so over the past week or so whenever I'm talking to someone the Mic seems to randomly become muted. its only fixed by hanging up and redialing. It's not the mute button being hit because it still happens even while I use my Bluetooth headset.
Any ideas what could be causing it? I've rooted my phone but haven't done much besides install a custom recovery. I went trough and installed all the apps that I don't really use and had odd rights on the phone for what they did but I don't know if that solved it yet.

i've tried searching this forum with no luck for results, so maybe someone can point me in the right direction...
just wondering if there is a fix for this issue, that apparently is a bug:
when receiving an incoming call, and while the phone ringer is turned on, it will ring for a split second then it will stop ringing. the call will still be coming through and i can answer it and talk just fine, it's just the ringer that is the problem. this happens randomly, and i've found numerous posts on other forums by searching google, but haven't been able to find anything here.
can't post a url so here's some quotes:
My Dinc sometimes stops ringing after half a second with incoming calls. I'd hear a very short ring and then it just stops ringing or vibrating. I just noticed this today after missing several calls with my phone today.
This problems comes on randomly and goes away in a similar fashion. This seems to happen only when the phone is lying screen down on a flat surface. I called HTC and they said it might be due to the sensor in the front and advised me to not put phone face down and always carry it in a pouch. This is not an acceptable solution. I carry my phone in my pocket and it can very well be face down in there.
Has anyone noticed this problem? If not, I invite you to reproduce this problem. Put your phone screen down on a perfectly flat surface and try to call your cell. I'm wondering whether my phone is defective or it's a much wider issue.
Thanks.
Update: Apparently there is a feature on HTC devices when if you're holding the phone and if it rings, it will mute if you put it on a surface face down. While this is fine, the problem with my device is that if I leave it on a flat surface, it will do that for all subsequent calls too (ring for half a second and then mute). Maybe my phone has a bug in implementation of this 'feature'?

It's a well known issue that HTC has not fixed and will most likely never fix. I've been through 3 Dincs because of this problem and they all do the same thing. Quite irritating! Nice phone except for this BIG bug.

is there any fix for this bug? and does anyone know if this bug is software or hardware related. currently, i'm running stock 2.2 rooted with city id deleted. thinking about flashing CM7 or another custom rom, and just curious if it will do this with those roms as well.
thanks for any help
Must be an issue with the stock rom. I've never had a problem. But I've also never ran the stock 2.2 rom. I ran stock 2.1 until root was achieved. Custom Rom's from there on out.

Also on my HTC Wildfire
This happens also on my htc wildfire android v2.2.1 (latest official rom), i think it is caused by the mute-on-pickup feature that is bugged in some way, even if i have turned it off.
I've been using this phone for over a year w/o any problem but lately, since I last update some apps (and only apps, no android vers upgrade) my speaker phone seems to be glitchy. During calls, the speaker phone always turn on all by itself as if it was set on by default.
Is there anyway I can make the speaker phone to be the way it used to be? As in only turn on only when I tap the icon? Because I can't find any setting at all that deals with this.
A further info, there seems to be a glitch that the car panel apps also turn on by itself twice even without ever using any dock at all. Might it be if in car panel mode, the speaker phone was defaulted to on? FYI, I've never even used the car panel apps before, therfore it's strange that it does turn on out of a sleep/lock screen. I've turn off the auto launch so it never turn on again, but the speaker phone prob still persist.
Android ver 2.3.3 Sense 2.1 no rooting.
If the only solution is to hardreset, anyone know how I can save all my apps state so I can restore later? Installing the apps all over again seems to be a major headache.
Had that issue on my inspire, when ever i answer a call it would automaticaly go to speaker but i was rooted and on a custom rom. I unchecked quite ring on pickup , pocket mode, flip for speaker, and havent had the issue ever since
I've just try that, but sadly no, it's still doesn't fix it.
The only time it didn't turn on speaker phone was if I use ear phone.
I'll try to get 2.3.5 update and see if it help for now. But currently, the update still have't available yet.
i have been having issues with no sound coming from the LG nitro , all of a sudden it cut out yesterday and have hard reset numerous times and 1 out of 4 or 5 reboots the sound comes in but if you power off then on the sound disappears .. this is a stock phone with only root , anybody have any ideas or similiar issues ?
This is not any kind of development related topic but I'd suggest that you bring it in for repair or replacement as that sounds like a hardware issue. Maybe try flashing another rom.

