rom is one i was testing other day i just added this file to make use of prtition it works but fc at start up other than that seems ok,. just wanted a expert opinion.ta

Out of interest, does the rom have:
"/system/bin/e2fsck_recvy"
As per the script?

yep that files in there

OK. Is there a reason you're not going with data2sd like I suggested?

to be honest yeah. ive been banging my head against a door with it i just can get it to run. ive got the gingerbread rom rooted bloat free i just want the extra space. so how would i slap data2sd in it?

well the thing with data2sd (as per my link to the thread in your other thread) is that there is actually support from the developer in that thread still. Also Droidzone is there at hand to help too.
If you follow the data2sd instructions and get stuck, you're more likely to get through it that way.

ok i get u mate. problem i had with that one was at the chmod says not found.

You have to be in adb shell or a linux terminal of some kind to use chmod. Its a linux command, but if you're not in adb shell on a windows machine, you are simply in an ms dos command prompt, which does not recognise linux commands

i have the adbshell under windows sdk tools yeah?

Can be anywhere as long as you make sure cmd is set to try the same location. See faq in my signature

[Q] ADB Help

Ok so my friend rooted my phone and I've done alot but theres alot that I need ADB for..
so im looking for someone help
to provide a walkthrough of how to get ADB and SLIDE USB drivers and how to use it. to do this..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921347
step by step
please help..
Tossing a Couple Cold-Ones to whoever can help me
I don't have a step-by-step but maybe I can at least point you in a direction and get you the tools you need.
ADB will come from here:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Here's what I used to get the slide drivers, I believe:
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/
If someone's got an easier way, I'd like to know too, hehe.
---
If anything, at least download the SDK first.
Maybe someone will be kind enough to come in and help. If I've got time I'll see what I can do though.
EDIT: Also have you tried this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719

oh well i thanked u instead of quoting xD there is a free thanks for u then...
what are u running on your pc? osx? windows?
there is a couple of youtube videos you can check out like this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UF5w1dKe2U
and this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1qgKA_eT2g&feature=related
basically what you need is the android sdk, the drivers are included there and if you are using windows set an variable to the path of your sdk tools so you can just type adb in the cmd and launch it right away
edit: oh and for the data2ext thing, you need to do that in recovery right after u repartition your sdcard.
just go into recovery, plug the phone, type adb shell in the command prompt(after u get it to work) and then the whole line to make your ext partition block size 4kb ---> mke2fs -m0 -b4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
wait for the # to show up again and you are good to go ^_^
you just then need to reboot and type data2ext --enable in the terminal emulator app, hope this helps

[Q] " someone pls help very confused"

i have been reading up on getting s-off on so many threads. My situation is that i have had perm root since visionary r14 has been launched but i still do not have s-off. what do i need to do to get this done since im already perm rooted. i am missing out on all the roms and overclocking. i just want to take my phone to the next level. i have a desire z thats rooted but no s-off. realy appreciate this if anyone can point in the right direction.
you need android sdk from here
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
read this to learn how to use adb shell
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
then follow this, basically you need to gain super user access by temp rooting with visionairy (thats what i did) then push the files to the destinations given in the link below, then you just follow the rest and youll be fully unlocked, rooted and s-off'ed lol
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843014
if you get stuck report back but if you read up on adb you should be fine look at the stickies thread for more info, hope this helps thank me if it did!
Thanks very much I'm going to start reading up on adb. One quick queation. You mentioned that I will have to perform another temp root, does it matter that I am already perm rooted.? Do I have to unroot first using visionary one click unroot?

No need to temproot. Just follow the instructions in the Wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Unlock_the_Phone.2C_Set_SuperCID.2C_and_Turn_Radio_S-OFF.
You don't need ADB either. You can do everything in Terminal on your phone (though instead of pushing the file with ADB as instructed in the Wiki, you can stick the file on your SD card and then copy it to the correct location).
Wicked Thanks so much illgive it a go. I'll message back to let you know it worked. Thanks again.

