Is it worth it to install custom ROMs? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not a diss to the developers, but with my last phones all the roms felt like they were put together by a teenager. Always got force closes, freezing, and caused other problems like bad reception, wifi wouldn't connect, etc.
I love the way some of these roms on the incredible look, but my main concern is reliability. I haven't had one single force close on my stock phone.
So, is it worth it? If so, which rom seems to be the most reliable?

There's lots of stable ROMs out there. If you like the stock look and feel then try out virtuous. It's basically stock without the bloat and from what I hear its very stable.

What about this one? I love the way it looks.

That one's good lllboredlll updates all the time and is very helpful. He likes stability over performance.Great mods too!
Try 1.2 been using for a while

Just check for a buglist which is usually either in the first or second post. That'll tell you what's wrong with the ROM. But as long as its not an alpha or beta build it would be alright
Sent from my Droid Incredible running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5.3.

Definitely worth it
Just be sure to make a full backup before you flash any new ROM's as I'm sure you know.
The incredible has a lot of talented developers here, so if you take the time to look through the ROM's you'll find more than a few excellent choices.
IncROM is a nice ROM for speed and it's quite stable.
Another highly recommended ROM is Sky Raider 3.5, I've been running it for a couple of months with no force closes or issues of any kind.
I enjoy it because of the stability, speed and battery life I get out of it.
>>
Something you should also think about flashing is a custom kernel. They can greatly impact your speed and battery life in a good way, many times they have a bigger impact than a custom ROM in those categories.
Just stuff to think about, be sure to do your research before flashing. Read through the thread thoroughly so you won't run into any problem.

If you want something different than stock, check out CM7 RC1, it's really nice. I did skyraider, virtuous...etc. While they are nice, I discovered it's more fun to try different AOSP roms.

I'm a huge fan of Incredibly Re-engineered. It's like stock Incredible on a steroid-PCP cocktail. Super fast, very slick looking and very stable. The only issue I have with it is an MMS issue, and as far as I understand it's uncommon. If you want to keep HTC Sense on your phone, this ROM has my vote.

like has been mentioned previously, Skyraider's ROMS are great as well as Re-Engineered.
just make sure you have the latest HBOOT and CWM. i always wipe the phone and cache just to be sure there are no conflicts. lots of force closes if that doesnt happen.
have fun

I was asking myself the same thing a couple days ago. I had been running incredibly reengineered for a few weeks and decided to go back to stock. That only lasted about half a day as I had forgotten about all the bloat in the stock build. So now I'm back on inc re eng and very happy with it.
I want to try out the AOSP roms sometime but I really like HTC sense!

Totally worth it. Many of the ROMs for the dinc are very polished and stable.
I'll add my vote for IncRom - can't stay away from it. Zero bugs, beautiful interface and a very responsive and generous developer.

I use CM7 with ADW EX and I don't miss Sense at all. I personally think it's much better than sense. I know a lot also use Launcher Pro with CM7.

SR 3.5 is the best thing to ever happen to my Inc. Fully customizable, power toggles in drop down drawer, completely stable, everything works. If ur looking for a sense based rom look no further.

MIUI... all the way... stable and Great themes!!!

I'm new and I use cyan the stable but as I've done more reading and gotten better I load the nightly's now and wow its like a new phone

Flashed the incROM and SR 3.5 over the past few days.
incROM was more laggy than stock and kept getting force closes.
SR 3.5 messed with my reception (bars would just between 0 and 2-3 constantly, even sitting in one spot).
Yep, I'm staying stock. Now I know why I stopped flashing roms on my previous phones. Sure, the cool extras are neat, but not worth it because of the problems IMO
And yes, I did wipe of data/cache/dalvik/etc

Wow...what are u talking about either your phone is messed up or youre not giving the roms enough time to load. Theres no way the stock htc rom is faster. The "bars" you see for reception dont exactly mean that your reception is changing...mine did it on the stock rom too mind you

best evo rom?

