OTA update question? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok so i have an evo that's rooted with unrevoked 3, i didn't change anything i just rooted it for the tethering app. earlier today i received a message saying a software update was available so i downloaded it and i tried to install and it had an android logo with an exclamation mark inside a triangle. so i did a battery pull and turned it back on but its still asking me to update. did it not work because im rooted or whats going on? thanks

I have a rooted 3.26 also and I couldn't update, but my reason was different. I removed Calculator.odex and it errors out in:
"apply_patch_check("/system/app/Calculator.odex","(bunch of numbers&letters)","(more numbers&letters)")
I really don't want to install a full update, it will remove all my apps...etc etc Oh well, time for Titanium Backup and re-do my EVO! :/

so what do i do lol. i dont know what any of that means

I don't know what any of that means either. Perhaps people in the q/a subforum will know.

If you're rooted, just put the latest rooted RUU or a rom that is based off of the the latest OTA on your SD card and do a full wipe and flash it using your recovery.
The latest Fresh rom is based off of the new OTA and can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789493
The stock rom based off of the latest OTA with root can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819838
Edit: Remember: Create a back up of your current rom FIRST! Also, Amor RA recovery is better for this type of flashing because clockwork recovery is known not to properly wipe the dalvik cache. Using ROM manager, go to scroll to the bottom to where it says "flash alternate recovery" and flash RA Recovery before you start. Once you are done and the phone boots, flash back to clockwork recovery to be able to access your nandroid back up in case anything goes wrong.

I installed 3.29.651.5 full update over rooted 3.26.651.6 and then unrevoked, everything worked fine. Just finished unrevoking it.

So if your rooted you can't install updates without flashing a new rom? Because I'm completly new to this and I don't have a clue on what to do

Mine didn't install the OTA (about 22mb download) on the stock Sprint ROM rooted with unrevoked3... I had to download the full update, backup my programs, install the full update, then root, then install custom splash, animation and software, then I removed bloatware. My error was from missing Calculator.odex not sure if that's the reason why...

Can I just unroot, install update then root again? That would be easier imo. Also will unrooring wipe my data?

Not sure how you unroot... It wasn't that bad, I had 40 apps that I backed up and had to hit "INSTALL" then "DONE" no biggie...

Broken ClockworkMod Recovery on latest Evo Rom

I have the latest recovery mod installed (ClockworkMod 2.0.1.3) on the latest ROM and Radio released June 28th for the Evo and I get the error icon every time i try to load into recovery. I have already tried to re-flash from ROM manager but no luck. Any ideas or on whats going on?
The same thing has happened to me twice. It happened when the program told me there was a new version available, and had to flash the new one. Afterwards, I could not boot into recovery (i'd just stay stuck in the beginning screen).
The way I fixed it is inside of ROM Manager, I clicked "Fix Permissions", and after that was done, I clicked "Flash Amon RA". This at least allows me to use the Amon RA custom recovery.
I had issues with the latest clockwork 2.0.1.3 too. At the bottom of rom manager there is the option to flash previous recoveries, i just went back to 2.0.1.2 and it works fine.
I have tried multiple old versions of clockworkmod and the alt recovery and still no luck. All attempts to load into any type of recovery have failed. HELP!!!

not sure exactly what you mean by the bolded statement. like you installed the updates in a custom rom or you did the OTA to get the latest rom and radio?

I used the "[ROM] OTA 1.47.651.1 Rooted" method to update my phone then I ran Calkulin's radio update. After this I was able to go into recovery and perform the factory reset / wipe device. I then preceded to restore my phone's data using My Backup Pro. after seeing that everything was working fine i went to try and perform a nandroid backup and found my recovery to be broken. Have been unable to flash a working rom since. I have been using ROM manager to flash different recoveries. and I always have the same result of a picture of a phone with an exclamation mark inside a triangle.