yeah its probabally easier doing it ianmcquinn's way matey
but it wont hurt to learn adb if your into that sort of thing its quite fun!
anyway if ya get stuch just post back, someone will be here to help
Good Luck!
remember when you have s-off, get rom manager from the market and get the premium one cus its always nice to donate
then download clockwork mod from rom manager ! you can perform nandroid backups and all sorts of coool stuff!
hi ianmcquinn you mentioned to stick the gfree file in my sd card and then copying it to the location. im not sure in which location your talking about. i tried using the commands thru the phones terminal but when i type chmod 777 gfree it tells me "unable to chmod gfree no such file directory".? do i have to make a folder chmod gfree and stick the files in there ?
su
cd /data/local
chmod 777 gfree
./gfree -f
sync
thanks for your time everyone. i really feel that im close and im just missing a step.
just setup adb and i got s-off :0
thanks very much for posting these threads now its time to play with my desire z. overclocking here we come and some new roms

htc desire gsm keeps restarting

hi my htc desire keeps restarting when i flash any gingerbread miui rom i have tired data2ext and a2sd and have wiped and also formated my sdcard and stil have same problem with both but it works fine with all other roms and the froyo version of miui. please help
What hboot are you using and how did you root your phone?
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
hi im using normal hboot-0.93.0001 i used unrevoked to root my phone i am not really a noob i have flashed and rooted many phones but for some strange reason all other roms including miui froyo work on my phone but gingerbread miui wont it loads up to the home screen and then just reboots ive tried data2et version and a2sd version and same thing happens with both versions.i have also tried using diffrent recoverys amon-ra,clockwork etc and still get the same problem.
You need to understand what is going on under the hood.. Getting an adb logcat is the way to go..
Code:
Windows>Start>Run
echo "null" > log.txt
start log.txt
adb logcat > log.txt
Use Notepad++ to associate with the txt file and reload the file every couple of seconds while keeping the cmd shell in the background.. See what's happening just before it reboots. It could be anything from a bad script to a bad module
Have you tried gingerbread 2.8, its simple and a very plain ROM, I have had issues with miui roms with my desire, if that doesn't work I will keep looking my self, sorry I'm not very insightful, you have an odd problem.

Once you open a command line prompt in the folder where adb is installed (or anywhere else, if the file adb.exe is in your Windows path variable-Dont worry about that if you dont know), you can directly type each line of the commands starting from step 2.
Before that, install Notepad+, and associate .txt file to open with it by default..
By the way, you have to start typing those commands directly after rebooting from recovery after installing the Rom..
hi droidzone i have installed notepad++ but dont understand how to install Notepad+, and associate .txt file to open with it by default. also my adb is located in c:\androidsdk\tools that is what i type in cmd to get adb working and if i type adb devices it shows my device.also i typed the commands u gave me once in adb and it says "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Hmm.. I seem to be offering more Windows support than Android!
I meant Notepad+. Hold Shift, rightclick any text file, Choose Open with Notepad+ as default. You can go to your adb folder like you normally do and then type each line I posted and hit Enter after each time. You can also make a batch file with all those commands (search Google for that if you dont know how)
hi thanks i have made notepad+ to open as default but when i type the commands u told me it says "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Hmm yes, that can happen if you have more than one adb.exe process running in the background because you exited it by closing the command shell with the close button instead of typing
Code:
exit
after done with it.
Use Ctrl+Alt+Del or Process Explorer to terminate the background adb.exe processes

what happened when you tried to get temproot with zergrush?
was the phone in charge only mode? It needs be to write a backup file to the sdcard.
the < waiting for device > error is because the fastboot driver is not installed or there is contention with some program.
i missed a step; updated code above:
prerequisite: adb and fastboot fully working.

[GUIDE] Setting Up and Activating SWAP Partition Without Breaking USB Mass Storage