So coming to Evo4G in couple days and am wondering which sense rom is performing the best right now? plan on rooting as soon as its in my hands
any help would be great on rom choice
mainly looking for sense rom with good battery life and stable running
dont care about overclock so much
thanks in advance
I like regawmod 3 but it is only for beta testers right now. Wait til' its out but for now i would recommend virus.
I'm using Calkulin's EViO rom and I am absolutely in love with it. I'm on 24hrs of moderate usage and my battery isn't even halfway drained.
This probably isn't what you're looking for, but I would reccommend trying several for yourself and deciding which you like the most. Just as you can see from the responses so far, everyone has their own favorites and for different reasons, you might as well see which you like the most. I for one like Damage Control.
Stable sense, mm well I'm using evio rom rite now and I like it much, fast and reliable, fresh rom is good too, but imo evio is faster and sense work I just flash the hddesire dump file for the filp clock and it works really nice
HTC EVIO using swype
The best rom is always the one that is supposed to be released
fresh 3.2 works great

What kernel are you using? I've been on EViO since Day 1 and have never gotten this kind of battery life. Don't get me wrong, battery life is good, but not THIS good!
ive used CM6 nightlies for a few months now.
i have tried Baked Snack, Fresh, Calks, etc
Of those I think i liked Baked Snack the most. Fresh always seemed a touch laggy to me, not sure if I ever tried it with a different Kernel though.
Right now i'm ont he 9/20 nightly of Cyanogenmod, and i'm using the 7.6BFS kernel in Turbo mode....and hit a 2605 Quadrant score...
everything is just smooth.
but i'm looking into going back to a sense rom. But i use ADW Launcher, just love it.
I love fresh with man up theme currently 20hrs + on normal use.....
Do any one know what is the best Rom / kernel for heavy use of the phone (what Rom will allow the phone to be use without draining battery life fast )
So far fresh Rom is good just wondering if there is something better
cyanogen, ride til i die lol
Right now, I'm using fresh, It used to work great I just updated to the latest one. It is very laggy to me but I believe that is my fault haha. I backup system data along with apps in titanium backup then restored all. I'm actually searching for a different rom but Fresh has been great to me. Also, I really want to try cyanogen its just not all the things work yet. I know cyanogen has great stuff and hes been in the game a very long time. When i has my g1 a few years back, his rom was the only one I touched, So smooth and nice. Most likely my choice with be cyanogen when everything is fixed, and I havent even used it on the evo!
I guess alot of people just don't reply to Questions on this forum very often compared to Development posts. I would recommend trying out Myn's Warm Two Point Two. I used to use Fresh but wanted to try out Myn's when it came out because it looked like an awesome rom, needless to say I'll never look back. The numbers on Myn's rom post don't lie. Also, I feel it is important that a dev regularly contributes to posts on their rom, which Myn does. I tried Cyanogen one time, and just wasn't a fan, plus the broken 4g is a deal breaker for me.
the beauty with the evo is there are so many quality ROM's to try out, you should really try them all out. I only run sense based roms because it allows me to sync with my exchange email, so i would recommend trying these out as i have:
in no particular order
- Baked snacks
- Fresh
- Myn's
- Any calk ROM
- there are a couple of sense basic ROM's as well
there is also AOSP based ROM's that if work for you give them a shot. the beauty is, the one that does what you want is the best ROM for you

The best one for me is the one I made to fit my use. Use the dsixda kitchen to start and slowly you will get deeper into customizing it past the kitchen. I don't use other roms anymore because if something isn't working you have to wait for them to fix it. I keep a stock rooted backup on hand when I am building my rom in case something is not working.

Myn's Rom vs Stock

Hey guys. I was hoping some of you ROM flashing freaks can help me out here. After a month or so of having full root I finally decided to d/l Rom Manager (what an awesome app...major kudos to the dev!) and the first thing I did was try out the famous CM6 rom.
First off let me admit to the fact that I don't think I gave it a fair shot...mb I was scared by the lack of Sense that I have grown so used to, but after a very short while I reverted to my backup of the stock rom. Besides the lack of familiarity with a non-Sense ROM I was also turned off by the lack of 4G and the small things that people on the CM6 thread were complaining about such as notifications for text and emails not showing up on the status bar. I also saw a handful of people complaining about excessive battery drain. Anyway, I stray from my point. I'm sure CM6 is an awesome ROM, I mean thousands of people swear by it, so there must be something to it...just right now I need some Sense.
On that note it seems to me that the most popular Sense rom is Myn's. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this. What I really don't understand is this: What makes Myn's ROM or any of the other Sense rom better than stock? I would really like to hear from MYN users (and other sense rom users) and tell me why you prefer your ROM over stock.
Thanks in advance for any useful feedback!
I use Myn's ROM and CM6.1 (the latter right now).
The most cited thing about Myn's ROM that people like is the theming. Myn is also really on it with the updates, and he includes new features with every release.
Just nandroid and flash it. If you like Sense, you can't go wrong. Also, definitely give CM6 another go sometime in the future. It's great.

