[Q] WP7 hamstrung by Network Customisations? - Windows Phone 7 General

Anyone able to confirm what, if any, customisations the networks have made to the various WP7 phones?
I'm concerned about changes we can't remove and bloatware as will be using a PAYG sim card from GiffGaff so I need either an unbranded phone or last resort locked to O2 (as will still work on Giffgaff).
Now that many have been released (in the UK at least) be great to hear from XDA members with first hand experience rather than the fairly poor and detail-free reviews I have been reading last few days.

I've just bought the HTC Mozart on Orange. The installed apps can be unpinned, and the theme changed from orange's colours back to Blue.
I did also manage to get the SIM unlock code from mobileunlocked.co.uk which worked perfectly, and let me use a SIM from another operator.
HOWEVER, there is nothing I can find on the phone to change the APN settings, therefore mobile data is not working.
Anyone found a way to get around this?

Think you might well be the first person to ever need to do it
But as said, operator customisations are minimal and easily removed. The only bit of branding you might be left with would be an operator logo on the casing.

Actually, that is the best part of Windows Phone 7 - it NOT allows any customization except some additional stand-alone hub/apps. No more totally ruined experience from OEMs' or carriers' crapware.

There are various levels of customizations depending on network, but I've not come across any yet that cannot be unpinned from the home screen or completely uninstalled (long-press the app in the application list, choose uninstall).
The apps will be reinstalled if doing a hard reset but other than that they are completely removable.

Thats really good as there have been a lot of different carriers that stick their rubbish (and I mean rubbish) applications onto phones, and no one uses them.

I heard someone mention on another forum that O2 have messed with the search button in the browser? Anyone know anything about that?

According the Techradar:
Choose Settings > mobile network > Add APN
Let us know if that worked, as worried it might not be available in some devices 'locked' to a network.

Found another review that states O2 have messed with the browser:
"Others will revel in the space given over for exploring websites with Microsoft’s efficient new Internet Explorer browser (even if O2 have locked the default search in IE to Yahoo!)."

@Pocket-Lint
I thought people said Microsoft would not allow customisations like this?

yes, this works!

Market Enabler changing APN:s

So, today I discovered that running Market Enabler actually changes my APN:s in Menu->Settings->Wireless->Mobile Network. I chose German O2 as my "fake provider". I assume this is the way Market Enabler works..?
I just installed Modaco's ROM, so I no longer have my own provider's "stock apn:s" installed. (I'm from Finland).
What's odd is, that Mobile data over HSDPA still works. So am I now surfing somehow through o2:s network? Web pages load really snappy and unfortunately I can't recall what my settings were earlier today (when I was using the stock rom and market enabler).
I must admit to not knowing exactly how roaming works. If I were German and came to Finland and used my mobile data settings from Germany over here, I would certainly be roaming. But now I am in Finland, faking that I'm from Germany (to get to paid apps on Android Market) and somehow, mobile data works. I checked, and I only have those two O2 -apn:s enabled...
If anyone can shed any light on this matter, I'd be happy to hear it.
Hi,
what I did (also in Finland) after having used Market Enabled and chosen O2 Germany, was to go to Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile network settings -> Network operators -> Search networks, and selected my real network provider (Select automatically option might work too). Then it asked my SIM PIN, and after a while I could see that the APN settings were back to normal, real values.
jayjay: I don't think you're actually using O2's network. I found this out today as well and wanted to start a thread but found this .
Anyway, I'm using Amon_RA's ROM, and have to manually enter the APNs as well. After using Market Enabler, I realised my APN list disappeared (is empty), but I'm still able to surf the net, MMS and all. At that time it didn't cross my mind that Market Enabler was causing it, I thought it was some Android bug, so I decided to reset the APN settings to defaults. Then I got o2 on the list as well. (I set it to o2 as well).
I figured it must be due to the apn-confs.xml. Since apn-confs.xml has no setting for my provider (StarHub, Singapore), it somehow became empty when I used Market Enabler to set it o2. However, when I resetted to defaults while I'm still "acting" as o2, it pulled the apn setting from the apn-confs.xml.
That's just a guess though but I'm quite sure about it. Hopefully the developers of MarketEnabler can let us know ^^.
Thanks for the replies! Yeah, I am also certain this will in no way affect my bill. I just had some problems, since I hadn't put in my MMS apn yet and had ran Market Enabler. This made me see two different APN:s from O2 Germany and I was unsure of how to get my one Finnish apn back and how I'd be able to put in the missing MMS one.
I just booted once, saw my "normal" single apn, added the missing MMS one, verified MMS was working and then ran Market Enabler. That hid away my real apn:s, but since they are both working, it's all good.
I really couldn't envision living without the paid apps - I think half of the ones I have are paid apps from the market and they feel so affordable after having paid a bit more for iPhone apps for a long time...

