How's 3.30 zip update on battery life? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Going from Cm6 to 3.29 ota was a big improvement but after applying 3.3 zip update I kinda been wondering if I didn't see a decrease in battery life. I'm about to flash back to 3.29 to make some more observations.
Anyone have similar observations?

I went back to 3.29 from 3.30 because of this issue.

Iam on cm6.1 and honestly I like the aosp but the reception sucks compared to my wife's stock epk. So, my question is how can I update my radio, wimax and whatever else to the newest version without loosing s-off and root? Is there a stock 3.29 or 3.30 rooted rom?

There is a zip in the development evo section made by calkulin which updates your radio, pri, bc, and wimax all in one.

I have noticed this as well. I have an extended battery and is showing maybe 8 hours of battery life. With 3.26 I was able to get a reported over 1 1/2 days on it. I use the phone pretty much for data very few phone calls.
I think I will be doing the same down grading down to 3.29.

ok, thanks for the replies.
Here's a case in point. Full charge at 315pm nows its 515 pm and I'm down to 88%. That's roughly 6% drain per hour. Before the update zip that I flashed I was getting .5% per hour, or 1% per 2 hours, It was nice. In fact when I'm done with this post I will be going back to 3.29.
I should add, for purposes of being thorough, is that I updated astride task to sync my Google tasks about once every 3 hrs. I suppose I should look at that first. But I can't see it making my battery drain that much faster.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Do you mean you were on 3.29, or did you mean what you said....that you were on 3.26?
I ask because of all the roms I have used 3.29 was the best out of stock eclair, 3.26, Cm6, 3.30.

I'm getting MUCH better battery life with 3.30 than I did with 3.29, I no longer have to charge nightly.

Ok so I did a wipe and then a nandroid restore to a backup from just before I applied the damn 3.30 update. I am still having battery issues.
It's so strange that I can excellent battery life then suddenly I get crappy life. Makes me suspicious that sprint is doing something that is causing my phone to have to work harder and therefore use more battery.

Doubt it, 3.30 hasn't been released (officially) for a reason. I'm assuming because if the drain of battery. Also, some reported a better camera but again in 3.29 I was getting better stability, whereas in 3.30 i was getting stutters when moving the camera like I was in 3.26. I think the problem is the kernel, as it has been proven to be older than 3.29's kernel.
3.29 = Kernel #11
3.30 = Kernel #10
Just a thought, I'm no super dev. I hope we get an official update soon. I want sense 2.0 but I doubt we will see that officially until late December or early January. That along with gingerbread.

What is considered healthy battery usage when looking at how battery usage is broken down.
For example cell standby ay 22%, is at the top of the list, is this ok?

I agree. Are you doing a delvik wipe before you flash the kernel? What kernel you tried? Some kernels are only for 2.1, 2.2, sense only or sell only. Do you have setcpu? Do you have it overclocked and have save on boot checked? Need more info..

I used king #8 without problems. Some kernels did the boot loop also for me. But notice on one after it did that a few times it full worked after. Sometime if that happens pull battery. Do recovery and do delvik again. Reboot. Sometimes it takes a fee reboot and don't know why.. let me know. I'll keep checking this for you and help.. I'm going to be up for awhile..

Best rom for evo

I know it is a subjective question, but I am wondering what is the best rom going for the evo right now? I will soon be moving up to the evo from the hero and I am trying to go ahead and do some research.
Also is there anything else I should do like upgrade the radio, any good kernels?
I'm using aospmod right now for my hero and love the speed and performance. Don't have to have sense at all.
Would also like something that has some good themes available.
Thanks in advance for all your suggestions and help!

Use CM6.1.1 with the updated radio/pri/nv/wimax
When you get your phone update the PRL in the settings, root it, make a nandroid backup (with Amon_RA) and save it to your computer. This is very important. While playing around with your phone you may break your 4G. The only way to fix it is to have your 4G data backed up on your computer. Only Amon_RA recovery does this, clockwork does not back up the Wimax stuff. If you ever mess up your 4G just restore the safety nandroid on your computer.
Once that is done flash the radio/wimax/pri/nv combo in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485 and then install CM6.1.1 and just use the stock kernel built into to CM6. CM6 can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735596.

