Hey
Whenever ive had a phone with a usb port in the past ive usually charged it via USB connected to my PC. However, with the desire it takes about 45 mins to improve battery by 1% when connected to pc, whereas is takes about 1 min to do this when connected to AC. Ive never had this with any other phone which is why im wondering whether theres something wrong there
anyone else have this issue?
I'm pretty sure most devices do this.. any I've toyed with have..
it might be slower, but its never been this much slower. In fact, ive just had it plugged into usb for the last hour and the battery has gone DOWN 3%!!!!!
The current that you can draw through a USB port probably isn't as much! can't remember what the USB standard is but it's more that likely a lot lower than the AC charger
Yes, I am experiencing the same thing. On USB 1% every half an hour, on AC like 1% per minute. Still, I don't know what is causing this. The output power of AC and USB are different, but they shouldn't be this much.
is your laptop running on the mains or battery?
is your charging cable original (htc desire) ?
my laptop is running on the mains/AC but i am not using the cable that was originally bundled with the desire....should that make a difference though? Surely a USB cable is a USB cable?
Same here. Very slow on USB.
Wiki says this:
However, many devices require more power than this method can provide, and will not work in this type of hub.
USB current (related to power) is allocated in units of 100 mA up to a maximum total of 500 mA per port.

ive generally always charged my phone via USB and never had this problem with any phone. the desire must be sooo power hungry. Im actually at a stage now where even if i plug it into the USB port, it still loses charge
One usb hub can provide up to 500 miliamps of current, one port just 256. The ac adapter can give you 1000 ma. So do the calculations yourself

i found the htc cable to be more effective than a micro usb one from samsung.
I've charged my phone from my PC loads of times. Takes about twice as long (roughly, I've never actually timed it).
Definitely not 1% per half hour though!
What is your setup and are you doing with the phone whilst it's connected?
With WiFi and 3G and the screen left on, I get +1% every 3.6mins using the PC USB.

no, i definately dont get it charge that quick. Also, for the record, when using gps connected to a car charger, it doesnt ever charge, it only loses charge at a much slower rate (not good for long journeys!) unless i switch the screen off
When its connected to the pc im usually not doing anything with it. If even tried it with the phone switched off before, charged it like this for an hour and then when i turned it back on it had only charged by 2%
what do you want to know about the setup? Could it actually have something to do with the fact im not using the original bundled USB cable? I just cant see that being a factor
something is definitly wrong with either your cable your phone.
Let's try to cancel out one of those factors:
-have you tried using a different able?
I have NEVER used the AC charger, i've always used the usb charging method, and it takes about 2 hours for a half charge.
ill try using a different cable and see what happens. could the fact im charging it off a netbook be a problem? i wouldnt have thought so as i always charged my last phone (touch diamond) off this netbook too
ok, so it seems the USB cable used DOES matter. When using the original one it charges a lot quicker via USB ... AND AC
i didnt realise different usb cables have different power transfer rates....i guess now i do
Do this test.
Try to charge the phone while it's off.
The power controller of the phone needs to split the power between the phone requirements and the charging of the battery.
I think that your phone is drawing to much power so there is very little left for the battery charge.
So 1. test the usb cable 2. test the power consumption of your phone.
I have no problems charging my phone, when it's connected to my desktop.
Use it all the time at work.
My battery usually takes about 8-9 hours to charge (from about 10%, so it's charging a little over 10% per hour). I'm using the USB cable that was in the box, and it's plugged into my laptop. Is this normal? It seems like a ridiculously long time. If I bought a wall charger and used that instead would it charge faster? Or if I used the USB cable but with a desktop instead of a laptop?
Usb will be slow its going to be the same on desktop or laptop. They just don't put out the juice. Wall charger is very fast to charge.
Should be MUCH faster with a wall charger, USB charges are usually quite slow.
EDIT: beat me to it...
Nah it's slow regardless of whether you charge it via USB or wall charger.
It's not the only phone that charges that slowly, e.g. the HTC Touch Cruise had the same issue (but not the HD and HD2).
One method to test this is to plug your phone in and use it heavily (e.g. for web surfing or GPS navigation).
Most phones will still charge the battery then, but the Desire is one of the phones that actually lose charge. It doesn't get enough charging current.
Sucks, but you can't do anything about it. It's a hardware design issue.
Well my phone charges slow as f..... through the usb connected to a computer aswell.
But it charges in like an hour or two when connected to the wallcharger.