I had a similar issue and ended up returning the phone to bell for a new one.
Here is the long story just in case it helps some one. Like all good Android users I started by rooting my phone, installing ROM Manager and making a nandroid backup. Once this was done I ran rooted stock for a few days. All was well.
Then I started to debloat my phone. After which everything seamed good. Then installed and played with RAM Manager and SD Speed Increase. TBH i did not notice any particular increase in speed on my phone but that might be due to the following issue.
After all this I decided to run a few test by using the phone into the ground. Added a bluetooth headset, while using navigation and making several calls. It was all running very well until I rebooted. Once rebooted whenever I connect my bluetooth headset I was no longer able to make calls. The phone dialer would completely lag out until I de-activated bluetooth. The the 10 or so test calls I tried making would all go through at once. This wasn't the end of the word for me so I continued to use the phone as everything else was working fine. The things started degrading by which time I was on the new CM9 nightly build. The phone had started being really sluggish. I finally decided to return my phone after it would no longer play any sound and whenever it called to any sound related function would lag out and/or reboot. The same behavior happen in stock, cm9 and NO! NO! ROMs. I tried flashing a few roms in a last ditch effort.
I could be wrong by my conclusion is that the audio portion of the snapdargon chip fried and since these phone are basically just 1 chip the phone simply degraded from there.
I would like to know of anyone else has had similar issue or if I just got a lemon and also your take on the cause of the issue.
Hope this can help someone.
Thanks!
Edit: Returned my phone for a new one and I've been flashing CM9 since the first release and no issues. I'm actually really happy with the replacement and would recommend the phone as long as you don't get a lemon ;-)
Hello,
First I apologize for opening a new thread instead of posting in the CM11 thread, but till now I don't have write privileges there.
I recently unlocked and permrooted my Desire HD then installed Mustaavalkosta's CM11, but as a newbie, I have some issues I require assistance with. To note that I did an extensive reading before I did any rooting and installing a new rom.
1- I find myself not hearing anything during calls. It's sort of like my internal speaker got muted somehow after installing CM11. I tried multiple apps to no avail. I read somewhere that if u fail to flash the boot.img in the rom u might get this issue, but thing is I did flash the boot.img after I installed the rom and the recovery and wiped the cache. I can hear the calls with the external speaker turned on and with the headphone, so I think it's not a hardware issue but a software one. Any fix to this?
2- After each restart, the UI somehow resets itself. I mean many of the settings and widgets I use either get reset or vanish like the sleep option in seetings for example (I put the screen to turn off after a 1 min and it resets to 15 sec after each reboot which is annoying as hell). Also, many apps like Dolphin and GoSMSPro shortcuts vanish from the home screen after each reboot, while whatsapp for example doesn't. I'm not able to figure why some app shortcuts vanish while others don't.
3- I tried to use ART instead of dalvik, but yet again after each reboot, dalvik is back. So effectively, I can't benefit from ART.
4- other minor bugs which I will not mention for now till I solve the 3 main ones.
If someone can provide some assistance (mainly for the first issue which is the major one), I will be very grateful. It's becoming increasingly annoying and embarrassing to turn the speaker on every time I receive a call, bc most of the times I am in a room with other individuals or in a meeting, and I am forced to have them hear the conversations bc not always I can excuse myself.
No one has any input on this?
After wiping data, dalvik cache, android secure, etc... and reinstalling the stock rooted 2.3.5 Rom, I still had the same internal speaker issue on calls. The heaphone icon was on even though there were no headphones plugged. I installed 2 widgets (togggleheadset 2 and headphone fix) and the issue was fixed. To note I had this problem back on my unrooted stock Desire HD before I rooted it and upgraded to CM11 BR3 thinking the new rom will fix this problem.
So after I made the calls work on Gingerbread stock rooted rom, I did a clean wipe once more and installed CM11 BR4. The problem reemerged. And the 2 widgets couldn't be redownloaded bc they are not compatible with kitkat. The other issues mentioned in the OP disappeared, only the incall volume issue remained.
I need to mention that many Desire HD owners have had this problem on their Froyo and Gingerbread stock builds, and usually the 2 widgets I mentioned above helped fix the issue. On 4.4.2, it seems some android users have complained of in-speaker audio volume being very low, so maybe this worsens the issue I had instead of fixing it.
I'm leaning to think that it's mostly a software/code issue, otherwise why would the widgets fix the problem on an earlier version if it's hardware related? hence, there could be a workaround for it on Kitkat if someone knowledgeable cares to look at it. Maybe the code turns off the internal speaker or lowers the volume so much it becomes unhearable. The headphone and external speaker are just fine, I can hear the other person in the call without any problem. It's when I rely on the internal speaker that I hear nothing.
Hope someone can offer some assistance here.
Hello. Does anybody have an idea why there is no sound whenever I send/receive calls? Also, the UI/related app crashes whenever I do the same.
No problems when I uses SMS though, so I don't think it's a signal problem.

