Size comparison (HD7, Venue Pro, Focus, Nexus One, iPhone4) - Windows Phone 7 General

Here is a nifty size comparison to gauge how some different devices compare to one another.
You can easily add another devices dimensions to compare those as well.
I really wish I could see a video or picture comparison of the Dell Venue Pro to something out there since I am stuck between it and the HD7.
http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_co...HD7-vs-Nexus-One-vs-iPhone-4-vs-Samsung-Focus

Thats pretty cool and its a good tool for seeing all the different sized phones and comparing them between each other.

The Venue is just thick. But I'm used to the 8125, TyTN, and Tilt 2. So it's thinner than those, lol.

HTC does a great job of producing a big screen device without adding too much bulk. Having used used a Galaxy S and an HD2 (almost identical in size to the Focus and HD7, respectively) the HD2 does not feel much bigger in the hand while at the same time the screen looks way larger.

this is true about htc i have the hd7 and its a huge phone yet in the hand and even pocket it feels no bigger that any other smart phone, plus the screen is immense i put it next to an ipod touch and it made me giggle for the first time ever i noticed how much space was around the screen no being used. yes the res is the same as smaller screen phones so you get no extra on the screen but the size makes it feel so much more impressive and useable. plus the odd shaped sides make it so comfy in the hand and pocket feels paper thin yet wide enough for a good grip.

The HD2 feels 10x heavier than the Vibrant though.
Feels is the key word there...

[Q] HTC HD7 vs Samsung Focus

I'm not sure which phone to get. I have the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate right now which is just like the focus and i like the captivate (coming from the iPhone 4). I'm just not crazy about android and I have always been a lover of windows mobile. The HD2 is one of my favorite phones out and that's basically the HD7. So which one would you go for. My contract is up with at&t on November 9th so I'm not sure if i should stay and go with the focus or switch to t-mobile and get the HD7. What it really comes down to is The super amoled screen which I love vs the 4.3" screen which I love.
I would go with Dell Venue.
I'm going with the Focus myself.
Haha I'm in the exact same spot. I have a Captivate but am considering going over to WP7. Stuck between the Focus and HD7.
From a practical standpoint I'm leaning more towards the Focus simply because it has an accessible Micro SD slot and of course the superior screen quality. But I love the HD7's form factor and screen size.
Need to see the HD7 in person to determine if I'm willing to take the step back in screen quality. That's really the deciding factor.
I just pre-ordered the HD7. Don't trust engadget's review of the screen. Every other video of the phone shows it is much more vibrant and the blacks are a lot deeper. Probably because every time engadget showed it was at an angle, when realistically the phone will only be viewed directly.
EDIT: I'm coming from an amoled equipped Nexus One.

As am I. I was originally going to go with HD7/Venue but then decided Focus.
I have to go with the HD7. I have been a fan if HTC for years. At&t 8125, T-Mobile Mda, wing, G1, touch pro 2, HD2, It's only right for my to go back bow that they have another top notch device. I love my vibrant the screen is amazing but
4.3 inches for movies is just better seeing that everything thing is close to being the same. I can live with 16gigs I have 32 right now and have used only 10

I'd say the Focus because the size is perfect, has a super AMOLED, and is said to have a slightly more responsive screen.
I'm personally hoping the Dell Venue Pro eventually hits Verizon since T-Mobile is just a launch partner.

I know its so hard to make a decision. I love my super amoled but the hd2 has the same screen as the hd7 so if you want you can make your comparison from there.

Put the HD2 and the HD7 next to each other and you will see that the HD7 is clearly a better screen. The screen is more comparible to the evo.
Windows Phone 7 is a complete programming break from all earlier incarnations. It would stand to reason that some features wouldn't be implemented in the first pass. Windows Mobile was losing market share at an astonishing rate, and one of the bigger reasons was the lack of a cohesive, polished, smoother user experience. Despite the ability to tether and cut/paste. The marketplace has obviously spoken, and said that user experience is far more important that feature set. Why would a for profit company emphasize the exact ideology that resulted in nothing but eroding market share, when other companies took the exact opposite approach with mind blowing success?
Focus.
Better screen. Much better camera. Expandable memory.