Which, as mentioned, is normal.
Hi,
Was reading about this issue in some android-board a few days ago - just can talk for the htc desire, but there is something special in the combination of original usb-cable and original wallcharger!
Only with this combination the desire is loading with 1000mA - if you plug the desire to another wallcharger, even if this also supports 1000mA or more, or to a laptop or a pc, the desire will be loaded with only 500mA.
This would be normal for pc or laptop, as the usb-connectors don't support more - but it is strange that even on wallchargers with 1000mA or more the desire is also loaded only with 500mA!
On the desire you can check this under Settings-Telephone-Battery - if you're connected to pc, laptop or a not-original wallcharger, you can read here: Charging (USB), with the original wallcharger it reads Charging (AC)...
Alright I went to a Verizon store and bought a generic micro USB wall charger and it's A LOT faster. It seems like it takes a little over 3 hours to charge, does that seem about right?
Yeah that sounds about right really. Think mine does a full charge in roughly the same time from almost dead.
Hey everyone
Recently got my HTC One X - loving the phone... Much improved from my HTC Desire!! Very Happy!
When I charged my Desire, I always used a USB extender from the mains plug, then to the original HTC USB cable then to my phone.. This worked for the whole 2 years I owned the phone, and never had any problems with it.
Now, with the HTC One X - I plug in the charger/USB Extender/HTC USB and it doesn't really charge it. Very slow charge, if any, and it worries me. It was on for 5 minutes, and it was still at 23% - the other day when I tried it, it fained 4% in around half hour (maybe more, not really paying attention to the time).
I know that I cannot use my USB Extender with my Asus Transformer TF101 as it is USB 3.0, so it doesnt pull the right voltage, however, after speaking to HTC, they have told me the chargers all pull the same voltage and the same AMP, so there should be no difference!
The old charger is model number TC B250 the new charger is TC B270,
They have the same output 5V -- 1A
When speaking to the guy on HTC Live Chat, he showed me a page on HTCAccessoryStore.com/uk of a spare charger, and the model number is TC B250 - so is the older charger...
The strange thing is it doesnt charge with the USB Extender - These are cheap and got like 3 for 5pound, and will be willing to buy more, as long as they work...
Basically, my question - Does anyone on here use a USB extender when charging their phone? If so, it works fine, or do you have problems like me?
Many thanks, Matt
Well I have just bought (from amazon) a couple of USB 3.0 extenders (as they are confirmed working with Asus Transformer anyway so will use one for that at least!), and will let the thread know the out come... It could just be my dodgy ones that have given up...
In fact, I have only tried with one, will try with the other I have tonight!
Thanks, Matt
I have the same problem. I always use usb extender to be able to have my phone on my bedside table. The first charge I didn't use any extender but the second I did and when the phone hadn't lit green for 4 hours (I was doing other stuff so didn't use the phone) I got suspicious and checked what the battery level was and it was at 27%. So I disconnected the extender just to rule out if that was the problem and it was. I haven't tried a different extender as I don't want to do more bad charges initially until I've done 6-7 proper cycles.
Thanks for the response, I'll let you know how my 3.0 USB extender works, when I get it...
At least we have narrowed it down to the USB extender

One X (probably) draws more power than desire and combined with 1A charger may cause voltage drop at end of extender. Most of USB cables have very thin wires therefore voltage drops more with every inch of cable. It's hard to distinguish which cable is good, which not (most of them) without making some measurements.
Another option is to buy set of USB plug/socket and do it yourself
Hmmm, the last option might be plausable, I might look into that...
So these 3.0 USB extenders may not work? But as I say I can use them with my Asus transformer tf101....

Stick to a single cable between phone and charger, and keep it to no more than about 6 feet long.
Monoprice brand cables with "28/24 AWG" in the specifications can be trusted to do a good job for charging.
When the USB standard came out, 28 gauge wire was specified, with the expectation devices would draw 500ma.
Now we have phones that draw twice the current, and yet a lot of newer micro-USB cables are made with cheaper, smaller 30 gauge wire. Combine that with using longer lengths, and your phone is getting shortchanged.
Monoprice isn't the only brand which offers heavier-gauge charging cables -- but it's a reputable & yet low-priced brand.
Thanks, I will look into them tomorrow... Hopefully available in the UK...