[Q] Going from stock Incredible to unrevoked forever to prepare for official Froyo

I'm not in a rush to hack my Droid Incredible right now, but want to keep the possibility open for after the official 2.2 comes out, so it seems the recommendation is to install Unrevoked Forever since we don't know if the Dinc will still be rootable after the update (I actually believe it will be eventually, but no guarantees). I am NOT planning to install a custom ROM right now, my entire goal is to have S-OFF and then go back to stock enough to catch the official OTA when it comes.
I've been reading the instructions (and the warnings) and just wanted to make sure I've got the idea before I do anything. Can anyone point out any flaws in the steps below:
1. I downloaded the HTC_Incredible_Downgrade.zip from xda forums which I believe has the stock recovery PB31IMG.zip (146,445,757 bytes).
2. Install unrevoked3 to root the phone.
3. Download unrevoked-forever.zip. Install it with the custom recovery that unrevoked3 installed.
4. reboot and see the S-OFF setting
5. Then use the custom recovery to install the stock PB31IMG.zip from step 1.
So before I do this I want to make sure:
* Will I then be back to stock in every way except that S-OFF is set?
* Will any of this procedure wipe my phone clean so I lose installed apps and data?
* Am I then ready to catch the stock OTA install of Froyo when it comes out?
I suspect a bunch of people are thinking of doing this right now.
Thanks in advance
Steve
Welp
Remember that step 2 is far more involved; you need the special HBOOT drivers, and no HTC Sync.
I believe the 3 stars are:
* Yes
* No (since Step 5 is just flashing the original recovery)
* Yes
Which step do you expect to wipe my phone? I wouldn't have expected the rooting part to wipe it since I'm not talking about installing a custom ROM. I was more worried about the recovery to stock to wipe it.
Whoops
Whoops ... misread your step 5. No, you should be fine.
you dont really need to flash the entire stock rom just the recovery it can be found at http://adrynalyne.us/ here is a direct link http://adrynalyne.us/files/recovery/stock/PB31IMG.zip
Edit: in your step 5 you will need to use hboot to install a stock recovery
ps the stock recovery only is like 3.3mb the one you have is 140mb and will wipe your phone.
Uhm, you can't flash one part of the PB31IMG.zip, so if it's 146MB, it's most likely a system image with wiping data and cache, so yes, it will wipe your phone. You can find a stock recovery only PB31IMG.zip somewhere on the forums here. Search around.
I'm currently rooted with unrevoked3 and unrevoked forever. I have yet to mess with my radio or flash any roms. So to be eligible to get the over the air update I need to just flash that stock recovery zip?

oops. lol. delete.
OK, unrevoked3 and forever both installed now (everything went VERY smoothly), haven't done the recovery to stock yet.
So I notice that I've got the Superuser Permissions app installed now. Do I need to unroot before I can do an OTA update to Froyo, or can I keep root and still do the OTA? If for some reason I wanted to give up root at some point what would be the minimum I need to do?
Do I lose root when I reinstall the stock recovery to allow the OTA?
Steve
Are there any docs or usage info about the Superuser Permissions app that unrevoked3 installs? I'm not sure what to do with it.
Steve
What I don't get is the part about regaining superuser access with an update.zip after receiving the OTA. Where can I find said file? I've searched and googled and can't find it.

Yep, that's stock recovery. You need to load clockwork recovery, I think that's how you fix it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

At the stock recovery you press vol up and power and you get a menu you where its possible to reboot, install undate.zip...ect...
From what I hear you only need the stock recovery and the stock build to get and install the official ota.
If your rooted that should be fine the ota will likely remove root but who cares with s-off!

Ok so lets see if I did this correctly. Im rooted with unrevoked forever. So I just Downloaded the pb31mg file and did a reboot into recovery via rom manager. I then applied an (update.zip) from the sd card which was the pb31mg.zip. I then reboooted. Is there anything I can check to make sure Im stock enough to recieve the ota?

