Instead of whining about what WP7S isn't going to be (because Microsoft surely won't change their plans and development anymore) let's start to develop and hack this thing.
The most important question for the developers here would be: How to install apps without going through the marketplace. Just as we did it ever before here on XDA-Devs with cabs.
Because I am not alone when I say I'm not ready to pay 75$ a year for a marketplace developer subscription just to release my small just-for-fun freeware app.
Maybe there is already someone out there who figured it out...

You can just load it with XNA Studio. I do it all the time with my Zune.
Then let's hope that this will still work for WP7S.
There's an option to deploy your project in VS too to deploy to a device, so I presume thats how you would install a non market place app
All phones will be "locked." It appears that only developers who pay the $99/yr fee will be able to unlock their device(s).

Yes, but this only works with projects for which you have the source code. And this is only for debugging.
I hope someone will hack this, so that we free developers can just post our xap and all users can install it on their phones without marketplace.
Or Microsoft should rethink their business plans for marketplace. Free Apps should stay free. The developers are already spending a lot resources to develop freeware apps. Why forcing them to pay 99$/yr, too??
It's ok for devs who wants to earn money with their app. Or for advertisers who create free apps just to advertise their company. But not for private free-time devs.
If Microsoft is able to do it for students then why not for all other freeware developers who doesn't want to sell their apps for different reasons (open source etc...).

I keep hearing about it. Is there a definitive source for this information?

I spoke with a Microsoft employee (Technical Evangelist Developer Platform & Strategy Group) at CeBIT this month and he told me that. He also told me that he himself is not happy about this decision especially for all those freeware developers.
Well, that sucks. They could have avoided users relying to hacking their devices to do basic stuff. Jailbreaking, cracked DRM and piracy it is then. They made their choice.
The various presentations at MIX mention developers unlocking their devices for deployment.
It's important to note that a lot of the marketplace details are still up in the air. The pricing may change. They've specifically stated that they haven't decided on the 5app (or is it 3, I forget) limit. They very well may allow developers to sign up for a free account and only publish free apps with no advertising. We shall see.
I'm sure they are having much more heated discussions about it than we here are.

Hey my Friends,
let me ask this question: I'm using an HTC HD2 with a Windows 7. I love it, but the camera is really bullsh..!
So I found an XAP, what gives me the full camera option.
Does it means, that I have to pay Microsoft, to put this App on? Or is there another way to install it on my phone?
This is not really hacking, because if I can't use my cam, I have to go back to the android system. That will hurt Microsoft even more?!?
Please let me know about your oppinions
Thanks

How will it hurt Microsoft for you to stop using their OS when you haven't paid for a licence for it?
I was amazed to read the policies of the next gen windows phone marketplace.
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...spx?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Especially the line:
"No limit to the number of paid apps submitted 5 free apps per registration, $19.99 each after that" .
And seeing that the only way to officially install apps on your wp7 phone is thru the marketplace, it will actually cost developpers money to provide them for free.
I assume microsoft really wants that 30% they get on paid apps. All i can say that this will discourage developers to create free apps and will encourage hackers to "jail break" wp7.
five apps per reg ... cmon only companies like resco or spb have more apps than that running at the same time ....
whats worse is this one :
Code:
Annual registration fee of $99
ull need to hand the suckers $100 for posting ONE free app
I suppose that'll keep only the serious developers in; hence improving overall apps quality. But seriously, the $99 annual fee is uncalled for.
An inclusion of an incentive of a waiver of this fee for achieving a sales target would be more effective for smaller players, and probably benefit Microsoft at the same time.
Probably to keep a lid on the number of free, junk apps. Makes the stores pretty hard to browse.
I wonder if an application with a 100% unlimited full trial mode counts as a "free" or a "paid" app. That would just be a good way to post donation-based apps...
I don't think that the 5 free app limit includes ad-supported apps.

All apps will have a trail mode already built in and won't be considered a free app.
you can see the Android App Market. All free apps.

