I'm going to throw my EVO against the wall... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Luckily it is wearing a Seidio Rugged.
Just pulled a brand new EVO out of the box TODAY about 2 hours ago. I followed EVERY single direction STEP BY STEP with no equivocations.
[GUIDE] How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G from the Cyanogen wiki.
Uninstalled sync, ect ect ect. Phone is set to charge only, USB Debugging enabled, Driver installed (re-downloaded, uninstalled and reinstalled driver twice and rebooted machine).
I'm getting absolutely beyond frustrated right now, especially since a google and XDA search shows NOTHING on my issue, except maybe one or 2 people asking about it then going "lol fixeeeed lol" without providing a solution.
I run the reflash.exe with my device plugged in, set to charge only with debugging enabled. The device automatically reboots, goes into the bootloader and I go down to HBOOT. Once I do that, reflash does it's thing, the phone reboots and reflash says "Waiting for reboot"
After that, it says something like "Flashing ect, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE" and almost immediately, reflash.exe crashes in windows 7 and says "reflash.exe has stopped working". I have rebooted the phone, the computer, uninstalled and reinstalled the driver..I'm at a complete loss.
the EVO is sitting on 2.1 per the instructions in that guide and i'm stuck. No matter what I do, administrator mode, reflash.exe crashes at the same exact point and the EVO just boots back into 2.1. Please help.

umm, try looking in the post just below you

So the new HBOOT disabled all previous methods is what I'm gathering...amazing. I finally give up my perfectly working DROID for an EVO to find out I can't do **** with it.

Hey borob,
I suggest you google "evo unrevoked". I got mine yesterday and it worked straight away.

You got lucky and probably got one off the shelf that had been there a week or two because the latest HBOOT doesn't work with the methods currently available.

I used unrevoked on 2.2 w/ XP though, not one problem at all

How can i go back to default?

I tried the "IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide! NAND Unlock and ADB Update!!".... to no avail.
I had fallowed the instructions to a tee and around step 55 it all went down hill, it was supposed to automatically flash a ROM and it did nothing, and now i have probably screwed it up worse. Phone is still 100% functional but i would like to reset back to factory settings, no root, no nand, no custom rooted ROMS, nothing.
Does anyone know of a way to get my phone back to the way it was when i walked out of Best Buy earlier today?
Thanks for the help and all the great resources here at XDA.
Daugusta.
Search for and run the RUU
Step 55? Thats the idiot proof guide? I followed the original guides and there were like 10 steps max..
Haha, could i snag a link to the guide you used? also, where can i find this RUU?
Thanks.

This is not flashed, its an exe so its run while your phone is plugged in. Should go smoothly, but as always know the risks of flashing anything
I've heard toasts method is pretty solid for rooting.
Quick question wouldn't this be in Q & A? Not trying to come off as a jerk. Just my 2 cents

RUU Is not working, i get it to start, it restarts my phone and then sits their at a black screen that says "HTC" Then the program says "Waiting for boot loader" and counts to like 75 and then errors saying that it cannot connect to the phone. I then tried to start the process, pull the battery, then manually put it into the boot loader and the program never recognizes it.
Anyone else have another idea, or a way to get this working?
Thanks,
Daugusta
I believe you have to use HTC sync when you run it, though I could be mistaken. Search YouTube, there's a video of it somewhere. I wouldn't give up on rooting just yet though.
Trust me im not giving up
Try the 1-click Root Method
I looked at the fifty-five step root method and peed my pants, then I hit up jiqqaman's one-click root method. Stable root, and you can flash the stock (rooted) rom.

When I have ran an rru from previous HTC phones I have had to have sync up. But then again its never been at a black screen

Ya, i had the HTC sync running as well, synced up fine with my comp but the RUU still gave me the same error.
Im running this on Win 7 64 Bit, im guessing the 64 bit may be the problem. ill try it on a different comp and see how it goes.
Just tried it on a 32 bit Windows 7 comp, still same issues.
Sucks man, coming from the iphone world this rooting stuff seems a hell of a lot more complicated. The last jailbreak I did on my 3GS I downloaded 1 program, plugged by phone into the PC, clicked 1 button and bam!
This andriod root stuff is waaaaay more difficult, NAND this, bootloader that, recovery this, RUU that, adb this, zip and flashing all kinds of stuff. Wish there was a simpler method. Im obviously a noob so Im sure it will get easier with time.

It should work. After the program doesn't recognize it, while your phone is at the HTC logo. Close the program on your pc and start it again.