Problem with root

Alright so a while back I used unrevoked on my wifes incredible and it worked just fine. she updated it recently so today I went to reroot and prep to install a new rom. Problem is it failed to get root with the newest unrevoked. Ti backup fails to get root yet mybackup gets it and so does rom manager. I'm trying to get into clockwork through the hboot menu. Maybe I'm doing something wrong by going through there..i tried to backup with cwm through rom manager and it worked (didn't till i flashed the latest recovery but still) but I'd still like to get into cwm for myself not rely on rom manager. I've yet to try to reboot into recovery that way or restore the backup I made as I am at work but regardless..any ideas? I know when things are being ridiculous with the fascinate I can just odin and go from there..is there something along those lines for the dinc? If not what should I do to root the thing..get clockwork again..and flash the new rom? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys.
Thanks!

I can get to HBOOT but from there all i can do is reboot or fast boot, I havent done the factory reset yet but i intend to try. But from hboot I want to get into cwm, or do i get into cwm recovery a different way?
Mind you I havent tried to get into it since flashing the newest cwm through rom manager (or that I remember trying or not..been a hectic past week..im losing my damn mind, grandmother passed away in Anaheim, etc, etc)
also im going to reroot and do a completely different rom, it is stock minus wonky root and launcher pro. I finally convinced the wife to let me modify it.
Ifu don't see recovery option in any hboot option. Like there's no clockwork u should by able to flash clockwork and then a Rom.ican pm you.but if unroot is your objective goto Android dev stickies there's a thread.
sent from dinc
thats the thing, I see the recovery option, but everytime I select it, it tried to find a multitude of images, says file doesnt exist on all of them (4 or 5 of them I believe) and sends me back to the main hboot screen.
Suppose that information would have been useful. Again, hectic week lol
use say u have rom manager?
yes, im wondering if I need a stock recovery image since it isnt finding the PBwhaterver.img Any idea where I can get that?
Also probably helpful, I had used unrevoked forever a while back. Im thinking I need to undo those changes and just retry everything.
Thoughts?
Edit: Downloaded a new clockwork recovery image from unrevoked forever wiki, gonna throw it on the SD card and see what happens. HOPEFULLY that will let me into cwr, if not, how do I just put everything back to stock so I can start over?
try that file. get rid of the mlti part should sayPB31IMG. also make sure no other files of the same name are on root of sd.should say update vol up yes wait reboot no see ifu got recovery got newr versions too. also new urevoked have versions without clockwork u prolly used tht one. easy fix tho
alright, gonna give it a shot when I get home in the morning. Wish me luck.
Alright flashing with rom manager and selecting reboot into recovery from there worked just fine. we are in business for now anyways lol.

[Q] stuck at white htc evo 4g screen - not flashed anything yet

hello all, noob here. searched the forums already, not quite the same problem here.
I just rooted my phone with unrevoked 3.32, had zero problems. I confirmed that i had nand unlocked in hboot (says S-OFF). I started up my phone without problems after rooting, checked and I had superuser permissions in the app drawer. i then proceeded to download busybox, rom manager, my backup for root, and titanium backup from the market, but I did NOT open any of them. I thought I would do a nandroid backup first.
I rebooted into hboot, went to recovery. this started up clockworkmod (that came with unrevoked 3.32), went to backup and restore, and hit nandroid backup. It completed, said done, then i selected "go back" and selected the first option, reboot system now.
I then tried to turn my phone on, just regular power on not into hboot, and i get stuck at the white htc evo 4g screen, it then reboots, and continues to cycle up to that point.
I have NOT flashed anything other than rooting my phone. i haven't wiped anything, done anything else than what i have there.
Hboot version is 2.10
radio version says 2.15.00.11.19
clockworkmod version is 2.6.0.1
EVO is from June 2010, not a new evo.
I can get into hboot and recovery, no problems, but i can't startup the phone.
Please help! i just want to start up the phone, don't want to flash anything yet. Thanks in advance.
Maybe its the busybox that you downloaded. You should hit up recovery and do a full wipe! The start up again. What rom are you running, most roms have busybox included so when you download it I've seen phones get the white screen of death. Grab a rom and reflash it. Since you put busybox that nandroid you made probably is no good. Reason I'm telling you all this is because has happened to me before. Good luck

