Hi all,
I've just upgraded to the new HTC 7 Mozart on Orange and having a play around with the new WM7.
I'm finding quite a few teething problems and thought it would be best to start a troubleshooting thread to discuss the problems and potential solutions to them and that way this can act as a central hub for all queries as we get used to using the new OS!
1) Is it possible NOT to intergrate the FB contacts into People? I have too many FB friends and don't want them all in the People section, it's too big! Can't I pick and choose which ones I want?
2) Is there going to be an ActiveSync for WM7? How do I transfer all my contacts/calender appts from Outlook to the new phone?
3) I've connected the phone to my laptop and it's not recognising the phone. How can I access the memory and start transferring music etc?
These are just the first few problems I've been having and hoping that there might be solutions.
Thanks

1) There is a way, but I am not sure how as I do not have the phone.
2) There is no active sync, You need to get the outlook connector and link your outlook to your windows live.
3) You need the Zune Software installed, that is how you transfer pictures, music, videos, podcasts etc...

This was a problem before but I heard that you can set preferences with FB contacts and only get their updates, rest are ignored. I could be wrong but I don't use FB so not too sure.
2) Is there going to be an ActiveSync for WM7? How do I transfer all my contacts/calender appts from Outlook to the new phone? No, you can't sync with desktop Outlook if it is not connected to Exchange or associated with Windows Live account, aka in Cloud. Best you can do is install Outlook Live Connector and drag all contacts and calendar to the live account
3) I've connected the phone to my laptop and it's not recognising the phone. How can I access the memory and start transferring music etc? Use Zune software.
These are just the first few problems I've been having and hoping that there might be solutions.

Please see my replied in RED. Damn, Omega Ra got it before me.
also, it's not wm7
it's Windows Phone 7
Thanks for the responses. I can't find the option for the FB intergration and how NOT to sync the contact!
I'll try getting Outlook Live Connector and see if that works.
Apologies for the wrong abbreviation, I'll try and change the title of the thread.
Thanks
EDIT: Actually how do I change the title of the thread?
don't forget to post some feedback regarding the phone, i'm also planning to get this one i'm especially interested in widgets, if you find a nice on/off toggle for wi-fi that can be pinned to the start screen, share it please
Here's an interesting one for you (or maybe not!). I've heard from rumours across the interwebs that you cannot upload and use your own ringtone, is this true?
If so, I suspect I will have a lot of happy people at the office but I will be very unhappy!

This is a very worrying rumour! At the moment my laptop doesn't recognise the phone at all when I connect via USB.
Presumably the Zune software will allow you to move ringtones across? I'm at work at present so I don't know, but if that's not possible that's a huge backward step!!
Found out how to cut down on the number of Facebook contacts:
From the microsoft website
By default, all of your Facebook friends appear as contacts on your phone. If you have lots of Facebook friends showing up in your contacts list, you can choose to only show friends who are already contacts on your phone. (So, if a Facebook friend is also a contact in Windows Live or Google, their Facebook information will still show up in your contacts list. All other friends will be hidden from the list.)
1 From Start, flick left to the Applications list and then press Settings.
2 Press Applications and then press People.
3 Under Include Facebook friends as contacts, press Only add Facebook information to existing contacts to filter out Facebook friends who don't already have a contact card on your phone.
Note
This option only filters Facebook friends from your contacts list in People. It doesn't change whose social updates you'll see in What's new.
I'm not due to get my upgrade till next Wednesday, but had a theory on the ringtones situation.
Firstly, I'm assuming that you can see music stored (or at least all compatible sounds) on your phone when sellecting ringtones. Where all your music is on your laptop/desktop create a directory called ringtones and put all your ringtones there. Then sync with Zune and see if you can see it.
Probably not as easy as this but worth a try.
Kind of what I was thinking as well. My tone is actually a song so I'll just sync it....
however, my Dell doesn't arrive until the 9th so I'm sure you egg heads will crack it by then

