Hi @ all
I know it wont be a 100% reliable news but I thought it would interest some of you.
A friend of mine ordered a HTC Desire at Sunrise (Swiss Operator). She was told that the delivery will be postponed to the beginning of August due to the fact that the device will be delivered with version 2.2 of Android aka Froyo.
That would mean that we could possibly get the official Froyo by the end of July for unbranded devices.
Hope the staff at Sunrise is reliable and the info is right!!!
We will know more in about one month.
Sorry if the news has already been posted before.
Sinerely,
Ascenca
Interesting
Well, HTC Customer Service reps got the date wrong for this. So I doubt that a network service provider rep has that much information.
I have a feeling your friend couldn't get a Desire because of the same problem that the Droid Incredible is facing. HTC has a shortage of AMOLED screens.
See here. http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/veri...le-shortage-due-to-amoled-production-shortage
Also, see here for a (probably) more realistic time table direct from HTC PR guy. http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-says-expect-froyo-version-sense-ui-christmas

Thanks für your reply.
I am aware of the shortage of AMOLED displays and the recent PR statement of HTC. I dont pretend my info is right, only wanted to share what I heard. Nevertheless I think August could be possible. The PR guy said that all newer devices (Desire, Legend, etc.) will get Froyo by Christmas. The HTC Desire being their top end device at the moment in Europe I assume it will get the update first. And I am quite sure that they wont provide the update to all devices at the same time. So lets hope for it to be true .

There's no timetable there at all - it just says that they'll be finished with Froyo updates before Xmas. Well, August is before Xmas, as is September, October, November and most of December!
What we do know is that HTC have gone on record to say that they are expecting the first updates to roll out in Q3, but we don't know which devices will get it first.
Regards,
Dave

Lets hope it's true and the Desire gets 2.2 in August before the other phones, but i must admit that 2.1 is great and i have no issues with it so am happy to wait whenever it comes out.
It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect. I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas.
This was an intervjue with Eric Lin HTC PR dude

That's no good. I'm going on holidays at the beginning of August lol

It seems alot of the replies in this thread don't take into account the fact that a HTC 2.2 test rom with sense has already been leaked to certain people and was mostly working. So HTC are pretty far along in development already.
Yes i know about that rom. Thats why i think its strange that HTC PR guy talks about crhistmas?

I think this is cos they want to prevent what happened with the 2.1 Update for the HTC Hero (more than a half year between announcement and shipment, at least in europe).
Better to make promises they can hold. So the Christmas announcement makes completly sense to me.

Yes thats probably the reason. But it might make people not buying the Desire also and go for another brand like Samsung Galaxy S or even the Iphone 4 =P
Oh well, Im glad we have the Devs who get froyo roms out =)
Roms that dont work
Not trying to offend anyone.. I m pretty new to the HTC Desire (3 days) but VERY happy I forgot I ever had a 3GS.
But as far as roms are concerned, I see it is not worth using them since simple stuff such as video recording do not work.
Man, hope this better be true.
Sorry to sound so retardly geeky but it's been such a deep sadness for not being able to use the sdcard for applications. I'm sure you dudes feel the same!

The only thing they have said is that they will be done BEFORE Christmas, that could be any time not precisely Christmas, it just gives them a window to allow for things to go wrong.
Another hint the update is not far of (statement from Eric Lin, global PR and online community Manager of HTC):
"I don't think you're going to see that really long six month, seven month lag, like you saw in the updates from 1.5 to 2.1, simply because it's a less severe change. Switching from 2.1 to 2.2, they made a lot of tweaks, but they didn't make any gigantic changes, so it should be a much swifter process".

I didn't think the Desire had 720p video capture but according to this it does. http://www.htc.com/uk/product/desire/specification.html
Could this mean there's finally something going on with the Desire?

No it doesn't without custom ROMs. It's something that from day one HTC hasn't been able to make up its mind about. It would seem highly likely that it will be coming with the 2.2 update but surely not before?
I say typo...

And the HTC page for Sweden do state 720P recording too! So it should be getting closer to FROYO!
guys!!!! not to disappoint but that page has been like that since March this year. It always said it did 720p recording even though it didn't. plus that page still says 2.1 Eclair,. and we know that 2.1 cannot do 720p recording. so its just HTC BS thats been there since the start. The chinese page that says 2.2 android looks more promising.
Guess it wasn't updated correctly. The Portal admin missed out on updating the O/S to 2.2 as well. The page design have changed, it wasn't so much "in your face" before.
offtopic; but there are things happening at HTC...