I wouldn't jump on the hd7 just yet. I'm using the hd2 because my iphone4 got stolen and im tired of paying full price for iphones, I would stick with ur iPhone get it unlocked for t-mobile, and use it until something goes wrong, or sell it on ebay for some ridiculous price and get yourself covered for the hd7

im on the same boat... i have an evo and need to dump sprint since its signal absolutely blows at home...
originally i want to get me an hd7, but im getting a bit worried after reading some initial reviews (poor build quality, sub par camera) ill hold off on judgement on the screen till i see it personally since i have a newer build evo (hw3) and the screen looks fantastic compared to the hd2 and early evo's (hw1-2), so if the hd7 uses the same screen then it will pass...
on the other hand there is the samsung focus with the super amoled screen, vastly superior battery life reported by reviews, and superior camera, my concerns with this one is the lack of camera flash, plasticky build, and at&t's tiered data plans (has anyone had issues with this since it was applied?)
bottom line...
HD7:
+ screen size, dual flash, kickstand (love it), more developer attention, unlimited data (tethering?)
- battery capacity, average camera, average build, inferior contrast
Samsung Focus:
+ super amoled screen, camera quality, slimmer, battery life
- cheap feel, no camera flash, limited data
opinions? ? ?

For the negatives: I've heard mixed reviews on the 'cheap feel,' some say it's not that bad, and even feels pretty good. There is an LED flash on the back, and I still have an unlimited plan.
For the positives: You didn't mention the expandable storage that the focus has, which for me is a huge plus. I've also seen a video with a Samsung exec jabbing his pen into the screen showing that it wont scratch (gorilla glass or something similar?).
Lastly, I'm not sure the battery life is a plus (maybe it is compared to the HTC?), as several sites list it as only average or even below average.

thanx for the clarification i must have missed the flash on the back
battery life on super amoled is awesome compared to lcd's, that is till you go to an app that has a white background (email, web, facebook, twitter) so i guess thats something i have to keep in mind...
if i could somehow get unlimited data it would be a wrap
Just read through the thread and having owned a HD7 for a week now i'll give you some pointers:
Pro's
- The Screen is superb. It's huge, bright (brightness on high, not auto) and colours are vibrant. I've had the desire with it's AMOLED screen and can say the difference is minimal, plus when you've got them next to each other the HD7's sheer screen size outways the miniscule (even unnoticable) difference in quality. It is not the same screen as used in the HD2.
- The Build quality is brilliant. No creaks or bends, and the kickstand is firm and sturdy.
- The screen is the most responsive i've ever used. It's fantastic and imo (dare i say it?) better than that apple one. It responds instantly to your touch and scrolling through menus/webpages/etc is flawless. The pinch to zoom is incredibly impressive compared to others too.
- The camera is brilliant. It's crisp, the LED's are rediculously bright, and it takes pictures really quickly. I've been taking about 5 or 6 pictures per 10 seconds which is good if you're like me and take loads then pick the best one.
Cons
- The Battery life on my particular HD7 is dreadful, i get a day and a half at the most with what I would say is average usage. I have to charge it every night which i'm not too fussed about but if that bothers otehrs it's definately something to consider.
- The autofocus on the camera during video recording can be hit and miss. Sometimes it out-focuses itself, but if you hold it for a second or 2 it sorts itself out, so not a problem for me really.
*EDIT* After a further 2 weeks i can confirm Battery life has stabalised and after a "full day" (7am till 11pm) of use i still have half a battery left.
Can the HD7 take an SD card as currently looking at various win 7 devices
Here is the deal guys, Windows Phone 7 was never supposed to have SD card support, I think 16 gigs is more than enough, but anyways. Every time you change the Omni in the focus, you have to reformat I believe your device, so keep that in my mind.
Why MS didn't put SD support is beyond me, but what Samsung did is just use that as expendable memory, it sort of creates 1 partition, if I am understanding it correctly

[Q] Anyone hoping there's an Incredible 2?

I think the thunderbolt is pretty bad ass... but i came from a Droid X back to the Incredible just because the 3.7 screen size, thinness, and trackball just makes for a better device for me at least.
Anyone hoping HTC and Verizon release an Incredible2 with the same or slightly thinner size and upgraded specs (LTE, dual core, higher screen res.. etc) to go along side the bigger Thunderbolt?
I would love something like that. An even more refined version of this phone. It's sleek already, but as with all tech devices, will age rather quickly. Sometimes I think these 4+ inch screens are too big, the Inc is a great size. Inc2 should also have a front facing camera in addition to what you said (LTE, dual core, higher res screen). It would be my next phone without a doubt