Sweet!! Nice one
Hi guys, I received my HTC HD7 about an hour ago and been playing around with it. I ran into an issue with the wireless configuration and then starting looking for solutions on this forum. Wish I hadn't! =/ I just read some of the issues affecting WP7, and I am sooOOOooo hacked off. I feel like I bought a blimmin brick now. I "upgraded" from an HTC Desire. And boy is the Desire *SO* much better in features and configurability. I really didn't think that WP7 would be so bad.
So,.,. rant over, breathe in.... the issue I have is the following. My Wifi is configured with static IP's. I've disabled DHCP on the Wifi router and I would prefer to leave it that way because otherwise it will cause a great deal of issues, because I already have a number of machines on the Wifi network using static IP's and a firewall configured only to allow those specific source addresses out to the internet. So changing all that would be a bit of an issue.
In Android its perfectly possible to configure a static IP for a Wifi connection under the Advanced settings screen. WP7 doesn't appear to have understood this concept yet... I am really quite pissed off about this oversight!
Its proof yet again that Mad Microshot, in their quest to 'simplify' life for the 'normal' users decide to cripple the OS and hide or do away with advanced features. I just feel like punching whoever decided to take that 'decision' ... hmmmppfff...
Do you guys know any way around this?
Oh, and don't get me started on copy/paste or file downloads in IE... I can't even set the start page in I.E. How Draconic is that??!!
I hope I'm not getting the wrong end of the stick here as I don't get my HD7 till next week (starting to wonder if I should bother) I can't work out what you are going through. Sorry if I have misunderstood.
Regarding your WiFi... I have static IPs here at home and 5 PCs (plus PS3, printers, phones etc) and all the settings regarding the setting of the IP's I did on the router itself. When my gf's iPhone and my WM phone connected to the wireless network all they did was put in the pass key and they were connected. The router pushed forward the settings to the device. Was very little hassle.....Is this not the case with WP7?
You do realise that with DHCP you can set specific ip addresses to be handed out to specific MAC addresses, right? So you can enable DHCP and still keep all your devices' ip addresses static except the ones you want to leave as dynamic.
As Steve Jobs would say, "It's not that big of a deal". In fact, I do this at home - certain hardware like our daughter's laptop and our 4 wireless webcams all have hard-coded ip addresses and everything else is dynamic. Works like a charm.
Try it, you might like it.
Hi guys, sorry for the rant earlier... having a bad day today...
The reason I cannot use DHCP on my wireless router is quite obscure and specific to my setup here at home. I had actually forgotten about it until I tried just now to get around the problem. I'm using a T-mobile ADSL Router and Access Point from Germany as an Access Point only. I have a separate ADSL router and a proper firewall to secure the internet gateway. Some will probably think this is overkill but I work in Internet Security so I am sadly a bit paranoid by nature.
Now, my 'DSL' router from T-Mobile... its a bit of a weird one. It was a freebie and works a treat as Access Point and has loads of coverage... that's why I like using it. But it is useless as a DHCP server if it is not connected to a telephone line. Sounds complicated? It is!
Basically, I can get it to supply an IP address to a computer or the WP7 phone just fine, but it doesn't supply the crucial DNS server details. So I'm on the network but I cannot resolve any DNS names, so I might as well not have a wireless connection. So. I'm still pissed off. I understand that Apple don't do static IP's either on the IPhone, so I must be spoiled from the Android.... hohum.
There's only two solutions for this minor dilemma; Configure a static IP AND DNS on my HD7 or get another Wifi access point....... I think I know what I'll be buying next.........

yeah, go get yourself a cisco WAP. make your life a little easier lol.
Man after my own heart. Not overkill at all sir, in fact mine is probably very similar. Thomson ADSL modem, Watchgaurd hardware firewall and then the wireless access points by Linksys (changing them soon). Even have ftp and terminal server set up.
Most machines in the house have fixed IPs but some are just dynamic. Suppose I'll just have to wait till I get mine to see what problems I encounter

For number 2, I've downloaded Outlook Hotmail Connector. How do I use it?
Do I need to configure Hotmail in my Outlook and then start transferring the contacts/calendar appts?

