Left untill i get my Desire
So what should be the first thing i do with my Htc Desire ?
Root?
rom testing? (your recomendation?)
or____?

Protect case. Froyo for a couple of days... If bored...root...custom rom. Find out if u like sense or not.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

Protective case and a screen protector is a must have dont know if i should use zagg invisible shield or some other screen protector.

Brick it by rooting. Joking. See if you like it at stock if not root it and flash custom roms. Rooting it will add to your fun with the Desire!
Oh yes, definately a screen protector!

Rule Number 1:
Go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the software version on your phone, e.g. 2.10.405.2
Then go here and if the file that matches your version is available download it so you can always go back to stock if you need to
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
Then, as said, just use the phone and see if you like it stock. If not, then you can root safe in the knowledge you can revert back should you need to

I just bought a used phone (desire). The software version is 1.15.405.4 and the Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2. I check in http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo there is RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_122704.exe. Can I use it as stock even the radio is different from my desire?

The used Desire has been rooted as the radio is from the later 1.21.405.2 ROM...
You're better off getting the 2.10.405.2 RUU as that's the latest one, no point going back to the first one!!

I tried to get the software update and yes, there is a software update 1.21.405.2 but after successful download, I think it is fail update the device. I got a device picture with ? mark and when I checked the software information, it is still 1.15.405.4. Can I install the RUU 1.21.405.2 from Shipped-roms and how to install it?

Yes you can, download it, make sure you're connected in HTC Sync and just run it...BUT you might as well get 2.10.405.2 as that's the latest one
You might need a gold card so I'd make one just in case

Why do I need a gold card as I just want to update the device into the official RUU? Is the gold card just needed to root the device? Sorry about my questions, I am a newbie.

I've made a gold card and tried to flash the official RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe but always fail with a message ERROR [131]: CUSTOMER ID ERROR. What is that mean? How to check the gold card whether it is good/correct or not?

[Q] Basics of rooting my desire????

Hi guys.. I am new to the community. I have got a HTC desire and I wanna root it but I dont understand the whole root and modding stuff. So can someone pls explain it to me? Like whats the difference between rooting/ modding/ gold card? So to do some thing wat should I do first??
Step1--Goldcard?
Step2--Root??
Step3--Mod??
I read through the tutorial but there was too much info I dint understand. So can someone temme wat you did first or the steps you followed while rooting or modding your Desire? And which mod is good?? Thanks for helping
Edit- I have the Froyo OTA update
First off, why do you wanna root it?
Secondly, at this second, you can't root your phone due to the HBOOT. Once unrEVOked is back up this will sort it out. There is a way of downgrading your Desire to a lower HBOOT that can be rooted but if you're a n00b then it's probably best to either leave it or read a LOT until you're confident enough to try it.
Thirdly, a Gold card is needed if you want to flash a ROM other than the one that came with your Desire. E.g. I've got a SIM free Desire so I can only install official ROMs with an x.xx.405.x build number. If, for some stupid reason, I wanted to flash an operator specific ROM I'd need to use a Gold card. To check what you've got go to Settings>About phone>Software information
Thanks mate.. rooted my desire with unrevoked
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Didn't fancy answering my questions then?
Hi
My Desire is rooted with unrevoked. Can I somehow backup my stock rom? I did nandroid backup and titanium but that is another story. I want to backup my stock rom because of warranty. On shiped-roms there isn't my RUU available. Also how do I know that RUU is for SLCD?
This is my version : SLCD
baseband version : 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
kernel version : 2.6.32.15-gf5a401c [email protected]#1
build number : 2.29.404.2 CL263770
I'm guessing you made a typo and you're on 2.29.405.2?
If so, just download the RUU for that version and you're sorted
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
OR (if not working)

I do not understand too good this. In menu-settings-about phone-software information is next :
build number: 2.29.405.2 CL263770 release-keys
software number : 2.29.405.2
That doesnt match with my data in previous post. Is this because I rooted my phone?
No, it means you made a mistake in your previous post
Lol, I really did wrote down all specs before doing anything to my phone and doubleckecked. And backup. On two microsd cards. But It must be that. Anyhow thanx for links. I am now in peace.

What's the easiest way to Root a Third Party, Froyo HTC Desire?

