement in both or either category. As such, if you already have poor signal in your area it may not improve your signal therefore it has no effect on battery life.
Someone more knowledgeable in that area please correct me.
You can try whichever radio you desire, I recall many people using 4/08 or the 11/19. Personal preferences aside, your improved battery life depends on how much signal your phone reports that it is receiving.
I have used the heyitslou kernels and have loved the battery life I got with it. I have also upgraded my battery to the 3500mA battery. This did wonders
incredikernel w/ smartass + CM7 and never look back...i know you like the ROM but i think stock sense is what drains the battery the most.
I've had good luck with Lou's kernel running a sense rom.
may want to try Virtuous v3.2.0 its a good stock rom with some clean-up done.