Yeah I had an X for a while and finally went back to the incredible for just that reason. the added bulk outweighs the benefits of the bigger screen. The incredible is just such a sweet feeling phone in the hand it just feels like a super modern device.. not a mini tablet.
I have a fascinate i'm playing with now and it is definitely more sleek than the X but i havent activated it for a few reason. its still fatter and taller than the incredible, although thinner. and samsung hasnt released froyo for it.
the build quality on the incredible is also on par with the best smartphones. the buttons click firmly, soft touch back. nice red accents and the battery cover doesnt slide of so easily like moto devices.
I'll probably stick with the incredible line for a while if they keep it alive.
See, the beauty of the larger phones is that they have LCD screen types... which not only makes daytime sight easier, but you can use an app to change the LCD density, thus increasing your resolution. It's not a massive view change, but it certainly does make a difference when you think about how big that screen will be. Every little bit counts.

i'm pretty sure the Thunderbolt has the same SLCD technology that my Incredible has other than size obviously. and while you can change the LCD density with an app... it makes some apps not render correctly.
thunderbolt= undervolt
I say undervolt because i cant beleive we will not get our dinc 2 the way it should have been. hdmi out is fairly standard on top end devices.. not undervolt.. we all like our smaller dincs or we would get evo's or motorola devices... again not undervolt..big and ugly. Even when the dinc first came out with verizon it was the featured phone for only 30 - 60 days. then not even on display. and how much fun was getting the tv out cable( wich many verizon emplees told me does not exist) only to find out it does not work very well..Htc makes some of the best phones! Add verizon...Htc + big red= undervolt... too bad .

[Q] Will having a smaller screen affect my experience

hello people,
okay im thinking of buying a WP7 device but but i can't decide between Omnia 7 or LG optimus 7,
i can get either one of them in 16gb, as i can just get the omnia 7 16gb from germany change the language to english and the optimus comes in 16gb only anyway so storage isn't problem
the only difference is that the omnia is bigger and has better screen according to people, but i dont really care about having/not having an SAMOLED while the lg looks slimmer and easier to hold, and alot of people have said the back and search button on the omnia is too sensitive so im guessing that would be bad when reading or playing games
so question 1; can you stick the omina in a skinny jeans while sticking an earphone in the head phone jack or is it too big?
2: would having a 3.8inch screen on the lg affect gaming and reading books on the phone as it seems almost all smartphones are required to have a 4.0inch or bigger screens
Well i have a Mozart because of its nice "pocket-size".
But i have to admit that the Omnias screen is really nice and has a lot of advantages while browsing/reading etc, but i prefer a phone which easily fits into my pocket because i am not reading or surfing all the time.
Seriously, most of the time your phone will be in your pocket, so you have to test out, which phone you prefer
I'm posting this from an LG quantum. I believe it has the smallest screen of all wp7's. I've checked out the focus, and to be honest I don't at all think my experience is any worse. Everything comes thru clear and looking very high res. And even that would be a plus of a smaller screen, higher pixel density.
These phones are very high end, I don't think screen size will make that much of a difference.
Oh and skinny jeans? Really? 2007 called, it wants its feminine douchebag fashion back.
Omnia7 has a better form factor and of course the amazing amoled, and IMHO it does matter. What I don't like with the optimus 7 is its home key button, it looks quite cheap and I believe it doesn't wake up the screen if pressed coming from sleep. As for the omnia7 back and search buttons, its true...being quite sensitive. I have a fried who has big hands and keeps on hitting it accidentally as he uses the device for browsing. For me, I already get the hang of using it without hitting it. So it takes a little getting used to but the pros outweigh the cons that's for sure especially if you say you can get the 16GB version. I only have the 8 but I'm I still have 2 GB left after all the stuff I have.

I would go for the LG. I've had my HD7 for about a month and I hate the capacitive buttons more than I could have ever imagined hating them. I have to always be conscious of how I hold my phone because if your finger grazes the wrong part of the phone you'll get kicked out of whatever you were doing. I type way slower than I used to type on my much smaller iPhone because I need to be extra careful when I hit the space bar; if I overshoot it by a millimeter I hit the home key. I also type slower because I can't hold the phone with my optimal grip, the capacitive buttons force you to keep your hands clear of that area.
For the life of me I can't figure out why someone would prefer capacative buttons.
I would go for the LG just because it feels better built the Samsung is all plastic and feels a little cheap.
Screen size I think is negligible in this case as .2 inches isn't really a big deal. At least I don't think so.

The size difference is about .5 I believe when you are comparing thinness.
I would say that the screen difference is neglectable at best.

Omnia 7 uses metal. Probably explains why it is 20g heavier than the Focus.

Yeah actually at first I wondered why LG would make the home button on the quantum a physical button, but after reading about the sensitivity, and noticing how sensitive the back and search button on mine are, I'm glad they did. And I assume it was on purpose with this knowledge?
You can use the iPhone as a comparison, assuming you've used one. It has a 3.5" screen, and I find it's big enough for most tasks.

