Dialer location and files - problems with display - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Have been modifying TP2 with many registry changes etc. Running WM6.1
However, seem to have "lost" part of the standard dialer and have trolled through the forums trying to find what files and .dll are being used by the DEFAULT dialler.
The HTC dialler works fine but I do not like it, so when swapping back to the default dialer, the buttons and keys are there, but where the list of previous numbers should be is just a grey area with no entries. Selecting any area WILL bring up the call record as normal.
I must have deleted\edited\corrupted something..........but even looking through back-ups, can not find a clue!
Otherwise, any clues on JUST a plug in dialer (everything I find seems to be a full package with today and other stuff) - I like the dialler on the TYTN2 - both for size and colour and am trying to replicate this if possible.
Colours and size are good for tapping when driving as here in UK must NOT hold a phone as illegal!
ANy clues on files/which registry keys hold the colours for the HTC keypad etc. would be useful as doesn't seem to be HKLM\security\phone\skin
dll(s) for depressed key appearance in dialer

I used a couple of different phone dialer skins but was not happy with any of them. One problem is that the original key appearance shows through the new skin when you press and hold. I uninstalled all the skins but now the number keys (not the function keys though...) do not change appearance when the key is held. The original dialer does do this. I would like to get the dialer completely back to original. I read that these depressed key images are in one or more dlls. Could someone post these and explain where to install them?
The solution
Thanks much to user hshortt for most of this solution.
Get ahold of the file tapres.dll, place it in your Windows folder (mine was not missing nor did any dailer skinning modify this dll (there was another dll called tapres.96.dll in the Windows folder, no idea what this one is or if it was placed there by a dialer skin...). Either way just make sure you have the version of this file from your original ROM.
Make sure you have a registy string value under
Hkey_Current_User | Control Panel | Phone
called "IcoFil"
make sure the value is "tapres.dll"
Somehow one of the dialer skins I used removed this string!
Do a soft reset and your dialer will get back the altered appearance of the number keys when pressed.
Again BIG cheers to hshortt!

Phone Dialer Backgrounds & Carrier logo

Hey Guys,
Dunno about you, but I've installed the T-mobile NL latest ROM - but - and a big BUT -
Who designed that dialer skin!?
Attached are 2 nice backgrounds I made (landscape and portrait), and a Carrierlogo for Orange Israel which looks really great.
Replace all 3 files in the windows directory.
Note: If you get problems with write access, try with "Total Commander" it seemed to work perfectly!
Btw, for nice buttons, elsewhere on these forums is ablackqsilver skin for the universal.. didn't have energy to design the buttons...
From what I understand, the nice dialler skins won't work on our Universals, so I guess we'll make our own
If anyone else has some nice ones - Share!

