Sideloading
Brandon Miniman on pocket now is saying he can sideload an app without registering the device.
1. Windows Phone Development Tools
2. Zune Desktop (Windows only for now)
3. A Windows Phone 7 device (or, you can use the emulator)
...
in the comments:
Commenter: "You fail to mention for this to work your phone has to be registered as a developer device with the marketplace. You can't just take any phone and deploy software to it with this utility."
Brandon: "Hmm, I don't think that is true. I'm using a device that will soon be on AT&T...and it worked just fine."

Edit: Messed up in title...should be non registered phones. not dev phones
Unless MS has changed their policy on side loading, the commenter is correct. You definitely have to register and you only get 3 per account.
How is the sideloading done exactly? There may be a way around it.
The person who wrote the article was wrong and he updated his post. He was on a prerelease phone that was already registered with a developer on the marketplace.
On the other hand, I'm confident that someone will find a way to "jailbreak" the phone to allow e.g. Sideloading.

Yes I've tried searching.
I've tried to update with and without the data box checked. Wifi on and off. Is it disabled and ROMs and radios are done by htc? I'm so confused. I was born yesterday so I'm new to technology.
Connection to the update server is not available. Check your data connection settings and ensure the device date and time are correct.
Result Code:
80072ee7 (seems to be an error used by windows in general and not just mobile - mentions some static ip stuff for vista but I don't think you need that kinda stuff with a phone)
USA, T-Mobile, dunked-in-coffee color
Help please
Windows update not working is normal. I think carriers must support it for it to work and I don't know of any carriers that do.

Thanks. That means I have to figure out how to manually update through HTC's website or are there OTA updates like with android?

Traditionally, updates to Windows mobile devices are done via ROMs that you download to your computer and flash via a USB connection.I think some kind of OTA updating is possible, but I doubt of t-mobile will support that.

Well I also have the G1 from t-mobile and that has OTA updates, but that also doesn't allow tethering while for some reason winmo phones are apparently allowed to tether 24/7, so who knows.
I forgot to mention that my phone seems to be going abnormally slow and not reacting at a reasonable speed. I have no idea how I left that little nugget of info out since it's the reason I'm trying to update. I saw the MMS +international and a ROM update on HTC's site, but my versions are newer, so I'm not sure what's up (and I'm also horrible at navigating to info I need). I always go through all the settings when I get a new piece of plastic and I can't seem to speed this baby up no matter what I do. It seems to be at its worst in IE, with or without lots of stuff on the page, and besdies that it just doesn't seem as fast as it should be. The phone's only new-to-america, right (as in it's been out in other countries)? And winmo's been out for decades, so I don't think that's blamable on it being "new".
Man I'm horrible at finding stuff. I had that page with the updates on htc's site and now I can't find it again. I checked the online manual and it talks about windows update like it works too, but maybe that part is just part of the default windows mobile manual. I'M SO CONFUSED
Posting from my phone now, it took about three minutes to get down to this phone from the main forum page, and when it locks up I can't click menu or anything and yes the page was done loading and no I don't know why at 5AM I remember details I shoulda posted back at 5PM. Instant messages and texts also don't show up in order and some take literally hours to show up at all. My G1 and my cousin's sidekick both work in this location so I don't think it's a connection problem although I do get errors about not being able to connect to certain things but I have no idea what it means. One is like 'can't dial blah blah' but I'm not calling anyone.
I've never really had a good experience with windows mobile but I doubt this phone is actually really THIS bad. But, there's also nothing really pointing out a direct relation to this being a software or hardware fault.
Actually I'll post this then I'll post my version info maybe I'm not up to date
I can't copy paste this stuff? This is gonna suck
ROM ver.........1.20.531.4 (51986) WWE (this a limited edition wrestling phone or something?)
ROM date.......06/08/09
Radio.............3.45.25.14
Protocol..........61.27T.25.23U
I think I typed that all right. Is that up to date? I can't quite figure out htc.com, hell I can't even navigate my own site
I also can't seem to switch to transcriber or anything other than the default on screen keyboard
Hi buddies,
Is there any one know that how many windows live id can be used in one WP7 device?
Yes, I know one windows live id can use 5 devices, you can find this limitation from Zune desktop -> settings ->Account -> Computers and devices. If you have more than 5 WP7 devices you should delete some from this place.
Now I have a WP7(LG GW910), I can binding a Windows Live ID in this phone. And all the other windows live related functions(contact, email, pictures, canlendar and so on) work fine. But always got a message "Can't get this info right now. Check back in a little while." when I click the "install" button in APP's detail page. The apps also can't be installed from Zune PC software. I checked the devices list from "Zune ->settings ->Account -> Computers and devices", and this phone did not here.
I remeber that my friends tried to download app from another WP7 device, he got a message said that cannot registry the marketplace account(his live id is first used in his WP7 device, and never have a marketplace relationship) due to the device binded too many windows live id.
I guess my WP7 device met the same issue, there are too many people used this phone before me. So I cannot use marketplace now. Is there any one know this limitation and how to resolve it?
try performing a factory reset (settings > system > about > reset your phone)? I was wondering how MS would do this. I'm presuming it's part of their theft prevention that it does tightly couple the windows live ID with the phone, but i'm not sure in your case what you should do. but a factory reset is probably a good place to start.
Normally you can change a device's Live ID once a month (so if you have 5 devices you can exchange one every month). If your device has been connected to multiple live IDs since it was bought you might have to wait for that time to expire before being able to download from the marketplace.
Not sure on this but the one month policy occured somewhere and it's the most plausible cause for the issue if other people used the phone before.
Hi guys
i've run (Successfully I think) the Chevron utility, and used Tom to install Touchexplorer, XBMODDeployer and Connection Setup but I still can't buy/try apps from the marketplace and get the following error:
can't get this information at the moment. Check again in a little while