Hey!
First post on the forums, this seems like a place where i might find the information i require regarding this, we will see.
Im looking for an MSN messenger application that wont disconnect my other clients that are logged into the same account. (My htpc, gamer pc and work pc are all running MSN simultaneously)
I have tried a few from the Market and they all log out my computer clients when i start them.
The reason i want this is because im only using wifi on my Desire, so whenever i move out of wifi coverage i loose my connection and suddenly im not available on MSN. I know there is offline messaging etc but thats another story..
Thanks for reading and please do let me know if there is any MSN app on market that will let me do this!
As far as I know, even advanced desktop unofficial clients as Pidgin doesn't support this feature, official msn for winMO also disconnects you.
This is only supported by official Microsoft desktop products, you won't find elsewhere than on XP/Vista/7/2008-server
I'd pay some good money for such feature.
Oh bugger
I guess this is one secret MS wont let go. Would be nice if others could use this functionality also tho..
I'm guessing (hoping?) that the current WP7 solution for transmitting stuff on and from the phone can not be the final concept. Its fine for now, as a workaround to send e.g. word and pdfs files per email onto your phone and vice versa, but forever? There must be a better solution.
I think the best solution is either through zune or through a dedicated folder plus mass storage mode.
An other program (and I include outlook) is a really bad idea in my opinion because users don't want to open more than one program to sync their phones.
Zune is a little bit awkward because its the dedicated Music/ Pictures/ Vids Part of your Phone. If everything would be synced through zune it would break with the separation that Microsoft build with the different hubs.
What do you think - where will Microsoft go with this topic? And does anybody know how Apple solved this with their iPhones?

The fastest way would be Zune and Bluetooth send/receive.
It's necessary to have it to stay with the platform.
Skydrive and Mesh is almost certainly where they're headed. I'd be extremely surprised if Zune ever supported Office file transfers.
The cloud, nothing is faster than the cloud.
Edit a file on your desktop and it updates on all devices.
Need to share a file? Just share the link.
Cloud synchronization will be the norm.
.....edit...
Jeffgeno beat me to it.
nothing is faster than cloud??? crazy.... upload to cloud and download to phone or upload direct from PC to phone.. which faster??? and safety??? upload confidential file to skydrive??? more crazy.....
We need a place to sync outlook files but aside from that what other files do you want on your device.... they're not necessary... I dont really wanna set up this whole cloud business
Cloud is great but in many scenarios IDIOTIC.
To put a doc on my phone I need 2 devices with connection - PC and phone. Sick!
And it's the first time I can't send anything by bluetooth to any other dumphone or phone without any data transfer. Sick too.
Right, let's just clear this up shall we?
Currently there are several methods of getting a file such as an Excel spreadsheet onto your phone.
1. Email it to yourself, then open and save the attachment on your phone.
2. Use the Live Mesh sync included with Windows Essentials to sync your excel files to Skydrive. Then navigate to your Skydrive on your phone and download the file(s) you need from there to your phone.
3. Download and run one of the many small free Webserver apps on your PC. then you can serve your files over your home network and download them to your phone just by browsing to your mini website.
I don't use 1, I tend to use 2 and occasionally 3 as some apps like 7Pass (a password manager) use web servers to obtain the (in this case a password) file from your PC.
The way forward will actually, IMHO be 2. But instead of navigating to your skydrive in a browser, it will become a native function, just like it is now with OneNote. The kind of instant two-way sync that OneNote has will be replicated for Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and possibly for any other types of file as well, which will hopefully allow any app to obtain its own filetype over Skydrive and indeed sync with it.
I'm optimistic this will happen in the update coming soon, but it might wait until the fall.

I think this is the best way to go and hope microsoft will do it like that sooner or later.
I understand that and it's a valid point.
I too would like to have the possibility to sync files _without_ having any network connection because sometimes there simply is no network or you're in a foreign country...So hopefully there will be a way microsoft makes this possible.
But besides of that, syncing over cloud is important for me at least as long as i am at home or something.
I use a combination of email, DropBox and Skydrive, I would love to have the ability to sync directly with Outlook since my company doesn't have Exchange or if they had a sync tool like Google that will update your calendar through the cloud.
On a side note how do you save a PDF that I emailed to myself? I tried to open and save as and it doesn't give me that option.

Er, if there's no network connection or you're in a foreign country, then you would just be using the locally cached copy of the file, until you either returned home or entered an area with coverage, at which point your phone would sync up.
The point is, your phone would be syncing on-the-fly whenever it could, and using local cache whenever it couldn't sync. Strikes me as the best of both worlds.

Okay, thanks for explaining. I didn't know that.
Well then it's good news. Except you will have to stop your phone from syncing when roaming. But i assume, that is possible? (couldnt test it out)
I'm not offended. I don't think no one else is either.
Its silly that they provide you with a cord for media, but that same cord is useless for one of the other touted features.

