I can not get ANY unroot method to work. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need to return my phone because the earphone speaker is whacked out but I have spent the last couple hours trying to unroot it and NOTHING is working...
First I tried HTC Sync on my computer, and I get the Error [171]: USB Connecetion Error
Then I tried HTC sync on my bros computer (since I have unrooted using his laptop before with no problems) and I get a different error saying something about i have the wrong version of data utility updater or whatever.
I spent the last couple hours googleing both errors and looking for fixes, but for some reason I could not get any of them to work. I am as frustrated as can be rite now, and any help would be greatly appreciated....
I'd prefer some sort of "dumbed down" step by step process rather than being sent to a another link, because chances are I have tried that method already and I couldn't get it to work...
I also can not get adb shell to work. I installed the sdk, but it still wont show up...
any help from anybody will be greatly appreciated...

try applying the current over the air update. That took root away for many if I remember correctly.

did you enable USB debuging?

I tried searching for the ota's but they're not showing up.
also I am running dc 3.2 currently, which has debugging mode auto-enabled I believe.

So you tried using a stock rom from here to get your phone unrooted?
If you download one of those stock RUU roms it will be an exe file that will automatically install the rom to your phone...is this what you are saying isn't working?
Have you tried doing a full wipe/clear before running anything?

I had the same error when I was unrooting mine. I just unplugged the Evo while it still had the boot loader screen then ran the stock RUU. Worked like a charm.

yes. I tried installing the shipped RUU using HTC Sync, but sync keeps ****ting out on me and giving me errors. My only option seems to be unrooting my phone without using htc sync. But I have tried a couple of the methods e found, but none of them had detailed enough instructions for me to make them work....
I'v literally spent the majority of my day trying to unroot this damn phone and its driving me crazy.... I don't know wth the problem is.. I unrooted a previous EVO before, now it seems hopeless /:

I'd find you the link but I'm at work right now but someone has a fix for that error. Basically I got that error whenever I tried to run the stock RUU and when the phone had the bootloader screen up I just took out the USB cable, stuck it back in, and then ran the RUU again.

Well...I guess I missed that one when I was tooling around, so I wrote my own. You're right. It clearly mentions needing the proper HBOOT, which I found was the key.. But it doesn't mention how to UN ROOT after you "Start Over." It's basically the same thing though...Cheers...

When I place the PC zip file on my sd card and then boot into Hboot, it fails to recognize the card.
I used simple root to root my phone and I am running the .79 Hboot.
I'm trying to follow your instructions but I am about ready to throw this god dam phone at the wall and use insurance to get another one

You have the wrong H Boot. See here: http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7471721#post7471721
Should work on any .79 HBOOT in theory, but you have to change it to the .76 one before the RUU or the zip step you are having trouble with. Do Toast's step two which is found in the thread linked above.

I have an Evo on 2.1 loaded with Fresh and I want to unroot as I have light a LOT of light leakage. Te people at RS have a new Evo for me that I am supposed to pick up in the morning and I have ran both RRs ( RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253 and RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.6_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253) and all I keep getting on both my laptop and desktop is an error after aboutn 15 minutes of the verifying android screen:
Error [170]: USB CONNECTION ERROR
This ROM update Utility cannot connect to your android phone. Please check that the USB cable is connected properly between the PC and your android phone.
I have to get this thing unrooted and I am sorry if I missed the answer as I have searched for it.
Thanks
honestly even if you dont get it unrooted, do you think RS is really going to notice that you rooted it? i mean id try to unroot it too, but if you dont get it done in time, i wouldnt worry about it. it's not like you are sending it back to HTC for service. from my experience in returning things, rarely do they even check to see if the item is in the box!

