Questions Regarding Rooting - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I will be getting my Evo tomorrow. And I have some questions.
1. What are the positives of rooting the Evo?
2. Can the Evo be unrooted?
3. There seems to be alot of choices on which ROMs to use, which are best?
4. I really love the smooth a sharp look of icons and the whole interface. Can I keep this? I am not sure if I can explain it well, I just hate the blocky looking interfaces that some themes have.
5. Is this dangerous to do? I dont want to break my phone.
I will think of more questions I have. The reason I made a new thread and didn't just search for everything is so I can interact and ask more questions.
Thanks

Fair enough I guess, but to be honest you'll most likely get better/more in depth answers by searching the forums. But I'll give ya some quickies.
1. http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/129648-quick-intro-rooting-those-new-rooting.html
Some benefits are listed there. ^
2. Yes.
3. That is kind of like asking what car is best. Better to test drive a few and see what you like. CM6, Fresh, BakedSnacks all seem to be popular.
4. Yes. You do not need to change themes by rooting. When looking at ROMs, it seems you would benefit from choosing one that has Sense or even a stock ROM.
5. As long as you do research and follow directions the risks are minimal.
I'm far from an expert on this, though, so still do research.

Noob Question

Idk if this is the right section, but my question is, I have the t-mobile tp2 and I was wondering if all the tweaks and other things on this site will work with my version of it. Also how to get cracked programs and games? I know on the Iphone you jailbrake it also how do I get the clock like everyone else has and the backgrounds?

Dude,
In answer to your question, yes the tweaks will work with your phone. What you need to do it spend some serious time reading. There is a lot on this site and it should take you a while just reading before you ever actually do anything. Unfortunately for you, most people will not tell you how to do it, you need to read up on it for yourself so that you learn how it is done. There is a seriously big difference between someone just showing you how to do it and you researching it on your own. To be honest, that is the best way to do it since you will also learn a lot more about what can be done just through reading the threads. Good luck, and happy reading.

I've already read about 40 pages of things to do with the phone, if I was some hardcore enthusiast then yeah I would go that route, but unlike others I just want my phone to look nice and perform well and have stuff others dont have.
Welcome to forums,

Getting Tilt 2. Little help

I have a iphone 3gs jailbroken. Im getting a Tilt 2 for xmas. I want to know what i can do to get the phone to run as smoothly as possible, meaning is it possible to get ride of all the software that ATT includes in it? what woud be the best rom to put on it and are there walkthroughs to get that done? Also is there a site like appulous for windows mobile like for the iphone?
Welcome to forums
You have made a great choice moving from iphone to Rhodium!
1st I would recommend is to flash a cooked ROM from our great chefs, stock ROM´s are full of crap and slow the entire system.
Here to learn how to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550540
Once you know how, enter to ROM section and select your preferred ROM
Good luck and happy flashing!
And don´t forget to vote!

If you want to remove the AT&T garbage and have your device run at its fastest, you might want to try a custom ROM. If you are interested in flashing a custom ROM, directions on how to do that are here.
As for the best ROM, that's kind of tricky to decide. All the ROMs are very different, and appeal to different people. I personally like EnergyROM (link is in my signature), but other people may prefer different ROMs. I highly suggest flashing many different ROMs until you find one you like the looks of.
As for freeware sites, there are loads of them. I like freewarepocketpc, but 1800pocketpc and XDA-Developers (this site) also have many great freeware apps.
Lastly, since you're new with this device, I recommend reading the stickies (which can be found at the top of each subforum) and taking a look at the XDA-Wiki page concerning the Rhodium, found here. Now that I've said all that, I'd like to welcome you to XDA-Developers!
Keep us posted
@blopez24

Hey man! Welcome to Evo world and congratulations.
It looks like you know what rooting is so I won't go into that. Everyone gets something different out of rooting their Evos--some get headaches. I got a faster phone, better battery life and the option to try a bunch of ROMs and learning a little about kernel mods--all good stuff. Some ROMs stick with Sense UI, some leave it completely and use AOSP, that will depend on your taste.
This page gives a great rundown of almost everything you need to root, ROM an kernel mod your new Evo. Definately go through the stickies though, that's really good advice and when you try a ROM, make sure you read the OP's ROM anouncement carefully.
Remember that you when you root your phone, you're on your own--seriously. No tech support, no calling the carrier so make sure that this is really what you want to do.
I'm using Calkulin's EViO ROM and the camera works perfectly. You'll have to read the ROM's threads to find out what the ROM's shortcomings and benefits are. I used CyanogenMod 6 and the camera's not so good in that one but they know that.

Stickies are specific posts that the community voted to be "stuck" at the top of a forum because so many forum members found the info inside that particular thread very helpful. Stickies will not move out of sight, even when noone replies to them for long time b/c they are "Stuck" at the top by an Admin./Mod..

