straight link to king's kernels - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

PSA: i dont know him and hell i havent even donated yet (though I should). So apparently he got banned. I don't know why. It's said he posted links to paid ROM sites, I'm not sure what that even means.
Regardless, I've found his kernels to be the best and here's the straight link to download them: People should still be able to access them. Im kinda concerned whether just linking it to his site which has banner ads like every other place makes this thread a bad idea.
hopefully he and XDA can solve their or explain how he violated their TOS. I really dont care if he posts links to paid stuff, the kernels that work far better than anything else are free to download. he seems to get a rough treatment here straight from the beginning.

You have to realize, the dude is pissed off now.
Do you want to download a virus kernel? If so download away...

that never even ocurred to me because that would be such a dumb idea if he wanted to go that route. if people are worried about that i can re-host BFS 6, 9 and 11. but i cant imagine what would possess someone to **** over people who actually wanted to benefit from his work over a 3rd party medium like the XDA forum. Maybe im naive, has that happened before?

WTF EC05 in the developer section

So let me get this straight, there is now a developer that has EC05, but you have to register to get it. I tried and get Access denied when trying to download. On a side note EC05 has been released and there aren't 10 mirrors up of it yet? I don't know what is going on with the politics over there, I don't really care or follow it that closely. But what I do know is when I hear that an operating system is leaked I come here to get it. All of a sudden that's not going to happen any more without hoops to jump through, registration and a nag screen for a donation? I wonder if the guys in the Evo forums put up with this am-mature hour BS?

Unfortunately, I've seen this happen everywhere. It is not a Samsung and/or Epic specific issue... Find it hard to believe that with all the different ROM.s for Evo that there isn't the occasional crap about who took what from whom without credit (not that this is this problem). Here, we have someone who got a leak from an inside source and to protect the source, he's done things somewhat differently. Do I agree, well not really sure...I don't want to register to get something (and he is NOT charging) but then again, I had to register to post and get stuff here... So, not that big of a deal. I'm totally happy with ViperRoms BUT I understand what Mammon88 has done and why...but I can see XDA's point too. Just the latest round of politics! If not this, then it would be something else.
Either the stock or bonsai needed off it will work at this point. I'm just shocked that politics are causing a delay in EC05 stock to be put up on these forums. After all it's already OTA at this point. At this point I'll probably wait until tomorrow for an update.zip. I just figured by history it would have already been made available.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Mammon88 can't release the EC05 he has because the digital fingerprints are on the file which would lead back to the person who leaked it in the first place. So the only way to get stock EC05 is to wait for Sprint's release. Glad I'm running Bonsai 4.0.0 right now as I don't want to wait.
just to be honest here, if Mammon can remove the 'fingerprint' from the leaked copy, and put it on Bonsai 4.0, then why can't he release the stock version, fingerprint removed? Didn't he already attempt to do this, but the thread was shut down due to linking to the Bonsai site, which requires registration (not that a mirror is still in the locked thread anyways)? Im pretty sure the registration process does not remove said fingerprint itself.
I have to point out that I think he/they have the right to do WHATEVER they want with the leaked version, as it's not open source, it's a leak... BUT, the whole website membership business is disappointing, yes, it seems just an inconvenience, but if there is/will be paid premium support... it really doesn't belong on here, then does it? Honestly I am just sick of the drama, and apologetics for this whole thing, and I cant imagine what would have happened had it been Noobnl who had the leak, and then proceeded to make such a process... half the members would be asking for his head, no? I don't feel entitled to a thing, but pressure for donations, not to mention having to register for yet another website is not in the spirit of this site.
Why not just post a no-strings attached link here, or even on the Bonsai site...?
I guess demand drives things, as the wait for EB13 prompted half the site to revert to DI18 just to get the OTA and get the update.zip... now it would seem there are far fewer people doing this. /rant

I was just out at the Sprint store the other day talking about just this same thing. Decided to wait a week or so and see what else falls out of the tree. Sprint has lots of new android stuff coming out in the next few weeks.
Mammon and Randy font owe anything to you guys on here. If you can't take 2 mins to register to get a FREE download that they spent HOURS doing then you shouldn't have it. Be a little more appreciative of what people do.

Politics aren't causing anything. Maybe you didn't mean to come across the way you did but it comes across as "entitled". Bonsai is NOT based on the OTA. They don't have it. There is NOTHING to leak as you put it. If it was then we could flash the modem and not be required to odin. To the best of my knowledge the OTA hasn't hit yet. When it does you will see the posts start popping up. Until either be patient or use one of the EC05 ROMs already available.