Please see http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/issues/detail?id=13
Anyway, all changes made from market enabler will be cleared after a reboot or even if you get into roaming.
rac2030: Thanks for the reply! I started the issue .
Additionally here is a longer description about how the market enabler works:

btw. I just updated MarketEnabler to v.3.0.3 and fixed issue #11
I'm not sure but maybe it helps with the APN issue too ;-)

[Q] Cricket Wireless revisited: Cricket Android Plan

Greetings.
For the longest, i've been trying to get the full cricket service working under xdandroid, CM6, etc, on the RAPH800 phone using various methods posted in this forum, ppcgeeks, connect-utb, and other blogs... to no avail. The best was talk/sms, and using the web browser, access the web via the data line.
and then i found this: cricket wireless has a "new" android plan that will work for their android phones.
Has anyone using cricket and a flashed/haret'ed android os subscribed to the "android plan ($55)" and got the full cricket wireless services working?
(talk, text, mms, email, market, data, etc.)
The RAPH800 isn't an Android device, so the Android-specific plans don't apply.
For example, Sprint & VZW charge extra (you must have a certain teir plan) to get an Android device. Heck I've heard SERO members on Sprint outright cannot purchase an Android device without giving up SERO entirely.
So the trick is probably related to the Cricket proxy - have you tried setting it up...?
Sorry, double post.

Yes. And in the APN settings, i am able to browse the web, but not log onto the google account nor visit the Market.
i even tried the u2nl and autostart.sh solution to no avail.
My guess would be: subscribe to the "android plan" and then apply those solutions... but the plan is beyond my budget for the time being.

I would recommend against that - you could end up applying for a plan that could potentially cause issues with your device (probably not, but you never know...)
At best you'd end up paying more money and since you don't have an actual Android phone not be able to reap the benefits of having an actual Android phone...
Is there a global place to adjust proxy settings? Perhaps Cricket sees the market traffic and outright blocks it... that is a shame if that's the case. Personally, I wouldn't pony up for an Android plan unless I was running an Android phone...
It's kinda a stupid workaround, but can you access the market and google services thru wifi?

The only obvious place is through the APN Settings
sure, one can hack into the files relating to networking (since it is linux-based)... but any changes via GUI would over-write the files. (anyone wanna confirm this claim? )
Perhaps there's an app in the Marketplace dealing with proxies... (anyone wanna recommend one? )

i get the same response from the other related forums... including the word "Perhaps" ... but no hard evidence.
Is there a way to determine if this is really true using the android debugger, or some other tools?

I would imagine if you could run a netstat command while trying to access said services, and if you get any SYN_SENT's... then it's pretty certain that it is being blocked.
I could also be barking up the wrong tree, that's just how I would probably figure it out if it was a computer
The easiest way is have a dealer add your TP to the account as the Zio then change it to the 60z "$55 Android plan" refresh the features.
Then for the setting on the phone:
Using CDMA WS or the likes write the NV files from whiterabbit.org set the EVDO passwords, double check all the epst setting, then check your data connection in WM. If it's working in WM flash the Android ROM of your liking, waite for the 3g or H icon to appear and you will have a fully flashed Android TP. Also note you will need an updated PRL, most are using 32100.
I am proof it is working, I have it running on a Touch and plan to load it on the wifes TP this weekend.