Hey Sock, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I think I def didn't give a CM6 a fair try. I think I just got scared off by the unfamiliar territory. One thing I did notice when I had it running was that my reception wasn't very good. I only had 2 bars in an area that I usually have full or close to full bars. Oddly though, it was working fine and was d/l content from the market at around the same speed as when I was on stock.
CM6 uses a different code for signal reception than sense roms (less bars). Even though it appears different, there are no differences in data speed. Those bars u see are for data strength btw

Ive been using myns roms for quite a while now, all 3 of his warm 2.2 releases. I highly suggest you give it a try. The theme is silky smooth, all sense widgets work, myn has put his magic touch into it so it runs smoother and snappier than stock, he is ON TOP of updating his Roms, and always adds new features and little touches to it. Plus there are all sorts of options for customizing to your liking. I also get much better battery life than stock. Check it out good sir.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
While I don't run Myn's (running MIUI), the reason I started flashing custom ROMs was to get rid of the Sprint bloat that the stock ROM had. After each restart I would see a Nascar app and a whole lot of other **** running that I couldn't care less about. Also now I can use setcpu to underclock my phone at times (screen off and etc) to help save my battery as well. Seeing much longer battery life now.
I have used Myn's, CM, MIUI, Calks, Fresh, DC, etc. Right now I am back on the newest stock release. I was kind of missing the stock appearance and I found that a couple tweaks I like wouldn't work on the other roms. Plus, I can get rid of all excess and unwanted apps using titanium or root explorer. Finally, my battery life is phenomenal so I think I'll stick with stock for a while. However, of the custom sense roms, I think the ones I have tried were all great. DC is very slow to update while myn is very fast and regular with his. Myn is great if you want a themed rom, if not I say try calk or fresh, Ava's rom is pretty sweet too. I guess what it comes down to is do a nandroid backup and start flashing away til you find one you like.

in my opinion myn's rom is very fast runs great and has the evo hotspot so you dont have to shell out an extra 30 a month it has 4g and is very stable. plus you get huge battery savings plus all other shell options and dev stuff that i kinda understand but dont want to sound stupid trying to explain.. i really cant wait for the next myn rom to come out it looks awesome and works even better, but i got my stock battery with heavy use from about 4 hours to almost 10 hours, but its all in personal choice. hope my input helped a little..
try su file manager & terminal from the market and if you dont have busybox get it from market and you can remove any file you want you just have to mount as read-write

Best sense rom?

I've been running cyanogen and then MIUI ever since I got my EVO (on my second, first was stolen. ) but I only had my first EVO on sense roms for as long as it took for cyanogen's to first came out. I used to run damage control on my old one, but it seems like there's WAAAAAY more options now. What do you guys think is the best sense rom and why?
I'm been running Myn's WarmTwoPointTwo. I like it because it's well supported, broad user base, it's beautiful (I didn't like all the "shiny" Sense graphics, W2.2 cleaned it up--just looks sharp and sophisticated), it's fast and everything seems to work. I was using the nightlies when they came out and found that I really missed the features of the Evo's camera--I take a lot of pictures and video. Until the camera features improve, I'm sticking with 2.2
Yeah, as bloated as sense was, the things they added were never detrimental to android, I wish we could just pick and choose sometimes. :<
I have been running sac's roms for the past month and they are definitely sweet. He gives you like 5 different launchers that you can use so if you get bored. The battery life on my Evo has been the best it has ever been on any Rom.