IMO 4" are better than 4.3" in this case HTC really has lost their way.
That said, I wish there was a Samsung device with a 4.3" (or perhaps even 4.5") screen.
i wanted to get the Samsung Omnia 7 just for the amoled screen. But 8GB of memory is too little for me so i got the HD7. The screen wasn't as bad as i expected (coming from the HD2) its really nice and colourful.
4,3? damn before i would buy that i would go for a 7" one

My point wasn't that bigger was too big, but that if 3.5" isn't too small, then neither will 3.8/4" be.

The Omnia 7 has a more or less complete metal casing.
I'd get the LG Optimus 7. I compared it with the Samsung Omnia 7 in a store and I THINK THE SCREEN ON THE LG IS BETTER.
Why:
1)
Most OLED screens have a lower effective resolution than normal LCDs because they have fewer subpixels. If you compare both you will notice text on webpages etc is looking jagged on OLED displays and much smoother on normal LCDs.
Search for "pentile matrix" on google.
2)
OLED screens consume big amounts of power when the image is very bright (black text on white background like on most web pages). To reduce power the OLED is auto-reducing brightness if an image with many white areas is displayed. WTF! This would p*ss me off. At least the store units did this and changed brightness while scrolling from dark areas to bright areas on a web page.
3)
OK the black levels on OLED are better but the LG's arent that bad.
Viewing angles arent good on the LG but I dont notice this at all in daily use.
Other points:
4)
Hardware buttons instead of touch (though the buttons arent that great but they do their job).
5)
Many free LG exclusive apps available.
6)
Hacking: Integrated MFG-tool with many options like a basic registry editor without unlocking (unlock works fine btw).
I bought an Optimus 7 and its working quite well. Second on my list was the Mozart which is also very nice, but I activated the capacitive search button by mistake all the time while testing.
Optimus 7 downsides:
-Headphone out has sligtly audible background noise, even more when on an active GPRS connection
-My device creaks a bit if you press it in between your fingers with force
-Pinkish spot in center of pictures taken with camera
-Supplied headphones are a piece of **** at least compared to my Koss Porta Pro
-First unit had broken bluetooth, had to send it in for repairs, now its ok
-Ringer volume is kinda low (no secondary speaker)

What's your favorite WP7 device??

Discuss and inform, what is your favorite WP7 device thusfar. I have posted my opinions on the WP7 devices I've been fortunate enough to own thusfar. Feel free to add your input.
HTC Surround- Honestly the only WP7 device that I flat out dislike. The touchscreen is dodgy, the gimmick speaker is pointless, the device is bulky, it feels like a 1990's cellphone in your pocket, and it just feels cheap. The phone's only redeeming feature is the OS.
LG Quantum- My initial impression of this device was poor but after getting used to the keyboard there's not much to complain about on the device. The screen is a bit smaller than I'd like and a little washed out but LG's OEM specific apps make the device a keeper.
Samsung Focus- Before I tried the DVP this felt like the posterboy for WP7. The device is a little lighter than I would have liked but aside from that it worked astoundingly, apps load fast, sound is crystal clear, the SAMOLED display does amazing things with the homescreen on a dark theme, it's just generally a beautiful device.
HTC HD7- My first WP7 device and I thought it was great til I tried the Focus and the DVP, after using one of the higher quality devices the phones faults shine through from the milky whites to the slow loading apps all the way to the little errors that only some of the HTC devices seem to have despite the OS apparently being the same across all platforms.
Dell Venue Pro- Ahh, my baby, don't let the fact that there are some complaints about a number of the devices scare you off from this phone because it is without a doubt the best WP7 device released stateside. The AMOLED display has better whites than the SAMOLED and is just as good when it comes to darks. It just feels right in your hand from the ergonomic curvature to the laser-etched backing. This phone screams quality. My only complaint is the camera... I don't know why they put such a terrible camera on an otherwise flawless device, I can at times take clear pictures but with the slightest movement my pictures turn out looking more like modern art...
Samsung Omnia 7-
LG Optimus 7
HTC Mozart
HTC Trophy
HTC 7 Pro (Arrive)- I really want to like this device but it just feels extremely last-gen (Yes I know our processors are old blah blah blah) It's bulky, the spring mechanism feels ready to break nearly every time you slide it up, it's gut it's fair share of issues but overall it's usable though I fear for the spring. The keyboard is amazing on it and if you were a fan of the TP2 I whole-heartedly suggest this.
Voted for the HD7. The screen size was excellent and had a very nice image.