I use KVMSwitchTech for all my USB Extender applications. They have a wide selection of 1.1 and USB 2.0 extender products. I have not used any extenders for a specific application like yours but I think you need a powered extender for your application.
i tried usb extenders on another devices not this one.
and extenders will not charge the phone , only decreases the discharge rate.
i'm not sure if there are high quality extenders that don't reduce the amperage the charger.
but all what i can tell u is that it will ONLY decrease the discharging rate.
Well I've been using the original HTC plug and lead with a USB extender for the last 2 years with my HTC desire... So it does charge, but maybe only the "older technology batteries" from 2 years ago...
Anyway, my 3.0 extenders have been dispatched, hoping for delivery tomorrow and will let you all know the outcome... If not then I will order a 28/24 awg USB extender (maybe even gold plated) and see what happens there.. don't have that brand mentioned in above post available in the UK though, so will be another brand/maybe no name wire....
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
So, my 3.0 extenders have come, and they seem to be charging fine
The phone has been on charge now for 20 minutes and has gained around 8% (that seems right doesnt it, not too slow?) battery which is more than the 2.0 extenders were doing... It has gone from 29% to 38% in 25 minutes now, with use (sending messages, screen on)...
Maybe they carry a larger voltage down the line, maybe they are better wires inside, i just don't know, but seem to work...
I got them from Amazon, they are cheap, and also work with my Asus Transformer too - the link is here
Could anyone who is charging their One X now see if that is about right, the 10% in 25 minutes, or from 30% to 40%, and let me know if theirs has been like 10 minutes instead of 25...
Thanks a lot, Matt
Hi all:
I just did a test on the maximum charging current of the One X using current measurement equipment, and it shows that the One X does not draw above 460mA of current while charging.
With this value, i suspect that the One X limits max charging current at 500mA, which means 3 things:
1) Using any previous generation USB charger (750mA or 850mA or 1A) is good enough. Attempting to use the iPad's charger (rated at 2A) WILL NOT get you faster charging time.
2) When using battery draining applications, the charging current may not be enough for you to both CHARGE and USE the Phone. Thus it might be a better idea to give your One X some dedicated charging time.
3) Some computer USB ports may specify 500mA of output current, but there are many times the available current is less than that. On my USB port, the charging current is only about 300mA at times. So it is better to use a dedicated charger if you have it available. Having that said, however, it is still ok to charge the One X with a USB port at 300mA, just that charging will take longer.
That's all I have to report. Useful information for all.

I've had mine charge at 780mAh+ before. 1amp HTC charger. Charge rate slows down at the last 20-30% or so. So from 70%-100% battery, charge rates normally slow to about 450mAh.

i tried to use the charger for htc chacha and hd2..
both does not work.. red light will light up but after a while it will go off and the phone does not charge..
Charging my HOX while the phones working hard eventually (after say, 5 mins), causes the charge LED to flash green/red. I've had this twice now, once while playing a 720P HD film, and once when playing Glowball.
Both times the phone was very hot, so i'm not sure if the LED thing was to indicate that the battery was too hot to charge, or that the charger could not supply enough power to charge and power the phone at the same time.

Original charger gives me 650/750mA (lowers at the end)

If the charger cannot cope with the discharge from the game, a pop up message actually appears. If it's blinking means it's too hot. Try not to do anything intensive the last 20-30% remaining (meaning at 70-100% battery).
Nice info thanks

Same here... I am using the Atrix 4G (US) charger, it does not charge the phone. The charger gives output of 850mA. It does charge when plugged into the laptop, but I think it will take very long that way.
*edit for posterity*
after a while (I did it when battery had charged to 20%), I could connect the Moto US charger, and it would show as "AC". It would not want to charge through it when the battery was really low (2%), but it would charge via USB in that case. Weird behavior, IMO.
USB limited to 500. AC limited to 1A.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
If you want maximum speed of charging (AC charging) you need:
1A charger with shorted D+ and D- pins (eg, original HTC charger).
iPad charger probably doesn't have these pins shorted, so in this case phone will see it as USB charging (you can check it in settings->battery) and will limit charging current to 500mA. Also lot of aftermarket car chargers will work only in USB mode despite they are able to supply 1A.
Here you can find some info on USB Charging Ports (shorted D+- pins):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Charging_ports_and_accessory_charging_adapters
When charger is "USB", it will not draw more than 500mA from the charger, and usually it will not charge at all (because the current draw with screen on is higher than 500mA).
When charger is AC, it seems to draw 1000mA - but this is still too low to charge while phone is doing anything, as it will draw 700mA and charge ~250mA top.
I hope this can be tuned in kernel, because it sucks, I also hope that power source can be AC (and not battery - look in dmesg when charger is connected), because battery gets too hot when under load...

Can you post a potential list of car charger which are working at 1mA according to you?
I've only tested few devices:
Extrememac external battery for iPhone/iPad (max 2A) had pins not shorted - USB charging mode on One X (500mA).
Some cheap car adapters - max 1A (according to spec) - USB charging mode on One X.
To fox this problem you should prepare a USB extension cable or micro-usb cable with shorted D+ and D- pins and it should be recognized as AC adapter. I think that also some old HTC phone chargers might come with shorted pins in cable already, but don't know which...
What about the official HTC car charger?

