A stupid easy mod to an otterbox commuter case to allow securely sticking a magnetic macro / wide angle lens without phone modification.
Requirements:
Evo 4G
http://sprint.comOtterbox commuter case
http://www.otterbox.comCell phone macro lens
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14953JB Weld
The Macro lens comes with sticky metal rings that unfortunately don't stick to the otterbox case due to the recessed camera hole, however building up the camera hole with JB Weld works pretty well and the metal ring fits *perfectly* within the last tiny step.
* Test fit ring to make sure it sits cleanly in camera hole.
* Using a toothpick I *carefully* put the JB Weld on the camera hole stairs little by little to give the ring a good base.
* Take off white sticker film and place ring into JB Weld filled camera hole.
* Work from the inside of the camera hole and fill in any gaps so the JB Weld is filled within the space between the bottom of the metal ring and the open space to the camera hole "stairs"
* Let dry overnight BEFORE attempting to 'stick' a lens
After things are dry you should have a good base for those magnetic camera lenses.
The silver metal ring will look stock on the Otterbox case as long as you were careful with the JB Weld. I would recommend sliding the lens on and off to avoid putting unneeded pressure on the ring once dry.. (why tempt fate?)
The extra distance from the camera to the lens reduces how close the macro lens operates slightly, but is still allows you to get much better picture vs stock.
Good luck!

Very nice, thanks for sharing
nice job!!!!
Can you post some of the images you've taken with the modded lens and maybe provide a comparison to stock?
That is cool.

I know it sound stupid, but the camera lens does stick out. Is there anything out there that can protect it from getting scratch up?
Typically screen protectors have holes in them for the cameras.
With that said, I am not aware of any. Once i get a case for the device, I am hoping that will extend just a hair past the camera so that it is recessed.
About 99% sure there won't be any. No one wants a film over the lens. Well , mostly no one. Present company excluded.
I have used bestskinsever.com full body on my G1. Covers the camera lens, it does not affect the quality of the camera.
Well the phone does not SIT ON THE LENS....It does sit on the ring around the lens... so we should be fine
looking at mine the lense seems to protrude form the ring.
i found camera phone lense protectors at a store called daiso near my house. only $1.50

Yes, it does...look closely.
Just get either the Body Glove case or Seidio Innocase II and that will fix the camera lens problem. The lens now won't be exposed.
Martin fields screen protectors used to have little pieces they include with their screen protectors for exposed camera surfaces...i dunno if they're gonna make a screen protector for the Evo though
I make my own lense protector.
1. Trace outline
2. Put over extra screen protector from a 5 pack and cut.
Buddy of mine picked up a cheap case and screen protector combo off Ebay and the case looks sweet as it doesn't hide the phone like most cases but the camera lens isn't protected as it protrudes through the back cutout. My main concern is the camera lens. Has anyone come across a clear case whose back side cut out hole allows the camera lens to remain recessed inside the case?
Ideally i think everyone would love to find a case with a retractable back window for the camera.
I don't know who makes my case. I got it at best buy. I can lay the camera down on any surface without worrying about the lens. Having it roll around in your pocket with your keys is another story so I'm still careful with it but i was hoping to find a new case that retains some of the Evo's good looks.
On a side note, has any case manufacturer engineered a solution to this problem yet?

As far as I know there aren't any cases that protect the camera. One suggestion was to cut a cheap screen protector to go over the lens.

Right but my existing case protects the camera somewhat because the camera isn't sticking out of the case. Smart design. Wondering if there was a similar clear case on the market.

Hey guys. So I really like the feel of the naked Nexus, but I noticed that the camera part touches surfaces whenever laid down. Anybody ever had problems with this being scratched and affecting pics?

When it's laid down it doesn't exactly rests on the lens itself. It actually rests on the top metal ring of the lens, It's hard to see but if you look closely you can see it.

Even when considering how small the amount is that the silver ring is raised above the lense? (Its so small, I wouldn't even consider it raised above it, I'd consider them even)
The silver edge is raised above the surface of the lens. A case isn't going to help that much either. The lens is exposed no matter what...
Actually, the curved back makes the camera lens rise up a few millimeters. Only the bottom part of the area with the LED flash is actually touching the surface
Hey folks,
I'm after a replacement cover for my rear facing camera lens, but I need one with a steel rim, I use multiple camera attachments for fish eye, wide angle and macro lenses which are all magnetized. As it stands currently I have to stick a washer to the lens cover in order to use these lenses.
Ideally I'd like to replace the camera surround itself with a metal rim so I no longer require the washer, this would also improve image quality a bit as the lenses would be closer to the camera.
check ebay saw on for 7$
For Christmas my gf got me a 3 piece accessory camera lens for my one m8. I installed the metal ring that the lenses magnetically stick to on the main rear lens. Pictures looked not sharp. Even without the acc lens installed the pictures seemed still out if focus a bit and brightness was dim. Took the metal ring off and outs look good and sharp again. The metal ring wad on just the outside perimeter of the plastic lens so it seems weird that it would affect light gathering and focus. Looks like black plastic behind that area and it wasn't covering the lens opening at all. Does the lens look through all the surrounding plastic?
