[Q] Apps will not install, any advice appreciated! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry to start a new thread. I have read the rules about posting and have searched for the last couple of days for an answer but can't find one.
I am unable to install ANY apps whatsoever and it is driving me crazy. I have an HTC Desire (obviously) and am using Pays ROM Froyo Sense v2.2 A2SD+ (updated just the other day). (And yes, I wiped everything like you are supposed to do, before and after the update.) I don't think the problem is with the ROM itself because the problems started before the update.
I am able to download apps from the market but it seems to get hung up on the installation itself. It never stops installing and I am not even getting a failed installation message.
I have gone to Settings>Applications>Manage applications and cleared the data and cache for all of the normal suggested apps and have even force closed a few. Nothing is working, even when I try to install .apk files which are located in the download folder of my SD card.
One strange thing I have noticed is that when I go to Settings>Applications>Manage applications, the amount of space being used never displays anything other than 'computing....' I know sometimes it can take a while for the size to be displayed but surely not an hour!
I have even restored the default/factory settings to see if that helped but nothing!!! grrrrr.....
I am reaching the end of my rope and would appreciate any advice offered. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this isn't a newbie mistake and thanks in advance for any help!

have you tried another rom see if the problem persists? it usuall only takes a minute for manage applications to find all my apps and i have looooooads also no problem with market, do a nandroid, and try another rom, if its still the same you can always restore your nandroid, i suggest maybe leedroid

Thanks so much for your reply! Was really hoping to avoid trying another ROM but I am going to give LeeDroid a try and hopefully that will sort out my app problem. Just finished downloading it, will flash and post back soon. Thanks again!

like i said do a nandroid, if leedroid dosent work then, you can just restore your backup and your rom will be exactly the same as it was b4 you flash leedroid

FIXED!!! Thank you so much!! Am happily running LeeDroid.

Just FYI: Usually, I have such a problem installing but I leave it (it shows nothing downloading). Upon restarting the phone (whenever), the apps automatically install.

[Q] freezing problem

Hi everyone!
first, happy new year!
I have a problem with my desire...it freezes in a way that the pulling the battery out is the only thing that helps...it doesn't respond to any button, the screen os off and I can't wake it up
it's rooted with unrevoked, clockwork recovery
tried different roms, the best for me is baadnwz dhd port...
been on that for a while and didn't have the freezing problem, then I flashed the miui..
went back to baadnwz and it started to freeze...a few times a day
then I reflashed it, uninstalled the font changer and that helped...for two days(thought that was the problem) but tonight(~36h from the clean install of the rom) it froze again...
so, I don't think it's the rom, obviously it is not the font changer...
why is this happening, has anyone encounter this before, is there a solution?
please advise, what should I do?
thank you
For what it's worth...
If you can get it back to stock ROM, then do so. Then take it back to the place you bought it and demand a brand new replacement. I would even go so far as to note/print a few pages of some the forums as evidence of the widespread problem.
If my (and many other people's experiences) on here are anything to go by, then your problem will only get worse...and let's face it, whoever has heard of a electronic non-software related problem getting better on it's own? Having read just about every available post on the subject I've concluded that no amount of flashing/reflashing/fiddling is going to fix it.
Sorry to be negative about it, but them is just the facts as I see them.
hmm...so it's like that huh?
what do you mean "if" I can go to the stock rom?
can't I flash the original rom, or ruu or something?(I don't know, never tried something like that)
but then again, I'm not sure that it isn't a software problem...I'm just lurking around to see if anyone has encountered this before and solved it....
if all else fails, I'll flash a clean rom without restorin my apps and see how it goes from there...
just my experience

