[KERNEL] coolbho3000's overclock module for the (European?) Desire Z release - G2 and Desire Z Android Development

Hi all,
I've recompiled coolbho3000's overclock module for the recently released Desire Z. It's available on
Overclock Module
All credit goes to coolbho3000, and all instructions are the same as for the G2

You both are stars Thanks dude
JD

you sir are my hero. Will test in a few hours. I bought SetCPU (in case coolbho3000 is trollin' here)

I think it worked, but my SetCPU couldn't get root access so I couldn't change it. I'm going to try again to verify.

Confirmed, this works.
Overclocked to 1.4 Ghz right now on Bell Desire Z.

It is also working for me. Awesome job!

@stridger:
first, thanks for recompiling
second, have you been able to run it ?? is it working for you (Euro D-Z) ??
Guys does this mean both (Euro and Bell-NAM) share THE SAME KERNEL ??
This would be great news, opening the path for firmware swap, aka "debranding"
.

This would depend on other things, the kernel version does not say much about compatibility of ROMS, though it could be an indicator. The question is whether the signing keys are the same, what Radio and HBOOT version they run etc. But it would be easy for somebody to find out by simply flashing a European ROM.

A little more detail please
Sorry, I'm still a little new. I have temp root from Visionary. But can some one tell me the command line for
1.copying the file to the data/local folder
2.running "insmod /data/local/vision_oc.ko" as root
Any help would be appreciated.
my adb skills are low
Thanks
Edit.
Sorry let me rephrase my question. What i'm not understanding is the following.
1. Is temp root enough
2. If so, when they say run as root, do i need to enter rootshell or can i just run the file through adb if temp root is set on phone.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yes temp root is enough.
1.Download one of the free Terminal Emulators..
2.Enable USB Debugging then run Visionary to root the phone.
3.Run your Terminal Emulator and type in 'su' then enter. A little popup screen should come up stating 'Terminal Emulation has been given SuperUser Permission'
4. Make sure that you've copied vision_oc.ko to your sdcard.
5. Change directory into your sdcard and copy the file to /data/local.
su (If you haven't already)
cd /sdcard
cp vision_oc.ko /data/local
cd /data/local
insomd vision_co.ko
Then you can run SetCPU (Buy this program, it's worth the $1.99) and update all your settings..

Thanks a lot, I will give it a try tonight.

errr.. you spelled it wrong - it's insmod
Also - you sure the file was pushed to your device? you have to have it in your /data/local/ to be able to apply it.

Try
Code:
insmod /data/local/vision_oc.ko
But if you want 1420mhz, you need to type in
Code:
insmod /data/local/vision_oc.ko pll2_l_val=74

Any way we could get this bad boy as a true kernel instead of a module?

keeps saying insmod: init_module failed no such file or directory, even though it is definetly there
ok tried again and it just froze up?

I know on linux you can add lines to etc/modules to make modules load on boot. Is this possible on android?

YOU NEED ROOT!
Instructions:
Copy package to the ROOT of you sdcard and extract it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=434724&d=1288983166
Install Gscript Lite
Open Gscript via app drawer

Ensure "Needs SU?" is checked
Save
Run Script
**The phone will then do a "Hot Restart", let it boot again et voila!

Love it! Works a treat.
I extracted the zip prior to installing it on my SD card as I wasn't sure how to extract the zip once it was on my device. Use Astro perhaps, but disk mode when connected to the PC is much easier (if you have access to a PC, I guess).
I was confused about "Install Gscript (inside /sdcard/gscript)" as I couldn't specify where it was installed, however GScript Lite installed from Market using it's defaults worked just fine.
Just to be clear, make sure you're rooted prior to running the script...
@JupiterDroid:
Thanks for the contrib
1.- May I suggest you to add "YOU NEED ROOT !!" and "download GScript Lite from the Market" to the tutorial,

Had this working before but it doesn't seem to be working after I have done Perm Room, S-Off and flashed Paul's custom rom.

