Hello.
I realize that this is probably not the place to ask this question, but I am in need of serious help.
Is there any software kit which would let you test your HTC Desire hardware for hardware faults?
The reason for this is that my Desire is not charging neither through the AC charger nor the USB charger, and I need my phone BADLY.
I have tried a hard reboot, battery stat erase (through recovery, thus I have rooted my phone and voided the warranty), factory erase, and 'charging' the phone whilst the phone is turned off.
I have to say that when the phone is in charge, the battery doesn't go up, no goes down, and it stays on the same level (for now its on 27%).
I am quite scared to run it to 0% and not being able to boot the phone up at all.
Anyone can help/ideas?
Much appreciated.

Have you tried a different usb cable? It's possible yours is broken

Check Z-Device Test in market. It tells what component is working and what is not
I had a similar problem the other day when I flashed one of them new fangled kernels, it was stuck on 62% after 8 hours of charging, re-flashed the standard kernel and thankfully things went back to normal..
so I was just wondering if you had flashed a new kernel recently?
Are you using the original charger? Maybe its slow charging (USB).
maybe your battery is faulty. Try a new battery.
Hey all.
Thanks for the replies.
@beanbean50 no, I am using LeeDroid's 2.2a kernel with UC-OC, and it was fine for a few days.
@venkig I just tried Z-Device, and it reports that everything is healthy!
I am using one replacement cable. After trying the same cable on my mates phone, it seems that the resistance of the new cable is much higher, thus less current can go through. So for me to charge the phone to 100% -whilst the phone was off- took around 15hrs!
I've ordered a new cable from hTC, and waiting to see if that fixes the problem.
Thank you all for the replies and help.

Hi there
Had the overheating problem. Unrooted, S-ON, Stock Hboot restored, sent it back. Mainboard replaced. Received back 'fixed' within 4 days. Excellent service. Stock Froyo back. Rooted using Revolutionary and InsertCoin reinstalled. Backup restored. Everything's great.
Come the evening, plug the phone in to charge. Orange LED comes on, as normal. However, the battery level seems to decrease.
Wipe battery stats.
Battery level increases, temporarily. Further investigations seem to indicate that USB charging is ok (incredibly slow, but does increase battery level) whereas AC charging doesn't work at all. The orange LED does come on and the lightening bolt is visible inside the battery widget but the level only goes down (as you'd expect if it wasn't plugged in).
Tried updating to the latest version (okay so I got InsertCoin 1.1.3, loved it so stuck with it) i.e. 1.1.4 with a new kernel. No joy.
So what's going on? Is it a software problem (is this possible?) or have HTC forgotten to plug a connection (again is this possible, as the phone charges via USB but not AC?!)?
The battery is fine (charged it in another Desire with my charger which, thus, must also be fine).
Either way any help would be much appreciated. I really don't want to have to send my phone back, again but if this is the only solution, obviously this is what I'll do.
Apologies if I've missed this problem in the threads, I've tried to find it but no joy.
Further info
Ok so I've been charging the phone overnight. Nothing happened (it went from 45% to 35%)(this was via USB).
I've now wiped the battery stats in recovery and it now charges (again only via USB).
I'm not going to send it back until next week so if anyone has any ideas before then, feel free to share.
Thanks
Maybe its the usb slot on your phone thats faulty, could of happened while it was away being fixed.

It could well be. The phone won't charge at all now, via USB or AC. I've organized for it to be 'repaired' again on Tuesday so hopefully it'll be sorted by Friday. It's a good job I have a spare battery and battery charger.
Thanks for your reply
Bit annoying tho coz ul have to put it back too stock (again) lol

Incredibly annoying. Hopefully it'll all go as smoothly as last time.
I'll report back next week when I get my phone back...
As long as it gets fixed thats the main thing.

Ok so I've got the phone back. They have stated there was no hardware issue and the phone charged fine with their battery and charger. So, still unrooted, I connect my phone up to a charger.
It begins to charge! Excellent.
S-OFF, flash Superuser, flash Insertcoin, restore backup. Problem returns?! Honestly, I can't believe it. Does anyone know how this could possibly be a software issue?
I'm running Insertcoin stable v1.1.4 with snq's most up-to-date kernel (for insertcoin) 2.6.35.8 -snq111118.
If anyone knows anything I can try just let me know. I'm totally stumped here.
Thanks in advance