I've got an HTC Desire not bought through any mobile provider and now running Froyo (sent OTA) and am UK based, in case that makes any difference.
What's the easiest and safest method to do this? Is there something I can use which is basically a one button click? Without having to resort to partitioning SD Cards etc... I've got a recent "My Backup Pro" backup but am guessing Rooting doesn't wipe the phone or revert back to Android 2.1?
Please note I've never Rooted (or Installed a Custom ROM) on either Android (or WinMob) before. I'd like to do this, so I can install SetCPU and hopefully increase battery life. I do work in 2nd line IT Support though, so am technically minded.
Thanks.
Subscribe to this question. I am in the same situation (but not in the UK) and thinking about rooting but too scared to go through a seemingly complicated procedure. Under Android software section in this forum I found threads discussing applications that can root phones. I wonder if anyone tried them on Desire? Also, can I root but still keep with the stock ROM? I don't think I want to start experimenting and changing ROMs. Thanks for your help.
Nice and simple - use unrEVOked 3.21
***BUT***
Before you do this it's best to check what ROM you're currently running on at present. To find this go to:
Settings>About phone>Software information>Software version
Make a note of the number (e.g. 2.29.405.2) and then go here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
If you can see a file matching your version number download it as it means should you ever need to return the handset under warranty you can reset it to factory.
If there ISN'T a file matching your serial number then you need to think hard if rooting is worth the risk as until a backup RUU file is available you'll never be able to go back to stock

I've finally got around to doing this, so I can use SetCPU and Autostarts. I'll report back if battery life increases.
It couldn't simpler btw. Thanks.
p.s - My software version is 2.29.405.5, which is listed in that link. Also thanks.
Download the RUU from here, it's a better link (less prone to failing):
http://www.multiupload.com/LEJCW182AH
Now I've run unrEVOked 3.32 on my Desire will I still be notified about OTA updates?
I know I probably don't need it but it's still good to know. Thanks.
Yes you will but do NOT accept them

Thanks. I presume because it will unroot my phone or could it now brick it?
If all it does is unroot the phone, can I not just root it again?

[Q] How risky is rooting the desire?

Hi,
I am considering whether to root my desire however i have seen many posts about people bricking their phones. Is bricking something that can be avoided by being very cautious and carefully following the correct steps or that there is always a risk of it occurring?
Also, how risky is unrooting?
Read this: [GUIDE] Turkeys' Ultimate Guide to Root Desire v42.1.1 "Misc Errors are History"
Something to do before following that guide is to make sure there is an RUU for you current ROM so you can go back to stock if needed. Go to:
Settings>About phone>Software information
And make a note of the 'Software version', e.g. 2.29.405.2
Then go here and, if you can see a file matching your version number, download it:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo

And don't forget to create a goldcard as it may be required to install the RUU back into your phone.
Only if you were going to use one different from your version. If you can get an RUU for the original ROM that same with it you don't need a gold card
Basically,it's a process that involves many "Holy $hit"s,like "Holy $hit I bricked my phone!" or "Holy $hit it doesn't boot!".But seriously,I rooted mine with no trouble after many Holy $hits. The only part worth the stress is flashing a radio. But I think that even that is dangerless when following instructions to the letter and knowing what you do.

I've rooted my phone twice till now, once by downgrading to 2.1 cos unrEVOked was not compatible with FroYo, and the 2nd time with FroYo and latest unrEVOked. Both times, it went smoothly without any problems.
Hi Guys thankyou for the replies so far. Just thought i would ask, my phone software number is 1.20.207.3 (O2 UK) and radio 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
but the version of rom availabe for download is 1.20.207.1
with Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
If i root and then at some point in the future unroot to 1.20.207.1 for warranty purposes will i still be able to send it back or do i need to unroot to 1.20.207.3?
First question is why aren't you on the O2 UK FroYo update?? Or have they pulled it??
I'd get this RUU for warranty purposes:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_144166_signed.exe
It's the O2 UK 2.2 update
Then go ahead and root it

Yes, i have had the option to upgrade to 2.2 for some time now but i did not want to ruin my opportunities to root my phone so i have ignored it.
Have download the link. Thankyou.
You can root it so there's no issue
I too was very hesitant before rooting but went ahead and have not looked back since. Like others have said, get your official RUU downloaded first and then go ahead. Also, make sure battery is fully charged and debugging mode is set on (on phone). Read the guide twice through before starting. It only takes about 10 minutes using Unrevoked 3.2
I didn't need to worry about a goldcard as my phone was from CPW and simfree and unbranded. You will need to create one of these if your o2 branded, before rooting.
Bear in mind though that if you want "complete" control over your phone you will have to do s-off as well using alpharev. Rooting is only a half way house. If you want to be able to mount the filesystem and perform on the fly mods to system files you need s-off also.
Doing both of these has enabled me to get my phone exactly as I want it.
Remember, you can always go back from all of this if you need to send it in to HTC for warranty repair. Its an easily reversible process with lots of guides available online.

