[MOD] ALL circle NOTIFICATION bar. CONCEPT - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

Hi all,
The other day when I was having a drink or two & looking at the screen of my SGS, I got this brilliant idea. I am an architect & the architect in me said, DO CIRCLES.
From Top-Right, Circle Clock, Circle Battery, Circle Signal Strength, Circle 3G Strength, Circle Bluetooth.
I asked franklin01 if he could help me with Circle 3G, he has shown me an example here.
To any developer thats interested in developing this further, Give credit to franklin01 first, then to me for posting an idea that will make your SGS screen a better looking one.
Well, I am asking everyone if they have any ideas. Bring out the designer in you & suggest ways to improve this idea. I will start posting all your ideas in the first post. Thanks.
I am posting all the png's related to my post. If I have missed a few, tell me.
Unleash the designer in you, lets see some results.
- EarlZ - Nice but if there was a mode id love to see my signal strength in dBM instead of the boring bars.

This is just a test, it is awful but it works so if someone want to try/edit/make something beautiful feel free to do.
How to:
Get system\framework\framework-res.apk from your phone (using adb or root explorer).
Open it using 7zip (or winrar but 7zip is better to repack).
Extract res\drawable-hdpi\
Edit png you need (open to see which one is)
Then put things back to the framework-res.apk (using 7zip, drag and drop modified files)
Put back framework-res.apk to your phone (using adb, root explorer or update.zip method).
Here is my moded all circle awful mod... tested on JP6/JPM and the update works with CW and 2e recovery (rename to update.zip).
WARNING:
Can damage your phone as usual (well if you have JP6/JPM it works fine, no worries) but can also damage your eyes ! (it is just a test, I am no artist and this mod is awful... should not edit with mspaint)

1-NOV-2010--9-00pm-IST.
Work started. I have only 66 files that need to be modified. I am going with white, light-grey, dark-grey concept for the first attempt. All ideas are welcome.

The website designer in me says, not everything looks good in a circle.....
But on a serious note, a well conceived idea.
Hopefully this catches up.....
Oh. By the way, if you have the PSD's, do send them over and I will try make them just a wee bit better if you like. Or I could design some and send them across anyway.

I have ideas

i will try this
good job

Well this was just a test, I used circle battery mod png to do, but I think a designer can do a better work than I did... (obviously)
Work on it, and edit everything you can, I saw the "puzzle" picture in the file so there is a lot of things to play with
Also I ll try to figure if it is possible to unpack/repack the framework-res.apk from the phone using some .sh scripts so we could manage mods directly from the phone (add or remove custom icon without having to copy an entire framework-res.apk to get some space.)

All the png's are on the first post unmodified.

I am starting editing the png's BUT want someone to confirm if THIS list of files is complete.

Do you work in CorelDRAW? I have drafted the design outlines in AutoCAD for accuracy, imported into CorelDRAW for joining the curves, & the template is ready.
We can work together.

Oops....
My bad for the late reply. Was terribly busy with a few deadlines.
To your question about Corel Draw. Sorry pal. No Corel for me. Pure Adobe stuff. But since you have the PNG's attached, I should be able to make something up over the weekend (perhaps). All still tentative for the next 5 - 6 days, but the concept is interesting and would like to chip in to it.
Cheers....

Just wondering instead of bars/circle indicators can we show the raw signal like -89dbm

I am not quite sure how that can be done on Android. I had that after jailbreaking my iphone for quite some time.
Anyone who understands dBm, I am sure, will find that nifty. Let me see if I can get something worked out over the weekend. Was planning to take a couple of days off to design a theme for myself anyway.
Perhaps a few pointers from you could help. Will the "Status" under "About Phone" help? That shows the Signal Strength in dBm.

From my own understanding the phone bases the graphical bars on the raw dbm measurements, like example -100 to 89 = 1bar.. Signal Widget also shows the raw dbm numbers.
EDIT:
Thats what I mean the dbm showed after "About Phone" should be reflected on the notification bar.. if its possible and not bars.. well thats just me.