Well, I'm not sure what exactly went wrong for ya, but I might suspect it was something to do with some of the apps you downloaded prior to making your backup. The first thing to try, would be to boot to recovery, and wipe cache, and then go to 'advanced' and wipe dalvik cache. Then try to reboot. If that fails, then you're next option (without flashing a new ROM) is to do a data/factory reset. You will however lose all of your apps, settings, contacts, texts, etc. You unfortunately don't really have any other options, unless wiping cache's helps you out. If a factory reset doesn't allow you to boot, then you're most likely going to have to flash a new ROM. And also, I thought that Unrevoked flashed the latest clockwork recovery, which would be 3.0 or somehting like that, no?
Hi k2buckley,
So I tried wiping the cache and the dalvik cache then rebooted, no luck. Does this mean the nandroid backup I made is also corrupt? Restoring that won't do anything will it? So the options are to do a factory reset or flash a new rom? If I lost everything anyway, I might as well try to flash a new rom.
However, to clarify, I didn't "install" busybox. I downloaded the app but I didn't open it up and click install. So even if I flash a new rom, then I install busybox and do a nandroid backup it will work? If so, why didn't it work this time? If I do a factory reset, then do the same thing and install busybox, will the same thing happen? Is busybox incompatible with the sense froyo that comes from the sprint OTA?

You don't need to download busy box, I would delete that app. If you flash a rooted rom it should already have busybox; if you just rooted your phone and want to download busybox on your current stock rom then it will be ok. I would wipe and flash a new rom just to be safe.

Well, I'm not exactly sure why you want to download busy box so badly. Any rom comes with busy box cooked in. I have only once installed busy box. The only time i remember having to do it, was Immediately after I rooted with Unrevoked, i went to use Titanium, and had some error. I hit the problems button and that updated busy box from there. Other than that, I've never messed with it.
And yes, most likely your nandroid backup is not going to be of any value to you. You could try restoring it if you'd like, but I predict it would be a waste of time. And I'm not sure that it matters that you didn't 'open' and click install on busy box. If you downloaded it from the market, wouldn't it just download and install itself automatically? I would just flash a rom, and be done with it. Roll with whatever version of busy box comes with the ROM you flash. As you said, you're only option is a factory reset now, and if you're going to do that, you certainly may as well flash a custom rom at the same time. You just need to download a rom, and put it on your sd card. You can mount the sd card as a disk drive to your computer from within recovery. I use amon ra, and its called USB MS TOGGLE. I'm not sure what it's called in clockwork, but the option is there. So put the rom on your sd card, perform a complete wipe, (i'd flash calkulin's format all.zip as well), flash a rom, reboot, and forget about anything with busy box. It will be installed on the rom already.
If you download busybox from the market and it already has it built in the rom you might bork the rom and get a bootloop. Try it and see for yourself !

Well, the only reason I download busybox was because I wanted to use titanium backup and it is required. Other than that, I could care less about it. It does not install automatically after downloading. You have to go into the app and choose which version you want to install and I didn't install it. The thing is I didn't want to install any roms in the first place. I wanted to just root the phone for the purpose of wifi tethering. So basically my better option is doing a factory reset.
I won't be able to do this til I get home in a few hours, so if anyone else has any suggestions on how to fix this without losing my data, I would appreciate any tips. Thanks.
If you can get a logcat that should show what is causing it to bootloop. It's 'adb logcat > logcat.txt' to do it, run that and wait for it to loop 3 or 4 times before pushing Ctrl+C to stop it.
Busybox isn't included in the ROM because I didn't flash a ROM! I'm using the sense 2.2 froyo Ron that comes from sprint and HTC. I didn't flash anything as I stated in the title. I just did a nandroid backup and now my phone won't boot.

Right. But unfortunately now, your data seems to be lost. Did a factory reset help anything? If not, you got to wipe and reflash a rom.

You can use the root tools zip from the link in my sig to get to adb, there is a script in there called OpenShell that will bring up a dos prompt in the right folder. Rooting should have enabled adb during boot so you should be ok on that end.

