Slide Root Quick Question - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im planning on rooting the Slide tomorrow and was wondering if I could keep the Stock rom and just install SU to have a rooted stock rom? does anyone know if this is possible? and does anyone have a flashable zip with Su and goodies in it?

when u do root u do keep the stock rom. its not like the g1 where u had to flash a rom. on our phone u don't have too.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App

There are a couple custom roms that are basically the stock rom rooted, and maybe just s few extras.

Hey I tried CR's new OTA rom but I can't seem to delete any apks from /system/app. Makes me feel like im not rooted

Did you try doing it from recovery or when the phone was booted? I've always done it in recovery, mounting the system partition, and then launched adb shell.

Yup I just learned I had to do that last night, if I could ask though, Why? Its not like this on Droid, Eris, or Nexus that I've used in the past. Is it some sort of Lock HTC has put in?

That's a good question and I don't know if any of us has a definite answer, if we did I'm sure some one wuold have figured out how to bypass it (not the overlay method). It's just how HTC or T Mobile set it up *sigh*
For now we have to do all system writes via recovery

This is what has kept me from rooting. I loved having the freedom with my G1 to do what ever I wanted when I rooted but its almost like even after rooting the slide your still not really rooted. You can get SU but if you try to delete a system app from the terminal emulator you cant. Once we have true root status I'll probably root.

I am pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that we still dont have a "true root". The /system folder is set to read-only or something along those lines when not in Recovery.

Yeah, it's one major thing I hate, would be nice to have rw access on /system while booted - without creating sym. links or doing an overlay. Damn you NAND!!!

[ROM][11/09/2010] Desire Z Sense on the G2 via HBOOT (r2)

This is an hboot flashable version of the Desire-Z ROM built for the G2. If you're rooted and know what you're doing with hboot, read on. To install, rename the download to PC10IMG.zip and place it at the root of your sdcard, then reboot into hboot. It'll flash ONLY SYSTEM and BOOT. I'll post more details shortly but everything I am testing works. Sorry for the crappy picture, I am frantically typing to make things happen.
http://twitgoo.com/1qjp6v
Quick overview (this is way below my normal release quality but I've not had much time and am rushing a bit):
Pre-rooted with Superuser from ChainsDD.
Busybox installed in /system/xbin.
Removed apps to allow the ROM to fit on the G2:
AdobeReader.apk
amazonmp3.apk
FlashLitePlugin.apk
FlashLitePlugin.odex
install_flash_player.apk
Maps.apk
Quickoffice.apk
SoundHound_Freemium_2.1.2b.apk
Stock.apk
Stock.odex
teeter.apk
teeter.odex
YouTube.apk
Most of these apps can be installed from the Market. Everything else is completely stock as it exists on the Desire-Z.
THIS IS NOT MEANT FOR JOE AVERAGE USER. PLEASE USE WITH CAUTION, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE. IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HBOOT FLASHING THEN STEER CLEAR UNTIL WE HAVE A FUNCTIONAL RECOVERY.
LINKS PULLED AS THIS ROM IS NOW OBSOLETE. Visit the following thread instead:

Enjoy!
FIRST i hope.....
downloading and flashing now
Would i be able to root it after flashing it with the current g2 method ?
Bring virtuous to the g2 please
yay... this is all I wanted
also thank you!!!
Thanks for this i'm downloading now
Absolutely awesome. Thanks so much for this.
So if we're already rooted should we just install visionary to get root first then lock it in?
This is going to be fun...
nice job, but damn work. i just got home and was planning on doing this, so u beat me to it ...
did u modify system so it would fit on g2 partition?

That's exactly what I did. Uploading another version now which has less removed and is pre-rooted.
rmk....Ive been following what youve been saying about the rom on irc since sense 2.0 on my g2 is all i wanted.
could you possibly post a "change log" which would just list things that youve removed from the rom that people might want to know (search app, etc).
Also, is the rom working as fast as the g2 worked or is it like when we first put sense on the g1?
Third to last question, in case something goes wrong with installation or if I want to go back to the vanilla, is there a rom I can flash to go back to vanilla or am I stuck with desire z rom until someone makes one? Also do we have to clear data/cache like we normally do before flashing another rom or what?
second to last question, by installing in hboot, you mean rebooting into hboot then going into recovery to install or what do you mean?
Last question, are the keys mapped correctly or are they desire keys?
Please answer these questions, I want to make sure I know what I am getting into before I plunge. Thanks for all the work!!
P.S - sorry for all the questions.

Very cool, glad to see somebody putting a better firmware on the G2. Hope to see rooted version soon.
Also my overclock carry over if I install this firmware?
And a complete noob question probably, sorry. Will all my apps carry over?
I'm on it right now and it's pretty awesome!

the g2 overclock will be lost when flashing the z boot img. however if u know how to compile from source here is a oc and voltage changed boot that will work on sense

[Q] Problem with adb remount

OK I know this problem has been posted hundreds times before but i've read several of them but still can't find out what i did wrong. SO: I got my G2 rooted with S-OFF as i looked in the bootloader. I rooted the phone using rage method. So if i have my S-OFF that's obviously that i am rooted right?
And I definitely have my adb set up right cuz i could not root my phone if i didn't have adb set up. The question is Why every time I try to do adb remount, it will keep saying remount failed operation not permitted.
Even when I try doing adb shell and su it would say access denied too.
Just a little frustrating, What can i do to fix this?

