I was hoping someone from this forum could help me out. I have a samsung fascinate and my girlfriend just got a HTC incredible. Her stock phone as been a little buggy; she's had problems with the proximity sensor and the screen shutting off unexpectedly. Otherwise she loves the phone.
I wanted to flash a really stable rom on her phone. It doesnt have to have all the bells and whistles; just needs to be reliable.
Since I am a fascinate owner, dont know much about the incredible roms. I would really appreciate some suggestions on the best rom for her phone. Thanks.
The most stable ROM I have used on the Incredible would be Redemption http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768626
Lou cooks up some awesome stuff, I would try that one first - it's a Sense ROM so it will look/feel very close to stock. It has the latest HTC Kernel so charging times are faster as well.
Thanks for the suggestion. Ill check it out.

Be sure that the phone isn't defective before flashing any roms on it. If it is having problems when it is stock then i wouldn't do anything that will void the warranty until you are certain that the phone is not broke.
other than that i would recommend MIUI. n_i_x has been doing great things with it.

I'd say Skyraider 3.3.2 Sense.. I haven't had any issues with it. But if you have a slcd inc, DO NOT root it. There are some serious issues with them at the moment. Just looking at the first page of the thread shows people with bricked slcd incs..

Agreed. I am running the 8/1 leak with the bloat removed, it is so ridiculously stable. I've gone more that two weeks without shutting down or rebooting, just killing tasks now and then. No lag, no glitches, no bugs. Rock solid. I've NEVER had a smartphone that could go that long without a reboot (windows mobile and blackberry defectee here).
I say try skyraider sense. very stable and has some nice features stock sense doesnt.
SLCD here and so far no problems
I have SLCD HTC INC that I purchased on the 16th. The main issue is finding the correct clockwork recovery. I personally flashed the Ra recovery using unrevoked with custom recovery image option. So far my phone has been running great with SkyRaider 3.3.2 with King CFS #5 kernel. (Hydra OC kernel runs fine too).

Your lucky then. I have seen many threads of people with bricked phones, mostly from flashing roms. CM6 in particular. And yes i heard Amon RA works, but i would be safe and just wait for the issues to be cleared up.
The new Virtuous ROM is also extremely stable and is an excellent Sense ROM.
...my $.02
Virtuous was my first rom and I loved it. I'd recommend this if you wanted a clean, simple rom.
I'm currently hooked on MIUI though. IDK how I'll ever return to sense or vanilla roms.

Not a diss to the developers, but with my last phones all the roms felt like they were put together by a teenager. Always got force closes, freezing, and caused other problems like bad reception, wifi wouldn't connect, etc.
I love the way some of these roms on the incredible look, but my main concern is reliability. I haven't had one single force close on my stock phone.
So, is it worth it? If so, which rom seems to be the most reliable?
There's lots of stable ROMs out there. If you like the stock look and feel then try out virtuous. It's basically stock without the bloat and from what I hear its very stable.
What about this one? I love the way it looks.

Just check for a buglist which is usually either in the first or second post. That'll tell you what's wrong with the ROM. But as long as its not an alpha or beta build it would be alright

Definitely worth it
Just be sure to make a full backup before you flash any new ROM's as I'm sure you know.
The incredible has a lot of talented developers here, so if you take the time to look through the ROM's you'll find more than a few excellent choices.
IncROM is a nice ROM for speed and it's quite stable.
Another highly recommended ROM is Sky Raider 3.5, I've been running it for a couple of months with no force closes or issues of any kind.
I enjoy it because of the stability, speed and battery life I get out of it.
>>
Something you should also think about flashing is a custom kernel. They can greatly impact your speed and battery life in a good way, many times they have a bigger impact than a custom ROM in those categories.
Just stuff to think about, be sure to do your research before flashing. Read through the thread thoroughly so you won't run into any problem.
If you want something different than stock, check out CM7 RC1, it's really nice. I did skyraider, virtuous...etc. While they are nice, I discovered it's more fun to try different AOSP roms.
I'm a huge fan of Incredibly Re-engineered. It's like stock Incredible on a steroid-PCP cocktail. Super fast, very slick looking and very stable. The only issue I have with it is an MMS issue, and as far as I understand it's uncommon. If you want to keep HTC Sense on your phone, this ROM has my vote.
like has been mentioned previously, Skyraider's ROMS are great as well as Re-Engineered.
just make sure you have the latest HBOOT and CWM. i always wipe the phone and cache just to be sure there are no conflicts. lots of force closes if that doesnt happen.
have fun
I was asking myself the same thing a couple days ago. I had been running incredibly reengineered for a few weeks and decided to go back to stock. That only lasted about half a day as I had forgotten about all the bloat in the stock build. So now I'm back on inc re eng and very happy with it.
I want to try out the AOSP roms sometime but I really like HTC sense!
Totally worth it. Many of the ROMs for the dinc are very polished and stable.
I'll add my vote for IncRom - can't stay away from it. Zero bugs, beautiful interface and a very responsive and generous developer.

