[Q] Stock Android (AOSP) Usage Query - Contacts and Group Texts - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've recently gone to DeFroST ROM from Sense based ROMS and have come across the following issues that I can't work out:
1. Group texts (SMS/MMS). In the 'To' box, you have to type the first few letters of each contact. Is there no way it can just display a list so I can select the contacts I wish to text? Or create/select a group? I can't always remember everyone!
2. Saving contacts. When saving a number/adding a contact, where is the contact saved, SIM/Phone? How can you specify this? Once saved, how can you copy it to the Phone/SIM (depending on the default save location). I can see this causing issues if I need to use another phone for whatever reason and I don't have all contacts on my SIM. I know there is a 'export to sd' option but that may not work for another phone.
Thanks.

Group Text messaging

hello, i often have to taxt 15 people the same message, does anyone know if i can group these together instead of inserting their names in one by one. thanks.
as far as I know, SMS can only be sent to one person at a time (hence Simple Messaging Service). I sell cell phones, and have asked my reps this question in the past; all of them gave me a resounding "no".
Group SMS, I'm sure there is something like that....

I believe what he means is multiple SMS receipents for the same message? There's a lot of mobile phones that can do that now.
If you go pocketgear or handago, i think there's quite a few selection you can choose from.
Regards.
thats what i meant,,, any ideas what the programes are called??. peter
If you just put several numbers, spaced out with ";", does that not work?
Cheers
thanks , yes that works but only for that time, i want to keep that group so every week i can just send to one group .. peter
can't you make a contact with that list as mobile phone number ? Not a nice solution, but it might work.
tried that, doesnt work for some reason , thanks anyway. peter
I tried saving a list as one number as described, even though I use semi-colon as seperator it appears as one long number when calling it from contacts, it does however work that one time when entered manually with seperator.
One way is to use Contacts to create a category for the group of numbers, then add the numbers you want as contacts within that category.
Then select that category in Contacts, select all, tap and hold, then select Send SMS. This puts all the numbers in the 'To:' field separated by ';' I haven't tried actually sending an SMS like this so I don't know if it will work.
If it does, then hopefully it will fill in the numbers from the Contacts category correctly each time.
Has anybody tried this yet?
I have tried, it but even if you insert the ";" and a space when you press send SMS it transfers the number without the ";" and space so its just one long number in my case 15 x 11 = 165 :x

I use this method often and it works. The only bad thing is that I have to tick every single contact in the category.
no matter what trick to use with Contacts it will be limited to 15 names only ... try search for "sendSMS" free s/w ... it does the job nicely with retrying for failed messages ... it supports also flash SMSs
saving all the numbers in contacts with a ";" and a space did work . i tried it yesterday several times but nothing happened, this morning they all came through  they must have got lost in cyber space somewhere.
thanks for every ones help and sugestions .

question on sending messages.

How do you select several people at a time when you send a same message?
its very annoying when u only allow to select one person at a time and click on add recipient millions time when you try to send a message like "happy new year" to 300 people.
Anyway, happy new year to everyone.
if you press enter on the key board it goes to the contact list you have to pick one at a time but you can do it in the same message, not sure if there's another way around this...
Yes, it's limiting. I had been looking for a mail client that has the concept of mailing list for a long time but could't find one.
If anyone knows of such a mail client, please share.
Power SMS has a functionality to define "groups" for multisending, and selecting a group it adds automatically the recipients in standard sms. of course you still have to add contacts one at time, but you have to do the process one time only (next year, hopefully, you'll still have the "new year's eve" database)