I am not %100 if this is your problem but i think you need ENGINEERING HBOOT
to run adb commands ,you can do it by reading the wiki http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...Z.2FG2.2FDHD.29_-_OPTIONAL_and_UNNECESSARY.21
But if you want to do it be very very carefull becasue if you do it wrong you will brick your phone and there is no way back
S-OFF is different from having your phone rooted, so it sounds like your rooting hasn't worked. If you have S-OFF and the eng hboot, you could use fastboot to flash Clockwork recovery and then install a custom pre-rooted ROM.
Or you will need to go through the rooting procedure again to see what has gone wrong.

If that's the case that my phone hasn't been rooted. My rom manager worked. I flashed clock work successfully and I did checked that I had it by rebooting into recovery. I even used n1 torch high brightness to make sure I was rooted. Then extra step was asking su in my terminal emulator too. But I still had hboot.img tho. Should I do an engineering hboot ?

Should fix any problems with mounting, heres a link for a stock rooted rom, so she wont be able to tell the diffrence, also since you can boot into CWM recovery make a backup of your current rom before flashing this:

The ADB remount command requires the ro.secure property to be set to 0 (even if you are rooted). If you want to remain on the stock ROM, flashing the linked ROM will do it for you (and is way easier than doing it yourself manually). Most (if not all) of the custom ROMs will set this property for you if you wanted to try others as well.
Thank you guys very much. I never faced this problem before since my n1 was rooted and flashed rom using the phone not adb our anything related to computer.so thanks guys. Case closed. Happy me lol

Installing new update with s-off?

Is it possible to install the new update with s-off. I have a stock rom and read the new update supposed to fix the battery threshold and I like the look. I know its not rootable yet but ive been reading some have been successful and just put amon ra recovery on it.Anyone know?

You can just get the rooted version of it on this site if you do the ota you will lose root and so far there is no way to get it back yet .

Why install the OTA when there are complete ROMS here that are better than what you're gonna have with stock 2.3.3???

It is possible if you're s-off with Unrevoked Forever on Froyo. I had to switch to Amon Ra in order to install the update and then reflash Amon Ra after the update. Had to update Superuser after that but after that was fully rooted on the update.
There are several stock rooted versions of the OTA available, there's no reason that you need to lose root just to have the latest update.
If you are keen on losing root though, then go for it. You can install it with S-Off just fine, and since it'll remain S-Off you'll be able to flash a recovery on there and re-root by flashing a rooted rom.
If your intent is to have the latest update but also have root, then just flash one of the already-rooted stock roms available in the Android Development forum.
To hip kat, I actually don't like any custom roms, I'm an ogee only person and I tweak what I want or need myself. To tempe, how did you get clockwork off first assuming you had it? Also I used the unrevoked3 method but since mine is sprint, it automatically does a perm nand unlock.

Well, easiest is to just use Rom Manager to flash alternate recovery, that's what I did before running the OTA. After, you'll need to do it manually. If you search here on "recovery" you should find threads that have the pc36img.zip files for both Clockworkmod and Amon Ra. After installing the OTA, turn off the fastboot option under Settings/Applications. Copy the pc36img.zip file for the recovery you want to use to the SD card, shut down your phone and then hold volume down while turning it back on. Just follow the prompts on the screen from there. After the recovery is installed you should be able to boot up and have root. If the Superuser app give you FC's search around here for the fixed superuser zip and flash it.
You can go S-on with the Unrevoked S-On tool....
I don't want s-on hip, trying to keep s-off. And thanks tempe for your help.

According to the error you posted, it's just the blockbuster app that your missing. Did you uninstall other system apps? Or just that. You need to have all your system apps installed for it to work. I'll attatch the blockbuster app for you. You'll need to install it to /system/app using ADB or using Root Explorer. If adb, do this
adb remount
adb push Blockbuster_htc.apk /system/app
adb reboot
If using root explorer, just copy the apk to the /system/app folder and set the permissions the same as all the other apps in the system folder.
Also, it would be much easier for you just to flash a rooted stock rom. Here's a link for ya. You'd just flash the rom like normal, from within recovery. It'd save you some hassle.

I don't believe flashing the radio is necessary if you're doing the stock ota, I didn't have any issues with my current radio while I was using stock 2.3.3 (or any other ROM that I've used so far)
Alright I did the de-odex rooted ota but now the problem is once booted up, I cant update the prl or profile, it gives me an error. Im re-wiping the dalvik cache to see if that fixes it but is there any other steps I should try?
Side question, is a stock rom that came with the phone or an ota update a odex or de-odex?

Getting stuck on the htc splash screen any time I try to install this...
I also am getting stuck at the HTC boot splash. I'm kind of new to the custom roms though.
I used fastboot and flashed the boot.img to the boot partition. Then took the /system and repackaged it into a yaffs2 image. Flashed the result to the system partition. Don't know if thats exactly what to do.

You just have to flash it in recovery. Nothing tricky or difficult like what the previous poster described. The instructions for flashing can be found in almost any ROM thread.

But I can edit the EPS.apk if he has this issue.

That is all he needs. The xml is already edited inside the apk to work with vzw.
Another dumb question, but do I need to install the apk through recovery? Can't get it to install from on phone

It's an apk that has to be pushed to your system priv-app folder. Have root explorer or even terminal can move it if you know the commands.

You want to put it in the priv-app folder.
Then just flash in recovery.
I went ahead and made it for you, I attached it, just flash in recovery.