I use CM7 with ADW EX and I don't miss Sense at all. I personally think it's much better than sense. I know a lot also use Launcher Pro with CM7.
SR 3.5 is the best thing to ever happen to my Inc. Fully customizable, power toggles in drop down drawer, completely stable, everything works. If ur looking for a sense based rom look no further.

Flashed the incROM and SR 3.5 over the past few days.
incROM was more laggy than stock and kept getting force closes.
SR 3.5 messed with my reception (bars would just between 0 and 2-3 constantly, even sitting in one spot).
Yep, I'm staying stock. Now I know why I stopped flashing roms on my previous phones. Sure, the cool extras are neat, but not worth it because of the problems IMO
And yes, I did wipe of data/cache/dalvik/etc

I am looking for a stable 2.2 or 2.2.1 rom for my wifes g2. I have glanced at the development forum and it seems gingerbread is all the rage right now. My wife just needs a solid, dependable, daily driver. I just want to flash something for her that works and be done with it. The stock rom seems to have some bloat and I am hoping for better battery life as well.
What is the most popular rom at the moment? I rooted her phone (permanent s-off) so I am ready to go. Thanks in advance!
I would honestly suggest cm7. Or for the best sense rom, virtuous. You could just remove the bloat with Titanium backup from the stock rom.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Thanks for the info. I will probably give virtuous a try.
Highly recommend virtuous' froyo offering until the dev releases the gingerbread version. I've been using it since I got my DZ and it's simply amazing how stable and fast it really is.
I actually flashed Virtuous this morning to see if it was any good and all I can say is it was laggy as a shaggy sheep. I flashed the whole thing through rom manager and did a full wipe so I don't know what the hell but it was insanely laggy. You could hit a button and wait well over a second for a response. Maybe I needed to flash a new kernel? Maybe I needed to run the update from .0 to .1? Who knows?! I found it aesthetically pleasing but that is about it. (Maybe it is because I have a g2 and it is for desire z?)
For stable daily drivers I've been using Cm6.1.1 for nearly a month. I found Cm7RC4 to have to many niggling issues like my camera locking up the phone every couple times I tried to use it. Let alone needing to use gps.
I hear good things about miui but I cannot speak from experience.
I've been using CM7 RC2 for a couple of weeks now without issue. It has been stable, improved battery life and performance.
I'd also suggest CM7. I've been using that ever since i rooted my phone, and havent had any problems with it so far.

I have never flashed a rom through rom manager. Only really used it to get CWM installed. I prefer to get a rom going the old fashioned way and flash through recovery. Did a full wipe of data, battery, davlik then installed the rom on day one and has been running flawless ever since.
While CM7 is working good its not 100% stable yet. There are random reboots and freezes. I would say the most stable ROM at the moment is CM6.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841275 It's not Gingerbread but still everything works and there are no problems to report.

Keep in mind that CyanogenMod is designed specifically to be *fast*. Virtuous is simply a port of the HTC Sense ROM. Also, keep in mind that Virtuous comes 'out of the box' with the regular HTC kernel - 800MHz, no changes. There are 2 additional kernels available: Standard - OC'd to 1GHz (highest you can go without changing voltage) and a built-in screen off profile. Does not support SetCPU or anything. Advanced is a full-blown open kernel - you can setup your own profiles, overclock (I think to 1.5GHz or so). I personally run Advanced to 1.2GHz with some other profiles, but if it was my wife's phone, I'd toss the Standard kernel in there and call it a day.
Also, Sense *does* add some bloat (it's an entirely new UI), but it's totally worth it, IMO (especially for a girl's phone). The improved visuals, extra features, etc make it totally worth it. If you're doing that much, go ahead and setup LauncherPro instead of the stock Sense launcher and she'll be rocking and rolling.
This is very helpful info everyone. I now have to decide between cm 6.1 and virtuous. Sounds like both of these roms are the set it and forget it variety which is what I was looking for. She is not a flashaholic like myself so one stable rom is all I need.