rom is one i was testing other day i just added this file to make use of prtition it works but fc at start up other than that seems ok,. just wanted a expert opinion.ta
Out of interest, does the rom have:
"/system/bin/e2fsck_recvy"
As per the script?
yep that files in there
OK. Is there a reason you're not going with data2sd like I suggested?
to be honest yeah. ive been banging my head against a door with it i just can get it to run. ive got the gingerbread rom rooted bloat free i just want the extra space. so how would i slap data2sd in it?
well the thing with data2sd (as per my link to the thread in your other thread) is that there is actually support from the developer in that thread still. Also Droidzone is there at hand to help too.
If you follow the data2sd instructions and get stuck, you're more likely to get through it that way.
ok i get u mate. problem i had with that one was at the chmod says not found.

You have to be in adb shell or a linux terminal of some kind to use chmod. Its a linux command, but if you're not in adb shell on a windows machine, you are simply in an ms dos command prompt, which does not recognise linux commands
i have the adbshell under windows sdk tools yeah?
Can be anywhere as long as you make sure cmd is set to try the same location. See faq in my signature

[GUIDE] Setting Up and Activating SWAP Partition Without Breaking USB Mass Storage

Okay, many of you complain about USB MASS STORAGE not working with swap enabled. So heres a guide, using CWM (latest version) to set it up with working USB.
NEEDED:
MicroSD (i use class 4 sandisk 8gb)
Root+Busybox
CWM Recovery* (see post 2 for reasons of the *)
Terminal Emulator/ADB
Download this file http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1169731/swap_enabler.sh and place it IN THE ROOT OF YOUR SD!!!
Precautionary:BACKUP EVERYTHING ON MICRO SD CARD.
Steps:
Making the partition
Make sure you have everything backed up, as this WILL wipe your SD.
Boot into clockworkmod recovery.
Go to Advanced->Partition SD Card->EXT and Swap. I chose 128mb for EXT and 256 for SWAP.
Activating Through ADB
Make sure you downloaded that file earlier.
Type this into the CMD:
Code:
adb shell
chmod 755 /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
And reboot
When your phone has rebooted, go back into ADB, and type:
Code:
adb shell
free
and if you didnt not get 0's next to SWAP, it worked.
Activating through Terminal Emulator
Load up Terminal Emulator
Type in this:
Code:
su
chmod 755 /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
reboot. when your phones has booted back up, load terminal emulator once more, and type:
Code:
su
free
and if there isnt a bunch of 0's next to SWAP, it worked
And thats that!
Enjoy
TO DISABLE THROUGH ADB:
adb shell (skip if you're already in adb shell)
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh disable
Click to collapse
TO DISABLE THROUGH TERMINAL EMUALTOR
su
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh disable
Click to collapse
NEW QUICK EASY WAY (HIT AND MISS)
1) download script manager from the market
2) run swap_enabler.sh with script manager
3) reboot
SPECIAL THANKS TO: Nv for the script, and cimer for the original guide.
also, thanks to cjward for reminding me to put in the thanks ;D
* this guide is for CWM recovery, as the steps for 4EXT may be different. Also, when i tried to do it with 4EXT, it never activated the swap partition correctly.
Man, I've been trying to get this right. Think I messed up because I did not restart after running the script, so when I did the free command I got them zeros.

The 8GB one that came standard with the G2 in the US, Dec 2010. If you need me to take it out and confirm what kind, I will, because this something I want to learn how to do. Also, I tried it with the ILWT Rom. I was trying to get to to work because I wanted to flash that Virtuous 3.5
PS - Anyone have a better method for backing up the SD card besides creating a folder on the desktop and dragging everything in there?
when i type su in terminal emulator I get
"[1] + Stopped (signal)"
I'm now getting a +2 error.
This is mildly frustrating because it seems so easy. I've learned several other processes to do to my phone, and THIS is the one that I get hung up on?
Latest debacle:
I wipe using G2+Superwipe. Make partitions of 128 and 256. Sdcard goes completely blank, so I have to mount it in recovery, and load up a nandroid. I figure, its still all good, go through with it. So I run the commands in Terminal Emulator and get the +2 error. damn damn damn

well, new SDK is giving me problems setting up on my mac. Now you have to use SDK manager, which says to run 'android' file, and when I do it gives me an error just as its about to finish setting up.
Ugh, I want this to happen.

