[Q] Sprint mobile hotspot question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If you are running CM6 or later I think I have read the native Hot spot feature is free. Is this true? I can't get wifi tether from the market to work with any success.
Thanks

dont use the market one, go to dev website that makes it and download the newest beta
linky http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=Evo

Ok I downloaded the newest beta.. still can't get it to go over like .8kb up and .1 down.. any suggestions?

Just use the one built in to CM6. Settings>Wireless>Tethering

I have a question is the market app bad ? Is there away to trace it or for sprint to find out ?
I'm only asking cus I'm having a hard time figuring out all this rooting stuff its extremely intimidating and because I don't kno to much I'm scared of doing it
And bricking the phone or messing it up but it defin I something wanna do I wanna theme it and everything

Wireless Tether usually works well on our phones. Sprint can easily find out if they wanted too but I highly doubt they will bother checking unless you start using ridiculous amounts of bandwidth.
Just be careful when flashing radios or your hboot and you should be fine. those are the main ones you need to worry about.

dont think so, but doesnt really matter. you can delete them easily by just opening the zip and deleting what you dont want and then flashing the rom. be careful, sense roms have apps that rely on each other and deleting one could break a function. its trial and error to see what can be taken out and what needs to stay. just play with it

Also, once I install a rom and want to get rid of bloat that I don't use, I just use root explorer to delete what I don't use........but as said above, be careful what you delete, because certain things in any rom depend on each other.

Why do you root?

Hello everyone,
I have a simple question that I have yet to come across a decent answer too.
What is the main or real reason people root there phone for.
Is it basically like jailbreaking the iPhone or are theredifferent reasons?
I've bought my EVO 4G about a month ago and have been waiting for a root for the gingerbread 2.3.3 update that came stock with my phone.
The reason I'm asking this is should I really be waiting for a root? In other words why am I waiting for a root?
I personally love the phone as it is and I have had no problems with it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I recommend not rooting if you are asking those questions. I'm not trying to be rude at all.
Root is the name of the admin account in the Linux and Unix operating systems. Think of not having root as running in protected mode.
If you accept the responsibility of maintaining your own security, and don't mind invalidating your warranty then it is for you.
I didn't decide to root until one of the OTA updates from sprint forced a trial video game down my throat that couldn't be uninstalled.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Oh I forgot to add, if you are planning on rooting I highly recommend loading the ROM MIUI.
A forwarding, however, 4G has not been implemented yet. Not a downside for me though. I rarely used 4G. The 3G here is fast enough.

I root due to the need to remove "everything" that "they" put in. If you do not understand you are one of "them"
Thank you for the reply I understand what root is as I run blackbuntu on my desktop.
I wanna know what makes it different. Why are so many people wanting root on the EVO?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Some people do not like HTC Sense. Some of the Sense based custom rom's run smoother than the stock rom's.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Because people want to truely have control of the content on their phone
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I understand that, but what I don't understand is why would people sell there phone and trade it in and all just because they don't have root.

because not having root drains the battery faster because of the Sprint Bloatware. Also having root lets you control you phone and do what you please with it like flashing custom roms and kernals and radios and other groovy stuff.
My main reason I want root is not only to get rid of the bloatware but that way I can have a unique phone and not like 80% of everyone else who has a stock EVO
My reason was so I could have total control of my phone, streamline it by removing the stuff I don't need, freeing up memory and storage space, modifying it to look how I want it to, coaxing a faster, smoother phone and being able to try out different setups to see which gives me the best performance.
I never use thethering.

LOL, he has a valid point. People like AOSP, some people like sense. Rooting let's you pick 'n' choose. Not being "stuck" in stock. I love my phone heavily themed, the eye candy sets it away from my friends phone. Plus my battery life/performance are much greater. But of course there are lots of reason to root and not to.

I root because I own the damn device.
Everything I do with that root access is secondary to that.

I rooted for the ability to tether. It also comes in handy when you need to replace a file like the flash file so that I can watch hulu on my browser. Another thing I should point out, HDMwIn allows me to mirror my display (no limits) over to my tv. With stock and no root, I can only display videos/pictures I recorded myself.
If anything, once they find a way to root 2.3.3, you should try it. Then if you don't like it, you can always set it back to oem status. There's a guide somewhere here.

I root for mobile hotspot.
29.99 to tether with Sprint's 3G? bah, haha, ha, ha-ha
Being able to fix security holes and update your phone yourself is another big upside to having root; you can make sure it's secure yourself without having to wait forever for an update that may or may not come. That also happens to be one of the reasons why you will not see MIUI on my phone.