There shouldn't be any problems caused by 64-bit OS. I used Win7 Ult 64-bit and it worked fine. Do you have the HTC Sync drivers? That may fix the problems you have.

I noted this too, only I didn't have an iPhone, just an iPod Touch. Despite this, I am having a lot more fun with Android and how it works. I.E. *.9.pngs which made made jaw drop when I understood how it works. SO AMAZING.
I don't think I will ever be much of a dev, but who knows. I have been digging through a TON of documentation over the past 2-3 weeks.
Thread moved to Q&A.
well I'm pretty much over this rooting business. Ill wait for the official froyo update from Sprint/HTC and not worry about this crap, no camera, instability, bricking, etc. Guess I'm not much of an android hacker and the phone works pretty well bone stock.
Here are my questions...and please explain this to me like I am mentally retarded haha...
For returning my phone to bone stock, Like Day 1, same as it was when I walked out of Sprint store...
1) download .exe file from post #1 onto my PC
2) plug EVO into USB on PC (run in USB debug mode?)
3) Run .exe file while EVO is in Andriod
4) Select yes, yes, blah, blah and it will do its thing automatically?
Is this correct? Some have mentioned I need to download HTC sync onto PC. Yes - No? Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully someone can comment THAT HAS ACTUALLY DONE THIS and not just guessing/speculation can assist.

Great question.. Some of these long winded threads need trimming and a definite answer listed out. Clutter = confusion

I can not get ANY unroot method to work.

I need to return my phone because the earphone speaker is whacked out but I have spent the last couple hours trying to unroot it and NOTHING is working...
First I tried HTC Sync on my computer, and I get the Error [171]: USB Connecetion Error
Then I tried HTC sync on my bros computer (since I have unrooted using his laptop before with no problems) and I get a different error saying something about i have the wrong version of data utility updater or whatever.
I spent the last couple hours googleing both errors and looking for fixes, but for some reason I could not get any of them to work. I am as frustrated as can be rite now, and any help would be greatly appreciated....
I'd prefer some sort of "dumbed down" step by step process rather than being sent to a another link, because chances are I have tried that method already and I couldn't get it to work...
I also can not get adb shell to work. I installed the sdk, but it still wont show up...
any help from anybody will be greatly appreciated...
try applying the current over the air update. That took root away for many if I remember correctly.
did you enable USB debuging?
I tried searching for the ota's but they're not showing up.
also I am running dc 3.2 currently, which has debugging mode auto-enabled I believe.
So you tried using a stock rom from here to get your phone unrooted?
If you download one of those stock RUU roms it will be an exe file that will automatically install the rom to your phone...is this what you are saying isn't working?
Have you tried doing a full wipe/clear before running anything?
I had the same error when I was unrooting mine. I just unplugged the Evo while it still had the boot loader screen then ran the stock RUU. Worked like a charm.
yes. I tried installing the shipped RUU using HTC Sync, but sync keeps ****ting out on me and giving me errors. My only option seems to be unrooting my phone without using htc sync. But I have tried a couple of the methods e found, but none of them had detailed enough instructions for me to make them work....
I'v literally spent the majority of my day trying to unroot this damn phone and its driving me crazy.... I don't know wth the problem is.. I unrooted a previous EVO before, now it seems hopeless /:

I'd find you the link but I'm at work right now but someone has a fix for that error. Basically I got that error whenever I tried to run the stock RUU and when the phone had the bootloader screen up I just took out the USB cable, stuck it back in, and then ran the RUU again.

Well...I guess I missed that one when I was tooling around, so I wrote my own. You're right. It clearly mentions needing the proper HBOOT, which I found was the key.. But it doesn't mention how to UN ROOT after you "Start Over." It's basically the same thing though...Cheers...

When I place the PC zip file on my sd card and then boot into Hboot, it fails to recognize the card.
I used simple root to root my phone and I am running the .79 Hboot.
I'm trying to follow your instructions but I am about ready to throw this god dam phone at the wall and use insurance to get another one

You have the wrong H Boot. See here: http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7471721#post7471721
Should work on any .79 HBOOT in theory, but you have to change it to the .76 one before the RUU or the zip step you are having trouble with. Do Toast's step two which is found in the thread linked above.

[Q] Drivers for root possibly corrupted?

