Hi Guys.
Not sure if this is the right section to post under, so apology in advance if its wrong.
I was wondering if i could make my verizon number a google voice number. Like, release the number from verizon and get google to put it under my google voice account. That would mean that all my current contacts would become google voice contacts. The main advantage for me of this, is that i'd get missed call alerts even when i am in an area without cell phgone reception (ie work) through wifi.
Any advice appreciated.
if you use wifi from your work you shouldn't be missing any calls. If you are you should return the phone....

This is absolutely FALSE. cell reception has absolutely NOTHING to do with WiFi

You can assign your Verizon number as the one that google voice forwards the call to; but dont think you can re-assign your VZW number to google voice.
Also, you can set your vzw number to forward to Google voice for voicemail. Then, whenever someone calls and gets to your voicemail.. you should receive the missed call notification.
When you're phone doesn't have signal, the call should go to Google voicemail immediately and count as a missed call.

This is the explanation of how wifi will help.. The phone doesn't ring, You don't get to answer the call, but wifi lets you know you have a missed call our new voicemail.

Hey everyone...so I've read that it is possible to set up Google Voice for my carrier's visual voicemail. I tried doing it by going to google.com/voice, logging in, adding my carrier's number, and activating it, but when I go to the Voice app, it says my carrier isn't set up to use Google Voicemail or something along those lines.
I'm hoping there's someone with an EVO who uses Google Voice to display voicemail for primary/carrier number. If someone knows how to do it, please tell me how you set it up! Thanks
The talk app can't do it automatically. Go to Google.com/voice. There is a spot in the settings for voicemail that tells you what to dial to setup conditional call forwarding on Sprint.

I received that message too. Like, jabba said, you just activate your number through google voice. They'll give you a number to dial into the key pad that starts with a *xxxxxxxxxxx. When you click "call" you'll hear a couple beeps then the call disconnects after 3 seconds.
Also, you might have to go into the phones voicemail settings (through the voice mail widget) and set it to google voice (instead of carrier VM).
I did this today and tested it out. Works perfectly.
Is there any way to reduce the number of rings before VM pickup when using the conditional forwarding to google voice? I had it set up for a while but it took so long to pick up that I switched it back to the sprint visual vm.
One cannot alter the number of rings
before voicemail hits on Sprint's network. This is a carrier setting.

I also read about this that some people were NOT receiving calls and it would go straight to voicemail. Has this been the case with any of you?

Is anyone else having issues with call waiting not working when using google voicemail? I like the features of google voice but this is a deal breaker. I noticed that the call waiting feature is not working at all on my sprint # and every time it is going directly to voicemail, I assume this has to be because of google voice is configured to be my default voicemail?
Is there any solution to this problem besides going back to sprint vvm?
So all the people who are using google vm are fine with losing call waiting? And CM recommends google vm and boasts how it is far superior to to sprint voicemail even though we lose a major feature like this?

Yea I'm getting all those features as well, like I said everything works great except call waiting. But I'm gonna try nebenezer's suggestion and hope for the best.
You know what else doesn't work with Google Voice is "Decline" because if you decline a call it goes straight to Sprint Voicemail. The call never gets forwarded. Deal breaker for me.

hmm, I didn't realize that.
One thing that does bug me too is that caller-id-blocked numbers don't make it to GVoice either.
My work line shows as 000-000-0000 on caller id. I have tested this on a wide variety of phones and gvoice settings and never have I been able to leave myself a vm from my work line.

Well that sucks, back to Sprint VVM for me then.
Hopefully this is something that Google can even fix and isn't a limitation due to Sprint's network or hardware in some way.

FWIW, I just tested this a couple times with a friend at work, no problems here. Maybe that was another conflict with Sprint's voicemail service?
He called my phone from his, I declined the call, he left a voicemail..
If you want to make sure that voice mails go to google voice, turn on Call Screening. That way if you don't answer, decline or you miss the call, you google voice picks up the message. You may get a voicemail message in your sprint voicemail box, but it will only have the message "press 1 if you want to accept this call"
So with this method you don't have to forward calls at all.

If I don’t have 3g or data is it going to come through? Or does it work just like stock and not on google voice? A few people have called and i never received the call, was it google voice? or would i have had the same issue without it? Do i need a data connection to receive calls now that i am going through google voice? I honestly just wanted it for visual voicemail, but i do enjoy the texts being online but i cant afford to miss calls because they dont come through. I do have call screening off as well.

All calls go through your cell connection (no data), but depending on your setup, texts and voicemail use data. The routing center was having issues last week due to Sandy in NYC so that could be why you had issues, but there could be other issues. You should try some testing by calling yourself to see how calling works and what sort of delay you may experience. I find that I often miss calls due to poor reception, but my gmail rings right away, it's the cell portion that can take several rings or miss the call completely.

Make sure you go onto a PC or Mac and type "Google voice" into address bar. Sign in and adjust setting accordingly. The settings on the PC end are the "full control" settings as your limited to what you can change through the phone application.
Good luck and don't fret, Google voice is a great program that I use daily.
Riding the Uni on the GSIII
Friends,
I use google as my main phone number and forward it to my t-mobile number for incoming calls. To avoid confusions with changing phones, numbers I keep my google number static so that I don't need to let everyone know that I have a new number.
How can I make calls out using my google # so that people will always see that number and not t-mobile? At current, I block my t-mobile from caller id, but sometimes it can be hassle or make people nervous.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I thought that using the Google Voice app would give you the option when making calls to "Use Google Voice for every call, Don't use Google Voice to make calls, or Ask me each time." If I remember right, when you use the Google Voice app to place calls, the service calls you first. Once you answer, it then places an outbound call showing your GV number.
GrooveIP works purely over data (WiFi, mobile data) and definitely uses your GV number.

thank you.. i will definitely try this... if memory serves me right and if it is like the computer. google calls you and then places the call. i would imagine it would be the same format.

I am going to try GV Phone, the other app I didn't see anywhere to make calls, only initiate text messing. You then could select the recipient to call. So we shall see how this works..

I have Google Voice set to make calls. The settings are
Making Calls
Ask every time I make a call.
When I make a call, instead of getting a pop-up asking me if I want to use Voice to make the call, the call is started and I can hear the call ringing, but under the dialer screen, is the Voice pop-up.
If I immediately hang up the call, then switch to the Voice pop-up, I can make the call with Voice.
That isn't how it should work. When you make the call, the pop-up should appear but no call should happen until you select use voice or phone. That is the way it works on a S3 with 4.4.2.
Any suggestions?

I can get it to work it just isn't clean.
What is not working for you?
Same here no matter if I choose Google voice to dial and always ask, it always call from my cell carrier not thru my Google voice number.
On the 2.18 update, google hangouts dialer doesn't work. It dials 0 instead of 1 so it redirects to a different country.

I checked mine. That has same issue. It only dial from network carrier not from GV