Further Update
Further investigations (mainly trial and error) have resulted in the phone being able to charge via USB only (when the phone was unrooted, my claim of it being able to charge was actually it charging via USB).
I've tried also 3 different kernel's for my InsertCoin (all snq) but nothing has changed (I didn't expect it to, however I assumed if it is a software problem, it's the kernel).
So my phone is currently connected to the PC to charge. Obviously this isn't ideal.
As HTC claim there is no hardware issue (would they test the charge from AC and USB?) I'm reluctant to send it back. Again.
However, as the phone does not charge via AC even when it's off, it still makes me think there is a hardware issue.
Any suggestions as to what I can do would be most appreciated. Thanks
Did you try to put it back to stock and then charge it with ac charger? Or maybe your charger/ cable is broken? Did you already try another one? If that works, you shouldn't send it in again. If it didn't, blame HTC for not trying the wall charger.
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire
No I'm going to try that tonight. I have tried a friend's battery and charger and nothing (but my battery does charge via AC in his phone) so I'm still inclined to believe it's a hardware issue.
What if it does charge through AC when unrooted? What could possibly be wrong?! We'll see, I guess...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
So I unrooted the phone (used the GB update). It didn't charge via AC but did via USB. So I've sent it back (Monday) and have yet to hear when I'll be getting it back (when I sent the phone in first time, they replaced the mainboard and had it back to me within the working week).
Ah well, I just hope it's fixed this time. Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'll let you know what happens. I'm assuming they're just going to replace the mainboard to be honest. I can't see this going any other way (well I can, but I shudder to think what I'm going to do if they say nothing's wrong. Again.)
It's back!
I've just received the phone with a note that says "fully refurbished with new mainboard replacement".
Being confused by what exactly this meant I contacted HTC and low and behold they've replaced: the mainboard (I got this much), the power button, the volume buttons, the touch panel and the bezel. This list reads to me like: we've replaced the phone.
I've hooked it up to charge via AC and in 14 minutes, wait for it...
The phone IS charging! Can't say I'm hugely surprised at the fact that it was a hardware issue, but given the rigmarole I'm just happy it's fixed.
Once I've got it home and rooted it tonight, it'll be like a brand new phone. That's fully customised the way I like it. Can't wait.
Thanks all for suggestions, turns out 3 times is the charm...
So I'm currently using the Suarom ROM, and for the most part it's been working fine. Suddenly I have a problem. Last night I plug my phone in to charge and suddenly it won't charge. I tried with two separate chargers.
It's still a new phone, so I can bring it in for warranty work. I just want to make sure I take all the steps necessary to "un void" the warranty. I'm a Rogers customer. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
Theres a thread in the DEV section that provides instructions of how to completely un-root and restore your device to factory before you turn it in for services.
The only problem is, my battery is at ten percent with no way to charge. The strange thing is that when I plug the phone in, the charging symbol appears. Just doesn't charge. Any idea why that would be ?

Tried different chargers? maybe plug it up to your PC see if you can get some juice that way? i can see the cable/charger going bad before the usb port on the phone ( but **** happens ) 10 percent should be good enough to get your phone back to stock though, i did it at 7 percent not to long ago, you just cant play around you have to click and run and get it done so it does not die. then if it dies after at least you are stock and can just turn it back in. but to be honest for a charger problem i VERY SERIOUSLY doubt they will be looking at Software and roms. thast a defect, and i think they will just do a clean swap----JUST LET IT DIE so they can not turn it back on in the store..lol
Ya could have a derpy battery and the phones fine.

Yeah, I have tried three chargers with no luck. Haven't tried a PC yet but will after work.
So if I'm getting the lightning bolt charging symbol, odds are it'llbe the battery rather than the port?
take it to best buy or an at&t store....and just say, hey i think i may have a bad battery do you have one i can use to see if my phone will power on and recognize the charger after it is plugged in. then you will know, unless you have an extra battery just laying around.
I had a similar problem like this before. Try charging with the phone off.
OR
If you want to troubleshoot and isolate the problem, try getting an external battery charger and a spare battery.
If you charge your stock battery and it charges with the external charger, your phone may be the problem. If not, then it's the stock battery.
And with the spare battery, try charging it via phone charger.
These are the possible ways I can think of at the moment. Hope this helps!
I just got my phone yesterday, and the Samsung charger was working fine until this afternoon when I noticed that the battery was going down even though it was plugged in. I tried different usb chords and different wall sockets, but nothing worked until I switched to my old HTC Dinc charging adapter.
However, now it will only charge for 30 seconds. It will only continue to charge if it's connected to my computer.
I have the GT-N7100 rooted with stock rom
Anyone have an idea what could be causing this?
Edit: After some more testing I found that the charge light stays on if I plug it into the wall while it's turned off. While it's turned on it still only charges for 30 seconds though. Could that mean its a software issue rather than a hardware problem?
Edit 2: I just did a factory reset and the problem is still there, so I guess I will return it for another unless someone knows how to fix this.
Try a different cable first. I've had problems with mine, so same could be yours.

