I was ready to bin it. Then I sussed this out. It took me about 2 hours to do, but it works like a charm now (on my HTC Desire), and syncs with the phone book perfectly every time I use it.
1. Phone settings --> Accounts & Sync --> disable the facebook sync (and I'm assuming the other social network stuff, but I don't use the others.I left twitter, weather etc... running.
2. Uninstall the facebook app (the android marketplace one, the HTC one stays, and works the same, see #6)
3. All programs --> SetUp --> next, next etc... until you get to the "set up social networks" bit and disable the settings for facebook. So you can't auto update
3. Go through every contact in your "people" list and break all the links and delete the photos assosiated with them. I took this as an opportunity to have a spring clean and brought everything together properly, so everyone's email, alternate numbers etc were on the same contact and got rid of all those duplicates. Thats why it took so long. 256 of them
4. You can then re-associate picures with contacts after you've done this, or as you're doing it. I then backed it all up to the SD card for good measure.
5. Once you're all done, try your paired parrot again and the phonebook works perfectly, as it should!
6. Log into the HTC facebook app again if you use it, and they now both work perfectly!
I can't tell the difference betwen the two (HTC and android facebook app) anyway?
So that's my experience, hope it helps all you out there with the same issue. I'm guessing it's a mix of the way android/HTC links all your social networking stuff and your contacts.
No need for new hands free now
I had the same problem, and after a hard reset, and setting up the phone with all social networks except the facebook account worked perfectly, well the phonebook synching that is...So far the same behaviour as described above.
I then enabled the facebook HTC Sense account and after that the Face application itself, and after that the problems occured again. Am I right that the Facebook application is causing the problem, or that the HTC Sense one is causing it, because in your manual above you write to uninstall the Facebook application AND break all the facebook links? Because all the facebook links are created by the HTC Sense thingie I think. So maybe only disabling the HTC Sense, and breaking all the links are enough?
Looking forward to hearing to thoughts about this...
I still use the facebook app thats there on the phone by default and haven't updated it to the newer one from the market, it seems to work exactly the same as before I took it off.
The only difference that I can see from what I did above was that the photos don't update with the facebook ones and when I get service messages from orange (or my car insurance firm the day before I did it) it doesn't just apply a random facebook contact to it.
And having put all those details back, and keeping it all seperate it's still working like a charm. So I think just breaking those links and sorting the phone book out might be enough. I just took the scenic route
Parrot's microphone muted, so nobody hears me. With Nokia E65 O.K. What ROM to use not to have such a problem?
Hi all,
I am trying out a Desire this weekend, in general like it. I have got the Exchange sync to work for mail, cal & contacts however if I try to access the Company Directory (GAL) or Search the Inbox I get nothing returned.
I downloaded TouchDown to test and this works fine. But I dont want to use a 3rd Party tool for email (or I could have got a Nexus).
Has anybody else seen this error before, or have any idea's? Other wise its mail if back Monday.
Thank for your help.
Peter
Nobody can help
So HTC say, remove the sync and re-create. Does nothing.
Company IT say there are no more settings to change.
Am I the only person that has seen this, I found one other when searching web, but nobody replied.....
As an alternative would look at a GAL address book viewer?
Any help would be great, newbie with the phone and forum.
Whats your Exchange Version? For me with Echange 2010 it works fine.

The OWA server and Exchange Server is 2007. Did you have issues in the past?
I have the same issue only with Exchange 2003 (we'll be moving to 2007 soon). Was chuffed to finally get my email working today (firewall and all that) and have realised I can't browse the GAL. Might try Touchdown (although I had installed it before - will it let me use it as a Trial again???)...

I and a colleague of mine have the same problem with Exchange 2003 SP2. GAL search works fine on other phones (i.e. the iPhone).
I've seen people report that it works for them though, so I have no clue what's wrong, but I have an open ticket with HTC on the issue.
Well l'm using touchdown at the moment and it appears to work really well. Everything I could want from a client. Need to see if it is worth $20 though before taking the plunge. HTC Mail is a bit limited in comparison. although the OP doesn't want to buy a third party app I would say that is one of the points of Android that if the stock app doesn't work you can get hold of an app that does...