This I would also like to know! Thx!
While I can't be 100%, I would say that it wouldn't help you much at all, on any CM based ROMs. Just the ones that are RAM intensive (i.e., sense roms). I know that I only want it to run the Virtuous 3.5 ROM.
Can anyone tell me is there a difference between doing it this way, or just using the app "swapper for root" from the app market..?
Thanks
Thought I would pop in. Doing it via terminal does not normally work you need to do it via ADB. If you're unfamiliar with ADB please go to here: http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/ and learn about it. It can be such a useful tool. You do not need swap for CM7,MIUI, or Sense 2.1. It can be needed for Sense 3.0 or Sense 3.5 because Sense is such a memory hog at those version levels.

Yes, using this way restricts it to one partition, whereas using swapper allows it to use the FAT partition. This means, with this only your swap part will get corrupted over time, whereas with swapper your FAT will, losing your data.

Anyone able to overcome the +2 error? Using Umaro kernal on EliteMod CM7.
Code:
# sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
* Some tests.
/mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh: arith: syntax error: "65 on +2"
EDIT:
Probably something not being compatible either busybox or CM7 but I got it to work by doing the following after looking at the code in the swap_enabler.sh file.
Since it was "65 on + 2" I figured that the cut commands weren't being executed properly somewhere and that it should have been 65 + 2 = 67..... =)
in shell i typed swapon /dev/block/vold/179:67
and it worked. Of course I had to manually make an entry in init.d and test it =)....
Maybe this can help OP edit the code.

Why do you want to use swap on cm7. There are zero benefits. But there are disadvantages, it could affect battery life, performance and wear your sdcard out faster

It seems you have adb.exe tool already installed but you get error because you do not have enough rights on your phone so get the rights by these lines..
by terminal here I mean cmd.exe from Windows
so enter cmd Start/Run/cmd.exe
then to start adb server enter this
Code:
adb devices
then in cmd enter
"adb shell" press Enter (in fact this is "terminal" - a way to get access on your phone and enter commands)
then "su" press Enter
and so on..
Code:
adb shell
su
chmod 777 /efs/nv_data.bin
exit
exit
lastly enter
Code:
adb pull /efs/nv_data.bin
now you get nv_data.bin on your PC check for this file in the folder where adb.exe is located usually ~\android-sdk\platform-tools\adb.exe
You have the advantage of a well-known phone so there are solutions for everything
by example look here for a tutorial to unlock your phone
If you do not understand something let me know about
This is the case you want to work from scratch the easy way is to search on Market/ Google Play for an app to unlock this phone

After I have followed the instructions up to "steps 4" I am not sure what I should do for steps 5,6, and 7. I don`t know where "the main Samsung Galaxy S Unlocker" is.

I unlocked my SGS by using an app called Galaxy_S unlock by Helroz from the play store.
If it doesn't work try downgrading to froyo as I unlocked mine when I was on 2.2.

My sincere apologies to you my friend. I was able to unlocked my SGS after I followed your advice of downgrading to froyo and then I continued with the tutorial I got through Member ruscan.calin. So excess amount of thanks to you both. I will make sure to properly BACKUP my SGS3 before I touch it. I have learnt my lesson. Thanks again.

Hi,
You can unlock your Samsung Galaxy S I9000 using unlock codes!! Unlocking using codes is easy and also safe!! You can get the codes from your service provider or from reliable online sites!!!Personally, I would suggest prounlocking.com , here they provide accurate codes at reasonable price!!!