Trial mode is optional. But anyway, here you go - if you have a hundred apps you want to distribute for free all you need to do is set up an optional price.
I'd imagine there'll be a (time?) limit to the trails.
It depends on the developer, MS don't dictate how and when the trial should expire or how it would limit functionality. So the point is - you can make an application that is fully functional in trial mode and doesn't have a time limit, yet has a price, which becomes optional. Kind of like a donation.
Good job vangrieg . Of course just to make sure they don't kill your app I would add something stupid that only the paid app gets. And/or you could just say that you'll give premium support to paid users.
Also, the beta program will almost certainly morph into an enterprise delivery program. The beta is timebombed but they haven't said how long that will be or how many users you can give the beta to.
greed
All this says is greed having all the apps only from one marketplace. The quality wont be better because your forced into buying from one store. Windows Phone7 will be hacked the moment it comes out.

They $99 a year maybe greed but the centralized app store is not. The average user doesn't want to have to look on the internet at multiple sites to find an app and hell most of them probably don't know you can do that. By having a centralized store you make it easier for the consumer to find what they need and by doing that you make it easier for the developers applications to be found as well. It's a win win without the application fee but for people like me with dreamspark I won't have to worrie about that
The $99 also keeps people from submitting crap apps and clogging up the works. I think it's as much about that as it is about the money. MS will be making most of it's money off their 30% cut and that's why they're only allowing 5 free apps.

Just because the app costs money doesn't mean it will be anything but a quick and easy attempt to take your money. Many of the best apps are free because the developers actually care about what the community wants.
Many websites are free and provide mobile apps for better access. I don't think they will bother if they have to pay.
best games are free
The best games made are free like xtracts and IBCM. Alot of paid games are crappy only a few good ones like assasins creed 3D,prince of persia, marbelz blast, and tetris.
The inability to develop free apps is what will drive me away from Windows Mobile over to Android. And it'll be a move I won't be happy to make.
This isn't really about free or paid, it's about how MS are making money.
The whole Marketplace system is so Microsoft can make money, and with paid applications they take 30%, so make a profit. With free applications, they still have to certify them, process them, and host them, but they make no money on that, so they have to cover costs.
Microsoft have said that advertising etc is fine within free apps, so you can still make money out of free applications should you desire it.
Yes, and also you can still submit five free applications, which is more than an average developer has.
Is there anyone here that is familiar with the website appbucket.net? From my understanding its like a membership you pay one time then you can get unlimited amounts of free and paid apps that are on the android marketplace. My only question was has anyone here used it and if so is it really worth it ?
It's an illegal site trying to profit off of pirating apps
^^^this.
Inb4threadlock
Sent from my blah blah blah blah
Any of those "Pay X amount for a year membership for unlimited apps" is a site dedicated to stealing apps from the market and re-selling them to make money, while taking it away from the devs.
Used to be android playground. They got in trouble and moved servers and isp.
I signed up for their mailing list a while ago to see if they would actually get taken down but they find ways around it. If an app is good I will support the dev and buy it as should anyone else.
doesn't sound legit to me. What it does sound like is a method for scammers to rob devs of their royalties. And/or a way to get you to download apps that have been tampered with (i.e. infected/trojaned).
Hello,
i could not find any up to date information about this topic around on the search, so i hope you can guide me in the right direction.
Is there a possibility for foreing developers, in my case from germany, to use proper advertising in xna-based games or in apps at all? The FAQ on msdn still states:
Can any developer participate?
Currently, only U.S.-based developers or international developers with a legal US
business entity with a US tax identification number is supported. Additional
international support coming soon.
So, i dont know what would be the best way for me to get into advertising? Waiting untill MS opens up the regulations? Using a third party advertising company? Getting a US tax identification number (i dont own a business) ?
What are youre experiences with this issue?
Greetings, Florian

Im using admob now... the payment per view is terribly low. I heard mobfox pays better but they only serve adds to europeans... so you have to do the backup with admob who serve the whole world with low payment adds. You could also set a minimum payment for the adds if they dont have any ads matching your requirements they wont get served and can be filled up with admob. But ads wont really pay however I think its too much of a hassle to send ms my tax papers and stuff so I wont charge for apps either.
Plus I dont really like how non US customers have less features and buggy phones so I dont feel like paying MS if they dont better the situation for us.
Hello all, I found something cool that I thought I'd share, mods please let me know if this is in wrong section etc, also I am in no way affiliated with the company...
So we always see online backup/storage with limits but I tripped across a service named Bitcasa that gives you unlimited, the catch? It costs money but it's worth it.
Promo Code: BETATHANKS makes it $50/year instead of $100/yr
Website: http://bitcasa.com/
Android App Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitcasa.android&feature=nav_result
Cool! Thanks for the sharing.