Thanks for affirming it works... for the Touch.
However, from the sites observed, the Touch Pro does not have the NAND option working, and we're stuck with using the Haret method instead... unless i'm mistaken.
With Haret, is it the same proceedure as you've outlined above, or is there another?
I wouldn't see the point of paying extra for something that's only usuable part-time...
I had too many call-related issues to be running Android full-time.

If you had a WM device on the Android plan it's going to open the access up. You will get full use of POP email, apps that you may not now.

Yes but IMHO it would only make sense to pay extra for something that you can use. Not that Android is completely unusable, it's just not usable as a full-time OS.

Missing Features In Mango

Hey
So i updated my non carrier locked HD7 that had not been hacked nor touched in anyway using the disconnecting the internet method. Everything went according to plan and i now have Mango.
Although seem to be missing a few features, i knew HTC was meant to include attentive Phone in there built but it is no where to be seen also there is no music search in bing. When updating it said the update was for HTC so i think its the right one.
I assume the music search is a region thing as i live in Australia but im not sure about attentive phone. I just hope i do not have the AT&T build rather then a carrier unlocked one.
OS version 7.10.7720.68
Firmware Revision Number 2250.21.40502.401
Any help or advice would be great, perhaps a restore is needed ?
Update
Big vision does not seem to work for QR codes bar codes or looking at books it just comes up with could not find.
In settings - regions and language, change search language to USA. This will enable full Bing Vision. Result will be for US though.

In Australia, only QR codes and MS Tags work, as there is no local store information yet (ie, the whole point of scanning books/movies/barcordes).

Yes. Not straight away though. The Attentive Phone app had to update itself, along with a few others once it realised I was on Mango.

Yes, it took 6 hours before i got an update notification for attentive phone (amongst others) I guess it has something to do with how often the phone checks back with marketplace to look for updates
No voice guidance in UK!
Seeing as this is a missing features thread, where the flip is the voice guidance within Bing Maps for the UK?
The damned thing still doesn't play m4p podcasts properly, even when subscribing to them in Zune. When the files have embedded objects like links etc., they open in the video player which doesn't work in background or under locked screen.
I removed Attentive Phone from my phone and i cant put it back on in the market place and it does not appear in settings like it was eluded it would be.
I had the same issues. It was available through the HTC Hub though and I was able to download and install it.

No, I mean something that works better than a fast switch, and better than THIS fast switch. We have repeated instances of system applications, like 3 messagings, one setting and one WiFi (the wifi settings).
Also, you cant resume the instance when opening a toast notification. Which sucks. They expect that when you receive a toast from, I dont know, WhatsApp, you instead of opening the notification, you hold back button and switch to the App. Brilliant.
If not this flaw, the OS would be perfect for me.

