Add/remove APK's from ROM ZIP - Desire General

Has anyone got a guide on how to remove/add APK's from a ROM ZIP file? I found a few roms but they have some stuff that i dont require.
Is it done by using themepro?

Bit of a pointless thread when I've already answered your question...should've waited for me before doing this!!

how is this pointless? i too would love to know how!!!!!!

It was pointless as I already answered the question in the ROM thread it was first put in. As I'm in work I couldn't reply instantly...
Basically:
Unzip ROM, remove APK(s) from /system/app, add APK(s) to /system/app (or /data/app if you want them to be removable), rezip ROM, flash it

thank you for your fast response. just one quick question... when zipping back up, do i just use "store" ?

No you can use medium compression for a rom.

I just rezip it using the stock Windows 'Compressed Folders' option - seems to work fine

thanks you for the replies

Or open the archive in the Winrar and delete / add files directly.

I have extracted the ZIP, removed a few apks and then rezipped it but i cant install the new rom.
I am doing it through Rom manager/clockworkmod but it fails to install. Anyone know what im doing wrong?

If I'm already running a ROM can I remove files from the zip file and flash the same ROM and by this way get rid of the unwanted apps? Or do I need to perform a wipe first?

you can just use adb to remove the .apk's no need to reflash

Don't know anything about that, so for me the easiest would be to flash the same ROM again. But will it work as I described it?

Sorry for digging such a old thread. For those who might be searching for the same reason, please note...
1. Removing the APKs from the ROM and Reflashing it won't make those Apps go Away from the Device. You need a Clean Wipe before and after the Flash. Sometimes you will need to Clear the Dalvik Cache as well.
2. Removing the APKs using ADB will not take out the APPs completely. You will also need to remove the corresponding .ODEX files if its Stock DEODEX files if otherwise.
3. In most cases, the editing the ROM typically requires you to Sign the ZIP file again. So you'd need the Manufacturer's Signing Key unless your device allows for unsigned ROMs.

just delete the app and flash, then see if everything is working

Tried deleting and reflashing

First, I am so new to this that noob is not a good title for me. I plan on learning all this, but for certain reasons, I need to get the Camera functionality off my HTC One M8. I figured that getting the software off would be easier and quicker than trying to disassemble the glue factory inside the phone. So I went to the unlockr to learn how. (Probably a mistake on my part.) According to him all I need to do is
2. In the app folder you will see all the .apk files for all the applications you have currently in the ROM. Simply delete the ones you do not want to remove them from the ROM.
3. To add applications, simply copy any .apk file for the applications you want to add into the app folder.
Then rebuild the ROM in Kitchen (99) and load it up. Now I have tried just removing camera.apk in Viper, InsertCoin, and Android Revolution. Everytime the ROM will not load, but the unmodified Viper, InsertCoin, and Android Revolution ROMs will load just fine. Should one of the files be edited? Or is there another way to disable the camera aside from tearing it apart. Any assistance while I try to learn this will be greatly appreciated.
As you can see, I have tried just deleting and reflashing, but the ROM won't install.

EddyOS, I dug up this post for several reasons. First you must have missed my noob comment regarding myself. Second, to stay on the good side of the xda moderators, I was reading all the please read before posting posts, which all say do a search first. The search dug up this post. Third everywhere I tried to post my question, the first thing that was mentioned on the forum was do not post questions here. Fourth, my mistake, I didn't realize I was on the HTC Desire forum, I take full responsibility for that. Fifth, I was just looking for help by getting pointed in the right direction in order to figure out how to fix my issue, and simply wanted to reply to a post on how to fix my problem that it didn't work for me. Obviously I now know it was the wrong platform and by your response, I take it that these two platforms will not have similar issues. Finally if I have offended your sense of what's right and wrong, I most sincerely apologize. I will confine myself to reading and not posting so as not to commit anymore faux pas.

Nand not fully unlocking?