Your talking about from phone to PC right? I think MS should give an option to allow an adjustable amount of your phone's memory to be used for USB mass storage functionality. Like make a slide saying, Maybe I want 2GB available, or maybe 20mb. You know to copy file formats WP7 supports. Atleast for what you can't sync via Zune Desktop software.
I am about to make my first foray into an Android device (Motorola Defy - Android 2.1 on the Telstra network in Australia) after years and years of faithful Symbian servitude. There is one little thing that is bugging me about Android so I thought I'd ask the experts as I've spent hours looking for an answer and still not coming up with a clear answer.
I understand I can turn off contact and calendar sync with Google quite easily but I'm unable to find anything to suggest how hard/easy it would be to sync my contacts and calendar (via USB, Bluetooth or WiFi - no real preference) to my local computer running Linux, specifically Ubuntu, rather than the cloud. I would prefer it sync to Evolution as this is what I have been using for years now with various forms of SyncML and Symbian phones (most recently syncevolution).
I would really prefer not to give over my hundreds of contacts and all my personal appointments to the cloud so I'm searching for a solution that doesn't involve customising the basic software too much for preference. It doesn't have to be a 24/7 sync, I'm currently just running it on an as required basis. I would even be willing to pay for the service providing it works.
Now I understand the whole "don't buy an Android phone if you don't want to use Google's services" and I've seen many posts like mine deteriorate into "why do you even want this?" so bearing in mind I've considered these arguments already is there anyone with any constructive suggestions?
This...?
https://android-client.forge.funambol.org/
I was looking at this sort of thing but couldn't understand, would this require the installation of my own funambol server on the computer here or would just installing the client on the phone allow it then to talk SyncML to something like hxxp://syncevolution.org/ (unable to post outside links yet sorry for the crap link)? Sorry if it seems noobish but want to confirm before spending money on something that may/may not suit my needs.
I'm not sure as I don't use it myself. I mentioned it cause you mentioned you've been using SyncML in the past so I think it may help...
Thanks for the pointer. I'm trying to work out if
Handset+SyncML client -> Syncevolution -> Evolution
or
Handset+SyncML client -> SyncML Server -> Syncevolution -> Evolution
is going to end up being the case. I guess it's one of those "just get it and see" things it would appear. I was just hoping this could be confirmed either way beforehand because a SyncML server is going to be a fair bit of work for just one phone and one instance of evolution.
I'm looking to get the Motorola Defy in the next week or so, so I will make sure I report back how it goes if no one else has any other information beforehand.
Just a quick follow up for anyone else looking into this. If you have the time I would whole heartedly suggest setting up your own personal funambol server as I couldn't find a reasonable solution to my problem.
As I don't have the time at this point to do that I have used iCal Import/Export in conjunction with Touch Calendar (I dislike the layout of the default calendar and Touch lets me repeat an event every X days which is good for shift workers like myself) for my calendar needs. I have been using the inbuilt Motorola Phone Portal over wifi to import/export vcards into the phone for my contacts.
So now I have my contacts and calendar in the phone and can manually import/export which is as close as I've gotten to syncing locally at this point. If I figure out anything else I'll post back again and I'm still open to other suggestions that are a bit simpler than a separate funambol server.
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and to this site as well.
I just bought the Desire Z and it looks like a nice one
When configure the phone I found an interesting problem that I have no idea how to over come and need your help.
When I sync the phone with my exchange mail in the office it is sync only my inbox and not any other sub folders I created in my mail box, unless I'm going to each one of the sub folders and sync in manually.
In my older phone (Touch pro2) I use to get it done automatically.
Is any one can help me on this ?
Another small question is how I can activate the screen lock on this phone ?
Thanks for speedy answers and sorry if I post it wrongly.