Hi thanks for coming forward to help. the signal strength can be shown within the circle as dBm if possible.
Anyway, I am posting a jpg of my draft, see if it helps.

I dont think it is possible but you can try:
Download apktool http://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/
exe and bat: http://code.google.com/p/android-ap...ol-install-windows-2.2_r01-3.tar.bz2&can=2&q=
apktool.jar: http://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/downloads/detail?name=apktool1.3.2.tar.bz2&can=2&q=
Extract everything in a folder.
run cmd
cd *apktoolfolder*
apktool.bat d framewor-res.apk framework_extract
(to extract apk file)
(change things)
apktool.bat b framework_extract framework-res-mod.apk
(to rebuild the apk)
then use adb or rootexplorer to push your modded apk.
The thing is that there is no stat_sys_signal.xml (like stat_sys_battery.xml to manage how battery is shown) I tried to add one using settings from the battery xml but after phone reboot I am stopped by a black screen, even after wipe/reset so maybe my rebuild failed or maybe the stat_sys_signal.xml I added messed up the whole framework.
Best we can do atm is to edit signal png to show average dbm since 0 bar means -100, 1 bar means -89, 2 bars means - something etc...
Also if keeping the circle concept I doubt -89 dbm written inside a circle will be readable.
(working on aiork atm but at next kernel compiling I will try to look at this topic since compiling on a netbook takes age...)
Keep it up, it can be awesom.

[THEME] Megaman (Hv1.5A2SD)

Had so many ideas floating around in my head about this one I couldn't help but use my day off yesterday to throw it together. Compiled JrBourque's blue VK for this build. worked out pretty well =)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/dt5v4iytg2f/Hv1.5_Megaman_A2SD_final.zip
This is the pre-status bar version. That's my next step and I'll likely be posting an update to it w/ the status bar and notification background modded to match. Then i think I might take a few days off lol (aside from posting the Gambit theme once my homeboy tinkers w/ the clock for me). I haven't stopped since I started working on my Amazing Spider-Man theme nearly 2 weeks ago lol.
More screenshots...
Awesome. I love megaman. Great work with the icons!

Thanks =). It was deathly slow at my work the other day and I was playing Megaman 2 on my Dash and got all kinds of ideas and inspiration. Couldn't shut my brain off until I saw the project completed lol.
Hey that music widget needs to re-signed thats why in port it's off.
Keep up the good work! Not my style but looking good.

Droppin the megaman theme out of no where, without so much as a warning! ?!??!! That's boarder line illegal

Resigned? I've never had to sign anything other than the update.
Adding the guide lines using either 9patch or if you know how to do it using CS3 and signing the .9.png using eclipse. Thats what i am talking about as far as signing.
great theme, can u port it to JF 1.5?

yeah I spent about 3-5 hours trying to get eclipse to work right. Once I figured that out I spent another 2-3 hours trying to master the skill of editing in 9patch, following the steps precisely but just couldn't get it to look right =L It was too foreign to me and I just ended up giving up in frustration. It seems what the image looks like is variable on where you place the markers on the top and left columbs. Just couldn't get the image to look right no matter what I tried. And yeah... was following damnitpud's instructions. =( I guess I'm just not naturally inclined for editing in 9patch as some others might be.
But I'm pretty okay w/ the MP3 player as long as the inner isn't stretching out of the body or anything like that. When I copy the file from a Haykuro G build into the 1.5 as I have w/ this one, it just seems to take the same shape as the default mp3 player and that looks aight by me since I can't seem to comprehend 9batch editing he he. Thanks for the feedback man.
I've seen some of your work and work by others on here and the graphic design elements of the themes puts mine to shame lol. I'm just really inpsired to make themes based on sources of influence, like Spider-man, Megaman etc. etc. =) I keep it real basic compared to most but I have fun with it and that's all that really matters in the end I guess.
Aight. Got the Statusbar done. Was tempted to dive deeper and make all the notification icons blue as well... But it looks good as is and I don't think I'd have the time to mod the 60+ images required to acheive that end lol.