Very nice.
hey do you have anything for atom like this carrier logo and splash screens.
Thanks
I'll be buggered if I can overwrite or delete the carrier gif file, I want to overwrite the 2 DLL's that contain the pink video buttn as well.....
Ayone go any ideas? tried in flight mode and with resco and total commander.
Cheers
To change the button graphics
To change the buttons I first installedthe black/silver universal phone skin. It redirects the registry phone buttons to its graphics, and they are replaceable.
Works great for me and got rid of the pink buttons...
Well people who designed the T-Mobile dialer skin are Either colorblind or complete Arses....
I understand that you guys were able to get rid of it? to get back the original HTC Blue and green buttons ??
Can you please tell us all how to do it ??
The only way I can see to get rid of it 'completely' without loosing the Video button is to replace the 2 DLL's that contain the video button resources.
Unfortunately they are in ROM so it would have to be a cook of a new ROM.
I was thinking about giving it a go, but to be honest, just cannot be rsed, I'll leave it be until either HTC make the dialer completely skinnable to the end user or a new HTC (iMate/QTek) rom that is newer than the T-Mobile one is released.
I also don't like the other mods that TM do (to the start menu etc), but I've got rid of those, and everything else about the latest NL Tmobile WWE ROM rules, def the best one I've used yet.
So I'll live with the garish pink dialer for now...... unfortunately
Thanx for the info.
I am myself on the DOPOD ROM and am very happy (I do not have a stereo headset so the A2DP is not important
Hello all. I never saw these posts before so I never knew how to change the dialer skins until I found the registry tweaks in the wiki area. I've attached a zip file of all the buttons on T-Mobile. I haven't really changed them. Just made the buttons rounder! ... Not much difference but it does look better. The only problem was that I couldn't change the Video button for some reason. I changed the background and the buttons by copying the files to the mda, either the extended ROM, the sd card (which could coz a problem if you remove it) or the mda's internal memory and then in the registry just change the location of the files. All the buttons are named the same as the original. This way you won't really have any problems and you can revert to the originals by just renaming the registry settings back to the "\Windows\" directory. The registry keys are in: "HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin" ... the "Dialer" directory holds all the buttons and background for when the dialer buttons are on the screen. The "Progress" directory holds the buttons and background for when you're in a call and the dial buttons are not visible. The keys that you have to edit are the bmp... entries. The default string is "\Windows\...bmp" just change them to wherever they are, like "\Storage Card\DialerSkin\...bmp", etc.
The only think I couldn't change was the Video buttons and the Operator logo. If the background you put up is not white or a lighter colour the logo looks retarded. I tried looking for the file "erlogo" but i didn't find it. However I did find a file called "Carrierlogo" in the Windows directory. I'm thinking of backing it up and then blanking it out. Don't really care about the logo. Anyways, I've added a zip file of the buttons I edited. I've also put up screenshots. You can change the buttons to whatever you want if you can design one. I tried looking for one but seems like no one is really making them for the MDA Pro's as the MDA Vario's and the like are more common. Anyways, hope I can get some help with the Video buttons and maybe some nice backgrounds for the dialer?!

Well if you want to get the default blue Windows Mobile dialer then just go to the Registry to: "HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin" and the entry for Enabled change it to "0" to disable the operator dialer or then "1" to enable it. If you disable it and reboot the MDA you'll see the original blue dialskin but you miss out on the video button. so no video calls can be made also the Smart Dial feature will not work if the blue dialer is used. I don't know why so don't ask! ... Hope this helps?!
havoc99!
Thanx I am aware of that HACK, but then you as you quite correctly mention loose the video call and the smart dialer.
But !!!!!!!!!!!!
What you are writing about making the busttons might be great just design my own set and done. Question is if I keep it on the SD card it mst probably be even slower then now (I mean the device)
Well If i cook my own set of buttons I shall let you all know
Hey Havoc....
I am happy with the default skin on the QTEK 9000 for example so all i have to do is copy all the files you have in that zip archive. from my Windows directory... and then I have a ready skin so I can actually go and use the t-mobile ROM...
I mean now since we know the file names, I hope your archive is complete havoc

About the buttons I meant you could take the originals and colour them different, instead of have the buttons curved like I posted previously you could have them a different shape, etc. I currently have my modified buttons and pics on the ExtendedROM which pretty much is a part of the inbuilt memory and so far it's working fine. I haven't noticed any slowness or sluggish behaviour. I'll try make some different buttons and post them up. ... Should be fun but time consuming. ... If you've seen the skins for the MDA Vario using the ETen Dialer, those are really sexy but that means one has to sit and make them for the MDA Pro. I'll try it out and post what I can get.