This is a vicious cycle. Beware of the flashaholics anonymous club.
I love Ava Froyo V10. I've been following Ava since the beginning, and it has only gotten better by leaps and bounds.
I've tried Stock, Cyanogen, Fresh, and Warm, but never really took a good liking to any of them. Ava Froyo has been my go-to-ROM. On previous versions of Ava Froyo, I've coupled it with the Netarchy Toastmod Kernel, however V10 doesn't need it (you won't have an unlocked CPU Voltage, just fyi). I've found it has way better battery life than Myn's.
I prefer Myn's at the moment due to the fact there is such a large modding community, it makes making your perfect rom alot easier. Calkulin also has a script out there to remove Sense, it is probably only supported on his roms though.

Sorry, I meant Konikub's themes.
NEED TO TRY ROMS: DONT GO WITHOUT AT LEAST 3 HOURS ON THESE.
myn's warm twopointtwo: insane themeing. blows your mind and other parts (hehe). fast, stable, just very themed and very feature inclusive.
caulkin's evio 2: incredibly fast. this dude is amazing. you will find his 'usb/wifi tether hack, reboot mod, mms limit/compression mod's in almost every rom out there. slightly themed to not look as fugly as the htc version, very good battery, extreme speed, etc etc etc.
ava-froyo z3: this man is quite a coder. he goes deep inside the rom to alter things never touched by other devs, including radio, 4g, memory management, etc. its a hit and miss for some phones, but gets amazing results on others.
cyanogenmod: vanilla aosp, the biggest project on the xda. built on many different phones, huge team, incredible changes, its like a whole new phone. you wont get the same results or features from any other phone on the market. no hdmi (claims its almost done) and FINALLY 4G (in alpha 2 testing, the code for 4g had to be totally rewritten by two guys. thats probably the biggest feat in this phone's history)
miui: a crossover aosp rom that looks almost like the iphone but with the functionality and customizability of android +100. infinite amount of features. this isnt really built on anything... everything is different. a brand new operating system pretty much. worth a flash. some love it, some (like me) dont.
I am currently using this ROM [ROM(S)]CM7-EX.v9, its pretty neat, still has a few minor issues but it's usable and yeah its Gingerbread. No 4G or HDMI.

Well put. I will +1 you on the CyanogenMod. Great stable ROM with tons of customizability and features out of wazoo.
I would also put in a recomendation foe Fresh Evo ROM by Flipz. Maintains a familiar Sense UI but has some nice performance tweaks and removes all of the bloatware. Also has full HDMI and 4G support. Just another simple and user friendly option for custom ROM that does not get too radical.

I like all the responses here and how members try to help, especially the 8th grade kid, lol.
I for one won't flash a rom where any of the features of the phone won't work, despite the fact of the great work all of those guys are doing to bring gingerbread to us, I applaud all their hard work. Whatever rom u flash, make sure u do a full wipe so u can get a clean install, do a back up or nandroid before u start flashing and read, read, read and keep on reading, that's the most important thing, get acquainted with any issues or problems that may arise with the roms u gonna flash so u don't panick and go all monkey if the phone freezes or whatever the situation may be. Finally be ready for the storm, flashing is an addiction hard to control.

I know this has already been said but I just have to agree with Cyanogen. The stable build (6.1.2?) is incredibly nice with plenty to do. On the other hand, Cyanogen7 (i.e. nightlies) are a bit more finnicky (still a superb work in progress). I used the stable build until I had enough courage (newbie myself to android) to start trying the night builds. I really dont want to go back to anything else now, not even the stable. Getting excellent battery life (intermittent tho), great look, very customizable. Def worth a try, if anything
Depends on what you want our of your rom. I tried many, but heres my personal experience.
I went with miui for awhile. Loved the speed and uniqueness. In the end missed everything working perfect.
Went to azrael for awhile. Fastest sense rom in my opinion. Highly recommend if you like sense.
Since I don't like sense, but want stuff to be fully functional, I'm currently on vaelpak. Very fast, great on battery, and the vaelpak settings app makes it very easy to tune to your liking.

[Q] Best ROM for the Wife?