Connection setup ran ok and I can browse the web.
TouchXplorer: "Has been revoked by Microsoft"
XBMOD.Files.Deployer "has been revoked by Microsoft"
Does this mean we can no longer access Marketplace and MS has got wise to this route?
(Time and date set correctly)
Re locked unit
Hi Monty,
Having played a little with Chevron and WP7 on an HD2 i can tell you that your device has relocked (it will do this every time you sync with Zune) you need to either apply the reg fix to stop it from calling back to MS or simply put the unit into fight mode before you connect to Zune.
The application revoked message will be seen once the unit has been relocked, however once you re unlock it all sideloaded apps will again be available for use.
To enable the live services (marketplace) you will need to apply another reg hack to fool the device into sending an ID from a HD7 to the marketplace, you will also need to activate the services by getting a key from MS.
All relevant detail for the above processes is documented fully in the stickies, just read through it and I'm sure you'll be fine
Kind Regards,
Creamy
To prevent re-unlocking, visit this thread: [HTC] Prevent WP7 from Relocking.
To activate Marketplace, visit this thread: [Confirmed working]HowTo actvate your wp7/HD2 Live services.
Thanks Creamy, your right... it took me some time to figure it out but I did in the end.
TheSecondsFade - the problem is, the info is spread out all through those stickies which means that people keep reposting the same questions, four pages on!
Somehow, this all needs to be scrapped, put together properly and a proper FAQ put together. I'm guessing a MOD will need to do that?
Verizon said they cant give me any information, 2: Microsoft signed off and just left me hangin (in other words they didnt answer my questions) 3: I bought a new phone and I still have my KIN, so...I can start being risky because i dont care about that phone anymore. I get my laptop (my mac) back soon and that means i can start hacking into the device.
All the best,
Kinuser1
Well........ this is quite the predicimant we have. Mabey we should hack a microsoft computer and get the infromation with a penetrator or brute force virus. I have a good program called BurpSuite. If someone got me to an area where we needed an access code I could get it. Alos we would need a Microsoft computer and a Microsoft Server and Network hook up.

Just a thought. lol.
hmm...
its possible to do this but not in a way that microsoft wouldnt be able to track us down, but i wish they couldnt. things like tis would be a lot easier.
Heres how we would do it:
1. Get an old laptop connected to the mictosoft network.
2.Download what we need from the network.
3. Disconnect from microsoft network and download info to a flash drive.
4. Destroy the laptop(untraceable now).
5. Congrats we have KIN info!
You would also want to use gloves when using the laptop so anti-fingerprint too.
I wonder if we can collect money and pay them to give it to us.?
Much to my surprise, I got a virus alert this morning on my laptop. There appears to be a virus coming from the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit 5.3
Unfortunately, XDA wont let me post to the actual thread of the toolkit so I have to post here.
Anyone else getting this virus ?
If you want a screenshot of the virus alert then let me know as I am not allowed to post "external links" even pics because of some rule on XDA.
I'm sure it's a false positive, what AV are you using?
There's no virus in it if you downloaded it here.
It's either a false positive or you downloaded the file from somewhere else and that website/file contains virus.
Well, I downloaded it from the link in the forum HERE.
It most likely is a false positive so I am trying to find out if anyone else has received this notice.
I am using McAfee (yes i know but its a work computer).
Thanks for the help!!
It would help if you told us what file it thinks is a virus.
I use Norton and when I've downloaded the toolkit it would pop up with some stuff, more or less just asking to verify if I felt the file was safe, since it pretty new and has a small user base there isn't much to go by for the virus scanners. I approved everything on my PC with it.