Thanks to the help of Manup... I FINALLY have a semi-sound comprehension of editing the stretchable images (IE the images that are used for the music widget and VK among other things). Thus I'm currently working on making a custom music widget, and might change up the notification are a lil more before I'm completely finished. Once I am ill prolly make an attempt to port it to JF. If its as easy as pasteing over all my modded apks into a JF build it should be a snap (any insight/input on this from anyone else on here would be much appreciated =)).
This theme is looking nice. I know my bro would love it. Is there any way you can make one of Zero? I tend to like more the Z-Zaber than the Buster, lol..
just my .2 cents..

update -
Music player skinned. Notification background changed out. I cleaned up the image on the menu background so it's not so obvious that it's tiled and looks a LOT cleaner now. I thought that image looked a lot better than the one I was previously using for the notification background so I used it there instead as well. Here's the updated link -

Battery icon with numbers, and 1% fix - tilt 2

I have looked around for a fix that will show the battery level in 1% increments....but nobody will confirm whether this works for the tilt 2 without causing problems. Should I just assume that if something works with WM6.1 it will work with 6.5?
Also, it is so stupid to not have a better battery icon...is there a way to replace it with one that actually shows a freaking number? I don't want anything fancy, and I don't want to install a pack that replaces ALL my icons. Anyone?
EDIT:
Just thought of this. Does anyone know how to change the colors on the top start bar, and bottom start bar in tf3d? I was thinking of wanting them both transparent, but that might make the stop icons hard to see....maybe just the bottom tranparent.....hell, I guess I could pick a dark background and make them both tranparent.
Anyway....anyone?
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-ariel-battery-monitor-v1-6-2.html maybe this would help? i've used it and it doesn't replace any icons. it stays at the top bar. you can move it to cover the battery area or just leave it by the start logo

Not really in interested in flashing a whole new ROM just for this. The ROMS are nice, but none of them are 100% perfect....I don't want to deal with radio's....I don't want to deal with some of my keyboard buttons not working...I don't want to deal with getting some strange ATT registry setting back just so x or y program will run right.
The phone runs great now...just want a couple tweaks, not a full overhaul.

I probably went overboard....but if he would have read the posts he would have seen that we were discussing this in depth already. It would be like me walking into a white house press conference on the state of the economy and saying "hey...uhhh..maybe someone should try to fix it and stuff"
As for me ignoring the 2 suggestions.
1. I thanked the first guy but RESPECTFULLY mentioned that this was more of a work-around and not a fix. I also posted a fix to the first part of my problem in case he, or anyone else, was interested....not sure how that is supposed to show i ignored him.
2. The second suggestion was to a thread that the head guy didn't seem to updating anymore, which the poster stated up front as he gave me the link. I thanked him as well...and agreed that the thread did not have a solution for this issue...was never a **** to him.
Anyway.....I'm sorry, I shouldn't have reacted like that...I know he was only trying to help.
Back to the topic at hand. It appears the hold up on the 1% driver is that people are having an issue pulling the proper files from the tilt2's because of write protection or something......so looks like this is in limbo while people smarter than me attempt to help the rest of us.
Hi:
I installed the attached cab driver, and it seemed to work fine for me, with no side effects.
I found it with one of the Brian taskbars (gfreek edition), which by the way looked amazing, but the signal icon didn't get replaced with the new one.
Hope this helps

The fix you posted is for when the notification manager and the battery icon show values that are 1% away from each other. This thread is about a different issue, namely getting a 1% driver that works on the stock Tilt2 ROM. Thanks for the fix though; I think I have that problem also. I once saw my notification say 0% (when the battery driver was rejected) while the icon showed 1%.