Absolutley ridicilous. You all need to chill out relax. And respect the devs who bring you these roms for free. You act like its owed to you or something. Do u not realize these devs do this on there dime in there own time. Relaaaaaaaaaax. Be patient. This has become so ridicilous no one has respect or appreciates wha they do. I thought links to external sites for software\roms was against the rules, e.g. keep everything in one place. (However I can be completely wrong)
Im getting my touch on Monday and am super excited to see root, but having come from an Epic 4G (horrible community) plagued with people selling roms, closed threads and trolling..
I just dont want to see that happen here with this phone.
Perhaps the name *epic* is jinxed.
If I could request one thing, that would be to post a direct link here in the OP.

It is against the rules to link to a site where you are required to register to download. You don't for the ACS site, so it doesn't break any rules.

Latest on CM7 on the Epic 4G Touch?

I know I'm about to get flamed all to hell for asking this... and yes I searched but not found anything recent on this forum.
I've heard rumblings that there is an Alpha out there from the Cynaogen Devs, but haven't actually seen a link or a way to get in on that...
We all know about the bubby mod, but it doesn't look like it has moved in a while...
Anyone got anything new to report about CM7 on the SS2E4GT?

Amazing, we have the best Sprint phone out there right now but no cutting edge development. Might push me towards the Galaxy Nexus which I really don't want to go to because it isn't really much of an upgrade over the E4GT.
Haven't seen anything posted recently about CM7. Seems like it is at a standstill. People say he is in IRC all the time but I haven't heard any more progression with the Rom so not sure what is going on in there.
I know the next thing to fix was GPS but doesn't seem like that happened. Also put out a date of the 15th for ICS, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for that one...Probably a bad move for him to put a date out there...
yeah, I am kinda surprised that the CM team hasn't given this phone the attention that a lot of others have gotten, especially, since this is the premier phone on sprint, and probably the best all around android phone out right now...
Not for nothing but I am quite sure if you really want to know the answer to your question you can go over to that forum and post a thread. I believe someone will answer you.
I am quite sure it will get done eventually since so many people want it and this phone is one of the best out now. I don't think worrying about is going to make it come faster though. Honestly outside of GPS and wifi tethering it runs pretty damn good.
Although some may not have faith in the kid, you must remember he has still done more than you or I have done to this point. Unless of course you have done more and if so let us know....lol

I agree with that statement
It's been a little over a week since the last alpha was released. This kid seems to work in spurts. He probably has school to deal with as well.
Aside from the GPS and 50%-working haptic and the governors besides ondemand being a little off kilter it's a solid kang and stable as hell. If you can go without GPS It's ready to go and fast as hell. Games work, sound, bluetooth, DSPmanager (yay), etc etc etc.
Now...take it over to the other forum. As odd as it sounds the rules are the rules, this conversation doesn't belong here.

Discussion of development that isn't on XDA is prohibited. You can say bubby and rootzwiki all day long. Hell, you can even tell them to go to rootzwiki to find bubby's CM7 kang. But discussing Bubby's CM7 development at rootzwiki--discussing the rom along finer points--is where we went astray.
Considering all of the drama involved (on both sides) I don't think it's fair or realistic to make a judgement of who is wrong and who is right...but do I think that's unreasonable to discuss this in the general forum? No.
...but I don't make the rules.
For the record, didn't mean to start the whole drama about he who shall be not whatever'd.
Just wanted to know if anyone knew of progress made by dev's on this forum or had heard anything from Cyanogen that is more... shall we say... official/reliable/etc.

I dont want to go back and forth, but General is general info about the device. I recall everyone discussing Deck's cm7 kang for the Evo 4G in the Evo forums, he had no thread here at the time. Then a thread was even made in the dev section called "another cm7 rom", the thread was made by a member not Deck, it wasnt deleted. So whats OK and what isnt comes down to who is OK and who isnt I guess, not whether it benefits the community....

Backdoors in ROMs?

This might seem like a silly question, but does anyone here worry about there being backdoors or code in the custom Roms like Vicious JB, CM9 nightlies, Liquid Smooth, etc... that is malicious?
My biggest concern is someone getting their hands on my gmail account credentials and banking info. I've searched and not seen this addressed anywhere. Aren't we putting a lot of faith into developers and groups we don't know anything about? We operate on the assumption the code is safe because everyone is using it, and the devs and groups have been around a long time.
Just wondering what thoughts people have on this...
That's why you don't flash a ROM by unknown developers and/or from unknown or unregulated forums. XDA is pretty good about keeping things legit. Always read feedback. As much as these people pick and poke at the ROMs it wouldn't be long if foul play was found.
All in all it was the carriers that were key logging and data mining not any dev on XDA.

if you have root, and install any apps that need root. any of these apps can potentially steal any kind of info from you that it wanted. same with non market applications(non root and non rooted devices) that you install and dont pay attention to what it can access.
It may be just me, but I wont do any banking online from both my phone and desktop. I normally only buy things online from eBay and Amazon. PayPal is pretty secure too for online purchasing.

