How to use rom manager - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to switch over to amon ra recovery by using rom manager but the area that says flash an alternate recovery is grayed out. Do I need to buy the full version or place the .img file on my phone?

no, flash the clockwork recovery from rom manager then it should be able to be selected.

I meant rom manager not clockwork. The area to flash am alternative recovery is in gray.

Trying to switch from clockwork to RA recovery- wont work

Another noob so please bear with me.
I tried to switch from clockwork to RA through simpleroot, after doing so it threw a lot of error messages at me and rebooted the phone, After that, in Boot menu I went to select "recovery" and it reloaded the boot menu. It simply will not go into recovery mode anymore, and all my attempt to load any of the recovery.img files to the SD, it will continue to not load in into recovery. Please help!

if your good to go, booting and rooted, get to the market and install rom manager - re-install clockwork mod recovery...

Yes that seems simple, but what if I want to install RA recovery instead? do I have that option and if so, where would I D/L Ra from?
rom manager will download it, my latest version shows RA 1.7.0.1 as "Flash Alternate Recovery" and install it, you can switch back and fourth, I have the premium version, not sure if the freebie does it, but support them anywoo and send some bucks!
Yes it does allow you to, the free version just doesn't allow you to access the ROM Manager, online ROM list. But it does allow you to hot swap between ROM's on the fly (essentially).
~Jasecloud4
i've gone back and forth between the two using adb to flash the recovery.
Launch adb and run the command below (assuming you are familiar with adb and fully rooted)

Personally, I use the crap out of it regardless of my adb and shell skills, but on the road, this little ditty is awesome!
"Flash Alternate Recovery" is blacked out and unavailable for selection, am I skipping a step or will I need to purchase the premium version to access this feature to download RA Recovery?

Good nuff - it's well worth the bucks if you like to flash on the spot, backup and restore. I can flash till my hearts content, screw the pooch and restore in a heartbeat with all my stuff ready to roll.
How about the reverse question,,, I already have amon recovery image. I have tried to flash the clockwork over but no go. I have tried to installed from the rom manager, no go. I have fixed the permission. any Idea's, I would like to use the rom manager........ Someone Please help!
Search the forum for the RA zip file and just flash it with clockworkmod.

Here is the link for RA...there is a .2 version for those with bad blocks but .1 is the norm thus far. ROM manager should include the clockwork for you and once you've switched between the two it is pretty slick for on the fly mashing. Just know that CW has known issues with cleanly wiping...FYI

Ummm, no, don't do that, it is a recovery IMAGE not a ROM. Search for the thread for amon_ra's recovery, get the image file, use a terminal shell app from the market to flash the image. The instructions are in the first post of RA's thread.
I have the same problem, I used to be able to flash RA with rom manager, but stopped working for me as well. Even tried new SD card, wiping, nothing seemed to fix it. Now I jus keep the image in the root of my sd card and use the terminal commands. Almost as fast as clockwork, done it enough. Though as of late not use clockwork at all, just ra.
He's trying to go opposite from the OP?

If this is true - try uninstalling rom manager completely, if your not using it for backups and/or your nandroids aren't located in sdcard/clockworkmod - delete the folder and try to re-install from market. I don't believe nandroid and/or RA save to clockworkmod folder unless you have previously used rom manager?
And I have heard CW doesn't wipe cache or some such properly - never experienced issues to date...
This is true, but the rom manager was installed in my latest rom.. I will completely re-install the rom if needed just give me the order and directions, thank you in advance.
should I install a rom with out a rom manager, install the clockwork then reinstall my current rom????

Amon Ra Recovery?

Hi, I just download Fresh 3.2 with Clockwork Recovery but I need Amon Ra to use the Updater. I tried following Amon Ra's method he posted but neither one works (Idk how to do the first one). Using the terminal app on my phone after I type in "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img" it says "error opening /sdcard/recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img: No such file or directory "
The file is in the root of my SD card so why isn't it recognizing it?
Nevermind I got it. The command wasmissing a "-".
For future reference, it's even easier to just download ROM Manager and use that to install RA. It installed the latest version for me yesterday, no problem.

You you can still use clockwork with amon_ra, you just can't backup with it. If you have the premium, you can still download roms, or use it to go to recovery.

There is really no need to use a ROM manager at all, just do a little reading and learn to flash things manually (good place to start is my post here: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/18690-alot-of-the-same-questions-for-google-apps-market/ see post #2). The instructions are specific to cyanogen, but will work for any rom. no need to flash the gapps package if you are using a sense rom.
Way to revive an old thread btw.
Problem is when you rename recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan file into recovery.img you don't realize that recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan file has already an .img file extension. By mistake you rename recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img as recovery.img.img
Because your operating system hides file extensions as default.
Just rename recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan file as image only.