Thanks for the feedback, I also opened a ticket. Seems like very few people have reported this as and issue they either get all or nothing syncing.

I tried Touchdown, the issuethat I have is that the calander is then not combined which I really do like as a feature, and as far as I can see I cant just use it for email and get it to link to the standard apps I have to use it for contacts and Cal as well.
Same for me. I am syncing mails, calendar and contacts without any problems. Only company directory does not work.
I think it is not a connection problem. It is always telling me that nobody could be found. That is even happening when network connections are disabled. So it seems if this tool does not even try to connect.
Thats interesting, I did not try turning off the comm's, so at least it points to a software issue then. More hope HTC might fix it.
I think there may be an issue with contacts lookup via GAL/ Exchange 2003 on HTC STOCK Mail app. nothing shows up.

I had the same problem running Exchange 2003
GAL becomes inaccessible if security profiles are enabled ("Enforce password on device", etc..) and "Allow access to devices that do not fully support password settings" is disabled.
A bad workaround is to enable "Allow access to devices that do not fully support password settings", but that may prevent you from remotely wiping some devices and prevent some devices from initializing security profiles.
A better workaround is to add your account to the exceptions list. Doing that will enable access to GAL but disable the exchange lock screen.
I believe this is happening because either Android 2.1 or HTC mail application either doesn't support Exchange security profiles completely, or doesn't report them correctly.
Hi all, we have a product that might be of interest to you called GALSync Server. Unfortunately I can't post a URL but I'm sure you can find it with a bit of Googling.
It works by sync'ing a copy of the GAL into selected users' Exchange mailboxes which ActiveSync or BES then syncs in turn to the user's device. Works with iPhone or Windows Mobile.
We love it.
But we would wouldn't we.
Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the heads up, however its not what I am looking for:
1. You dont support Android from what I can tell.
2. I have to get the company to set it up.
I was hoping to either fix the HTC sync or an app on the handset that can get access.
Thanks
Agree with baronb. HTC needs to fix this issue. Corp IT Administrators will not make exceptions to their security settings. Also, I know from using Touchdown by Nitrodesk that it does, and CAN work.

I talked with HTC hot desk who were not very helpful and seemed to have lost my previous information. They said I should wait for an update!
At this point I am starting to look at alternatives as the lack of GAL for me while on the road was an issue last week.
Is there any more info on this one? I am having this bug too and it is the only thing stopping me from recommending the Desire as a suitable phone for my company to use for all staff right now!
Nothing, yet will bug Hotdesk again this week. The more people to log the error maybe the faster they will fix it.....+44 8458900079

Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and to this site as well.
I just bought the Desire Z and it looks like a nice one
When configure the phone I found an interesting problem that I have no idea how to over come and need your help.
When I sync the phone with my exchange mail in the office it is sync only my inbox and not any other sub folders I created in my mail box, unless I'm going to each one of the sub folders and sync in manually.
In my older phone (Touch pro2) I use to get it done automatically.
Is any one can help me on this ?
Another small question is how I can activate the screen lock on this phone ?
Thanks for speedy answers and sorry if I post it wrongly.
Regards,
Oren

screenlock is in the settings->security...
look in the "mail" settings. you have to select each folder then after that it will autosync. how many folders do you have?
I don't know if their latest HTC ROM update has changed this, but unfortunately the ROM my HTC Desire Z came with (1.34.405.5) can't synchronise other folders automatically. Whilst viewing email you can press menu and select other folders, but it'll download the email then, there's no way to make it do it automatically.
The stock Android email client (which the person above me is talking about) CAN synchronise other folders, but unless you're prepared to change ROMs (or at the very least root it and try and swap in the stock Android mail application) I don't think there's much of a solution.
However, a word of warning which might not make you want to bother, the synchronisation works differently to how it did on Windows Mobile (I previously had a Touch Pro2 as well!): On WM you could set a folder to sync, but only the Inbox would alert/notify, the other folders would just be there ready downloaded whenever you wanted them. However, the stock Android client will sync the extra folders AND alert you whenever new email arrives in them.
To me this was a pain in the neck because I have Exchange sending messages to some folders that I will read later/don't care about when they come in (information messages etc) so of course I have to unsync those folders now because it'll alert me if something goes into them, I only wanted them there ready downloaded for when I wanted to check.
On the plus side the stock app can also "hide" folders from view, but then it also can't move messages to another folder (which the HTC version can!)... If only the mail client had features from both...

