Hi,
Can we connect our HTC Desire to a PC via USB cable, and then connect to the internet via that PC internet connection?
We are able to use this way on Windows Mobile 6.x + Microsoft ActiveSync.
Thanks.
I think so, please try the following:
* Make sure you have installed HTC Sync first and have your SIM card inserted in your phone.
1. Make sure your phone’s data connection is turned on.
2. Connect the phone to the computer using the USB cable.
3. On the Connect to PC screen, select Internet sharing, and then tap Done.
Hope that works.

I am wondering, if I have mobile broadband card that I use to catch 3G internet...could I attach the Desire via USB cable to my laptop and share the internet connection between both my laptop and phone?
Not tethering (using phone's internet as main internet source for computer) rather -
Mobile Broadband Card ----> Laptop & Desire?

I'm not entirely sure this would work as the phone might resort to using it's own variety of data plans.

Well...I have been wondering if you could share the internet connection from a broadband card between a laptop and mobile phone (connected via USB cable). I guess I will just have to try it out when my phone gets here.
That is the other way around
You have described phone internet sharing or tethering.
What I meant is like this:
1. Your desktop PC is connected to internet
2. Connect your phone to the PC using USB cable
3. You can now browse the internet in your phone ... using internet connection from the PC.
Reverse tethering. We can do this with WM + ActivySync (I dont remember the exact option).
Well, we can forget about this ... I have searched last night and Android simply cant do it.
Why we need this? Sometimes, at work, we cant connect our phone to the office WiFi and 3G is not available.

I also have this need.
In case HTC ships updates on-the-air it would be much better not to lose some of the limited 2GB data plan per month I have.
Can you not just set up your pc as a wifi access point and the connect your phone via wifi?
That is a way, creating wifi adhoc, but sometimes you cant (restricted by security policy).

Screw security policy! ;?P
Using a adhoc connection would be the simplest (and best?). But if you can't (not allowed) to set up a adhoc connection, you could (unless bridging is forbidden, but then tere's not much you can do..) connect a wifi router/ap to your ethernet card (if it's in use, use a USB-version). Bridge your network connection with the ethernet card and the router/ap and then connect to that..
A long shot? Perhaps! But it should work. If you set the ap to not broadcast its SSID it's harder for others to detect..
And you should be able to run a router/ap on batteries..
Just an idea.. :?D

Yes, i understand what you mean now, this feature was available on WM and ActiveSync... i remember setting it up while going through the ActiveSync Wizard, but AFAIK, i could not find a similar option for this with the Desire
EDIT: Could you not try setting up Ad-hoc mode on phone and PC (the PC will have a wireless network adaptor), then turn Internet Connection Sharing on in Windows, and connect the phone to the PC?
I did, but it does not work with my work laptop. Probably restricted.
But I found a WiFi access point already Installed by my co-worker ...
Well, this feature is not really important, but useful ...

I agree and it's a shame... this was useful when I had it working on my WM device.

Could someone please explain how to do this. I can see how to set up the ad-hoc network and to set it allow internet sharing. But a wi-fi scan on my HTC Desire does not find the network.
unfortunately reverse tethering or connecting the phone through computer's connection (through an ad hoc wifi) is not possible, which quite frankly is very annoying, hopwfully they will fix this in an upcoming ROM or something.
[q] same prblm but diff device
i have an android tablet. I want 2 connect to the net. But dont have wifi @ home. any way to connect my ericsson phone (or any other 3g modem) via bluetooth or usb(yes the tab acts as a usb mass storage host) to connect to the net as the tab doesn't hav a sim card port. I don't think that there is a way to do this at the moment with out flashing a Rom, however I'm using RCMix S GingerSense Rom, it seems that HTC Sense version 2.1 has added "internet pass-through" as a option when you plug the phone into a PC, however will HTC leave this in if/when they do an official release I don't know.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Yeah, if you install a sense 2.0 or 2.1 Rom it has an internet pass through option which allows you do do that

Hello people
My Desire was connecting fine to my PC yesterday and I could access the SD card but now when I try it says device not recognized. I tried reinstallin HTC sync and driver but same problem and have also restarted PC and phone. Im on Windows 7 64bit.
anyone??
this is driving me crazy
But once you connect your phone via USB to PC, on phone screen it will show 4 items of connections, did you choose the one of storage card??
I'm also having issues with HTC Sync.
It normally connects fine and syncs with Outlook OK. Every now and again (about twice a day) it will show the "charging" icon when plugged into the USB port (on any computer) but not recognise the fact that it's connected via USB. The "connection options" dialog isn't even accessible.
If I reboot the phone it immediately connects and starts working, so I know it's not a PC issue. It's like the phone thinks it's connected via a charging cable and not a full USB data cable even though it's the cable that came with the phone.

I'm having this exact same problem, would rather not have to reboot the phone every time I want to access the SD card via the PC as I do it quite a lot!
Anyone know of a fix? Or is there a way of bringing up the 'Connection Options' dialog as I can't seem to find it anywhere on the phone, only the Connect to PC options which lets you set the default mode it's supposed to go into when connecting via USB
to mark on HTC (setting/connect to pc/ask me), install HTCSync.exe on PC, disconnect all usb cables(including HTC ), to connect only HTC device to PC .... it helps me
if u dont want to have to reboot every time u want usb use USBSwitcher its free app hat mounts the sd on ur pc
still doesnt fix getting to tether/htc sync
why i alwayes need to restarts the device to comeup with the connection menu PLEASEEEEEE FIX PLEASEEEE :..(
up up up up
Setting>connect to pc. Check the 'ask me' box.

Is not this.
Checked or not, when connecting the usb cable, it should show something like "charging only" or "htc sync", but only shows "USB debugging connected".
Just trying to establish some relation between our devices, do you guys have "extended controls" installed?
Hey guys. I have been using cyangen RC rom and I have a problem. I use.my phone to tether. When I plug it in I get USB and USB debugger and tether works fine built in froyo. If I disconnected however and replug my USB in I do not get USB nor USB debugger to show up even if I go into the menu and try to turn them on myself. Because of this for some weirs reason the built in tether wont work unless both of these are on which forces me to reboot my phone everytime. Wtf is going on?
When I connect my evo to my pc via usb it only charges the phone, it won' allow me to access my evos harddrive or sync or tether. Is there a simple setting that I'm missing? I'm not rooted and running GB 2.3.3. Sorry but I'm a noob and would appreciate some help.
try going into settings and look for the connection type. you can change it. its probably just set to charge only and not ask. Don't know where in settings exactly cuz i haven't rocked sense since...since...since....
Can it have anything to do with usb debugging being enabled or not?
I've had the LG G3 from T-mobile for more than a month now. It worked fine all along, until today I just noticed that when I connect the phone to my laptop via a USB cable it starts charging right away. There's no option that would allow me to view the internal storage as a drive in My Computer or connect it in MTP mode or something. Previously, it used to do this automatically, I mean the drive would appear automatically.
When I try to tether my phone's 4g connection to my laptop through the USB cable, it works. So, I'm guessing nothing's wrong with my USB port or cable. Please help me!