Well the buttons I modified were for the T-Mobile skin so I don't know what happens with the QTek as I've never seen the skin so try at your own expense. Mine is working great. Just changed the links to the locations. I noticed when I flashed the i-mate rom, the dialer was completely different. If you're going to flash your PDA with the T-Mobile ROM then you should try it out. Though I have never replaced the original files coz then if anything goes wrong I have to reflash so be careful. My archive is only missing the background pics which are named as "Bkgnd_land" and "Bkgnd_port" in the same Windows directory. I've posted the backgrounds as well but you can put anything you want as long as it's the right resolution. The one I use is always 640x480. However, I strongly advise you to copy these files in another folder on the PDA and not replace the originals. I placed mine in a folder in the ExtendedROM. I originally figured out this hack from the wiki page:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Registry
Check it out. There's allot of nice hacks there.
Hi guys, I was messing around with the dialer buttons and if you take the bmp's that are in the zip file (or if you copy the ones that are in the Windows directories) and open them in paint (or the like) and colour the buttons "NmBtnUp_..." fully black and then in the registry only edit the "bmpNormal" under "dialbutton" to the black ones then after the reboot, your dialer buttons are invisible. Only thing you see are the numbers and alphabets. Pretty kool! ... I only did it for the "dialbutton" folders not the rest as in the erase, talk/end, or the verbbutton. Quite an interesting effect for the dialer depending on your background or your choice. Just thought I'd share. I also changed the really nice green backgrounds by "summoner" into dark grey (I hope you don't mind) and I've posted screenshots of them up. K! Thought I'd share my interesting discovery.

I managed to overwrite the carrierlogo.gif file from the explorer built in with "Pocket Controller - Professional" that I bought. It's a nice program. Little sluggish sometimes but i can use the MDA from the pc without touching it. By the way, what are you going to overwrite the 2 dll's with? Have you found a way to modify the video button?
HAvoc!
Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=52399&highlight=
There are some default phone dialer skins from the providers.
Havoc!
the link I have given you you can download the skins in cab format...
Well if you exctract the cab and change the extentions to .bmp you get the buttons.... The nicest one I think is the O2 one

Phone Dialer Skin Missing Key Labels

I installed the skin -- SmartDial+EtenO2ENG_2.0 -- but I don't have any text on the Speed Dial, Call History, or Talk buttons in portrait. I had them originally but installed another theme then went back to this one. I do have them in landscape but can't figure out which registry keys (or dll files) paint these.
Can anybody advise me on how to get these labels back?
Thanks!

WM6 Dialer Names+Numbers

Hi All,
Is there any way that i can get the names and the numbers to display as i hit the keys in the dialer?[Currently only the names are shown]
The earlier Jasjam rom there was an option to have the names and numbers to show up as you type.
Many thanks for you help with this,
G
My current version: 2007-05-07 RUU_Hermes_WWE_3.30.0.9 [LVSW Edition]
normaly is should show you the neames and below one number for the contact you want... when you scroll to your contact... with left / right pad you can scroll through the numbers for that contact...
Nope, Its only showing me the names but no numbers
Is there any option that i need to change to get this working?
Sounds like you need to reinstall the HTC smart dialer. Check the wiki under the cabs section (and elsewhere). Maybe that will fix what ails you.
WM6 Dialer Names+Numbers - Settings for Black.
This one has buggged me for a while also, however it's easy to fix.
Simply use "Pimp my Black" and enable the 3G Video Dialer. Click bling, soft rest and you now have the older smart dialer which shows names and #'s. It also allows you to use the scroll wheel to quickly access history and speed-dial.
I'm also running LVSW's ROM - ever since I installed the HTC Smart dialer 2.2 on the wiki cab page I can't find the option to enable the names/numbers on the main screen at all. It's just a blank space with the numpad.

Alphanuma 0.9 an Alpha-Numeric Display [Deprecated, 1.0 released]

Do you miss knowing which letters are on which numbers, like when dialing a number from a business? Like, "Call Now! 1-800-YES-YEAH" Here's the fix for Kavana/Ricky/HTC based ROMs.
This is a mod of Surreal Networks Alpha-Numeric Display patch (grey), without the T-Mobile Branding:
Now, with correct spelling. (Hey it was late!)
download BRANDING.GIF
place in the Windows folder
browse to it with resco explorer
rename to ms_mobile.gif, confirm
May require rebooting. You are welcome to modify this, make into a .cab or desktop installer.
UPDATE April 4: Newest version, no branding, simpler install, and works on both the in-call and dialer screens here! Or jump to page three for preview.
UPDATE April 18: One Point Zero release here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2129954#post2129954
Thanks, that's great. Although, you spelled Excalibur wrong...
Thanks a ton! This is a great help!
Nice but I was wondering how the hell to get the panel AFTER you make a call to show the numbers on Kavana's 6.1. Like automated service tells you to put in your name or whatnot on the dialpad....
dialpad cab minus excalibur branding
attached is the same dialpad without the Excalibur branding.
install cab, reboot, enjoy.
thanks to Ben Hirashima for the cab