Wow ! Thank you so much for such a post !
For me it is kind of a must have as I travel a lot and need to see the mails coming (by the way, on the TP2 there was a green number of mails near each sub folder) and not to sync manually about 25-30 sub folders .
will try to speak to HTC people - I will update of any new ideas

I run IT support for about 95-100 traveling salesmen, almost all of them require mobile email support.
This issue has come up a few times now for IPhones, the way it's corrected with that is by setting the days to sync from the default 3days to no limit. It's not the best fix, as most of these people with this issue are dealing with exchange mailboxes around 5gb's (ceo's and regional managers), so it just eats into the phones space, but it works.
Possibly it will work for androids as well.
I have a tmobile g2, but I use google for mailhosting, exchange support isn't quite ready for any of the big 3 phones (BB iphone and android).

Thanks for this, So there is no answer even not in the market ?
Interesting !
i'm personally hating how exchange simply doesn't work on android, atleast on virtuous ROM for the desire z.
After almost 2 hours of telling it to create an exchange account on my phone and finally be able to create one, I run into a problem that it goes on a refresh spree and spams my notification with the one unread email that I have over and over again until i delete the damn account. I hope hotmail gets their crap together and support imap or atleast get their damn exchange server to work properly.

Checkout Touchdown in the market.....
Closest yet and you can choose which files to sync......
Good update.
IE9 : Great, except for removing the Quick Buttons for Tabs and Favorites
Bing : Vision and Audio Great. Local Scout I haven't tried.
Search Button : Removed Contextual Search Button - Terrible.
Messaging Hub : WLM and FB Chat are virtually useless. Messages come in way too late, if they even arrive at all. 90% of the time, they don't arrive for WLM. Haven't tested FB, but not expecting anything different there.
Visual Voicemail : for me (on T-Mobile), excellent.
Task Switching : Excellent
Email Client Changes : Excellent
Office Hub Changes : Excellent but it feels like no one tested this. You can't mvoe or delete files in your skydrive. When you back out of a folder you go straight to Office Hub instead of One Folder up. Things are alphabetized, but they don't put folders on top. It's all mixed in there. Just seems a bit messy. Otherwise, works as you'd generally think it's intended to work. Connections are very fast, not a lot of load time.
People Hub Changes : Generally great. Still doesn't update in the background, which makes the load times even more ridiculous if you have a lot of updates to load.
Me Hub Changes : Great. Live Tile works for Social Notifications.
*** WP7 Still Doesn't have a decent notification Cache, which is a bit terrible. Needed ASAP, IMO.
Calendar : Synching of To-Dos from Windows Live is a much welcome feature.
XBox Live looks better.
Picture Hub by default does a slideshow of all your pictures. Not a welcome'd default.
Podcast support in Zune HD Hub : Yay!
Biggest disappointment for me was the apparent uselessness of the WLM/Facebook chat in Messaging Hub. It was probably the single biggest feature I was waiting for when you assume obvious things like Browser, etc. would be brought up to par (which they have been, exceeding many expectations). That being said, it makes me feel less bad about spending $9.99 on Beejive for Android 4 days ago.
I can't believe Microsoft forced IM+ to butcher their IM app... for this... And the worst thing is this will not get fixed without a full FW update, since it's built into the OS.
yeah I miss the buttons for new tabs and favorites/history
with
Picture Hub by default does a slideshow of all your pictures. Not a welcome'd default.
if you set it to shuffle background it will do a slide show of your favorites
and
I havent used FB chat on RTM yet, but with the Dev beta FB chat worked great and fast
If the FB works great and fast that's cool and all.
I just know the WLM is useless outside of knowing who's online or sending one message you don't expect a response to, because it barely recieves the replies and when it does it recieves them anywhere from 0.5-3 minutes after other WLM clients both on WP7 and other platforms.
It's actually worse than Messenger by Miyowa, which is a miracle...
not sure your issue with WLM. It works flawlessly for me (and in real time).
-R
The WLM / Facebook chat works allright for me. It takes a little longer for messages to reach, but I've had long, fast conversations with it and it has worked flawlessly.
I was testing it out earlier by chatting back and forth with a friend of mine. Worked just fine. As soon as I hit send, I saw it come up on the computer. When I saw his message hit the comp, it hit my phone. Last one was about 2 seconds behind.
Now, I was on wi-fi. So, performance may vary with connection speed. Will test on 3G tomorrow.
My FB chat is almost instant. (Sprint HTC Arrive)
Facebook almost instant. Wlm, no.
And sorry but I was trying it with two phones and a computer. Its not operator error.