[Q] how to unroot my desire baseband 33.44.00.32u

I am a new one here,i want to unroot my desire ,however ,i don`t know how to do it. my desire is SLCD screen, the baseband is 32.44.00.32U-5.09.0530.2,anyone here can help me ?I really appreciate
I am not good at this thing but look through this thread.
Also wait for a second opinion. There may be better methods
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Thanks. I brought it from Netherlands will it go some problem?
What's was software version running on your phone when you first got it? The baseband is the radio and isn't important (yet)
what are the benifits of unrooting the device?
- Clean slate to start again
- Returning handset under warranty
- Just using the phone as it is as rooting isn't needed for what you use your phone for (my option)
origanial 2.2
I can't update the OTA, so I try to recover but still have the superuser
can use the offical rom

This statement is as helpful as a chocolate teapot. What version number were you running, e.g. 2.10.405.2?
Without that we can't advise which stock RUU to flash to get back to working
my version number is 2.10.405.2 !!!
And that is what it came with out of the box? Or is that what it's saying now?
I just want to unroot my desire and back to original rom, could you give me a clean room to set?
Without knowing the ROM it was running ON THE DAY YOUR BOUGHT IT we cannot recommend which to use
I bought at september the rom is basic 2.2
But what was the software version on the day you bought it?? That is what I'm trying to find out!?!?! e.g. 1.21.405.2
software:2.10.405.2
build number:2.10.405.2 CL226611 release-keys
kernel version:2.6.32.15-g6a358a9
And that was it the day you bought it? If so, download the 2.29.405.2 RUU in my signature (click it) and just run that from your Windows PC with your phone connected in FASTBOOT
yes,thank you

[Q] ROM identification

hello,
i bought HTC Desire A8181 (from carphonewarehouse, UK), it came with 2.1-update 1, now it is 2.2 (2.29.405.5). i want to play with custom ROM. the following questions came to my mind. if I want to go back to untouched ROM? [i have not flashed my fone with custom ROM yet, but I want to. I want to understand the options. its a precautionary step I am taking]
1. how do I identify the RUU number for HTC A8181?
2. what is signed RUU?
3. if rooted with unrevoked3 but not flashed custom ROM can i receive HTC OTA updates?
5. what really changes when i root with unrevoked3?
sorry if my quarries sounds stupid, i am new to android, and learning the way of android.
tanx a lot

1) An RUU doesn't have a 'number' I am aware of, generally they are region or network provider specific. So being in England I would use the stock O2, Vodafone, Orange etc, RUU, or use any non-specific WWE (World Wide English) RUU.
2) A signed RUU is one that hasn't been modified and will run on any stock phone, the phone will only let you install a non modified RUU by default, I believe. (My definition maybe a little off here)
3) If you have changed nothing on the phone from stock, you can still recieve OTA updates, yes. Installing a custom ROM will stop you being able to use the OTA update feature.
5, lol) And to quote binary visions from AndroidForums
Rooting it doesn't fundamentally change the phone (it only provides the ability to fundamentally change the phone)

Essentially it's just an app in the app drawer than enables you to have administrative control over your phone. If you never use a program that requires 'root' access as it's known, It'll do nothing. If a program requires 'root' access, it'll just give you the ability to run it. Kinda like a school that locks the Control Panel on Windows from the school kids, stopping them from changing screen resolution and messing about with the PC.

1. Yes
2. HBOOT 0.93
3. Yes
re
thanks EddyOS and Kalavere.
I m feeling a bit confidant now.
but......................................
what is the meaning
[Kalavere] "If you have changed nothing on the phone from stock, you can still recieve OTA updates" (no custom rom)
and
[EddyOS] "Once rooted you CAN'T get OTA updates as it'll screw things up"
another stupid question - if i install any custom rom will it change IMEI no?
if i install RUU after, will it change IMEI no. (will any device specific number change)?
tanxa lot
IMEI can't be changed as it's hardcoded onto the phone
Once rooted it's not recommended to accept an OTA update, it'll remove root but not be 100% unrooted and cause more issues than it's worth so don't do it