Hasn't been released where I'm at yet. I've only had about 5 minutes experience with the device but all in all I'm not impressed with HTC's line-up as a whole.
Focus now, HD7S later.
optimus 7... mmmm
Omnia 7 based on speed of memory and the most professional looking (IMO).
The DVP is great looking as well, but I couldn't wait around for it to be released.
I like the form-factor of my Focus a lot. I voted for that, on that basis alone.
In the US you really only have a choice of the Samsung Focus or HTC HD7 as arguably the best WP7 handsets and even then they're exclusive to a carrier. Europe definitely got the better phones!

You could definitely make an argument for the DVP. I feel the delays, hardware issues, and lack of availability sort of ruined it - for me at least.

Eh, I'm talking comparing one of each side by side, you can definitely tell which is better based on the phone itself.
I am obviously biased because I own the device, but I voted LG Optimus 7 due to the following reasons:
-- Fastest WP7 phone because of the type of (16GB) memory it uses
-- Cheapest WP7 phone in the market when I bought it
-- Longest lasting WP7 phone with a 1500mAh battery
-- Hardware buttons ensure you don't accidentally press them
-- Excellent build quality, with an easy-to-remove metal back-cover
-- Gorilla Glass - mine survived a fall from 5.5 feet

Must agree here, I also have it.
I add
-- Hardware main WP7 buttons
Main minus, from the device point of view, like the only one:
Worse camera performance in difficult/dark light conditions (sharpness, colour is fine though)
I really love the Focus, but it's just my personal opinion.
Agreed on the Optimus 7 - it is built like a tank. Only complaint is the screen is a little blah compared to SAMOLED, but no surprise there. The hardware buttons are a big plus IMHO. Focus second. DVP is too big / heavy unless you really need a keyboard.

Another vote for HTC HD7.
Hd7 for me too, it might not be built out of the most amazing material or have the most vibrant screen, but this phone is straight up beautiful, the silver grills on the front really make it look nice.
you might as well have asked what phone do you have?.... close this pointless thread.

Too big

So I have waited and waited for this thing to launch. Constant out of memory issues on my ageing Desire but I have held out.
My big fear was that when this launched it would be huge.
And it is
So is this too big. Perhaps going for a Nexus S (which should get ICS soon anyway) would be the way to go but then with that big screen comes a big resolution and does that mean ICS is going to be sub par on anything with a smaller resolution display.
Choices choices choices.
Just buy SGS2 then it still is the best phone out there.

The SGSII is just about the same size as the GN....maybe a TINY bit smaller...
You gotta remember that the Galaxy Nexus has no capacitive buttons, and a very small bezel along the screen. It's essentially the size of a standard 4 in phone. I wouldn't worry so much about the size.

Not a standard 4" phone. Maybe closer to a 4.3-4.4" phone.
SGSII:
125.3 mm (4.93 in) H
66.1 mm (2.60 in) W
8.49–9.91 mm (0.334–0.390 in) D
GN:
135.5 mm (5.33 in) H
67.94 mm (2.675 in) W
8.94 mm (0.352 in) D
It's bigger than the SGSII, and the SGSII is a big phone (but thin, which IMO is actually worse because it's HUGE and absurdly thin at the same time).
The typical 4" phone is quite a bit smaller, and for me, more comfortable. Although the Amaze does fit pretty nice in the hand it itself is fairly massive.
Basically, what they did was take the body of the SGSII, take out the buttons and throw a .35" larger screen in there, while making the phone itself about 10mm longer, 1mm wider and even slightly thinner than the thickest of SGSII's but towards the top end. Note that the depth measurements are at the thinnest point of each phone. The phone has the same size screen and resolution as the SGSII HD which was announced for Korea in late September.
But the GN tapers to 11mm which is thicker than the thickest point on the GSII

Lol I can't believe you're unsatisfied with your Desire... I'm still on a milestone but if you can I would say wait until the SSG3 or a newer phone with better specs if you are unsatisfied with the underwhelming specs (e.g. 4 yrs old gpu). Or if you just want a smaller phone look at the SSG2 but don't just neglect the Galaxy Nexus because of how it looks on video, when it goes on display in stores you should head to your local best buy (or whichever store will have it on display near you) and at least try it out and get a feel for the phone. Just my 2 cents

I'm with you, I think it will be too big. It might not be as big as it sounds, but it will be a large phone, and once you add a case....
If it was 1/2 an inch smaller in height I'd be robbing old people right now to get some cash together for it. But the 5+" height leaves me a little ambivalent, I really dig the form factor of my Nexus One.