In all honesty, you may be able to reflash back to stock ROM. It may well depend on what firmware you have on your phone and whether your phone is branded (mine is T-Mobile UK). I know when I originally got mine and rooted it, it was hboot 0.83. It went wrong (external speaker stopped working). I was able to flash it back to stock ROM and I sent it back to HTC. When I finally got it back after 8 weeks (long story involving HTC incompetence and bad luck/incompetence with UPS), it was on hboot 0.93.0001. I rooted it with Unrevoked and installed LeeDroid 2.2f ROM. Shortly afterwards, it started to freeze/reboot. However, everything I've read so far leads me to believe LeeDroid wasn't the cause of the freeze/reboot fault. The problem is far too widespread (just Google 'HTC Desire reboot freeze problem') for it to be caused by a particular custom ROM.
Anyway, the upshot for me is that no matter what I've tried, I haven't been able to get it back to stock ROM and therefore, can't send it back for repair/replacement.
I sincerely hope you have better luck than me.
well, I'll see how it goes..
thank you for your answers
is there a way that I can make a log or something to see whether an application is doing this or something else?
well, I think I solved my problem, and for further reference here's a post that I did in another thread where this was disccused..
trikpa said:
just to let you guys know, I don't have any more freezes
some say it's because of the sense rom, some it's the dhd rom, others told me it's the radio or the ril files....
tried all of that plus few more things and nothing...
well, it turned out to be my backup(or an app in it..)
I always backed my apps and data with my backup pro, very nice app that restores everything....but the last rom flash I did, I didn't restored my apps&data and started fresh installs...and no freezing
I don't know what exactly caused problems, but one more thing that may be responsible...I flashed "font changer" and changed system fonts on my phone...and then backed my apps...maybe that's he deal...dunno...
anyways, I'm back with a killer phone with the best rom out there - baadnewz's

Do you still have any issues with the phone freezing sometimes when charging from A/C?
Mine doesn't freeze as much as it used to since updating the RIL files but being left charging seems to upset it

OK, that sounds good. I only usually recover a few items using Titanium backup but next time that I flash a ROM update. I'll start it all from scratch and hope to get the same result as you.
I don't know, maybe it was a specific app but I don't have the time nor the will to test each one of them
I've got the same problem. Now that I read your post it makes sense.

Yes, I've solved my problem by buying a new SD card.
This time from Kinsgstond instead of Sandisk.
Hope it solves your problem too.
My phone freeze after charfing while its off. I noticed that it freezes when it says "preparing SD card". This happened twice so far

well, I did buy a new 8GB card, but it never occured to me that it could be the problem....I think it didn't freeze right after I switched cards...
for now I flashed a newer version of the rom I'm using and will see how it goes...if not, I'll switch cards again
thanks for your answer

I'm curious
Well so far I have reflash the phone after a factory reset + wipe with no app restored via backup. It is performing ok so far. Last freeze was 2 days ago. I will wear down the battery to get a chance to charge it up this afternoon. I will see if it freezes again.

[Q] Nonstop rebooting, even after full wipe/reinstall - last_kmsg inside

Hey everyone.
I know there's a couple other threads with this problem, but none of them included their last_kmsg files. It took a bunch of tries before I could stay booted up long enough to grab it, but I have one.
I'm getting a significant number of reboots on my EVO. Like almost unusable at times. It seems fairly random, although there's a slight suspicion is has something to do with the GPS. Maps has been a crash-cause before and the most recent bout last night was brought on by foursquare. (the annoying part is I had just used 4sq fine 30 minutes prior with no issues. Then, booted it up, refreshed locations and my phone was unusable for hours.)
I've done all the standard things. Fix permissions, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe data/system, reinstall the latest CM7 build (update-cm-7.0.2.1-Supersonic-signed.zip), wipe cache, wipe dalvik. I entered my google account info but told it not to sync anything. It is now rebooting less than a minute after it starts up. I haven't installed any apps at all since this most recent wipe/reload of CM7. It reboots with and without the sd card installed.
I'm at a loss here and getting incredibly frustrated. Many replies say it's as easy to fix as wipe everything and re-do it. Obviously something abnormal is screwed up on my phone and I can't figure it out.
Here's the pastebin from this morning: pastebin.com/Ki7H8bH3 (Crap, I don't post here enough to be allowed to post links. Just add the http part to that.)
And then when I got awake enough, I did another complete wipe/reload. The rebooting is even worse now, it's taken me almost an hour to get to a point I can install es explorer to try and pull another file. And when I did, it was blank.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
1. Go to the link below and download the PC36IMG.zip file for amon RA v2.3 and place it on the root of your SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
2. Shutdown your device.
3. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, the bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the easy prompts to install. Installation will take less than 10 seconds to complete. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. Go to the backup/restore menu and make a nandroid backup of your current setup.
4. Now go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it EXCEPT the SD card.
5. Go to the flash menu and flash the rom you desire to flash.
On many occasions, reflashing the recovery solved rebooting issues and hopefully, it will solve yours.