[GUIDE] Rooting your phone...from your phone [ALL US SGS3]

Rooting your phone...from your phone (what?!)
DISCLAIMER: I do not expect anything to go wrong as I have personally tested this. However, YOU are choosing to make these modifications to your phone so I DO NOT take responsibility for any damage that may come as a result of using this. If you come back and point the finger at me, I will laugh at you.
If your phone is not an SGS3, this MAY still work for you. I take absolutely NO responsibility either way.
Prerequisites
The following files are attached to this post for convenience. Download and install the apps, download and extract the zip file somewhere convenient.
Superuser by Koush(MUST be this one. You can change it later if you so desire.)
Terminal Emulator by Jack Palevich ( MUST be this one)
Zip file, extracted somewhere convenient

THE GOODS
These generic names will be used:
/path/to/motochopperDir - This is the full path to the extracted motochopper-mobile DIRECTORY or FOLDER. Example: /sdcard/motochopper-mobile (will vary depending on where you extracted the files).
NOTE: After running the script, Motochopper may or may not print "Failed", but the exploit DOES indeed work regardless of this. Make sure you reboot for changes to take effect.

Download the attached zip file AND both apps.
Install Terminal Emulator and Superuser (use a file manager, navigate to the downloaded .apk files and click on each file to install them).
Open up Terminal Emulator and type the following commands. Press the ENTER key after each command.
Code:
cd /path/to/motochopperDir
cat setup.sh > /data/data/jackpal.androidterm/setup.sh
cd /data/data/jackpal.androidterm
chmod 755 setup.sh
./setup.sh /path/to/motochopperDir
From there, my setup.sh script will handle the rest of the process. If you are still unsure, see my sample run below.
Sample run (files were extracted to /sdcard/moto)
Code:
cd /sdcard/moto
cat setup.sh > /data/data/jackpal.androidterm/setup.sh
cd /data/data/jackpal.androidterm
chmod 755 setup.sh
./setup.sh /sdcard/moto
Credits
Motochopper exploit by djrbliss (Dan Rosenburg). Original thread here.
Jack Palevich and Koush for their apps, especially Jack Palevich. This would not be possible without the shared permissions on his app's data directory.

No, it will not. That's the point, there's no need to use ODIN.
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Nothing more. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.
Not working on new ATT S3 I747
This tool is not working for me. I have tried several times. I always get a 'failed' msg.
I have a 2 day old brand new S3 i747 from ATT. Stock JB 4.1.1
I extracted the motochopper-mobile.zip files to /storage/sdcard0/moto/.
The setup.sh script is in the /data/data/jackpal.androidterm after it is run. The other moto related files are not there as if the script had run ok.
After the reboot superuser needs a new binary and fails when the binary update is attempted.
All other root sensitive apps fail.

FIXED:
I used the download/instructions on the OP on the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252248
While it does not do all the work from the S3 and must be loaded from a Windows environment , it did the job perfectly.
Flash counter, triangle etc. not triggered!!
Try downloading the files and run it again.
I tested it by deleting my su binary and then I ran this tool and rebooted. And BAM, su was placed in /system once again and superuser was fine.
If it still doesn't work, go to the original Motochopper thread and follow the instructions there using your computer.
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Nothing more. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.
Files are now attached to the OP.

This is too cool. Had no idea this was possible. Is it possible to post screenshots to help the really new members out? That's just a suggestion.

Yes, but so far I have only been able to confirm that it works on a couple Sprint phones...you can try it, but I can't guarantee that it will actually root your phone
It finely don't brick it though, if you're worried.

So i just tried following every single step but it wont allow for SU binaries to update. When i finished each line of code, it said FAILED and to reboot/battery pull which I did.. Not sure what to do. I was hoping it worked.. did I do something wrong? I even tried installing superuser from the app store and it wasnt updating binaries either.. TitaniumBackup didnt work...
I don't know. Just use the regular method of using ODIN to send a recovery and then flash SU :\

i think i did it couse terminal acepted all codes so i restarted and now superuser ask me to update su binary ?? am i done?? please help

If you extracted to that directory, then the command you need to run is "./setup.sh /storage/extsdcard/motochopperdir"
But first you need to do "cd /data/data/jackpal.androidterm" if you're not already in that directory.