OK, so I downloaded and extracted the auto-root tools only zip from your sig, and then ran OpenShell.bat and typed as you said "adb logcat > logcat.txt" with my phone plugged in. said "waiting for device" and then i turned on my phone and let it boot 4-5 times before ctrl+c and pulling the usb. all the logcat.txt says is...
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
am i doing something wrong?

man, for the life of me, i can't believe i didn't do a nandroid before i downloaded the app. for some reason i thought only downloading an app from the market, not flashing anything or whatever, would not screw up my phone.
anyway, since my data is lost, i wanted to try again. can i flash the unrevoked S-ON utility and then the latest Sprint RUU and then re-root? i read somewhere else that it won't remove my wimax/RSA keys or SD card, is that correct? is there a way to backup my RSA keys before I do anything else? should i do that, re-root, then nandroid, then mess with stuff? i basically wanted a stock Sprint EVO but one that's rooted so i can run root-based apps, that's what I want to get to.
Flash the Amon Ra recovery via the AR pc36img.zip file in hboot method, then reboot to recovery, do a full wipe/factory reset and try to boot to system.

[Q] tmobile OTA and rooted phone

i have a T989, rooted, Clockwork Mod, and installed some stock Android (sans bloatware) MOD.
i had updates set to automatic and am now being bugged to install the new TMobile update, which doesn't seem to be able to install with Clockwork, and i can't turn off the persistent Update prompts.
i've already bricked one GS2, and obviously fear doing it again. I wouldn't get another chance, i don't think. (i do have insurance on the phone, not sure if it would cover a rooted phone?)
what can someone tell me about the TMobile update and Clockwork, or whatever i need to do, go with the update or stop it somehow...?
thanks for your help.
Ota update requires stock recovery.
Grab one of the updated stock roms and flash via cwm. Then Odin the new baseband.

i think i have one of those stock roms - i chose one that was just 'the same thing but without some of the standard apps'. how can i check to see what rom i have...?
and what do you mean by baseband? the new update? is it already dl'd to my phone? i've searched through the phone's dirs (rooted File Explorere, i guess) and could not find anything...
sorry to be a pain - i can't brick another one, of course... (
is this what you mean by a 'stock updated rom':

No, look for the KL1 release.
Baseband is your radio btw. Don't worry about the radio for now, just work on getting the rom flash.

ok, found Deodexed_KL1_T989 (T989UVKL1 by Whitehawkx) is that what i'm looking for? -
couple of questions:
he says on the post:
"DONT FLASH - add files to the zip in the app folder, then flash. Or usb connect drag to sd the use some rooted file explorer to place in system/app then reboot."
Flash or don't Flash? I'm transferring the zip to sd now, then i need to move it to system/app...?
once i've 'flashed' what do you mean "Odin the baseband"? i have Odin, used it last time...
thanks

I flashed the ROM, now i have 2.3.6, and now i'm stuck with 2 OTA notifications, one states postponed, and choosing START for the update does nothing.
help?
I had the base load on mine with a bunch of stuff frozen and Clockwork on it (plus root)
I first unfroze all the stuff I had frozen, then ODIN'd back the stock recovery. Didn't touch anything else, then told the OTA to go ahead.
It updated just fine -- removed root of course. I then ODIN'd back the clockwork recovery and re-installed SU, then re-froze all the boatware.
Done in about 15 minutes -- no muss, no fuss, didn't lose anything.

ok, thanks - this is what i didn't understand - i can Odin back to Stock recovery?
for some reason Odin doesn't recognize my phone in download mode, but it does when i'm connected and the phone is on... any reason for this? i don't use odin in any means but download mode, right?

You can probably clear this up by formatting /system in CWM. Then wiping cache and dalvik. Then flash the FL1 update. Hit advance, fix permissions and then reboot.

did all this, nothing's changed. i'm unable to get Odin to see my phone in DL mode. when i boot into DL mode, the device manager shows an alert on my phone. in normal, the drivers work fine and Odin sees the phone.
damn.