Hi dougjamal,
Thanks for the reply.
I've made some progress. Last night I had done a majority of what you suggested, with installing amon RA. I've also just formatted my entire sd card just to be sure.
I haven't tried wiping things other than cache and dalvik, so I'll try that.
My progress I mentioned is that I had CM7 up and running until I flashed a new kernel and gapps in there. So I guess I'll just stick with the stock CM7 kernel, try your extra wiping and see how that works.
Thanks!

Ugh, it's the randomness of this that has me so frustrated. I thought I had a good install again, I left it sit on the "touch the android" screen for a few minutes and it stayed on. Made it through the setup process ok. I allowed the setup to "auto-download" a handful of the google apps it asks if you want. Once they got to about 38%... boom, restart.
So I did another toooootal wipe and I'll manually install those apps one by one. We'll see...

Don't rule out a corrupt download. If you have the time, download both Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 and the gapps zip from http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. If you like CM7, you may like Salvage-Mod. It is pure gingerbread. If you decide to flash it, see whether or not you get bootloops with it.

I re-downloaded CM7 this morning thinking that might be the issue, but it hasn't seemed to help. I'll give a different rom a try probably, maybe there's something other than CM7 I'd be content with.
Whelp, I downloaded SalvageMod and their gapps. Wiped everything, installed salvage, installed gapps, rebooted.
I got through set-up, was ok for a couple minutes, then as I was going into my contacts to see if they had sync'd yet... reboot.
This makes me think this can't be a ROM issue.
Any other ideas?
Does the same thing happen when you run a stock (or close-to-stock) rom? Main reason I ask is that this might actually be some sort of hardware problem, but one of the best ways to test for that is to be running on stock software. I wouldn't necessarily suggest flashing an RUU to get to the latest official release, but there are stock rooted roms out there that you could try.
You probably went with CM specifically to get away from Sense and the default HTC stuff (that's most people's reasons anyway), but if you flash a stock rom and it's still rebooting like that then I'd say chances are REALLY good that it's hardware and that you'd have grounds for getting a replacement phone (just remember to unroot first.)
And if it stops randomly rebooting on you then you'll have at least narrowed things down a bit.

Hey jesuspgt,
I haven't tried that yet. I'll look around for a rooted stock ROM later and give that a shot.
My current status is back to uncertainty. At the moment, my evo has been sitting here fine, not rebooting, for the past hour or two. It's still the Salvage ROM I first installed (i.e. I haven't reinstalled it since it rebooted). Now I haven't really used it any, so it might go to hell as soon as I do that, but for now, it's on and only had that one (maybe two, I can't keep track...) initial reboot.
That's what makes it tricky to diagnose. I know using any custom ROM runs the risk of loosing stability and all ROMs probably produce a reboot here and there. Tough to tell if it's just a "comes with the territory" type of reboot or an actual problem.
Even though I'm sure there's some CM features I'll miss, maybe Salvage is my answer.
Thanks!
*sigh* Well I decided to try using some apps and guess what... reboot.
All I was doing was trying to play a game of Androminion, which is about as basic and not-tasking as possible, so I can't imagine that's what crashed things.
The only thing I can think of that you *may* need to do is reflash your hboot and/or your baseband, PRI & NV from within recovery. You can download it from the link below.

Excellent, I'm going to try that. My hboot is still 0.93!
Hey dougjamal,
Just wanted to drop an update. I know how annoying it is to help someone out and never hear how things ended up!
Who knows what combo helped, but I'm fairly stable now. After updating my hboot, I flashed to Sprint Lovers, did the ##GPSCLRX# trick and then flashed to the latest nightly of CM7 (63 I believe). Only one or two crashes and one bootloop since then.
Of course, as luck would have it, a new problem showed up in the form of a dead spot on my touch screen. Right about where the "Clear" button is for notifications, that entire strip across the phone won't respond to touch. I was hoping it was a nightly issue, but I switched to a different rom and the issue was still there. Looks like it's going in for a warranty claim after-all!
Thanks for all your help

[Q] Mail and Contacts problems on Reflex S 2.1.7

So i flashed my Desire with 'Reflex S v2.1.7 GingerBread 2.3.3 - Sense 2.1'
Everything works good, it's really fast, but i encountered 2 problems: (actually more, but i dealt with them..)
1. Email app (com.htc.android.mail) does not work. It Force Closes whenever i try to open it, or Sync All.
2. Contacts app (i think its HTC People in English; com.android.htccontacts) does Force Close when i do anything but watch them, or call. When i try to send message through this app it does FC, when i try to edit something, it also FC, same with creating.
Full wipe and re-flash doesn't solve it. (I restore apps and data through Titanium Backup, but it doesn't work even before i do.)
I'm new to forum, i hope i gave all info you need, in proper section, with proper title. I also hope my English isn't bad and you understood my problem.
Try posting in reflex s thread someone may know in there .... I use reflex and I don't have those problems mine has always worked well...