See that is the thing, I don't like the fact that I will have to overclock my phone to make Virtuous "run good". That is pretty damn silly in fact. I mean they package the kernel for stock speeds since it is based on the DZ stock rom. What about all those desireZ owners? They surely don't have to overclock to make their phones run without any lag. Why not package a kernel that is capable of overclocking to a reasonable speed out of the box like any one of the cyanogen releases?
I feel this is a tremendous oversight on the ROM developers part. I would love to rock their rom and get a good feel for Sense UI so all the people who come to me for advice on tech related matters can have my unbiased opinion on the UI, not what I had to go through to make it run without any lag. That is some Grade A bull****.
I suppose it would be less bull**** if I knew how to flash a kernel.
You flash it the same as a Rom except no wipe and it takes about 30 seconds. Also virtuous used to come stock with overclock but took many people were having issues with it. As in they don't know how to set up proper profiles with a setcpu type program. So the overlook kernels became an extra add-on for more advanced users.

Virtuous is good with overclock. I found the untouched gingerbread sense ruu that rmk prepared to be a lot smoother. Bluetooth was a bit hit and miss though.
I'm on the saga ginger sense rom right now and no issues at all. Had to tweak some aesthetic things like font, but it's good.
Still haven't found a rom on the dz as good as Super D was on the G1 yet...

Funny thing, I think the first 20 or so minutes on a new rom may not be representative. I flashed my wife's mt3g slide using the stock update, and it lagged BADLY for the first 20 min. Including a battery pull because the phone app (com.android.phone) went non responsive. Just my $0.02.

This rom gives you plenty of options, is as stable as CM6.1 or more stable. Runs faster.
I do think it scores somewhat slower on the benchmarks, however in this users opinion it is much faster in scrolling, loading, and general usage.
You will have to google to find it, but give it a try. You can have lots of the sense elements or disable them if you want a more plan vanilla experience.
Also I did very much like cm6.1
Cm7 is coming along but still working out many bugs... see the changelog. Many will say this is stable enough for daily use.
I used to use virtuous, have since moved on to gingerbread ROMs though. When I was using virtuous it was brilliant. Fast and stable. It was not laggy like another user said. I used CWM recovery to flash it and did a full data/cache wipe beforehand and you should do whenever you change ROMs. Another vote for senses ease of use and virtuous' reliability!

Hello all, I've been active on many other forums, and have searched through XDA often.
This is my first post here.
I just acquired a Droid Inc from a friend--its an upgrade from my OG Droid.
I want to root and rom it.
I'm not quite sure where to start as far as which is the best root method, and which rom would be the best for me.
I don't mind if the root method is complicated, I'm a technical person.
I do want to make sure the rom I choose is REALLY stable though.
I've had some problems with some mods on my OG Droid (mainly CM7) where I would occasionally not receive texts (this is a big issue for me). I could deal with some occasional FC's, but that's still annoying too.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Welcome. I too came from an og Droid. HUGE step up. I would use unrevoked as a root method. I've done it first time and flawless on 2 incredibles. As for a rom ...its personal preference. For stability I'd recommend sky raider 4.0. I use it as my daily. Upgrade to 4.1 coming this weekend. So you might want to wait for that one. Check out the stickies in the dev thread to help you with finding one. There's tons available. ****...try a few I do

Go to Unrevoked.com, and follow those instructions. You need to download their HBOOT drivers, and Unrevoked tool. This will root you and get you S-OFF. The ROMs I like are the latest MIUI, SkyRaider 4.0 (4.1 out this weekend hopefully!), and CM7.