If you think about it, all computer programs have enormous power. They can already read/write anything into non-restricted parts of your hard drive, or even erase it all (though this may take some time in which you can shut it down). Android has more restricted privileges (it has to tell you, upon installation, that it'll be given permission to read your sd card), but these are still highly general.
And a program with administrator/root privileges, can do literally anything.
A rom is basically like a rooted program, so, short of reading all the code and compiling it yourself, there's no way to be sure that it won't do literally anything.
That might not be the answer you want, but that's all there is to it. All you can hope to do is mitigate that risk by installing the bare minimum, most trusted of sources, and it's up to you to decide how much risk is too much.
Maybe anti-virus helps (I scan all apks), but it's a shot in the dark as far as I'm concerned.

This might seem like a silly question, but does anyone here worry about there being backdoors or code in the custom Roms like Vicious JB, CM9 nightlies, Liquid Smooth, etc... that is malicious?

There was recently an article on just this subject. I don't worry too much about it, I keep with what I regard as trusted ROMs. I don't bank on my phone, the worst you can do is buy some **** from amazon or eBay and my credit card keeps me safe from fraud, so I don't care too much.
You are right, these aren't the answers I would love to see!
Is the article mentioned the one on ZTE, or custom ROMs? Do you have a link?
Has there ever been a documented case of a popular custom ROM stealing login credentials?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I'd worry less about backdoors and more about test key signed apps making their way onto your system and stealing data.
A risk for many aosp Roms because they use test keys.
You can always download the cm9 source code yourself and compile it if your worried.

The only ROM I'd be worried about is MIUI.
Yeah gotta watch out for dem chineses.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Honestly, it's a valid concern. I'm really not worried at all about such things on official ROMs - Carrier IQ was a slight worry but I wasn't really bothered. Monitoring any data I care about would put a company out of business. However, unofficial ROMs make me nervous.
I think your question can be answered best in Q&A where questions are posted
specifically this thread:

Thanks

Why's everyone so rude?

Why's everyone rude here? Developers of ROMs don't spend hours of hard work just to be dissed. Yo. They do it because its something they mildly enjoy/want to do and wanna contribute. Being rude makes them want to not do this for us. You all can feel free to learn C, Java, C++ and the Linux command line and make us a flawless build. Although most of us aren't really capable of this. Myself included. So next time you wanna complain because something doesn't work, remember, they have lives too. Bug reports are fine, just be respectful! You all watched the noob video, right?

What I really love is when someone fubars their device because they don't even belong trying to modify them and then they get upset noone can help because their lack of reading directions/warnings has left them with a brick.
This site should be pay-for-use for non devs, that would eliminate a major amount of 1 time posters and all trolls.

Most horrible idea I've heard lol. If this happened, no one would come here.....
Also, IN MY OPINION, some devs are too sensitive. There are people in this world who are going to complain and/or expect things they didn't work for themselves. It's just how it is. If I were a dev and people were complaining to me, I'd tell them "go learn how to code your own, then come talk to me." And then go on with my day without it phasing me. I wouldn't quit the work I love and stop sharing things because that one person out of the hundreds decides to complain and doesn't like the way I'm doing things. I've seen it happen, and it's pathetic in my opinion.

I did love it, but not anymore, its been driven out of me by countless insults and utter stupidity that seems to occur constantly. I know its your opinion "some" are to sensitive, but its a personal work I'm sharing, having someone pm me that its an utter waste of time to flash because its a broken pile of....etc is a very personal insult and I see no reason to continue when I get responses like that for my time and effort.
Also, I'm not required to share anything I do, hell I can go pay per build if I feel like it. I did this because people wanted it, and I could provide it, that's all.
Its not making me stop doing something I love, it made me stop loving what I do.
I'm not sure if you dev or not, but really, until you deal with it yourself, you don't really understand where we come from. Some say go f yourselves, others just vanish, and then there's some like me that despite being burned out keep trying make the community happy (and mostly succeeding) and just get to a point where its not worth the insults anymore.
Also I'm sure there are a lot more devs that have been doing this longer then a few months and are maybe used to it.
I don't even own an a100 so its not like I just happened to have made something and shared it, I built it just for the community, I'll never run it myself.
Call it pathetic if you wish, but in my opinion you dunno what you're talking about.