[Q] Help: Marketplace has lost my Nokia and Orange apps

I have had my Lumia 900 UK model for 2 days now (this is my 2nd handset) and have had the same problem appear on this one as I had on the 1st. I returned the first for a different problem though.
This issue is that the Nokia Collection and Orange Selection menus have disappeared from my Marketplace and I cannot install any of the Nokia App (ie CNN or EPSN) or Orange App which I could install when those options were there.
This started yesterday when I put a T-Mobile pre-pay/PAYG sim in the handset in an attempt to activate a 1-year free internet offer (different story altogether). When I put the Orange sim back, the marketplace no longer had the 'Orange Selection' available. The Nokia collection was still there.
So, last night I though I'd try a phone reset and see if that fixed it. It was a 1 day old phone so I was only really wiping 5 text messages. However, after the reset I lost the Nokia apps from the marketplace too. I reset again and still no change. I've used the ReInstaller app to get everything back on my phone, BUT any of the Nokia or Orange apps refuse to install, with the 'this app is not for your handset' message displayed on the marketplace page for the app.
So, I'm hoping this has been a regular problem for which the XDA collective have a solution for. Please help.
I'll post the same on the Lumia 800 forum and that device has been here in UK for months and may have more readers, but any help from 900 owners is hugely appreciated.
Thanks,
DC
This is happening to a few people. I think it has to do with the backend changes on the server going on by both Microsoft and Nokia. My girl lost her Nokia apps for about 2 weeks before they randomly reappeared. Over on the WPCentral forums somebody posted a fix, though I never tried it. They said to go into the XBLive hub, go into the marketplace from there, browse around, go back out, and it supposedly fixes it. I've never tried and you can go over there to see if I missed any steps.
Embarrasingly, a simple sync with my PC and Zune has fixed this.
Thanks.

something to keep in mind. The marketplace is divided into multiple parts. No, I'm not talking about apps, games, music. I'm talking about storefronts. You have a few...first, the windows phone marketplace...the base model. Then you have the oem model...for the nokia's and samsungs of the world. Then the carrier marketplace, for the oranges and ATT's of the world. Not every oem or carrier has a storefront.
My guess is the swapping of seems impacted the activation sequence, disrupting the population of the acceptable combinations of marketplaces.
Many people have noticed the lumia seems to have many situations where response appears slightly delayed. Activation is one of them. Most likely the correct combination of marketplaces would have appeared anywhere from a few hours, to a few days, as mentioned above. When connecting to the PC and Zune, you simply synced with hard wired drivers that reached to the low level bootloaders to recognize the who and what of the device. This is the same sequence used when checking for updates. Eventually it would have occurred at the ota level too...during whatever the WP recheck sequence currently is.

[Q] unable to load marketplace after market select

i seem to have a little problem.
after selecting a different marketplace and region, rebooted as instructed. i went to download some stuff only to find that the marketplace will not load.
the screen says.....loading then back flips back to menu.
tried restoring with back-up for both (Restore OEM and Restore MO) but still nothing.
marketplace will not load.
also cannot open xbox games... starts by saying loading then flips back to menu
tried soft reset but still nothing
currently running mi7Rom WP7.8 Edition Nokia Mod v2 on omnia7
any help would be appreciated
p.s when i look online at my phone details it comes up as samsung cetus!!!
i would rather not load the rom again if i can find a solution
I had this its todo with changing OEM AND MO device details the problem is it gets all screwed up when certs get synced, changing back the reg settings doesn't work, there are literally 100s of XML files that also contain various stings, I thin the problem lies in them. I for it working but in the absence of time, formatting was the best solution

thanks for the reply. i was hoping not to have to reformat quite yet.... ball ache.
probably wait for an official/unofficial 7.8
Yeah, some of the marketplace hacks use a known-to-be-harmful hack. The reputable ones shouldn't - this issue was discovered well over a year ago - but to some people the allure of being able to run Nokia apps on their non-Nokia phones is too great. Installing the apps can be done without this hack (which is to change the OEM and phone info in the DeviceTargetingInfo registry key), but running them often cannot.
The only known solution is to hard-reset, or to restore a full phone backup that was taken prior to using the hack.
tbh GoodDayToDie i chose what i thought was a reputable app to do this from.
i used market select by sh4d0w86. oh well, you live and learn.
i wasn't trying to get nokia apps >.< the app i wanted was iheartradio which has never been available in my region.
i will be reformatting soon. let this be a lesson to me
GDTD, yeah ive never used the apps and applied the modifications myself, I suspect its actually to do with the Mobile operator settings, and not exclusively the device or OEM settings, ive been fiddling with the others in an attempt to recreate the problem, it appears random but that Mobile operator reg entry, so far, appears to expedite the problems.