Your camera should not be affected by rooting. But you know what you might want to try before you dive into rooting? Go on the market and install some home launcher replacements like ADW or Launcher Pro, these two are the most popular but there are others. ADW has some some themes on the market, some are a buck and others free. Try these first and see if you like the way they change the look of your phone. There's tons of stuff you can do to change the look of the phone without rooting. Mess with those while you're reading about rooting.
There are ROMs that keep the factory look intact. You're going to have to explore those on your own and see which one retained the stock look because I wanted to remove Sense and yeah, it takes a ROM to do that. Myn's Warm twopointtwo I think is an improvement on Sense.

No offense dude, but do you do ANY research at all before asking these questions? Every single question you have asked has already been answered to death in these Forums. Do research, read the Stickies, use the Search feature. If you can't find the answers to your question, THEN ask.
Be a noobie, just don't be a lazy noobie.
P.S., How can you be a Senior Member and not know these things already?

So apparently you feel that there is no need for YOU to do any research before asking a question that has been asked (and answered) 1000 times before in this forum? Your recommendation to anyone who suggests you do research is to go jerk off?
P.S. You'll notice no one is taking the time to explain anything to you, right?

[Q] Feminine Themes or ROMs?

Hi I've been reading here for awhile and just decided to post on here. I'm really considering rooting and was wondering. Are there any feminine type themes or ROMs? I did a search and all I found was this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=860559 and it looks good but I'm really nervous on rooting because I don't want to brick my phone. I've read through the noob faq and also the ROM bible but I'm not sure if its what I'm looking for. Sorry if I'm confusing but I'm trying to learn more about making the phone my own. TIA!
29 views and no posts? No I'm not impatient or anything just wondering if anybody is gonna comment or help me out?
I think the reason people may have simply viewed and not posted is due to the lack of feminine themes out there. Are you looking for the latest and greatest, or simply a ROM that's nice and stable for now? Making themes for the Froyo ROM is much easier then making themes for the Gingerbread ROM. I am currently undergoing a massive undertaking of completely themed Gingerbread ROMs (as a hobby) and would not mind setting some time aside to make a few ROMs of the more feminie nature if enough people would like that.
It's good that you looked at the noob FAQ and did your research. before posting. As far as bricking the phone? There is always that chance, but the new methods for rooting the Slide are nearly foolproof now and wish it was that easy when I first rooted.
If you and/or other people post in this thread with if they would rather a CM6 or CM7 theme and how feminine they/you want it to look, I can lend some time to making a theme that is more suited to a womans taste. Do keep in mind that CM7 is experimental and has problems with a wide variety of users, CM6 however is much more stable.

Thank you so much for replying! I would like something stable without lots of problems. I wouldn't want to trouble you with taking time away from you working on something you are passionate about. But I do thank you for the offer. (if you do have the time to do so then thank you in advance) I'm gonna read around some more and hopefully see what I can find. Thanks again!
Also there is always the option to use apps such as adwlauncher, openhome etc that offer variety of themes

I've read about a few of those. I've tried adwlauncher before and I didn't like it to well (was moving between screens REALLY slow). Might try it again once I'm rooted. Thanks for the reply!
I posted a ROM over in the Themes and Apps section. Here is the link to the thread.

Hi aa,
I would be very interested in a feminine themed rom.
I currently have the SLIDE-Reloaded v1 which is in the bible by True blue. This guys really has it manned up so I had to delete a few things but what I really liked was that fact that it was pretty close to the stock rom. I had initially installed CM6 when I first purchased the phone and cannot really pin point what it was about CM6 that I didn't like.
I don't know a whole lot about this so please bear with me. Would installing another rom delete my apps and settings? To me the obvious answer is yes but I could be wrong.
Cheers!!

To be honest I did mention either CM6 (Froyo) or CM7 (Gingerbread) for the feminine themes, as that is currently what I am familiar with. I am going to make a more pink/lavender CM6.1.1 ROM in the near future as soon as I finish my newest CM7 project.
And yes, it is recomended to do a wipe before installing a different style ROM, like going from a Sense UI to a CM based ROM. You can always try an advanced nandroid restore and just restore data...

[Q] rom / root breakdown

Please excuse the question but I am a 4 month owner of a G2. Right before I bought the phone I startedlooking into the reviews for this phone which I ended up seeing things about modifying (rooting) the phone. I'm sorry to be asking aq question that may have been answered thousands of times but I do not want to act like I know what I'm talking about here. I'm in the construction business and use my phone for work and gradual personal use.
I am very intersted in modfying my phone to better suit me but I have no idea what each one of these different roots do. Are there any links out here that someone can guide me to in order to see the differences in these roots? I would like to know what each of them do in order to determine which root better suits me.
I appreciate any assistance you can offer out here. Thanks in advance.

The guide to rooting is fairly technical, but if you follow the steps (seriously, double check your typing before issuing commands), you'll be good to go. As far as the ROMs go, the list in the link I sent you is most of the more reputible ROMs and the links will take you to their threads which will detail the benefits, additions, etc. each ROM has.