Make sure you have HTC Sync installed on your computer. Pull the curtain down where you choose Charge Only, Disk Drive etc.. choose HTC Sync. Listen for the USB sound, start installation of the Stock ROM. sha-bam!
Here is a vid. Once you watch it you will realize how easy it really is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBu6GsRZMdI
if it says USB connection error, you probably are already RUU'd. if it does that, let the phone boot up, it should be fully RUU'd, and check the build and version in settings>about phone. if it still shows fresh, or whatever you do, try putting your phone in fastboot before RUUing. hold down volume while pressing power button, and select fastboot. then run the RUU.
but if the RUU runs for 15 minutes before giving you the error, i'm pretty sure you're already set.
if that doesnt work, go into bootloader mode
and run the .exe for the RUU
power+vol up
Yea fat chance. Rs people will nowots rooted

I seriously doubt it. I've seen some of the 'sales associates' at RS. Best Buy, yes. RS....doubtful.
If anything look for the update.zip version of the RUU and flash that through recovery. Then run the original RUU.exe and it should work.

Download the factory Rom and put it in your card and flash from there, if not you can always try wipe the data and Davlik cache and it will boot up...from there you can run the RUU...hope this works.

Yeah, the only problem is I thought that when RS returned it to HTC they would figure it out and I heard that they might charge me full price for the phone
well I am not sure what happened. I followed that video word for word and now it has been stuck on the htc screen for 10 minutes
OK so I had to take out the battery to get it working again and when it booted it it said "fresh!" so it is still rooted and running that ROM.
It never made it past the htc screen as all of the sudden that same window came up that there was a usb connection error.
i checked my phone info and i am indeed running fresh. It also told me that when I was in the process of using the RUU.
I used [TUTORIAL] IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide! NAND Unlock and ADB Update!! BUt I used it before the NAND Unlock and ADB Update I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
ok step by step real quick:
Installed HTC Sync.
Plugged phone in and chose HTC Sync
Ran RUU
Current info: Image Version Fresh
Clicked Update
From Version Fresh to 1.32.651.1
clicked Next
Rebooting to bootloader screen / HTC splash screen

ugh. any ideas?
Hmmmm. I just found this post on another site:
I have done it 2x's and this worked both times. I tried to install the original Sprint Rom with the file provided here. Each time it stopped at the black HTC screen. All that needs to be done is to re-try the install of the original sprint Rom when it is at the black HTC screen. When the installation program says it can't complete and closes (wait for that to happen) just double click on the install program again (while you are at the black HTC screen (don't unplug from your computer)). When you try the install the second time at the black HTC screen, a green progres bar shows up on said screen and will show you the install progress. Hope this helps

and it worked. Thanks all!

How can i go back to default?

I tried the "IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide! NAND Unlock and ADB Update!!".... to no avail.
I had fallowed the instructions to a tee and around step 55 it all went down hill, it was supposed to automatically flash a ROM and it did nothing, and now i have probably screwed it up worse. Phone is still 100% functional but i would like to reset back to factory settings, no root, no nand, no custom rooted ROMS, nothing.
Does anyone know of a way to get my phone back to the way it was when i walked out of Best Buy earlier today?
Thanks for the help and all the great resources here at XDA.
Daugusta.
Search for and run the RUU
Step 55? Thats the idiot proof guide? I followed the original guides and there were like 10 steps max..
Haha, could i snag a link to the guide you used? also, where can i find this RUU?
Thanks.

This is not flashed, its an exe so its run while your phone is plugged in. Should go smoothly, but as always know the risks of flashing anything
I've heard toasts method is pretty solid for rooting.
Quick question wouldn't this be in Q & A? Not trying to come off as a jerk. Just my 2 cents

RUU Is not working, i get it to start, it restarts my phone and then sits their at a black screen that says "HTC" Then the program says "Waiting for boot loader" and counts to like 75 and then errors saying that it cannot connect to the phone. I then tried to start the process, pull the battery, then manually put it into the boot loader and the program never recognizes it.
Anyone else have another idea, or a way to get this working?
Thanks,
Daugusta
I believe you have to use HTC sync when you run it, though I could be mistaken. Search YouTube, there's a video of it somewhere. I wouldn't give up on rooting just yet though.
Trust me im not giving up
Try the 1-click Root Method
I looked at the fifty-five step root method and peed my pants, then I hit up jiqqaman's one-click root method. Stable root, and you can flash the stock (rooted) rom.