WLM on the phone I think from my experience stops receiving messages if you respond elsewhere. Fo exmaple if a friend messages me, I get it simultaneously on the phone, web and desktop messenger. If I repsond on the phone I recieve all replies in realtime across all options. However if I reply on the desktop messenger or the web, I no longer recieve replies on the phone until I start responding on the phone. This works fine for me as it saves battery since im already responding elsewhere.
That's how it's intended to work. You're only supposed to receive responses on your phone to messages that were sent from your phone. With that being said, my WLM and Facebook are both instant. Not sure if it has to do with signal strength or what. I use both all day, and both never hiccup.
Haven't tried WLM yet, but FB chat is absolutely instant for me. I chatted with my wife basically in real time from my phone to her laptop.
They have removed timer from dropdown volume bar when tracks are played.
Call history still doesn't show call duration.. Only history which is useless.
I don't want that favorite window in pics hub. I don't have time to favorite pics.
Can't add more than 20 people to one group.

Had the same issue with fb chat over wifi. But it's real time with 3G.
Maybe it's my connection and it's unrelated.
I would give it an 8 out of 10, they lose points for the extra taps required for tabs and favourites in IE. Biggest joy for me though was being able to change the default search provider from the truly awful Yahoo that O2 UK had forced upon us in earlier version to Bing!!!
It would appear to me if you have a contact that is Facebook linked and WLM linked it will only allow you to message them on there Facebook, which i guess makes sense since most people like them bother.
Bad:
Twitter updates doesnt work even though my account has synched with the phone.
Windows Live posts/updates doesnt work either.
Hardware search-button is COMPLETELY useless. "We can't connect to search at the moment. Check mobile data or WiFi connection".. Yeah I have full data and WiFi connection thank you very ****ing much. This is bull****. I know Local Scout and Bing Maps isnt available here but at least give me a web search or send me to bing web page. Useless!
Since I activated my Swedish Live-ID Zune doesn't get artist-backgrounds or artist-info. I should have figured since Zune Service isnt available here in Sweden. Album art on lockscreen doesn't work either. (Seriously?! I understand why we cant buy music through the Zune Service yet here in Sweden but why the hell cant my albumart be displayed?)
Good:
I love the new Live Tiles for groups and Me-tile, love the notifications.
Love Threads in email-apps and the ability to link mailboxes.
Like the new fb-integration, so far I havent installed the fb-app, I still miss that we cant see who like a certain photo etc.

Wrong. WLM supports multiple points of presense.
Being logged in at multiple places doesn't matter. WLM has worked like this for over half a decade, now, if not longer.

The Phone Prioritizes FB > WLM > SMS/MMS
You can switch between the three manually, with the switch button on the bottom of the screen.
Too bad there are no delivery confirmations like BeejiveIM or S/D/R tags like Blackberry/Kik Messenger.
Would like the ability to send Video, Contact, and Location as well.
Posting this in general, as I'm not asking a question. I'm stating my findings. Though, feel free to chime in with your experiences.
I'm quite frustrated with mail on my One X. It drives me so insane, I want to go back to my Gnex or iPhone because mail works flawlessly on those. I have read others claiming they don't have this issue, but that's bull. I have had the AT&T version and now the International version and this problem is very real.
I have two accounts set up as Exchange accounts: One is my work e-mail, the other is Gmail. I also have Gmail set up through the native app.
Mail will work fine for a while, then just stops coming in. Today, it was my work e-mail account. I went into Accounts and Sync and there was a "!" on Calendar. It seems like when it can't sync one component of the account, nothing else comes in. I could be wrong. Most certainly, mail stops coming into the Mail app from time-to-time. It's like it just goes to sleep.
It will then inexplicably start working for a while, then stop again. It drives me batty. The moral of the story is, I can't rely on my phone for e-mail at this point, which is kind of a fundamental function of a smartphone. It's even more frustrating when I see the mail come in on every other device and my One X just doesn't get it. If I open Mail, it comes in and sometimes it will work normally for a while after that, but then it stops again.
Really hoping HTC fixes this soon, because it's a serious issue. The only thing I haven't tried is using a 3rd party client, but I don't want to do that because then the mail conversations won't be threaded in my contact history. And honestly, I shouldn't have to.
Also, disclaimer, I am NOT set to Smart Sync on any of my accounts. They are all push.
I can confirm that I am having the same experience and its really pi##ing me off!
Occasionally I get a message stuck in the Outbox as well and then it just keeps on resending the mail. 27 times once!
It also really sucks the battery when it plays up like this.
Always seems to happen after low or no connectivity.