[Q] Location of Menu Sub Text in framework xmls

Working on a gingerbread theme for DK28, not quite sure if i'll release it or not, but while dumping the pngs in and testing on my phone, I noticed the issue in the attached screenshot. The backgrounds for the icons when you hit menu from the homescreen are now black so the black text no longer shows up.
Anyone know where this text can be found in the framework xmls so I can edit it? Its the only issue I found and I poked around the xmls but couldnt find anything that jumped out at me, thanks for any help!
EDIT: correct png uploaded
bump - cmon guys, no help on this?
This is what I'll trying to figure out as well, its really pissing me off as its the only thing stopping me from releasing my rom. Im keeping an eye on this thread as well.

oh right, well its gotta be in framework-res.apk/res/drawable-hdpi for sure, i changed out almost every icon in there, flashed it and voila, black menu backgrounds. so i dont know exactly what pngs were responsible. doing a quick search for menu though i get the following i put my money on the starred one:
menu_background.9.png
***menu_background_fill_parent_width.9.png
menu_submenu_background.9.png
so what is a menu smali file? i'll search around but i've never done anything with one.
EDIT: sounds like smali might be a little out of my league, lol. but i think i may have found something, testing now before i reveal it. then just one more thing to fix and i think its ready to go!

[Q] Themes for Unity 1.26 on G2/DZ

Not sure if this goes here or in Q&A, sorry if I'm wrong
I just found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15014591&postcount=183
and i had previously flash a theme that was for the Desire HD and it worked grate.
Will this be the case with a Incredible S theme, or do a risk messing to bad (brick and the sort) my G2
I'm still trying the doubleshot ROM, but once I put Unity 1.26 Id like to try this them, is it a high risk?
By the way, I can't seem to find themes made by G2/DZ people, do we lack theme creator? XP
We do lack themers for the DZ/G2. But if you using unity all of the themes designed for other handsets should work. Do a nandroid incase though. I have tried most of the DHD themes on my DZ and not had any problems

It would be fairly easy to create a flashable zip to change the H icon to a 4G icon. If I get the chance I will have a look into it for you.
Or modifying it your self wouldn't be to hard. You just need to extract the 4G icons from a Rom that you know has them. I can't remember exactly if they are in framework-res.apk or SystemUI.apk. then using adb pull the appropriate files from the phone, rename the .png's and swap them using 7zip and push them back to your phone

can someone let me know if this systemui.apk removes the H and replaces it with 4G? or if you get errors? I run cm7 and I'm not about to install unity just to test.

FYI, 4G icons are already in unity's systemui.apk... it should just be a matter of renaming them so that they are picked up in place of "H". this is what I did in the above post's systemui.apk

Confirmed here that it works, although it also seems to mess up my notification pulldown background. See attached screenshots. First screenshot shows the 4G icon. Second screenshot shows how my notification background was changed. Third screenshot shows how it should look (after I reverted back to my SystemUI.apk). It looks like the UI is using some other graphic in your APK that is intended for another, much smaller element, and scaling it up to fit somehow.
pmcqueen said:
nothing else in the apk was modified aside from deleting the H pngs and duplicating the 4G pngs, then naming them as the H's, effectively replacing H with 4G, so I'm not sure why status bar images would have been modified.

Hrm, interesting. I diff'd all the graphics between the two SystemUI.apk files, and aside from the 4G changes, all the other differences were with the so-called "9-patch" PNGs (http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/draw9patch.html):
Code:
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_normal.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_normal.9.png dif
fer
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_normal_disable.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_normal_d
isable.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_normal_disable_focused.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_normal_disable_focused.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_pressed.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_pressed.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_selected.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/btn_default_small_selected.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/common_music_progress_fill.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/common_music_progress_fill.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/common_music_progress_secondary_track_thick.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/common_music_progress_secondary_track_thick.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/divider_horizontal_dark_opaque.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/divider_horizontal_dark_opaque.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/divider_horizontal_light_opaque.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/divider_horizontal_light_opaque.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/ic_notification_overlay.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/ic_notification_overlay.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/page_indicator.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/page_indicator.9.png differ
Files SystemUI/res/drawable-hdpi/shade_handlebar.9.png and SystemUI-4g/res/drawable-hdpi/shade_handlebar.9.png differ
(etc., etc., etc.)
I compared this against the SystemUI.apk from Virtuous Unity 1.26.0, and the PNGs match what I have, not what is in your APK. So I suspect your source of the other PNGs (not related to the 4G changes) has somehow been tainted. Your 9-patch PNGs all have an extra 1-pixel border around the outside, with visible black bars indicating the stretchable areas (see the URL above for an illustration). Those are not present in the VU ROM. Those black pixels then get stretched and smoothed out, which results in the screenshot I posted earlier.
Here's the VU 1.26.0 SystemUI.apk, if you want to peek inside at the "*.9.png" files to see the difference: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2639253/SystemUI.apk
yeah, let me try from scratch again. give me an hour or so, about to eat lunch.
Good luck pmcqueen i hope it works! i will check back later! (have a nice lunch?)