I go through this almost every day actually. Maybe not making ROMs or developing programs for phones, but I have unruly people who comment and criticize my work all day long. It all goes in one ear and out the other because I know that some people are just like that and aren't thankful. I also know that I am good at what I do and that over the past few years I have pleased A LOT more people than I've disgruntled. I guess it has a lot to do with how different people cope with different things. With me, logic trumps emotion and it's very hard for me to take someone saying " your work sucks and you're a [email protected]" seriously lol. If someone pmed me and said my ROM is "an utter waste of time to flash and its broken," guess what? There's a delete button or I would just ignore it. There's going to be people like this no matter what field of work you're in.
I may not be a dev, but I do know how you feel. Alas, I'd like to say that I personally appreciate and respect you and every other dev here. They do great work for free most of the time and I honestly have no place to complain and neither do these other people. However, they shouldn't be discouraged and want to quit. Whatever happened to the "sticks and stones" rule?
Pay per build? That sounds great and I don't know why no one is doing this. If I were a dev I'd be all over making money for my hard work. Hell, I'd pay for a good ROM. It's totally worth it. But then again, it would be hard to regulate because there would need to be refunds given and stuff like that if people aren't happy lol you just never win as a dev, do you?

Yes sadly everyone does want something different from any ROM, one will never satisfy all.
Not to get personal but what do you do for work that would subject you to that kind of...feedback? And I just noticed haole lol. Not sure if its what I'm thinking, but I was born in Hawaii, I'm hapa.
Anyways as I said I take it all quite personally, especially now as it was basically a favor for someone who asked me to come back.
That said, on topic again, some people just don't understand the amount of work involved and how calling it trash (this is quite edited ofc) is almost the same a calling me the same thing. They also don't care about the time it takes and just expect it to be given to them, or demand features or additions without considering it may be past the dev's abilities or desire to even do it. It comes down to they think they're entitled to it, when and how they want it, but seen willing to learn to do it themselves.
Also the whole internet mentality of its a screen name, not a person. Insulting pio_masaki isn't the same as standing in front of me and saying the same thing. I disagree with this mentality and prefer to consider it a person, not a screen name. Strangely I'm perfectly fine ignoring some a hole insulting me in person, yet take it personally about a ROM lol.
And pay per build would be quite difficult to implement, especially because it would need tailored per user, the time wouldn't be worth the cost to me, or the cost wouldn't be worth it for the user, I mean figure $10 an hour to build a ROM to be worth my time. User wants a cm10, tablet ui, memory bar added. Takes me 6 hours to implement the changes, sync, build. Would you pay $60 for a ROM for an a100? Not likely. I don't mean you personally, but the average user. They'll just use B1 instead lol. Maybe if I came and installed it for you or something lol

Felt my rant belonged here. And a note on it, this is not aimed at A100 users, but everywhere on XDA.
Civatio-Retired
Pio-Retired
Linuxsociety-Retired
Waydownsouth-MIA/Retired
These were the major players when it came to ROM development on the A100.
And the general public has annoyed/angered most of them to the point of retirement or quitting.
What is wrong with people today?
I used to love chatting on forums with random people with common interests. Than I came to XDA. I'm not talking to anyone specific here OK, but in general, I've never met a mass gathering of people with common interest that act so hateful, childish, ungrateful, and reduce themselves to petty squabbles on a nearly hourly basis. And I am guilty of these acts of well. We all just need to step back in most situations and ask ourselves can I do this? or aren't I hear to learn and help?
I guess there's no point to my rant...
Looks like it's time to teach myself how to atleast update source.
I'm not talking about an expensive fee, ever $5 per year would be enough to keep the trolls away, Many years ago people said they'd never pay for torrent sites no look at the state of torrenting. Newsgroups are flourishing while free torrent sites are few and far between and their content is lackluster at best.
I would also be up for allowing devs to have ban powers in their own build threads. These guys do a service 99.9999% of us can't do, they do it for free and they get abuse for it. Keep your device stock if you can't act like an adult for one, and don't modify your device if you are unable to handle the real possibility of it going horribly wrong.

Depends on the individual...I completely agree with this. It's just been my personality since I was young (grew up in Brooklyn, NY...you NEED tough skin there). If I'm doing something and one or two don't like it, oh well, I know there's almost 1,000 (in this case a **** load of people!) who do! But oh well...everyone is different...I would find more satisfaction in the fact i'm contributing to the longevity of a device and others are using MY **** somewhere in this world and enjoying it.

I try to be kind as possible, I would imagine how all the negative insults would add up and get annoying after a while. I am pretty young and only know enough to use things you devs make and post on here and that's only because i follow directions. But I would like to learn all this stuff and become a dev. Its gotta be pretty cool knowing you make things that hundreds of people use daily

If you charged per download not as much people would keep downloading every build you put out. I've used almost every single one of the builds you put out, the only other persons ROMs I have used is civato. And if you charged per download I know I wouldn't nearly use as much of your builds as I have. I would only download one of your builds every once in a while, and I don't even know how I would pay you since I don't even have a credit card or debit card or whatever you use to pay online. But if you could manage to keep the amount of downloads you have now while making people pay you would make a lot of money!