I've done the nand unlock, 3 times in fact. It's working but i've got a weird bug. I have the fresh .2 rom installed and it comes with the newer wireless tether(2.0.2), but I want the one with WPA2(2.0.5 v2) in it so I downloaded it and installed it. It overwrote the one in memory, or so I thought until i rebooted and 2.0.2 came back. Did I do something wrong? I can write to system within android so I don't know.
i had issues with that ROM, trying to get adfree to work.
Silly question, but did you uninstall the prior version?
And, if you really like the ROM, maybe you could try to rm the version it has from /system/app (assuming that's where it's stored), and just push the newer version over.
Again, I'm not not positive about that. I was just going to wait for flipz to post a version that was fully compatible with the nand unlock.

[Q] Help with sprint lovers rom

Hi All, admitted newbie here. Sorry if this is misplaced, but I've searched and can't find the answer.
I've rooted my evo, dowloaded the all in one sprint lovers rom and installed it using rom manager. however, after install, i can find no signs of it being SL - no wifi tether app, no % battery indicator, no power control from pull-down window. from all outward appearances it is vanilla sense/froyo.
how do i verify exactly what installed? do i have to somehow seperately install/enable the SL features mentioned above?
help is appreciated..... thanks.
To check what you have just go to settings then at the bottom about phone, then software and look around it should say what rom you have
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
you don't flash it from rom manager.
name it to pc36img.zip EXACLTY and make sure it is on the root of the sdcard. save anything worth saving. then power off phone. then hold volume down and power, and you should see a white screen w/ skating droids. it'll ask if you want to updat.e hit folume up for yes. once it is done, it'll ask you if you want to reboot. also hit volume up for yes.
i'd reccomend you also try some roms like myns, mik's, koni's, and maybe some aosp cm7 action as well.
welcome to the root world.
any other quesitons, don't be afraid to ask.

Download Amon 2.3 for recovery you can also use this later to flash things and backups. Now place the sprint lovers rom in the root of sd card turn phone off.
Hold volume button down and hit the power button while holding down to get into bootloader it will then boot the pc36img.
Then when you get that all done remove it from your sd card and copy amon 2.3 pc36img over do the same thing. Then remove it from the sd card and bingo your set man. Easy as pie. Any more directions PM me.
First of all, thanks to those who have posted already - very much appreciated.
I think i found the problem (but not the solution yet) and it is very weird. After having problems getting sprint lovers loaded, I went ahead and tried cm7 using the version downloaded from rom manager. It installed and I've been using it a couple days. very nice.
However, I still wanted sprint lovers so I tried it again today. Downloaded the all in one fresh again to my mac so i was sure of the right file, moved it to my sd card root, verified it is there in finder, then did an install from sdcard using rom manager. it goes through the whole process and what do I get? CM7 again?!?
So... I think what was happening was that installing from sdcard in rom manager is resulting in the already existing rom being reinstalled. weird.
Further to this problem, if I manually boot into recovery and try to install from sdcard, I am able to see all the usual folders, etc. on the sdcard, but not the zip rom file. I can see the rom file when the phone is mounted to my mac and I can also see it when I use a file manager on the phone. However, in recovery, no dice. This is why I initially used rom manager to install as I wasn't seeing rom files when browsing in recovery.
Does anyone have a solution? I am totally confused as to why this is happening and its caused hours of confusion already. Is it a Mac file thing?? I kept installing Sprint Lovers and finding that there were no new features (about 3 times), which is why I originally made this posting.
Thanks in advance!

YOU CAN NOT USE ROM MANAGER TO INSTALL THE ALL IN ONE VERSION OF SPRINT LOVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The all in one version of sprint lovers must be installed from the boot loader not recovery. You copy sprint lovers PC36IMG.zip to the root of the sd card and enter the boot loader, then follow the instructions on the screen when it asks if you want to update.
If you insist on using ROM manager then you have to install the stand alone version of Sprint Lovers. This will require you to also install the updated radios unless you have already updated the radios.
PC36IMG.zip use bootloader, any other .zip is installed using recovery and rom manager uses recovery.

dude wtf.
srry but i told you how in my first post ^^^^^
sprintlovers is a ruu style flash, which is mostly unused. rom manager uses update.zips.
if you're going to ask a question, plz dont ignore a perfectly good answer.
i get where you might have gotten confused, because the rest of the people told you how to flash an update.zip rom, which won't work with sprintlovers. but you didn't even try mine, even though i gave you perfectly good instructions.
if you need help, dont be afraid to ask.