My wife is currently about to enter her last semester of nursing school. She has had an EVO for about 6 months I'd say, which most of that time she was Rooted but on the stock ROM, until she got tired of stuff not working right.
I gave her the Synergy ROM which she took a while to get used to, the only issue she had was text messages not sending, then sending over and over and over. I then convinced her to try CM7, and switched her to Google Voice. Apparently she is getting FC issues, and she claims that battery is just as bad, as well as random reboots. She now wants something that is STABLE above all else, and has battery life that will last her through a day.
What would the best option be? Im opting to go back to Synergy since the texting issue should be fixed with GV, but any way to optimize that battery?
Thanks in advance,
Adam.
Do you have an Airave (sp?)? That will cause the texting issues you describe, at least it does for me and over heard of others having the same problem.
I'd suggest MIUI if she doesn't need 4G, it's been stable for me for almost a year. You have to be careful which build you choose, as some of the newer ones are not stable. If you decide to try it, I can point you towards my favorite build that are known to be stable.
If she does need 4G or just doesn't like MIUI, if say try a close to stock rom. I hear the Mik roms are good, but I've never personally used them. Warm 2.2 was the last Sense rom that I ran. It was a long time ago and is now outdated, but I liked it for the few days I ran it.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
I'd recommend MikG v3.0 or Tommeytomatoes Classic v0.0.5 Finale. She won't have any problems at all and she'll get great battery life as well. Chopsuey kernel pairs up great with MikG.

We dont have an airave, only way the texting issue happened was with the stock messaging app. Even with CM7 it did until we switched to GV.
My wife had evo for little over a year. We tried pretty much all roms, but always go back to stock. If you want everything to work, then stick with last OTA. My recommendation would be stick with stock. Perhaps get an Anker battery from ebay.
Vaelpak GB or vaelpak rc 3.2 are both quality roms

If she wants aosp go with Deck 1.3d with the LEE kernel. That's what I run and I get great battery life and zero fcs.
If she wants sense Mik 3.0, Classic, and Swag out of stock are great and stable. My wife runs mik 3.0 and loves it. She charges her phone about every other day.

I'd say infected rom eternity. sense 3.5. it's what i'm using right now and in my experience it is super stable. i dont think i've had one FC issue in the past few days i've been running it. battery life is decent also.
My wife is running MikG v3.0. Can't go wrong with a MikROM. I wouldn't trust anything else on her phone, because if there are issues, I'll have to hear about it. And Mik's ROMs don't have any.
Thanks guys, already put MikG 3.0 on it, and she loves it.
I actually thought to try it, and this brought me back to Sense. I've been swearing by AOSP roms for a long time now, and this out lasts them and just feels more stable. It might not be as smooth as AOSP, but the stuff that is supposed to work just works without issue.
Have been running this for 2 days now and I think we're set. Thanks again guys!
Have you tried applying the tweaks from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470921
It might make your phone smoother and faster.
.... Double Post....
CM7 with SavagedZen kernel has always been rock-solid for me with fantastic battery life. Add the supercharger script too and it flies. Seems so much faster than any sense based rom and looks great with the ICS theme for ADW

I was getting ready to make a thread to ask this very question when I saw this one.
It seems that the MikG v3.0 is the way to go. Thanks for the tips.
I am used to Samsung phones, so I am a bit rusty on the EVO, so had a few questions..
Should I return to full stock, get the OTA, then apply this ROM?
Any concerns I should watch out for if I do go back to stock and accept the latest OTA, or do you guys recommend another path to get to the MikG ROM?
I got a pretty good handle on modding, was just looking for a basic highlevel overview of things to watch out for, that I may not have run into on my Samsung devices.

There's no reason to do anything related to the OTA prior to flashing MikG. If you already have a custom recovery (RA-supersonic - if it's CWM, that's the first thing you should change), just nandroid, do a full wipe (everything except SD Card), and then flash the ROM. If you need to backup apps, use my backup pro or Titanium Backup on the current ROM.
Go Deck
If you don't mind ditching a Sense interface for AOSP then I would suggest Deck's Gingerbread ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078558.
Just about tops for the two reasons you seem to be looking at... Stability and battery life.
His new ICS ROM has amazing battery life (over 2 days, single charge) but it's not at a daily-driver stage yet.
Good luck!

Thanks, but Sense needs to stay, she is an iPhone type, if it dont look the same, its to much to handle, no matter what other benefits comes from it.
ROFL!!!
EDIT: Thanks for the tips, I updated to the newest RA, installed Mik, and restored data, worked like a champ!!!
Appreciate the help!!