[Q] ClockWork Recovery App question.

Hi
I root my HTC EVO about 2 weeks ago. When Unrevok ask me to install the custom recovery I answer yes (CWM V4.0.1.4). Everything went great. After that I download the Rom Manager App to manage my backups.
On the Rom Manager App when I press on "Backup Current Rom" I get this prompt "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing!. Install the recovery though Rom Manager First".
It is safe to install the ClockworkMod Recovery even do I have CWM V4.0.1.4 ?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, rom manager will just re-flash it to the latest version.

Is it really that much better? I kinda like the ROM manager that came with my CM7 Rom, and I know that prefers CWM.
Or do yourself a bigger favor and install twrp.

ROM Manager has a history of not being as efficient as it promises and making mistakes in backups. It also will not do a correct wipe of your system before flashing a new ROM, which creates problems, potentially, with FC's, etc...

TWRP is not there yet. They lack the wipe boot feature which will screw up alot of ROM installs. Ra Recovery is still the way to go, plus all ROMS that have issues flashing in CWM have issues in TWRP. Once TeamWin fixes the major issues with TWRP then it will be the recovery to use. Presently it is still flawed.
If I have ROM manager can I just download and flash RA Recovery over that without having to flash the PC36IMG.zip? I'm new to this so I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

If you have the android sdk installed on your system just boot to your bootloader and select fastboot. Then place the file in .img format in your android-sdk-windows\tools directory then rename the file to something shorter, I usually go with amonra.img. then navigate to that directory with cmd. Then type fastboot flash recover amonra.img this will flash the new recovery. However if you don't have the sdk installed then you will need the pc36img.zip format place it on the root if your sdcard and reboot the phone while holding power+vol up. The bootloader should detect the file and ask if you wish to apply the update. Press vol up to accept the update, and it will flash the new recovery. Now once you do this you will need to make all new backups because any backup made with CWM will not work with ra recovery.

Quick question with ROM manager

I rooted my phone earlier today using Chainfire's CF auto root. Rooted and everything worked fine. So was looking around today and found some ROMs I want to try. I downloaded Rom Manager to make a backup, but every time I try to do a backup, it says need clockwork mod recovery.
I click install.
Then it brings me to something that says "Flash ClockworkMod Touch" under "Recovery".
But then under "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery" it says "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery"
Which do I click? I want this backup so I can flash roms safely.
I wouldntvuse rim manager, but I dont have another suggestion for ya.i woukd wait until smarter minds wake uo and install twrp asap.

The reason it says that is because there are two diff versions of cwm available. One is the regular version and the other "touch" version. The touch version cost money while the other version is free. Rom Manager will work to flash cwm. I helped test it for koush:thumbup: personally I prefer twrp but it really doesnt matter.
With that being said I wouldnt use rom manager for anything else other than flashing the recovery. Do all your rom flashing, backing up...ect in recovery manually. Cheers and good luck:beer:

I wouldn't use ROM manager for anything accept flashing a recovery as stated above. That being said I would highly recommend grabbing goo manager from the market and flashing twrp recovery. Once done, boot in recovery using goo manager or 3 button combo(volume up+power+home button). Make a backup manually in recovery.
Use Goo Manager. It will allow you to install TWRP, which is touch and free, and better the CWM IMO.

Okay, so I got GooManager.
I have no ROMs or anything but if I click "flash ROMs" and "Try to find one for me" it pulls something, but I don't know what.
Is that what I'm looking for?
Sorry, first time rooting/trying to flash.
No. Don't use it to flash ROMs or backups or anything like that. Just use it to flash twrp and boot in recovery. When in the app hit menu then install open script recovery. Let it install then choose the reboot recovery option. Now you can make a backup and flash ROMs manually in recovery.

[Q] How do I flash CWM over TWRP? Rom manager not an option

Hi,
I have a Bell Galaxy S3 that has TWRP installed right now, but for some reason, only about 1/4 ROMS I try to flash on it lately, doesn't work. I would like to give CWM a try again, but I can't seem to find a way to flash it back. ROM manager doesn't give me the option and I can't find an up to date flashable TWRP or ODIN .tar file.

I'm in a similar position with TWRP already installed but ROM manager gives me the option to flash CWM. If I use ROM manager will it still replace TWRP? I'm assuming it does, but I wanted to double check first.
PS I'm running an LG Optimius 4X HD, but a Google search for my question brought up this thread, which saves me starting my own.

Yes. Personally, I used the latest release of Philz Touch which is based on CWM. There is a version that can be flashed via a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) and a tar version that can be flashed in the PDA section of desktop Odin.