Not sure. I will look into it. I suppose it could be added to the top of whatever image is in the "next" screen?
So it's only in one colour, and it might not match your blues, but I'll share the one I made for my phone if any of you like it.
I made one too
Windows standard colors
Here are original ones for each of the default colors and Segoe text. No Branding. Included one in grey, too!
Anyone else having a problem with the automatic alpha-num installers with a cooked ROM?
I like the one with T-mobile Branding. It makes the rom feel more official. (Extracted from the Surreal Networks CAB)

I am working on a complete suite of not T-Mobile Branding, trying to figure out the splash screens at the moment. I just cant dig the pink T; Ive tried! Been cruising the other forums for clues...
It seems that the Ben dialpad works on the in-call screen, but I cant simulate the behavior if i uninstall his cab and manually it the reg. What keys do others use to change background on the in-call screen? IT really needs some livening up anyway.

Just one key...but it has to point to a file that exists. So if you've extracted the .gif file from the .cab / make sure you drop the .gif file in the windows directory and note what the .gif filename is as thats what you're going to put in the regitry entry...also make sure you soft-reset otherwise it won't change until then.
And as far as the in call screen is concerned ... look for a file in \windows directory named cprogback_land.png for your in-call screen
Here's the one that i use: It looks good with technology's another blue color scheme .......Just rename the extention from .jpeg to .png if you want to use it
nice tip! thanks!

It appears that that file is hard-coded, so there is no way to mod the reg with the installer, but it looks like windows mobile's .cab-install system will back things up alright from a file replacement approach. So, a single installer for both is do-able.
Interestingly, the image I am overwriting is called Carrierlogo.gif, not cprogback_land.png. Are there two potential images retrieved for the call screen, one in the fore and one in the back? I wonder what I could do with that info...
Or, maybe it is named differently in different source roms with the same purpose. Will text that next.
boom, got it
So, I think i this is how the in-call graphics work:
It appears that the call screen does indeed call up two images (not including a contact thumb, if applicable) The background is hardwired as "cprogback_land.png". Also, instead of having the carrier text string at the top, it can have an image across the top, which is hardwired as "carrierlogo.gif". Nothing can be done, as far as I can tell, to change the pointers to other files, so overwrites are the only method of changing.
If the graphic is put inside the background image itself, it can be the full width of the screen, like any background, and likewise any height (up to 213) But the in-call screen is a bit busy. The top 24 pixels (after the window top) are reserved for the carrier branding text string (or image), followed by 2 blank rows of pixels and a horizontal rule at row 27. The next 88 pixels (the middle area is a call status area followed by another rule at row 116, and pressed digits fill the bottom area.
However, if the graphic (.gif only) is in the foreground, it can be any size and proportion, but if it is taller than 24 pixels, or wider than 311 pixels, it will be (UPDATED) scooted over four pixels and cropped to fit a box of those dimensions at the top. If it is smaller, it will be top-, then left-aligned. Either way, if it is there, it replaces the carrier text string, rather than having to be designed around it. One thing to keep in mind, if using this method is that it has to be 10 pixels narrower than the image that might be used on the dialer screen, or it will "shrink" when you switch screens, if you want them to "match".
If anything is unclear, or anyone has any details to add, or corrections to make, please let me know! Thanks

One could be made by renaming any wallpaper that would work on the home screen.
I am working on a png one that blends seamlessly with a floating .gif dialpad right now. Must test it out tho'
Here is a trio of images to bring a consistent and mellow dialpad feature to BOTH the dial and incall screens.