Sorry dk, no disrespect, I just didn't understand what you were telling me exactly. Please keep in mind there are a lot of moving parts to this with the roms, kernals, radio updates, etc. and whats obvious to you may not be to someone who just started. I actually did follow your directions yesterday once it sank in and Cruise replied to make it crystal clear and all is well now. SL is installed and working perfectly.

One question: Is there a rom like sprint lovers, but is stripped down and crap free? I don't like having to go back and delete everything and not know what i might step on that affects the phone later. I really liked cm7 a lot for the couple days I used it, but with gps being flaky (i know it is fixable) and some random lags and weirdness I got on certain apps, I am not sure if it is solid enough. I use this phone daily as my main business phone for all incoming and outgoing calls, so it has to be solid.
Thanks again.
I suggest that you download and install the Titanium Backup app. Whatever rom you decide to flash, you can use the aforementioned app to "freeze" an app you don't want. If you later find that you do want it or need it, you can always "defrost" it with Titanium Backup. As for what is safe to remove, see the following list:

Thanks Doug - very helpful.
However, am still interested if there is a clean, crap-free rom where you do not have to go through and delete so many items. Anyone know of one?
That will depend on your definition of "crap-free". If crap free means the removal of all Sprint apps then yes, most custom sense roms have them removed and stored in a special folder on your SD card in case you decide to install one or more of them later. Some people see the Sense overlay as crap. If you do, too, then there are numerous AOSP roms available. Salvage-Mod and CyanogenMod are just two of the more popular ones. There is even a sense-removal script floating around. Keep in mind, however, that the devs initially create their roms to suit their own tastes. They then alter their work to satisfy fans of their work as best as they can. Furthermore, what you consider crap may be a necessity to the next person. Know what I mean? Anyway, I hope I was helpful. Take care and enjoy the rest of your day....

Are you certain the file isn't named PC36IMG.zip.zip? Remove the .zip portion and try again, just in case. Also, are you certain the file is suppose to be flashed from the bootloader and not from within recovery? If you are and removing the .zip from the filename didn't work, redownload the file.

Yes i.m sure it is named PC36IMG.ZIP and when bootloader serch for it (wrong image) and i did download few times but with the same results , what else could it be? just in case i'm going to download it one more time
Again ( no image or wrong image ) WTF is wrong? now i noticed that when bootloader is searching or loading the image first says ( loading PC36DIAG.ZIP ) and then ( no image or wrong image ) and after that loads the PC36IMG.ZIP but again ( no image or wrong image )
yea dude it's named wrong. windows hides file extensions sometimes so it may be named pc36img.zip.zip but you just don't know it. try removing .zip then try again.

I am having the same issue.....keeps saying no image. I've made sure the file name is correct (only 1 extension) and it's sitting in the root of my sdcard. Any other ideas? Is the file case sensitive? Windows files usually aren't but I don't know what the bootloader is written in so not too sure. Please help as I've found the process up to this point to be pretty painless but didn't want something this small to hold me up.
Thanks a bunch!
Edit: I've also downloaded and tested the .zip several times (using WinRAR) and it seems ok. the file size is 225,430 KB.

Jedi Jelly/Unicef ROM keyboard?