Ya, i had the HTC sync running as well, synced up fine with my comp but the RUU still gave me the same error.
Im running this on Win 7 64 Bit, im guessing the 64 bit may be the problem. ill try it on a different comp and see how it goes.
Just tried it on a 32 bit Windows 7 comp, still same issues.
Sucks man, coming from the iphone world this rooting stuff seems a hell of a lot more complicated. The last jailbreak I did on my 3GS I downloaded 1 program, plugged by phone into the PC, clicked 1 button and bam!
This andriod root stuff is waaaaay more difficult, NAND this, bootloader that, recovery this, RUU that, adb this, zip and flashing all kinds of stuff. Wish there was a simpler method. Im obviously a noob so Im sure it will get easier with time.

It should work. After the program doesn't recognize it, while your phone is at the HTC logo. Close the program on your pc and start it again.

There shouldn't be any problems caused by 64-bit OS. I used Win7 Ult 64-bit and it worked fine. Do you have the HTC Sync drivers? That may fix the problems you have.

I noted this too, only I didn't have an iPhone, just an iPod Touch. Despite this, I am having a lot more fun with Android and how it works. I.E. *.9.pngs which made made jaw drop when I understood how it works. SO AMAZING.
I don't think I will ever be much of a dev, but who knows. I have been digging through a TON of documentation over the past 2-3 weeks.
Thread moved to Q&A.
well I'm pretty much over this rooting business. Ill wait for the official froyo update from Sprint/HTC and not worry about this crap, no camera, instability, bricking, etc. Guess I'm not much of an android hacker and the phone works pretty well bone stock.
Here are my questions...and please explain this to me like I am mentally retarded haha...
For returning my phone to bone stock, Like Day 1, same as it was when I walked out of Sprint store...
1) download .exe file from post #1 onto my PC
2) plug EVO into USB on PC (run in USB debug mode?)
3) Run .exe file while EVO is in Andriod
4) Select yes, yes, blah, blah and it will do its thing automatically?
Is this correct? Some have mentioned I need to download HTC sync onto PC. Yes - No? Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully someone can comment THAT HAS ACTUALLY DONE THIS and not just guessing/speculation can assist.

Need to unroot

Hey guys I need to unroot and i am trying the shipped RUU and I always get two failures ( not hooked up USB, or battery below 30%)
is there a ROM here I can flash that would remove root? I cannot check the wiki due to it being down
If you are going to unroot you need to run the RUU. Just plug it into the charger for a while. Also make sure HTC Sync is installed on your PC. Hope that helps
Sent via the Sprint HTC EVO
yeah i got sync on now, had to uninstall droid explorer to get things going but it still does not flash the unrooted imgine
Hmm... at what point does the RUU error out?
Sent via the Sprint HTC EVO
What RUU are you using?
I can not find a true factory shipped from for my evo, I'm wanting to do the exact same thing the OP is trying to do, no luck in finding an untouched stock rom. Goin crazy over here!
Maybe I am misunderstanding. Do you just want a ROM that is stock with no root access? That will not get rid of the NAND unlock. Just super user access. You would still be able to boot into recovery I believe.

it now times out and shoots back a "incorrect bootloader" I assume its because i'm on 1.45 and trying to the stock release one

I'm assuming you've been able to connect it before? to get rooted? using adb?
If so, I had the same problem, and actually had to reboot my computer. For some reason the dang usb drive just stopped working. Rebooted computer and it connected.