Tell her that there is a hot guy on XDA that wants her number. :-D Other than that. lol. who cares if it is fully rooted. however, IF SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT HERSELF then it isn't for her. My professional opinion is unless you're married. Stay off her phone. lol. cause she could dump you at anytime for me. LOL! well, she'll be in good hands with me. so haha. LOL

Haha, jerk. But ok, she just really wants to root it. But yeah, i totally understand your point. She really wanted a temp root because she doesn't like all the bloat. But all y'all have is perm.. She isn't dumb, just new to everything. And I mean 100% new. She won't know how to fix anything. I've explained to her what backups and all that good stuff is. She knows what an RUU is. But if something does go wrong, it's only me. So, I will just tell her to wait a bit and see if a temp comes out.

lol my thoughts exactly.
To be honest though to the OP, if she would come on the forums she would be able to learn real easy with step by step instructions on each ROM she wants to flash.
although if she just wants ROOT then that is fine aswell, but to just have S-OFF isnt much until you install SuperUser and BusyBox. you also want to get Titanium Backup so you can get rid of the bloatware either by freezing it or uninstalling it

Unlock and flashing..

I'm considering flashing my EVO to cricket..its already rooted. But I have some questions....are there specific roms that have to be used with cricket? Example..I'm running mik3d right now...can I run a sense rom on cricket? I can easily figure out how to unlock and flash to cricket but i don't know about the rom thing. Any help is greatly appreciated

Not an expert in this matter but my best bet is, no. I don't think that you will need a - cricket - branded Rom, the configuration you'll so to force the phone to that network has nothing to do with the Rom itself, but some apps like the Sprint branded ones might not work.

Don't do it man. The service is REAL spotty. I know sprints isn't much beetter a lot of the time, but its a major step down. If you d/l and surf a lot you'll hate it. I did it to my last one, and got a 3vo for the line, and low and behold I'm back w spritn service and my og evolution runnin decks 1.3/ Lee combo. I get 1550 quadrant scores overclocked, and 1450's at 998w smartass. My d/l speeds are high 4s w 1-3 uploads w wimax. I couldn't get close to half that w cricket. The quadrants comparable, but that doesn't affect your data. Its your choice bro, but I strongly suggest keeping sprint and waiting for lte service and devices. There's gonna be some sick ass phones coming out. Good luck either way.

Don't know where ya are, but I'd help pretty much anyone in here w whatever I could. This damn forum has become an addiction. I don't post much, but I read a lot. Well good luck bro. Best wishes and have fun w the baby. They're what make me complete. ...... and my decked out, undervolted Lee kernel running make you wanna kick yourself in the nuts cause its so sick evo. Lmao. Good luck w cricket. There's a whole section w a bunch of info for it if you search the general section.

To root or not to root?

Im just using the stock gs3 from tmo.
If you all would be so kind as to give me a few pros/cons to root for this phone.
Im am not concerned about voiding warranty.
Im wondering if there are any immediate perks to being rooted:
like bypassing tmo's restriction on wifi hotspot; to my knowledge, tmo now only lets their customers use wifi hotspot with the 5gb plan and not the 2gb plan.
Sent from SCH-T999
I'm short on time right now but if you root your phone you can download an app called wifi tether, which requires root permission, then you use your phone data on your laptop all you want.
With a rooted phone you can also download new roms that people develope and try out a lot of new functions before the official update.
You are more exposed to security risks once you root your phone I believe, but just don't install apps from random sites
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I really see no cons to rooting except warranty which isn't really true. If you study the warranty and know your stuff you can verbally defend your right to root and not lose warranty.
Pros: everything.
I do not see the point of having a non rooted android phone with some sort of recovery.. Custom ROMs, themes and titanium backup for all your apps
here ya go http://bit.ly/UUaCxg
Don't do it and please leave.
All you need to do is read over all the great threads around here to form a decision.
To root.

Ive rooted before and I have explored almost all the developers' work on other phones.
Just to clarify im asking about this phone specifically. The first guy already answered my biggest concern about the wifi hotspot.
If you guys can think of any other immediate perks like: unwarranted tmo restrictions that are resolved via rooting this phone.
I will never go back to bone stock gs3 because I would miss out on _________.
Im already aware of the capability to "pirate" most paid apps.
Also there's the possibility of finding a more buttery smooth rom than the stock rom of course.
Extra battery life via underclocking with an aftermarket kernel is obviously another big one, but things im looking for are things on the same level as how rooting allows me to bypass the wifi hotspot limitations that tmo put on the 2gb plan
Sent from SCH-T999
I'd say that if you just want a phone to work and don't get about any extra stuff, don't bother rooting it. If you're interested in modifying your phone and basically being capable of doing A LOT more than you can with stock, root it.
Just make sure you do a lot of research before you do anything. I read hundreds of pages on this forum before I did anything just in case.
Adfree app, which requires root, changes everything for the better.
I mainly use my root for ad block, titanium backup, and maybe delete gsiff_daemon (didn't delete it yet because it hasn't tried to kill my battery yet). Something else that could be useful maybe GMD gesture control
There are a lot of nice apps that require root. Even if you don't have any apps in mind now, at some point you'll probably come across one you want and you'll kick yourself for not having gotten around to rooting yet. Besides tripping the flash counter and warranties the only con is the possibility of failing miserably and bricking your phone, but as long as you follow instructions you'll be fine.
ability to flash different radios for better/worse signal.
ability to flash different roms for better/worse battery life.

Im considering rooting it though to bypass tmo's restriction on wifi hotspot, and to be able to use google voice as my voicemail.