Did you use the charger and cable provided with the box?
Did you root the phone yourself, or was it already rooted when you bought it.
Seeing as you've bought it yesterday, and you're new here, my beliefs are you probably bought one pre-rooted, and as such, perhaps didn't come with all the official gear.
What does 1 post have to do with newness? A lot of people don't post unless something is really bad(charging for only 30 seconds) and just read.
OP sounds like you need to Odin back to complete stock, not just factory reset from phone.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
The charger that came with the box seems to be dead. When I plug something into it nothing happens. It only worked on the day I got the phone.
I got the phone from newegg and rooted it myself. I'm not new here, this is just my first post. I don't usually post unless I have something to contribute, or I have a problem I can't solve on my own.
I flashed back to complete stock firmware (no root) and then did factory reset again, but the problem is still there.
I also noticed that even though it's charging when powered off, it only charges VERY slowly. maybe about 1% every 20 mins.
I can't really think of anything else to do for it, so I'm going to see I newegg will let me exchange it.

I see the Dinc charger is an 1A charger.
I had random charging issues when I used my 1A chargers from my Mytouch 4G.
Every now and then the screen would turn on and the charging would stop. Mostly happened at work for some reason.
I bought better (i.e. higher amperage) chargers and haven't had the problem since.

Thanks, I didn't know that. That's a good idea. I'll go get a new charger and hope that works.
This is why I use a wall battery charger and just swap out the batteries. My rezound had a charging if CWM was used as recovery. I 2nd or 3rd the full wipe and return to stock and start troubleshooting.
@ChodTheWacko
Thanks a lot man. I just got a new 2.1A charger and it seems to be working fine now.
hi
I have a desire hd, and it will only stay on if it is connected to the charger (charging)
little bit of back ground
root DHD
running android 2.3.5
htc sense 3.5
software ARHD 7.2
kernel. 2.6.35.14 [email protected] #66
battery fully charged and charges, battery cal has been complete a couple of times
when I switching the phone on without the charger connected and it boots up to the white HTC logo and then turns self off,
whilst charger is plug in, it will stay on as normal..
different known working battery exchange and problem still persist
try flashing different rom problem still persist
if I boot into the bootloader without the charger it will boot up, and stay within the bootloader for as long as I need it to.
very frustrating when you have to have the phone plugged in to be enable to use it, unless the phone switches itself off, I have researched and tried a couple of most things, but problem still persist.
any help guys before I do the early upgrade from my provider
thanks in advance

Can we assume youve wiped the battery stats in recovery? Have you tried doing a proper full wipe? If so then withput any other info I can only assume the voltage being provided by the battery isnt great enough to keep the phone powered once the cpu kicks in to boot the phone. Booting recovery likely uses less cpu and therefore less ampage. A cheap 99p battery off of ebay should answer weather or not your battery is to fault.
My friend gave me his HTC One X to fix (PJ46100) and he said it has been dead for months. After a few diagnostics, and about 30 mins on charge and 10 mins in my PC, it isn't connecting to the PC, I have no word from ADB, the phone itself has no LED light showing, no vibrations, nothing. My aim here is to get it on at LEAST in fastboot/recovery mode. I have never used a HTC One X but being addicted to my 4.3 Desire, I know how the usual HTC fastboot works. I know its power + volume down but is there any other way? I remember my Desire was Power + back button, EVEN though everyone online said it was Power + vol down.... Does the One X have another method?
My mate wants me to get his photos off it, and thats it, its mine
So yeah, any word on what it could be?
Doing loads of research, its a 70% chance of being a battery issue and a 30% chance of the board being dead.
I am not afraid of taking this baby apart so go ahead and ask your questions.
Thanks guys.
(BTW - I may be posting from another account in my replies....)
Hi there, I also have the same problem as yours. No led when charging, not detected by pc, its basically a paperweight. I also had done my research and I can conclude mine is a board issue since the problem occurred after transferring some files from pc and the battery is perfectly fine then. If you believe battery is the culprit, try put the phone in a sealed bag and put it in the freezer. It might bring the battery alive. I have took mine apart and I noticed that during charging, the board will be warm and same goes to the battery. This would suggest the phone is taking the current from the charger.
same problem here
I've revived dead phones where the only issue was that the battery had lost so much charge that it wouldn't charge via the phone's charging circuit e.g. Desire S and One V. Removing the battery and charging directly using another device solved it both times. Got to be worth a go. There's guides on removing/replacing the HOX battery on XDA. Just gotta go carefully!

Hi there dude.
I just replaced the battery, and yeah. Even without the charger, the board went warm for about 45 seconds. Charging does nothing, even with the new battery.
So I am guessing its the board.
Ouch.
This isn't even mine. My mate had this collecting dust since it broke about a year ago and he asked me to see if i fixed it.
His dad wanted some pictures off it, so I guess they are out of the picture (pun not intended, but eh.)
Anyway, do I buy ANY board or is there a special board for this model number?
eBay brings a few up when searching "HTC One X".
Cheers guys for the replies
I had tried charging the battery using the external charger and after connecting it to the board, it became warm and after few hours, it subside. I checked the battery and the voltage is 3v, the minimum discharge voltage. So i can say that the board suck the power and change it solely to heat. Is your htc one x tegra or snapdragon version?