Replacement EVO has the OTA...

compliments of the local repair center.
Needless to say, I'm not rooted. What's my options?
Unfortunately for you, you have to wait until a root method is available for the newest firmware. Or find someone with an evo that hasn't taken the ota update, and doesn't care about rooting and trade phones
Vinchenzop, I don't mean to steal someone's thread with this question but it looks like you answered his question with what might just be the answer to mine so I'll ask it here. I think (I know) I did something very stupid yesterday after I uploaded to 2.3.3 on my rooted phone. I did it from here, not the official update and when I was done I know I was still rooted because I restored everything with Titanium backup. Well, seems Titanium on the auto backup didn't back everything up every night like I set and some of the backups missed data or some programs just weren't there so I did a restore of my programs from My Backup Pro. Something in there must've unrooted me because now when I open Titanium it says, after the request for approval to use it pops up, Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again.
When I open Wireless tether it says it's been granted superuser permission but then says unable to start tethering, is your devise rooted?
Help please.
If you have s-off in bootloader you're still rooted. Try going to recovery and flashing this superuser fix/reboot and your permissions should work again.

dirkyd3rk, I just noticed my response and it was for anyone else having the problem that I had. I just wanted to say the response was meant to say that I downloaded the file you mentioned above which eventually is the reason I was able to get back my root. I just needed the one more step I listed above about going back into recovery after doing your instructions and that is when I saw the option to "Reset Permissions" which I never saw before your fix and that did the final trick. Thank you so much again.
p.s. I had to delete your link above because I do not have enough posts but all those who might need it can see it in your original response to me.

this thread says there isnt a way to root with latest OTA. But the read first thread under Q&A says that my build is supported.
So i followed the instructions under xHausx guide and im getting stuck.
When i run my autoroot.bat file as administrator it opens up dos prompt and says
'res\ini.cmd' is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
ERROR Cannot load init file! Make sure you extract everything out of the zip!
I downloaded the autoroot 2.5 file through the mirror linked on the guide and extracted it. I have HTC sync 2.0.35. (i know there is a new version 3.0 available but as it just came out yesterday i am assuming that the version is not needed for this method)
Debugging is checked
Phone was in charging mode
Any thoughts?
Im trying not to get discouraged. This is what happens when you let someone else root it the first time and dont pay attention.
I think i posted almost all details that i could think of.

Ok, posting in this thread bc its the closest subject to what i have going on.
I got my evo replaced last night for antenna issues. Old one had Fresh on it, and i want it back.

Your phone luckily wasn't updated to the 2.3 OTA, so you can still root it. I have no experience with the Autoroot method, so unfortunately I cannot help you there. I can recommend using unrevoked instead to root your phone.
You'll need to uninstall HTC Sync, and download the modified drivers from the unrevoked site & install them. Download the latest version (I believe it's called reflashpackage.exe once it downloaded). Everything else you should already have covered - debugging on, charge only, etc. There are video walkthroughs of unrevoked on YouTube, if that helps you.
Once you've installed the drivers, plugged the phone in, and started unrevoked, it should only take about five minutes or so. The phone will reboot a couple of times, wait for it to say "done", then you're rooted. Unrevoked installs ClockworkMod, if you'd rather use Amon Ra you can get it from Rom Manager or from xda.
I'm sure that Autoroot is a great program, I just don't have experience with it. I've rooted with unrevoked once, and it was the easiest process I've seen for fully rooting/nand unlock.
Good luck!
...oh, and don't restore any nandroid backups from your old phone. User apps backed up with Titanium are fine, but nandroid backups are a baaaad idea.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Uninstall HTC sync would be my first thought...then start again with just the usb drivers.
Thanks, gonna try that method now. What better way to spend an evening right???
LOL
Ok.
Followed the instructions on Unrevoked.
Downloaded unrevoked 3.
installed drivers.
restarted phone,
opened unrevoked 3.
Program ran, then kicked off error “Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?"
Looked up a few forums that says boot to bootloader and clear storage.
While doing this i noticed it says S-Off now.
Cleared storage, rebooted and ran unrevoked. It went through its little speal and rebooted the phone a few times.
now unrevoked says "done" However, i still have stock HTC Sense.