The new lockscreens for the latest release are real nice too!
Unrevoked is the way to go for rooting, as everyone else has said. As for ROM's, it's a Ford/Chevy/Dodge thing. You have to try a few then decide what you like. If you want a non-Sense rom, CM7 is the way to go. If you like Sense, Skyraider is good. I used it for a while but came back to Carbonite Fusion. I guess I just like the carbon fiber look and screen animations. Plus is a really sweet rom, flashes fast and is extremely smooth and stable. The stable is Froyo 2.2 but Trock also released a 2.3.3 version. It's not 100% stable yet, but I'm using it as my daily rom. It's nice having a Gingerbread rom with Sense.
Carbonite Fusion .5 and G 1.0
All of the answers have been awesome, and is a great help!
I'm hopefully going to root it before I leave work...at least that was my intention when I got to work 7 hours ago. 2 hours ago...there's still hope!
Yup I also came from the OG Droid and let me just say, CM7 runs on the INC like 2 OG Droids strapped together with a Rocket on the way to the Moon. Its awesome.
Definitely use Unrevoked to root. It's painless. As for roms, I use the latest MIUI with Chad's Incredikernel. It's stable and gets nice battery life. CM7 for the incredible is also nice and stable.
hmm...
ive rooted, unrooted and all that before but since i got my replacement dinc the unrevoked process has not been working... keeps saying "failed to flash recovery" or something along those lines.
I'm excited getting a DInc soon. Sell or use my rooted CM7 Eris.
I'm leaning towards UnRevoked regular not Forever for rooting. UnRevoked Forever warnings I find a little scary at this point.
As far as ROM. I'll start with CM7 cause it's familiar. If that works I'll Nand & Titanium Backup that. And on to SkyRaider & other ROMs.
Get the UberKingdom Sense 3.0 ROM. It's currently the most constantly updated, stable, and sexy ROM IMO
If you want stability with the best features, SkyRaider 4.1 hands down.
Alternative
Welcome to the club, DInc is the best phone I have ever owned. Unrevoked is the way to go for rooting, but if you happen to run into problems with it, like I did. (Complications are typical with windows if that's your thing) another method would be more of a two step, in some respects. download z4root, get a temporary root, then load up rom manager, and flash clockworkmod. You'll probably have to flash cwm multiple times (I had to do it in excess of 20 times before it took) CWM sticks, download unrevokedforever zip from unrevoked.com boot into recovery and flash the unrevokedforever zip to get s-off, reboot again to make sure you have obtained s-off afterwords. If so, you can now flash a rooted ROM (I would recommend CM7, with Chad's Incredikernel) and you're set! Good luck!
Use unrevoked to root.
UBER Kingdom is a good ROM, personally, because I like the Sense AI and I don't see the point in buying an HTC and using a ROM that doens't have Sense. It takes away from the whole experience. CM7 is good too though. Very quick.
Thanks again so much for all of the excellent advice!
I successfully and easily used the unrevoked method to root this past Friday.
I then loaded on SkyRaider 4.0 (I didn't check for the 4.1 update yet...maybe it came out over the weekend like a few people said it would..)
I'm very happy so far! This thing is flying! I was right on the verge of buying a new phone (probably Droid Charge) and now I feel like I don't even have to.
(the only thing still making me want to upgrade is to lock in my unlimited data before they switch to tiered data).
I think I'm going to put my money towards a G tablet now..
I've been using the Hybrid 1.7 ROM. Runs great.
I like Uber Kingdom also. I think the sense 3.0 is awesome and i really like the lockscreen.
uber kingdom is so nice. i was in the same boat as you, og droid and got a droid inc and it is so so so much better. sense, and especially sense 3.0 is amazing. you should try out uber kingdom

I have tried both out and i have to say they are both very good. MikG 2.2 was Very Very fast and fluid haven't tried 2.4 but i see some issues already with that one but i currently reflahsed to RC2 to give that a go and so far i am happy its faster then rc1 also some tiny quirks i had it reboot on me 1 time but that was after i flashed not sure what caused that. So if you were to choose between the two id say its a toss up,. Try both and see whats better for you. Oh,, Mik comes with some extra apps that i never used but again the roms are both great in my opinion.
This is all great, i'm looking for some ROMs as well... unfortunately i can't root my EVO yet... stuck on 2.3.3 (decided to root too late in the game) but with all the commotion surrounding the idea of a possible binary root i have been eagerly looking for a Sense 3.0 ROM
i have looked all over utoob for a review of the Synergy RC2 but haven't found a single one... i did read somewhere tho that synergy's platform is Froyo and not gingerbread... not sure tho.
any other suggestions? is there something better out there? i would check myself... but as stated above, i cannot root my EVO yet :/

How do you see issues with a ROM that you've never tested yourself? As for the apps that Mik often includes, you can remove them yourself if you don't want them. I'd say that Mik and Synergy have about the same fan base (size wise).
I was on RC1 but went to the 3.0 nightlies. I daily drove RC1 for awhile but liked the carousel effects and a few minor things so I have been doing nightlies for awhile.
I think today I am going to go back to Synergy though. 3.0 is just too unstable for MY application. Fantastic Rom and works for some but it's too laggy for myself.
Mik was a good rom too but I ran it for so long I just wanted the change. Overall I think I like Synergy better with RC1 and am hearing RC2 only improved it.
LOL I think I might have ADD'ed out on this post. Sorry
Neither... This mik is a great Dec himself... The fastest smoothest most stable build to date with full sense 3.0 would be Kings Kingdom

Synergy had Sense 2.1 with many 3.0 items added to it. And if you look at the first page of Synergy thread there is 2 different reviews and at least 1 of then is a video review. I actually think both are.