The front Camera should be working on RLS5. What hardware is your Evo? Maybe try a different kernel or something, but the front cam does work natively in RLS5
As for the battery, as jacoballen stated, I had better luck on pri 1.77 on Myn's rom. There are a million variable that can come into play when battery life is an issue however, and it could be a runaway app, your phone may not like the kernel you're using, it could be the PRI, you could have the 4g wake lock going on if you didn't reboot after shutting 4g off. Just a ton of things that can cause bad battery life. Just gotta rule them all out, one at a time.
Hmmmm. Mine isn't working either. Never looked at it when I flashed.
I was actually about to post about the battery drain myself. Ill try the PRI then go from there.

Use spare parts app to check partial wake usage. Anything that's more than a little sliver could be draining your battery.

Just an fyi, I just changed my kernel and it fixed my ffc not working.
Also downgraded the pri, we'll see if that helps the battery.

[Q] Question about Rooting the epic?

Any major benefits to it right now beside the major LoS issue. OC is not really a key factor in it for me with this phone since its fast anyway. I know custom roms usually always have a major benefit towards what they can do. but is it really worth it at this point. i have not once had any LoS issues, may just battery
PS. i just got my phone yesterday so i dont know much about samsung products. im use to rooting with HTC devices from the start of the hero, Evo, Evo Shift.
I waited a week to root and had no LOS. Then I flashed everything I could get my hands on and still haven't had LOS. The roms that are out all seem a little smoother and faster than stock. Just make sure you wipe data/cache/dalvik and format system before you flash a rom and you should never have any issues. Returning to stock is also so easy that there aren't any real drawbacks to rooting and flashing roms or kernels. If you're happy with the way it is now I'd just give it some time and read about the roms and kernels as everything progresses. I could live with my phone stock but I hate background processes and bloatware lol.

Do you mean forced roaming like on Verizon? If so then yes you can force a prl update to the phone that will let you control roaming. And as far as battery life I run the stock pulled kernel and have it set to 500Mhz Max when the screen is off and 1ghz when on and my battery life has been great (standby times are incredible).

I just started using Anthrax so I can't really speak for it. My go to kernel is the Evo 4g Freedom-v0.9. I would link it... but XDA doesn't trust me yet . You can search the EVO forum or find it in the stickied Detailed ROM Wiki.
I second Freedom.
Freedom v9 is an amazing kernel, i am using the Energy rom, which comes with chopsuey baked in. I recently switched to the anthrax v004 kernel, and my rom is much snappier, and the my battery life almost doubled! my vote is for anthrax!
Im running anthrax with SET CPU set to 245/1036 and screen off profile 245/245 and interactiveX. Been off the charger since 8AM and am at 70% left. considering 10% is wasted when you take it off the charger right away, this isnt too bad...

MikRom thread - Anthrax kernel
This thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038967&page=1613)
will NOT let me reply due to lack of number of posts (very frustrating, but a bit understandable) but I was inquiring about the Anthrax kernel. I'm currently running More Freedom v0.9, and it's slowed down or become sluggish lately. I'm running MikG v2.5.
My two questions are:
will this Anthrax kernel help?
If so, does it also have Bluetooth HID capability? I have a new keyboard and finding a driver for Android is about impossible.
AND, I guess a third. Assuming it helps, how can I get it or where I can download?
Please apprise me if possible!
Thanks!

Thanks. However, I should have noted that this ran pretty well for a while. I've ordered new batteries that are on the way, thinking that the battery might be the culprit. It seems to wane quickly nowadays.
I did not want to leave my phone with the Sprint tech for 1.5 hours to pore through my phone while he did a diagnostics test. I just didn't feel comfortable doing that. He'd assuredly come back and tell me the phone was rooted, blah blah blah, warranty voided, nothing he could do and that's the reason it was sluggish.
After I moved to this it worked really well for about 3-4 months. The last two months it runs out of memory and the battery fades quickly. The only thing I can really point to perhaps is Tweetcaster. Seems to be a big drain on everything and there's no clean exit command for it, unlike other apps, so it runs all the friggin' time if you instantiate it.
As for Anthrax kernels, I've heard some people recommend "test 9".
Do most of you here recommend that as well?
I really need someone to pm me the anthrax kernel.
The test 9 version works amazing on my phone. I'm running mikg*3. 0

Before flashing the anthrax kernel you should wipe dalvik-cache, flash kernel, wipe dalvik-cache again, reboot, let phone sit 10 minutes, and then reboot again. Search xda for the kernel install information to make sure that you are installing it correctly. It's the best for my evo thus far and I have had no problems. It's baked into the shooter E3D rom. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