Twitterpost from a HTC Europe guy "Froyo is coming soon" .. wont take long anymore it says
Looks very promising !! ... I was really starting to think I'de have to Root my device.
Hope this appears to be true
"We start with Desire" hopefully that means 2.2... wish it was in English so I could follow it easier.

Well he is the chairman of HTC Benelux, so I would think it's reliable
2.2 has started coming down to a small number of devices already. Officially.
We've already gathered that Verizon, Moto, and HTC all seem to be pretty well committed to bumping most of their Droid models to Froyo (as well they should), but things are starting to get real -- really real. First off, we've been fed a shot of a tipster's Droid X that has apparently already been blessed with 2.2 over the air;

I don't see why the Dutch would get their own 2.2 rollout. so its probably across Europe. Fingers crossed.
To be honest, the video recording ability isn't that good...

HTC today lauched the Desire HD and Desire Z both of which have the new HTCSence.com services which lets you manage your device from a web browser where you can find your lost phone, clear all information from the phone and transfer information from device to device.
Anyone know if this service will be available to other users of the old HTC Sense before the new phones?

false... not everyone needs a smartphone, and for many people nokia handsets are "smart enough", or simply they need "dumb phones" that can call, call well and call for long time! Days of standby, some models even weeks... do it with a smartphone, if you can, without a nuclear portable power source... it's STILL and will be for many years the first producer, because it has a range of devices that goes from the basic device of as low as 20€, to the smartphones that have still now many people used to its GUI... an android or iphone user doubtly will return to THAT gui, btw...
From Engadget:
Eric Lin was on hand to answer the question of when this new Sense might trickle down to the classic Desire or other handsets in HTC's portfolio. Well, his answer was a non-answer: no roadmap or schedule has been set and HTC isn't ruling anything out just yet.

Anyway, -my beloved developers ( )- some guys have uploaded some gingerbread stuff ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863317 ) but I dont really know what this is..Will we get a custom ginger anytime soon?
so we still dont know if desire will get gingerbread officially from HTC??

bit of a bold statement.
seeing as the nexus 1 and nexus s cpu speed is the same spec i see no reason why HTC will not upgrade at some point the 3 desire phones as these are there flagships. by not upgrading the standard desire they risk losing people who must have '2.3' to another brand. My view is in early 2011 they will roll this update out to all 3 and also bring the standard desire up to the HD and Z in sense terms. i believe they held this off for marketing reasons. Juts my view mind.

My thoughts exactly, if not, someone will eventually port .
Yes.. My feeling is that the desire will get the new Sense along with Gingerbread release.
Well.. even if they dont release it officially for Desire, they will have to release it anyway for the Z/HD and our mods can port it in no time. Our Desires dont have the hardware limitation (especially internal storage with A2SD/D2SD). Then we desire users can flash those roms and show the finger to HTC...
We have the mods... they are our gods!!
Market reason?
With the 2 years warranty there must be not only assistance in case of broken phone, but also the confirmation of continous upgrading with new software, bugfix until the 2 years are passed and 'til the phone risk not to support th upgrading.
This should be the real 2 year warranty so much declared in the instructions and things like that

Looks like Samsung beat HTC this time, Galaxy S in EU recieved Gingerbread update today.

For me this is another important point for decision between SGS2 and HTC Sensation.

Typed on Motorola Xoom
gingerbread leaked for Desire
I cooked ROM and flashed a2sd works. Updated Radio its based on the old Sense with some tweak. Had old marker but was able to update Vending apk. Unfortunately, because don't post often unless I can contribute I'm considered a new member and am not allowed to post in the development area or upload files. I based by ROM on leedroid's previous roms as in my opinion he is one of the top 2 developers working on HTC Desire ROMs.
Anyhow, his version is set to be out tonight. Search the forum threads. Again not new sense but its gingerbread and its a begining.
Acc to Eurodroid "HTC Desire Android 2.3 update coming in the middle of May" at least for the Three/UK customers. anyway, it will -soon or later- come to all our Desires.
Personally, I will be keep waiting until my contract expiry date comes (~Apr 2012) with better feelings against HTC if I get this eagerly awaited update. Cheers!