It would help even more if I could post the pic but since XDA won't let me...
First, it came up with Toolkit.exe was tagged as a Trojan and deleted.
Then it came up with another alert that modssection.exe was tagged a Trojan and deleted.
It does not tell me what Virus it could be only that their engine Artemis! has tagged it as a known trojan.
Malwarebytes is still running so far found 3 objects but can't tell what they are until the scan is complete.
Well if it concerns you, root manually. I don't like rooting toolkits anyway.

Well, I am sure if it really is a virus it would concern more than just me. I do agree that manually rooting is probably best. I had used it because it was a quick and easy way to install the drivers on a touchy machine.
I will post the results of Malwarebytes when it completes.
Not a virus ...
It's not a virus!
Anti-virus programs work primarily in two ways.
1) They know a potential threat directly, and block that program from causing problems.
2) They "think" they know a threat, and block a program based on historical information.
Your situation falls into number 2. Many programs could be completely innocent, yet be flagged by an anti-virus program. All the program is doing in case 2 is attempting to recognize a piece of code that it knows has also been used in real virus programs. When it sees this piece of code, it "thinks" the program is a virus, flags it accordingly, and let's you decide what to do.
Unfortunately, as I said earlier, innocent programs could contain this piece of code purely as part of their program, without any malicious intent.
Anti-virus programs are regularly up-dated with tens-of-thousands of these pieces of code, which are designed to help identify a virus. The operative word is "help." They don't actually determine it to be a virus, in the case of #2, they simply flag it as having information that was previously used by an actual virus program.
I hope I was clear enough.
Peter
Addendum: Here's an analogy ...
1) John has a history of criminal activity
2) John goes to a store
3) John robs the store.
Now let's look at these three points ...
Item "1" is method "1" in my previous explanation. The AV program knows that when it sees John, flag his actions as a virus.
Item "3" is also method "1" because the act of robbing a store is bad, so the AV program flags that action as a virus.
Item "2" is different. It falls under method "2" in my previous explanation. All three pieces of information are "fed" into the anti-virus program. One day the virus program sees the action of someone going to a store. It flags that action because the last time someone went to a store, there was a robbery. However, we all know that people go to stores every day without robbing them. It only flagged that particular person because their behaviour was similar to another person's behaviour who robbed a store.
You then have the option of allowing that person to continue with their daily activities because, in reality, you know they won't rob the store.
Better?
I had something similar but for the Viewsonic GTab. I don't know if it applies here, too, but when you're using exploits to root, the AV program picks it up as malicious, which is a true positive since it IS an exploit, but one that you're aware of and authorized.
Of course it shows as a virus. The toolkit is designed to hack your phone. Your AV has no way of telling if you plan on doing it yourself, or it's malicious...
Try installing a key stroke logger. Your AV will no doubt warn you about that also...
Uh...
Nexus devices don't have to rely on hacks or exploits and if a toolkit is using one, it should not be used. Tolkits for it are just holding your hand and doing he steps for you.
True, but the toolkit contains batch files and scripts which push files, which is exactly what AVs look for...
I wrote a toolkit for the N1 and my PC started to flag it as a virus pretty much as soon as I had saved it...
Only started happening today (had this on my pc for months if not a year) but yeah, AVG is calling the following files a Trojan. See pic.

this is normal, just ignore it dont tell it to clean it. If you read this thread youll see others see it too and there are explanations
I thought the instructions say something about disabling your anti-virus to make sure it functions properly? Or am i smoking? Or did i just assume that?
Edit: just checked, and yes, there is in fact a NOTE in which it states to turn off your antivirus because its an unsigned and unrecognized by microsoft...