Have been using MikG since 2.2 and liking it a lot. Near as I can tell, everything works, and does so smoothly. I gave Synergy RC1 a shot and had couple of issues with Email and SMS. My guess would be that those issues were addressed for the RC2 release and probably aren't a problem. I just haven't taken the opportunity to try it out yet. Other than that, better is a relative term. Try them out and see which one fits your needs and wants.
Both are solid roms but i have to go with synergy for now
I've used both MikG 2.4 and Synergy RC1 and now RC2. I like both roms, but have to go with Synergy RC2 ftw

Tried both, and MikG hands down. EPST actually works fully on MikG. Do a simple thing like GPSCLRX and it'll say Restarting in 10secs but it doesn't on Synergy. You have to manually restart. On MikG it simply just works. Little things like that make MikG better.

For Me it is MikG as it is more customizeable

I'm not trying to start anything...but what do you mean more customizeable sir?
But yes, I would go with mik G hands down if I was rooted. I had always been a myn/warm rom fan until I used mikroms and they are clean, polished, and mik-optimized! Plus...we have an entire site dedicated to mikroms and so questions and answers are quickly responded to. Not to say that synergy is bad, because myn is still one of my favorites ..but I am saying aamikam is the best. Plus, synergy used (with expressed permissions) ideas and files from mikg so most things you find in synergy are in MikG.
But as I usually tell peeps, flash both! Nandroid and try each out for a day or a few hours. Set up your emails aand browse and stuff. See which one works on your phone. Both roms have great communities. I am mostly over on themikmik but when perusing xda I am either on Q&A threads or posting with the mynions

I need a Gingerbread/Sense ROM with and emphasis on stability. Close to stock would be best though it isn't paramount. I realize that ROMs are like beers, you get a different opinion on which is best depending on who you ask. The circumstances just don't allow me to try out a whole slew of ROMs.
A good friend's wife has an EVO 4G (I have a Sensation, G2x & HD2) and is having trouble with stability. I suggested we root it and slap a custom ROM on it. While they were over I rooted it and got everything ready to back up and slap a ROM on it. Problem is I am unsure as to what ROM to put on it. Yes, I could try out several ROMs to find one that works but this isn't going to go well at all. The reasons should be obvious for anyone who is married. This is magnified by the fact that I would only have access to the phone maybe once every other week. I need a silver bullet for this one.
Thank you for your time.
I've tried a ton of sense roms, MikG still wins for stability and everything working for me.
I'm currently running synergy w/o sense lockscreen. Loving it. I've had no problems with stability.

RC2 from the below thread? Is there a problem with the lock screen or is that a personal preference?

Try EVO classic Rom. It's based off the latest stock Rom. It's fast and so far no trouble for me.

Thats the one. I used to use Synergy to but I found it to be a bit slower than MikG and Mik sees more updates.
If you go Synergy RLS1 is the newest version. RC2 is older and was an unofficial release I believe. I never had a problem with the lock screen on Synergy.

I've found Mik Roms to be the most stable as well as be current with the latest updates. Myn's Roms are excellent as well.

1. If she is having a problem with stability on a stock unrooted Evo then she needs to backup her information and just do a factory reset.
2. Trying out several ROMs is required because phones react to various ROMs differently. I can tell you that a certain ROM plays well with my phone but it may not play quite as well with yours. Then comes the issue of kernels. Kernels have a large impact on the phone's stability as well.
3. Tell your friend to do his own homework on how to get her phone up and running or have an affair with her so that you can see her more often and get more opportunities to test ROMs/kernels on her phone.
What version of Sense would you prefer?

I ran AOSP and CM ROMs on my G2X. Eaglesblood with Faux's kernel. CM and AOSP ROMs are actually my preference for Android in general. I am not a huge fan of Sense, it has some nice apps but its too confining. This isn't my phone though.

The EVO 4G has 2.5 by default I believe. I run the leaked 3.5 on my Sensation and it has some improvements over 2.5 and a couple over 3.0. If there is a very stable and fully functional ROM with 3.x that would be better. Stability and functionality still trump everything else though.
They mentioned that Netflix has to work as they use it often. Skype working properly with video would be good as well.

i agree AOSP Roms are a lot better, smoother, and allow for more customization, that's why the thread i made in my sig is only about them and not about sense based roms. plus whenever an ICS rom comes out it'll be AOSP