so u mean we can't go to multi-selection mode and select several people at at time then? Does the Power SMS able to do so? Coz u can't define a group that work for every message.
But thanks.
as an add on to your Q how can you make the text box bigger any one know?
Have you tried groupsms in google?
Worked for me. I only know because someone else on this forum recomended it to me for exactly the same reason but in another thread.
Hope this helps.
Enter your numbers as follows
<no 1>;<no 2>;<no 3> and so on...
You can save a contact with the mobile numbers set to a group of numbers in the format svown and then enter this one contact and the to: list is filled with the numbers for you.
Actually... there are 2 others ways to add multiple recipients... although neither is as quick as simply ticking all that apply!
[1] Tap the word "To:", select a contact, and repeat.
[2] In the space after the "To:", type the first letter of the contact name... and a selection of contacts starting with that letter will be shown in a horizontally scrolling list just above the keyboard. When you've found which contact to add in that list... click it, and it will be added to the "To:" field, followed by a ";" ready for you to repeat the process for the next contact!
GROUP SMS
Try Group sms

I've been using this for ages...grown very comfortable with it too. Now, yesterday, all of a sudden, something happened and it doesn't put in the ";" automatically I admit, it's only a small thing, but it's annoying once you're so used to doing something one way. So if anyone has any idea how to fix it...please help!
PS: Closing messaging and restarting it didn't work, and neither did a soft reset

Messaging Contacts List In Official Sense 2.5 Rom

I recently upgraded to the new official European wm6.5 sense 2.5 rom. While trying to get my head around the new slow default text messaging app I noticed that when I go to add a recipient, the contact list displays my sim contacts as well as a separate entry for different numbers of the same person. For instance, if I have someone called Alex with both a home number and a mobile number entered, the contact list will display it as two separate contacts. I should also add that I have disabled showing sim contacts using advanced config, and they don't show in the "normal" contact list, just in the messaging one.
As you can imagine, this makes navigating through the contacts much more untidy and time consuming.
Any help will be appreciated
is there no one else with this problem? I was hoping there would be a reg fix or something to sort this out like we've had before

Nope, as I don't use the sim for contacts. I would suggest that you do the same too, no more problemo.

I dont use sim either.. ive disabled it on the normal contact list. But it seems to show up in the messaging contact list as well as home numbers and email addresses and these are not all grouped under a single contact.

In that case, sounds like you need to go into the sim manager and delete the numbers off the sim, if that doesn't work, get your provider to do you a new sim.

SMS Vcards Vanishing!!!!

Hi all you great helpers out there! I've gained so much knowledge from all you guys on this forum. It's soooooo helpful!!! Thanks!!!
When I receive a vcard via sms, I click on the vcard in the sms reader and up pops the message "the vcard has been imported successfully".
Great me thinks!
But when I actually try to find the contact in my contacts, it simply isnt there!!!!
HELP!!!
Thanks a billion for your help!
I had the same. In the end I selected the phone number and pasted it in a new contact manually :-(
Well, here's some things I know and maybe this will help you out.
vCards are imported into the phone memory. You don't have a choice.
If you have set you phone to view only a certain type of contacts (e.g. just Google contacts) then you won't see any contact sent to you via SMS or MMS. If this is the case, the just go to People - Menu - View and select the phone contacts to view as well.

Thanks for this. I've checked, but sadly, my people view isn't restricted yet I still can't see the contact my phone told me that it just saved.

Multiple Reciptents

Hi im trying to find a way of send a message to all my contacts, without typing each name individually into the sender box. Is there anyone that can help?
Thanks in Advance,
James
I came across this issue myself over christmas when I wanted to send multiple sms to certain contacts.
Sadly I couldnt figure out how to do it with the stock messaging app so I installed GO SMS and that done the trick.
While this is more than likely a missing feature I cant believe that google didnt include it as standard.
You just select a contact then tap back on and select another one?? Same as always
Or am I missing something? This is same as most phones

the way you describe is correct but can take ages if you want to add about 20+ contacts.
Google should of added a tickbox method or "select all" option at least
Yeah i wanted a bit of a quicker method. When trying to send contacts my new number this becomes too time consuming, ill ad the other app. Hope Android adds this feature on the next update.
Get groupy... it allows you to select multiple contacts and send a group message to them using the stock messaging app. It even allows you to select whole groups and send group messages to them...