Hi all,
Please forgive me if this question has already been asked, but I was wondering if there was a way for me to port the keyboard from the aforementioned ROMS to my phone (currently running cm10 stable) without flashing the ROMS. I'd love to flash these ROMS but for some odd reason, every time I flash anything other than stock or cm10 I end up with an echo. Any help regarding the keyboard question would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks,
tb786
Edit: Sorry for placing in the wrong section, should have looked over the forum a bit more
Could you backup the keyboard with Titanium Backup and then restore it to a different rom? Don't know if there'd be any compatibility issues, though.
download the ROM u want, and using a computer and winrar/any archuve program extract the apk for the keyboard. it'll be I. one of two folders, system/app/ or data/app/. then take the apk and simply copy it to your phone and install it
on another note there a few fixes around the forum for that echo issue, u may want to fool around with some of them when u get a chance

Thanks for the help, I'll try that out once I get home. Yeah, I've tried to resolve the echo issue last week and flashed all the radios and followed the return to stock guide to no avail. In my opinion, it seems to be a kernel issue, because as soon as I flashed a different kernel on the CM the echo came up. When I have some free time I'll keep tinkering with it, but for now, I'm just excited to get that keyboard haha. Thanks again.
All the best,
tb786
if its jelly bean ROMs ur talking about its a known issue with the leaked ROMs.
PS. if I helped hit thanks

Ok. Example: Say I take a .zip file that you have made for me and I download it. I boot into recovery mode and find the file and flash it, gives me the message that it has completed but when the phone reboots it's no where to be found. Did it not install or is there a place I need to look on my phone that it might be hidden?
just because its a zip file, doesnt mean it has the install routine baked into it..
As Twansky said, what is the file, and what is it for?

Ok. The files that I've tried would be mods for toggles, keyboards, and different add ons. For the most part, all of the files that I've flashed have worked. The ones that didn't work I'm not disappointed that they didn't, I was just wondering if possibly there was something or somewhere that I needed to look to see if they actually did but needed to activate per say. Could you explain what you mean by "install routine baked in" please. I'm a noob and learning everyday.
Thank you
some of those zip files, were probably just a bunch of individual files, zipped up to save room, and make them just 1 file insted of many..
a "flashable" zip file will have a few folders, one being meta.inf, another being system, along with some others...
post one of those zips that you are having a problem with here, and we will take a look at it..

Wase, let me see if I still have them on my phone. I know a couple that I tried were rom specific but one worked and one didn't. Those are the ones I expected not to work. Give me a minute to see what I still have.

This is one that didn't work that is for ROM XXDLL4. Another file that I downloaded is the glass dialer did work. What I guess I'm asking is, why would one work but not the other. I know these were fir that specific rom, I'm just confused on why one would work and not the other.

Sorry, I did not answer that part.
Boot into recovery>Find location where file was downloaded>Click to install>Confirm install>Install confirmed>Reboot.
I have tried wiping cache and not wiping cache.
Open up these "zips" and look inside..
yeah, it was a flashable zip..no idea why it wouldnt work, but, as you said, this is not a mod for our phone specifically, so that might be why..Just like anything else electronic, not every rom/mod/flashable file is going to work on every phone; thats just the way it is...

Exactly... use caution flashing "flashable" zips unless you know for a fact it accomodates your specific device. You need to look in the META-INF folder and review the updater-script. In there you will see specific BLKs (partitions) which are mounted/extracted/written/unmounted. Devices don't all use the exact same "/dev/block/mmcblk0xx" for /system or /data partitions. Some of these scripts are fairly universal but I've seen others which call specific devblock partitions.
Thank you everyone for the help on this. I finally got brave enough about a hour ago and flashed a custom rom fir the first time.
Thanks again for all the help and info.

[Solved] Files needed to fix phone (looking for "bootanimation" and others)

*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
SOLUTION FOUND, much thanks to @DocHoliday77
See here for "bootanimation", "bootsamsung", and "bootsamsungloop" files or bottom of this post.
I unziped and I copied "bootanimation" to /system/bin and changed the permissions, I only needed the "bootanimation" file, I had to change permissions to rwe-re-re, other combinations might work/be better. If someone needs to use the other two files, they go in /system/media
Again, credit to @DocHoliday77 for the files!