Maybe a theme issue?
Nope. Just reformatted the phone and did not install any theme/launcher apps
Same issue
I've been having the same issue and I have no idea why. Performed a factory reset. Tried running the phone in safe mode. It seems like it works briefly after a restart but then cuts out after a few minutes. I never had any issues like this before the update.
Problem for me goes as follows.
Receive phone call
Try to answer
Either the phone answers the call and there is no sound (mic or speaker) but otherwise acts normal or the phone refuses to answer the call and the "swipe up to answer" UI keeps reappearing. When the later happens the phone crashes and goes through a restart that takes longer than a normal one.
Make a phone call
No sound (mic or speaker)
The issues with the microphone seems to affect other parts of the system as well, such as ok Google and voice typing.
Speaker seems to work fine other wise
Putting the phone in safe mode seems to delay the problem sometimes.

Me too. Bumping in hopes of a fix.
Same. I'm running a custom ROM and haven't upgraded to 8.0 yet. Does the issue persist with 8.0? Google told me today to revert to stock and upgrade to see if that fixes it.

Same thing started happening for me yesterday!
I was sending a voice message on Whatsapp.
The msg was sent but no audio was recorder.
I received a call but there was no audio (both in & out)
I tried making a call and the same happened.
The "Phone" app would even hang after hangup and would crash. I get a white screen with the G logo and a loading bar beneath it, then it would start.
Starting the phone app is also sluggish.
If I make a call (and get no audio) I try to switch to loudspeaker and I could hear the other party but for a couple seconds then it's muted, then comes back for a couple seconds, and keeps doing it intermittently.
Sound from music app and videos works fine.
SOMETIMES after a reboot phone audio&mic would return but temporarely.
SOMETIMES when I try rebooting and it doesn't work, I try safe mode and it work (not all the time though)
SOMETIMES switching from LTE to WCDMA only fixes it temporarly.
This is really unpredictable.
I reverted back to a 7.1.2 stock. At first the issue persisted then it was fixed for a couple hours.
I updated back to O and audio worked for some time but after a few minutes, the issue returned.
Now I am on a clean stock install of O. without any apps installed. The audio comes back for a few minutes, then it's gone for hours.
Hopefully this thread will grab the attention of someone who might be able to help
Having the same issue on a regular Google Pixel. Also Google Assistant is not working using the "Ok Google" voice command and the phone app - answering and ending calls lag - same issue mic and speaker do not work. In Safe work, they work but on rebooting same issue persists.

I have been having these same issues with my phone. I noticed it happened after I downloaded the what's call app to make a WiFi call. I noticed another user had the problem after installing what's app to her phone. Could this somehow be the problem? I am not super tech savvy but I am convinced it is related to my downloading the what's call app. I have uninstalled the app. Still the problem remains. Any ideas? Thanks.
Has anyone that posted in this thread was able to resolve this issue? I also have this problem, I'm currently waiting for it to happen again so I can pull logcat but no idea what I should be looking for since I have no idea what can cause not being able to hear the caller so randomly.
I was originally suspecting V4A, but last night I flashed stock system img, did not install V4A and same issue occurred.