It happens to me with WiFi here at home. It's not just Mail but also other apps that need to sync like Weather. It's not because of the apps but because even though it shows my WiFi is connected, it is actually disconnected.
I went to another house with WiFi the other day. Perhaps they have different settings... Either way it never happened there. NEVER. I received e-mails right away on my Mail Exchange... Right away. My Weather never missed the update schedule.
Btw, have you enabled the security thing with Mail For Exchange? Something to do with the server. I have only enabled it yesterday.

Is it because of sync setting?
I have 2 work email account, one set as push and another set to auto sync every 4 hours, both works fine no matter i'm on 3G or wifi. Besides, my Gmail using the native gmail app also works fine. The moment i saw a notification on my desktop then immediately the phone will notify me.
This is a very real issue for me, i was just about to make a thread on it myself. I have 2 email accounts, a hotmail and a gmail, neither refuse to sync. I Cant see new or old messages, sent, deleted etc on either account. It did work at one point but then it stopped again for no apparent reason.
100% battery
doesnt work on network or wifi
everything else syncs fine, inc dropbox and weather.

There is definatly an issue on HTC's side.
My exchange mail isnt working well as well. Set it to push...the first few minutes/hours AFTER I turned off the screen pushing works more or less good.
Test mails arrives a few seconds/sometimes minutes after I sent them to my own mail account...but when the phone is idling for some more hours it wont sync the mails anymore...it starts syncing the mails again when I turn on the screen.
Really annoying imo. On gingerbread push mail was working fine..mails arrived seconds after you sent them to the maila ccount that syncs the mails on the device.
I think the issue is smartsync in the settings.apk.
It tries to handle the data connection of the device to give better battery life..but therefore breaks for example proper mail syncing.
On gingerbread you was able to deactivate that feature, it was called "constant mobile data" or similar..if you unckecked it, your mobile data went to sleep after a while when your turned off the screen....on ICS you cant control it yet...Hope htc will fix it for the next OTA.

Well if thats the issue then its poorly designed. I'm seriously considering exchanging for the S3.
Regardless of when it is set to sync, it should sync when i want it to. So if i have manual sync, then when i refresh it i should be able to see new email, correct?

Yeah, that's what it seemed like to me: That HTC was defaulting to smartsync, even when it was set to Push, because it'll start working fine for a while, then stop again. This is really my only issue with the phone currently and it's also one of the most critical. It needs to be addressed sooner, rather than later.
This has been happening to me too. It is not new though. It happened on my HTC Sensation. E-mail would gets stuck in the outbox and tells me it has failed when in fact it is sending it over and over and people end up with multiple e-mails from me. It is extremely frustrating. I also get the exclamation mark when trying a manual sync. It ONLY happens over WiFi and it is not all the time. It happens on different WiFi connections, not just mine and it can sometimes be fine for days. The annoying thing is, I do not know I am unable to receive e-mail until I try sending one and it fails. As soon as it fails I know the problem is back and I have to switch WiFi off.
Glad I am not the only one with this issue. I may end up trying a third party mail app if it isn't fixed.
Yes, this is very annoying.
Happened to me once too, and I had to remove my account and re-create it.
Fixed it - but that's just really a work around for a problem that shouldn't exist...

This doesn't work for me. I wish it was that easy.