Ok, so i found a thread that suggested downloading root checker.
it says i have root access.
So if im thinking correctly i just need to install a rom that i like?

Ya...depending on what was imaged in the process, you will probably have a stock rom installed afterwards. I've done two EVO's (004) in the last day using this:
http://www.multiupload.com/HSWSV16NU0
when you are done..your will have a stock rooted sense.
But it sounds like you got through everything well, so no need to redo anything..happy flashing?
I still haven't got my replacement, apparently EVOs are backordered. I told the Sprint store to NOT update it to gingerbread. Told them I use Netflix too often and to leave it alone They said no problem.

I did notice when I picked the one up for my son yesterday at Best Buy, they were updated the two customers before me. Did the same thing...just took the box without him even opening it and did my own thing.
After 2 replacements in a week on mine..today the third one came in and had the same solar flare in the middle of the screen. The guy at the sprint store was now a little more sympathetic and went and got a new 004 out of the back and let me do the activation myself...whew..no update done on that one either!

It's normal to have stock HTC Sense after you root (at least with unrevoked). Do you have Superuser in your app list?

Yes i did have it. I copied my rom zip file over and installed it ... so i think everything is good.
Fresh 3.5
Tho my antenna is now going in and out a lot (which it didnt before the root, thats why i got the old one replaced due to it going in and out)
and 3g is SUPER slow.
Any ideas?

[Q] Ay way to root g2 without ADB. Gingerbread stock??????

I cant use adb and visionary does not seem to work.
Is there a way to root the Gingerbread rom without having to get adb to work?
Because it will not work for me.
Far as I know you'll need adb. Keep trying. You'll get it. When I had a backflip over a year ago. I went crazy trying to understand how to root. Now adb is easy. Easier with win xp I think.

Unfortunately not; there are some "no adb required" guides but they tend to have a high brick rate.
How is adb not working for you?

Idk ive always had problems with adb on my computers.
I was having a problem finding a driver but i found one on a youtube video from g2hacks.
Heres the link.
http://g2hacks.com/g2-drivers/g2-phone-windows-drivers-download/
Incase anybody else is loosing their mind clicking all the links in the how to's on this forum. which all just take you in circle. like getting the run around from an insurance company.
I seem to be recognizing ill try to push some files now.

Did you not go to the wiki which has a step by step guide, including links?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Yah my problem this time was that i didnt have a driver. but that link worked. none of the ones on this website would though.
Everywhere i read it says i have to downgrade first. i was following the guide but i have to install the original g2 OTA signed.
Now ive ran into the problem that every copy i try to download is corrupt. just my luck. a 30 min process takes 5 hrs. or more.
I got to the point where adb reboot my phone into bootloader after the the temp root and did not realize the update.zip would not work. now im afraid to turn my phone back on. i dont want to have to do everything over again.
Ok figured that out. Windows xp was set to hide file extensions so i was nameing is pc10img.zip.zip
Guess ill see what problem lies ahead. i swear i could write a 100 step write up of what i have to do for a 15 step write up.
Got it rooted. Just took all day. Could not let my phone win. LOL.
Havent spent that long on a phone since i installed android and full WP7 dual boot on my HD2.
I run xp x86 on a computer that came with vista. maybe thats why i was having a problem.
I was able to install the nand backup from my old phone right to this phone. just a million hours of tinkering. I cant imagine how frustrated the developers get trying to make these roms work. i bet there compulsive about it though.
If someone sees this please put these drivers on the how to sticky section.
All the other links either would not work for me or were broken.

XP and vista shouldn't matter with the chip architecture so long as it supports it. But then again if it didn't, it would not install at all, and if it did for some weird reason it would not boot so that wasn't your problem.