So I had to take my EVO in to get replaced today for screen issues. Got the new one home, same 004, 3.30 versions. Fire up UnrEVOked3 and away I go!
First time I got Internal error: Couldn't find misc.
So, I looked around and didn't really find any useful answers, so I formatted my SD card, popped into the OS to make a quick phone call and then ran UnrEVOked again. This time it says "This was a triumph." However S-ON is still listed in the boot loader.
So I make ABSOLUTELY certain that my driver is still there in the 3 minutes I didn't check it. Instead of saying Android Bootloader Interface or whatever it said a few minutes ago, it now says "Android Composite ADB Interface". I have NO clue what this is, and there's only 3 threads or so even mentioning it. I tried uninstallling and reinstalling the driver, but I get the same thing..
Any suggestions on how I can get this to work? I really want to root this thing, lol.
Im looking to root my phone as well and I read alot before I take on this kind of thing... I have read in several places, your version can't be rooted "yet"... Google your software version along with your hboot... See if any one can do it yet
Sent from the MATRIX... while plugged into my EVO... using the XDA app... from a galaxy far-far away.......
That's the thing. My previous phone was the same hardware and software version. It should work.
The only thing that has changed is the driver in the device manager.
Unrevoked can not be used on your phone to root it you have to use a defferent method. check your hboot, is it 2.02??? If it is go in the developers section and look for the rooting with hboot 2.02 Like a Boss post and follow the directions.

Rooting trouble.

I tried to search through forums and not finding anything helpfull.
I have 2.2 on my incredible. At first when I tried to root with unrevoked it would do the first reboot and then say waiting for reboot. Then it would breifly say something like waiting to settle then give me a error about lost communication and try again.
I tried a couple of times and same issue. Then after coming back to try about 2 hours later, I can't run the program any more. I get a unexpected error. Any ideas on how to fix both issues?
I followed the guide and uninstalled those programs that it listed. And installed the drivers that it needed.
do you have the latest version of unrevoked?
I do or at least I think I do. I went to their page and got it directly from them.
I got the program running again, guess my comp needed to be turned off for awhile. But I still get comm lost unexpectedly with phone error.
I can hear the usb sound being played for something being connected and disconnected. Any ideas on how to stop that?
If you ever had HTC sync installed on your pc there are two apps that need to be uninstalled. Both are called HTC 'something'. Go to Add/Remove programs and make sure both are gone.
Also, did you read the unrevoked faq? There are other programs that can cause problems if installed on your pc.

Rooting with unrevoked. Getting a communication error?

Ive got the latest version of unrevoked downloded and have rooted plenty of evos including many of the new ones with the 3.7 software. I tryd one today and i got the message unrevoked successfully complete. Then when rebooting it gos to the message waiting for response then i keep getting the messace communication error root interrupted. What could cause this

Is your cable bad? You should unplug the usb from the computer, reboot your phone. Then once the phone is rebooted, leave it on the home screen, with usb debugging enabled and on charge only, and try again. Worked for me on my first time. Also try the lastest unrevoked, its up to like 3.3.2 or something like that.
The cables workin fine. Like i said it gos through the whole process. I have the newest unrevoked also. Its something with this particular phone

You could have a program on your computer interrupting. You need to be sure that any program on you computer that could communicate to the phone via USB is either uninstalled, or completely disabled while using Unrevoked. These things could be things like PDAnet, Easytether, Dropbox, any music syncing software you may use, computer's antivirus, HTC sync, etc. So basically, be sure that there is nothing other than Unrevoked that could possibly communicate with your phone whilst attempting root, then try it again. Also, be 100% sure that you have the correct hboot drivers installed, though I'm sure you do since you've used Unrevoked before. Just throwing out ideas...

Like I said, I don't think its the phone because I've had this similar problem before. The only thing that worked for me was just re-trying unrevoked a couple of times. Or you could try re-downloading the software; that also worked for me.
Ok i appreciate it. I definitely have the correct software bc my girlfriends sister came straight to me a week ago with a evo fresh out of bestbuy and it rooted fine. I will redownload unrevoked 3 just incase and will also make sure nothing else is running on my laptop

Cool, hopefully you get it going. Good luck.
The program hangs when “waiting for the system to settle.” -OR- the program says “Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted.”

One suggestion is to start over from the beginning. Remove the hboot files from your computer; remove any unrevoked files from your computer as well as any unrevoked .apk files from your phone. Clear the temp. folder on your computer. Reboot the phone and your computer. Download HTC sync and then remove it leaving the HTC Drivers on the computer only. Reboot the computer again. Next, re-download the hboot drivers and the latest unrevoked onto your computer. Make sure USB Debugging and Charge Only are selected on your phone. Turn off your antivirus/firewall on your computer and root as usual.