Okay, many of you complain about USB MASS STORAGE not working with swap enabled. So heres a guide, using CWM (latest version) to set it up with working USB.
NEEDED:
MicroSD (i use class 4 sandisk 8gb)
Root+Busybox
CWM Recovery* (see post 2 for reasons of the *)
Terminal Emulator/ADB
Download this file http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1169731/swap_enabler.sh and place it IN THE ROOT OF YOUR SD!!!
Precautionary:BACKUP EVERYTHING ON MICRO SD CARD.
Steps:
Making the partition
Make sure you have everything backed up, as this WILL wipe your SD.
Boot into clockworkmod recovery.
Go to Advanced->Partition SD Card->EXT and Swap. I chose 128mb for EXT and 256 for SWAP.
Activating Through ADB
Make sure you downloaded that file earlier.
Type this into the CMD:
Code:
adb shell
chmod 755 /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
And reboot
When your phone has rebooted, go back into ADB, and type:
Code:
adb shell
free
and if you didnt not get 0's next to SWAP, it worked.
Activating through Terminal Emulator
Load up Terminal Emulator
Type in this:
Code:
su
chmod 755 /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
reboot. when your phones has booted back up, load terminal emulator once more, and type:
Code:
su
free
and if there isnt a bunch of 0's next to SWAP, it worked
And thats that!
Enjoy
TO DISABLE THROUGH ADB:
adb shell (skip if you're already in adb shell)
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh disable
Click to collapse
TO DISABLE THROUGH TERMINAL EMUALTOR
su
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh disable
Click to collapse
NEW QUICK EASY WAY (HIT AND MISS)
1) download script manager from the market
2) run swap_enabler.sh with script manager
3) reboot
SPECIAL THANKS TO: Nv for the script, and cimer for the original guide.
also, thanks to cjward for reminding me to put in the thanks ;D
* this guide is for CWM recovery, as the steps for 4EXT may be different. Also, when i tried to do it with 4EXT, it never activated the swap partition correctly.
Man, I've been trying to get this right. Think I messed up because I did not restart after running the script, so when I did the free command I got them zeros.

The 8GB one that came standard with the G2 in the US, Dec 2010. If you need me to take it out and confirm what kind, I will, because this something I want to learn how to do. Also, I tried it with the ILWT Rom. I was trying to get to to work because I wanted to flash that Virtuous 3.5
PS - Anyone have a better method for backing up the SD card besides creating a folder on the desktop and dragging everything in there?
when i type su in terminal emulator I get
"[1] + Stopped (signal)"
I'm now getting a +2 error.
This is mildly frustrating because it seems so easy. I've learned several other processes to do to my phone, and THIS is the one that I get hung up on?
Latest debacle:
I wipe using G2+Superwipe. Make partitions of 128 and 256. Sdcard goes completely blank, so I have to mount it in recovery, and load up a nandroid. I figure, its still all good, go through with it. So I run the commands in Terminal Emulator and get the +2 error. damn damn damn

well, new SDK is giving me problems setting up on my mac. Now you have to use SDK manager, which says to run 'android' file, and when I do it gives me an error just as its about to finish setting up.
Ugh, I want this to happen.

This I would also like to know! Thx!
While I can't be 100%, I would say that it wouldn't help you much at all, on any CM based ROMs. Just the ones that are RAM intensive (i.e., sense roms). I know that I only want it to run the Virtuous 3.5 ROM.
Can anyone tell me is there a difference between doing it this way, or just using the app "swapper for root" from the app market..?
Thanks
Thought I would pop in. Doing it via terminal does not normally work you need to do it via ADB. If you're unfamiliar with ADB please go to here: http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/ and learn about it. It can be such a useful tool. You do not need swap for CM7,MIUI, or Sense 2.1. It can be needed for Sense 3.0 or Sense 3.5 because Sense is such a memory hog at those version levels.

Yes, using this way restricts it to one partition, whereas using swapper allows it to use the FAT partition. This means, with this only your swap part will get corrupted over time, whereas with swapper your FAT will, losing your data.

Anyone able to overcome the +2 error? Using Umaro kernal on EliteMod CM7.
Code:
# sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
sh /mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh
* Some tests.
/mnt/sdcard/swap_enabler.sh: arith: syntax error: "65 on +2"
EDIT:
Probably something not being compatible either busybox or CM7 but I got it to work by doing the following after looking at the code in the swap_enabler.sh file.
Since it was "65 on + 2" I figured that the cut commands weren't being executed properly somewhere and that it should have been 65 + 2 = 67..... =)
in shell i typed swapon /dev/block/vold/179:67
and it worked. Of course I had to manually make an entry in init.d and test it =)....
Maybe this can help OP edit the code.

Why do you want to use swap on cm7. There are zero benefits. But there are disadvantages, it could affect battery life, performance and wear your sdcard out faster