Yes, that one will charge at the full rate.
There is no list of known good chargers - it's down to luck or a recommendation from someone who found one. You can be sure that any charger advertised as "iPhone, iPad or iPod" compatible will NOT charge your One X at the full rate.
I found one recently in a local petrol station shop. It was £5. I took it apart to have a look and the D+ and D- pins are correctly connected together (via a low value resistor) so it charges at the full rate.
So, I might suggest you look for the cheapest Chinese car charger you can.

Bingo. I also noticed that when I have the screen on at 100% brightness, GPS and Bluetooth on, i.e. in the car, the USB charger cannot even keep up with the battery drain.
On top of that, the battery gets really hot.
I did not have any of these issues with my SGS2, and frankly, I think it's very disappointing. One should at least be able to stay on the same battery level while doing nothing too fancy and on USB inside a car.

There are a lot of factors in the charging current. When you charge, the battery will heat up during the process, especially towards the end of the charging cycle. If you are using your phone at the same time and cause even more heat and charging may slow down to prevent overheating. Also, as mentioned prior, charging slows down as capacity is reached. 100% brightness, GPS, and Bluetooth all on has always walked the fine line of just barely keeping up on my past phones on a 500 mA USB charger. On top of that, this phone is a lot more powerful than an SGS2 and the T3 and big screen produce more heat which may be slowing your charging more.
The problem is a lot of cheap chargers that the phone thinks are USB chargers, not AC chargers, thus causing them to only charge at 500 mA. If you have a proper charger, or a properly modified charger, you should get more like 1A, assuming conditions are right.
In the past I've used Battery Monitor Widget from the Play store to show my charging current on a widget, as well as track and graph battery use, charging current, temperature, etc. Might want to give it a try if you're more interested in charging details.
Im using my htc desire charger and cable (the one that splits in two). It works fine for me but it does take a while to get a full charge. Should i use the charger and cable that came with the phone?
Hi
I have a few other normal micro USB cables and when I try to use them with the standard HTC plug, the phone shows its charging but the percentage never goes up. In fact it drains even though it says its charging. Why is this? I've tried two new cables with the official wall charger but I get the same. I really want to be able to use a longer cable.
Any ideas? If it helps I'm running Franco r11 kernel.

I charge mine with a nokia cable which came with e7.no problem here.
all cables are the same, unless they are "charge only" cables (I got one like this for my Nvidia glasses)
it will not drain more than 500mA from USB. But the charging logic is acting weird sometimes so I think you just saw it glitching with other cable and not with the original one. It will drain with both if you use it in the meantime, try it.
Hmmm. I got the battery widget app which shows + mv when charged with the official HTC cable. When I plug in the other two miscellaneous cables the discharge rate is negative under the same conditions. Maybe its the kernel?

My phone currently charges with different USB cables.
I have a blackberry short cable (for when I'm at client sites) and I use my old SE cables to charge and even do file transfers..
Have you ran the charger test in the HTC Phone Diagnostics??
From my experience this phone is picky as hell when it comes to what charger it wants you to use. I ended up using the one it comes with. It charges the fastest.
Go to the play store and download battery monitor widget. Its really helpful! Shows you how fast it drains the temperature all in graphs.

Its got nothing to do with the micro usb cables, there has been another power management update that was released last week, so HTC have told me, as mine sometimes doesnt charge more than 23%-29%, but when rebooted it goes to 63% and sometimes takes 12 hours for a simple charge, but was told it can take up to 4 weeks for the networks to distribute it. Im waiting for it too as my software is still on 1.28.771.9.
Im on 3 uk so it will probably never happen, but im currently in dispute with them because of faulty phone.
Hi I'm having the same problem with a longer USB cable.
I have a 3 meter cable from ebay which I've been using to charge my Desire HD for the past year without a problem.
When I tried this with my new One X it will not charge. The charge light is on but battery level decreases. I've left the phone sitting with the screen off for a while, but no charge.
When I tried it with the USB cable that came with the phone it charges fine, even whilst using the phone, with the same wall charger plug.
I've tried it with the wall charger plug that came with the One X and the one that came with the Desire HD, both same results:
Desire HD charges with both short USB and long USB cable.
One X will only charge with the short USB cable.
Is there a quality difference in the cables, or maybe a length restriction?
My One X is running Stock Android 4.0.3 (1.29.206.11)

I've just bought another 3 meter micro USB cable of higher quality, this one stated it would work with HTC One series phones. This cable charges my phone perfectly. The software on my phone hasn't changed from above.
Somehow it seems the One X, and maybe all other One series phones, are particularly sensitive to the type of USB cable? I didn't realise this could be an issue!
weird. i would have thought it was the increased resistance in the cable that was making it charge slower/drain
maybe its literally the quality of the cable, better materials, equals lesser resistance over a longer distance, therefore why the new cable will work and the other doesn't?