Oh, good idea... I'm gonna go have lunch too.
hey, I already posted this in the Unity development thread, tell me if this works for u guys too. I used the zip from xboarders 4g icons zip and changed the systemUI.apk to the one that I modified (and works for me) with the 4g icons for unity. I just changed the names of the H and 4g png files and so far no problems at all.

Right, that should work, and is the same approach pmcqueen took. As long as your 9-patch PNGs are fine, this mod should work. Keep in mind though, this replaces the entire SystemUI.apk, which includes a ton of other icons and graphic elements. Anyone who has a custom theme in there will lose what they have.
The best approach would be to patch just the PNG files inside the APK, but I'm not familiar enough with Android themeing to suggest how to do that (aside from manually doing it).
Wait DaygosTommyT's zip file works correctly? no graphical issues with the drop down? im not going to have any other themes on my phone so would this zip work for me? all i want to change is the h icon to 4g... thanks? haha

Is there a zip that I could flash to get my stock notifications in my status bar?

I flashed sacs note 5 port and im not really a fan of the lte sign for my signal. I like the stock one. Anyway there is a zip i could flash to get it back? Thanks!

I am on the same amazing ROM from ya boy Sac. What you are referring to is the new "heads up notifications" and I hate that crap also. Download the SQLite editor app (found here... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditor ), follow the attached screenshots and change the "heads_up_notifications_enabled" value from 1 to 0. You may need to reboot for the change to work.
Hey thanks for the reply. I followed your steps to the T and unfortunately it didn't work for me.

Not sure why, your obviously rooted and I am on the same ROM as you. There is also an app called Heads Off that should do the same thing, give this a try.

Hmm i just tried that heads off bit i didn't see what I was looking for. I know there's a way. I was looking through all of the posts in sacs thread and someoje posted a screen shot and I saw he had the sprint spark icon. Im using 'Flat style bar indicators' on xposed. But i can't seem to get 4g in front of the signal bars. So basically i just have bars...not knowing if I'm on 3g or lte. Sorry for being a headache. Just like all my stock stuff up there. The rom is amazing though. Can't wait for another update. Thank you again for your help
One more thing. I messed with my keyboard the other day and had to reflash stock s6 one. Now i dont have the symbols inside the letters. So i cant long press for a '?' Anymore i have to go to the symbols. Pretty annoying lol. I took a screen shot but i honestly have no idea how to add it to this post.

Best to ask in the Note 5 thread, cant help with that.
Cool thanks for all of your help. I appreciate it
The signal icons used on the status bar are determined by the build prop. "noble" devices use the icons which you don't like. (not to mention that they are not sized correctly in his N5 port). "trltespr" devices use the sprint spark icons that you are wanting, However changing from noble to trltespr can also effect other features in the rom. If you want the sprint icons then you will need to change the ro.device entries in the build.prop to reflect trltespr... use our N4 OG5 build.prop as reference and you will see what I'm talking about. Last thing. Making these changes in the build.prop requires a factory data reset so that the rom can setup again with the new configs. Simply editing them and rebooting will not do the trick.
Usually i dont mind doing something like this but i dont know what to change in the build.prop . If there was a guide I'd read it. But thank you. I'm glad you know what im trying to do lol
So i found this. .... https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...988642&usg=AFQjCNEq-YSRLtSLgHf6b8pLijNw0sFyGg ......but it doesnt tell me which line to edit. Then i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...ps/mod-edit-build-prop-international-t2951057 ...but i cant see the pics that shows you which lines or line to edit....sorry im trying here lol
I got it...thank you very much. Now id like to adjust the size of it but i didn't see that anywhere