Oren

screenlock is in the settings->security...
look in the "mail" settings. you have to select each folder then after that it will autosync. how many folders do you have?
I don't know if their latest HTC ROM update has changed this, but unfortunately the ROM my HTC Desire Z came with (1.34.405.5) can't synchronise other folders automatically. Whilst viewing email you can press menu and select other folders, but it'll download the email then, there's no way to make it do it automatically.
The stock Android email client (which the person above me is talking about) CAN synchronise other folders, but unless you're prepared to change ROMs (or at the very least root it and try and swap in the stock Android mail application) I don't think there's much of a solution.
However, a word of warning which might not make you want to bother, the synchronisation works differently to how it did on Windows Mobile (I previously had a Touch Pro2 as well!): On WM you could set a folder to sync, but only the Inbox would alert/notify, the other folders would just be there ready downloaded whenever you wanted them. However, the stock Android client will sync the extra folders AND alert you whenever new email arrives in them.
To me this was a pain in the neck because I have Exchange sending messages to some folders that I will read later/don't care about when they come in (information messages etc) so of course I have to unsync those folders now because it'll alert me if something goes into them, I only wanted them there ready downloaded for when I wanted to check.
On the plus side the stock app can also "hide" folders from view, but then it also can't move messages to another folder (which the HTC version can!)... If only the mail client had features from both...

Wow ! Thank you so much for such a post !
For me it is kind of a must have as I travel a lot and need to see the mails coming (by the way, on the TP2 there was a green number of mails near each sub folder) and not to sync manually about 25-30 sub folders .
will try to speak to HTC people - I will update of any new ideas

This issue has come up a few times now for IPhones, the way it's corrected with that is by setting the days to sync from the default 3days to no limit. It's not the best fix, as most of these people with this issue are dealing with exchange mailboxes around 5gb's (ceo's and regional managers), so it just eats into the phones space, but it works.
Possibly it will work for androids as well.
I have a tmobile g2, but I use google for mailhosting, exchange support isn't quite ready for any of the big 3 phones (BB iphone and android).

Thanks for this, So there is no answer even not in the market ?
Interesting !
i'm personally hating how exchange simply doesn't work on android, atleast on virtuous ROM for the desire z.
After almost 2 hours of telling it to create an exchange account on my phone and finally be able to create one, I run into a problem that it goes on a refresh spree and spams my notification with the one unread email that I have over and over again until i delete the damn account. I hope hotmail gets their crap together and support imap or atleast get their damn exchange server to work properly.

Checkout Touchdown in the market.....
Closest yet and you can choose which files to sync......
Hi Guys,
Heres a little warning for you all, I've just been caught out by this. Hopefully you can all avoid this trouble.
Basically my Skydrive account was suspended, which made my Omnia 7 (running Mango) almost useless.
Emails still worked, but contacts wouldn't update, Twitter wouldn't sync, I couldn't access ANYTHING stored on Skydrive. From the Phone or my PC's.
Even now that I've got my Skydrive account unlocked, something is still wrong, as new Skydrive files sometimes don't show up on the phone and contacts added/changed on the phone will show on the web, but not the other way round.
Why did this happen.....
I was at a party, had a few drinks and used my phone to take some 'stupid' photos of my mates doing some 'silly' things.
These photos were then automatically uploaded to Skydrive.
Where Skydrives automatic management system decided they were in contravention with the T&C's and insantly suspended my Skydrive account.
According the the T&C's link on the 'Blocking Page' you'll get a warning first, but I and a few others on the Live/Hotmail forums didn't.
The 'Blocking Page' also has a link to request assistants, but all you get is an automated response. Telling you you've broken the T&C's.
To make matters worse, the Mod's on the Windows Live Solution Centre do not have enough authority to help, so they send you to the same link thats on the 'Blocking Page'
Which gets you the very same automated response, telling you you've broken the T&C's.
It's taken me almost two weeks to get sorted out, but my account (the Primary account on my phone) still isn't working right. As noted above.
So Its a reset and start again with a new Live ID, which means changing the default ID's on both Zune and Xbox.
Hopefully you guys can learn from my mishap and avoid all this trouble.
was your skydrive settings set to private or me only?

I don't think it matters what your privacy settings are. You can't upload stuff that is against their terms of service.
I took quite a lot of nude photos of myself but my skydrive auto uploads is set to private. Havent gotten in trouble yet.
Don't sync your camera roll with SkyDrive.
Problem Solved.
Create a New Windows Live ID and factory Reset your phone.
Yea, it sucks, but if you want everything to work seamlessly that's what you're going to have to do.
If you have similar issues and want to get them resolved pretty quickly, try and contact @microsofthelps on twitter. Takes around 2 or 3 days at max until your account is unlocked again.
I guess calling them, would be faster, though.

When I faced the issue that my account was blocked, calling the hotline was no solution as they were not able to help me. At least not the german hotline. The guys on twitter DID resolve the problem though.