Hey everyone,
So, I tried changing my boot animation, and now I don't have any (it's just a black screen with the original sound)
(I'm on Candian Telus, with 4.4.2)
Basically what I'm asking/looking for is someone to attach a couple files off there phone so I can replace the ones that were altered through this tutorial, and hopefully get a boot animation back.
I'm not 100% sure if I need all of these, or if I may need more, but I have a pretty good idea of what was likely altered:
/system/bin/bootanimation (the extension-less file, this is one that I'm positive that got altered)
/system/bin/samsungani (possibly just and additon fr tutorial, unsure if needed. Information on if others have it would be awesome)
Any information on my situation would be amazing!
Have you tried factory reset (you'll lose data this way)?
Can you flash your ROM again (data will be wiped though)?

No, I haven't tried either. I'm trying to avoid losing any data, if possible.
Also, I'm not sure if it will fix the problem since the files have been altered directly. (I'm not sure if it will just reset with the file it has now or not)
Any thoughts?
Factory resetting won't help since boot animation is on /system.
If you can't find them here you can always copy them from a stock rom.
Make sure the binary file is from the same build as your current rom. It might not matter, but it just might.

Yeah, I'm really hoping someone is nice enough to copy and paste their bootanimation file in here, but I doubt it'll happen...
Any tips/ideas on how to go about copying from a stock rom? (I'm new to a lot of this stuff, so I'm unsure of how to go about this)
you can search on google and download boot animations.
but like doc said , ' make sure is from same build cause it might just matter. i DL cm 10.1 from internet and works great .
just a thought.

@mrrocketdog
It's not so much a boot animation itself that I'm having trouble with, but the actual system file called "bootanimation".
I believe when I tried to install a custom animation I/the files from a tutorial I was using altered it, and now it doesn't work whatsoever.
If you know of any boot animation tutorials/files that could fix this though that would be sick!
Either way thanks for the input!
You can try these if you like. I'm running Likewise rom right now, but they should work fine for you.

I love you. At first it didn't work but I changed some permission and now it's back to stock! Thank you sooo much!
Not to to add further trouble, but to prevent any future mishaps, could you point me in the right direction to getting a custom boot animation running?
maybe here..

if you use search a whole lot pops up.
good luck.

There should be a thread(s) in the Themes and Apps section. I wouldn't use any not confirmed or made for the S3 though. And I wouldn't mess with that binary file either. (Unless specifically told to do so in one of our threads.) Any we have here should work fine just using the actual animation files.
Some threads may also have a return to stock zip file you can flash in recovery.

think thats o.k. doc ? so maybe be REAL FREAKIN CAREFUL.

Alright guys, sounds like a plan. I'll make sure to be a whole lot more careful this time around! Thanks a bunch!

Are you referring to the one you linked to? To be perfectly honest I wouldn't try it. It was for the HTC One, right? I just don't know enough about HTC devices. It might be safe to use the animation, but it may just not work. (I doubt there'd be much danger of a hard brick though, but better safe....)

yup, thats the one. i forget sometimes : READ READ READ. thanks for double checking behind me. will be more careful in future. dont want to cause xtra problems !!!!!!
err on the side of kindness
No problem. It could be perfectly ok to use, but since I don't know, I consider it a higher risk is all. Another thing to consider is if it's dpi is different the images probably wouldn't display correctly.

@DocHoliday77
So after a while of researching I was thinking of downloading CyanogenMod, and the using that to do boot animation stuff, thoughts?
As long as it's from the S3 versions of cm, I believe it would be safe to try. Probably the worst that might occur would be no animation, like you already experienced. I don't use CM though, and don't really mess with the boot animation much to begin with, so it is possible it wouldn't work as expected, I'm just not sure on that. But it should be simple enough to get back to the stock animation with the files I posted before.

Yeah, I guess that's really the worse that could happen, I've made a backup of my stock ROM so I should be able to go back if needed. Again, thanks for all the help!