You are right, you cannot post there yet.
Already searched the reflex s thread for your problem?
yeah, but no one else had similar problems, some ppl had problems with other apps, but reflashing usually helped. Doesn't work for me :|
did you check md5sum before you flashed?
What sd card partition set up do you have? What recovery do you use?
I didn't check md5.
16gb class 4 card.
1.5gb ext3 partition.
recovery is ClockworkMod i think
I know you have tried already but re-download the STOCK reflex rom....
Check md5sums
Full wipes as usual...
Neo said in the thread that Amon_ra is better recovery to use but I have never had problems with CWM
I'm a bit stumped, I did have to try 3 times on 2.1.6... no reason it just never flashed right.... 3rd time it was perfect
I'm gonna try tomorrow, cause i'm totally busy today
OK. Wipe and reflash didn't solve these problems. For some reason few hours after wipe, Mail app stopped crashing, and now works! But still problem with editing and showing contacts.. still gives me FC :|
It's strange but I've read something similar in other forums with the Reflex rom, as you can see in my signature is what I have. They have always solved these problems with full wipe, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik cache and flash again.
I really works great but it´s true that sometimes trying to change the Lock-screen I have to spend several times the files to finish doing what I want.
Messages Contacts
Messages app doesnt show contacts or their images.. just shoes the number...

Do Full wipe, and reinstall the ROM
Oh blimey, thanks for replying! Feeling really panicked now... So, sorry to be pain, but do I go into recovery?
Thank You!!
Yes, and do all wipes
Yes recovery, to get here turn off your phone. Now hold vol- and power.
When you're in recovery do Full Wipe/Factory reset, cache and dalvik cache wipe.
Reflash ROM.
Btw. it wont broke itself, you probably flashed/installed something which caused this...
Oh thank you. Going to do that now.
Thank you very much. Have done it and now back on my phone!! I must have installed something dodgy but cant think what it was. Will now start the laborious process of installing all apps again....nevermind, at least I have a working phone thank god!
Thanks again!

Try fixing permissions from recovery, never had the problem but I have heard that is ment to fix fc issues
Also use titanium backup to backup your apps... so when you reflashing ROM you wont lose them.
About the market issue, try to clear cache and data for Market.app (Settings/Applications/All)
Everything working fine now.... thanks alot guys. Gave me a bit of a fright but am learning all the time!!

[Q] Updating Android Revolution HD

Hi,
I am currently running Android Revolution HD 5.1.7 on my DHD
I was just wondering with the new 6.1.1 version out, to upgrade to it,
do I simply download the file and just flash that to the device or must I first wipe my device? Or some other way?
Thanks for any help!
P.s Really sorry if this has already been asked but I had a quick search and couldn't see anything to this specific situation!
Back up all your data then flash the superwipe script, then flash the ROM, restore data
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using Tapatalk
Thanks alot,
Also once I have flashed the rom to the phone,
Can I remove the file from my SD Card to free up some space?
Its something I have been unsure about from the first time I flashed my phone,
But I should imagine you can??
**UPDATE**
I have succesfully installed Android Revolution HD 6.1.1
But I am getting an awful lot of Force Closes now,
1 in particularly when i try to go on "People" (contacts) it instantly force closes!
Another is SuperUser, and there are a few more than insantly FC as soon as I try to Open them!

1. You can but I would recommend that you keep a copy of a stable ROM on your sd card just in case you have to reinstall for some reason.
2. It seems like the ROM is corrupted.
Did you superwipe before you installed the ROM?
If you have:Check the md5 checksum of the rom you downloaded. It should be the same as the one posted under the ROM download link in the ARHD thread. If its the same you can try superwiping and reinstalling the rom.
If you havent: Download the superwipe script from the first page in the ARHD thread, superwipe and reinstall the ROM.
Also make sure to backup your phone data before superwiping because everything will be lost. Also don't install any mods untill your device has completed the first boot after installing the ROM.
to be honest i had issues with arhd 6.1.1 when i flashed it too. not the same as yours but constant. not everybody seems to have them though and others say it has something to do with the overclock daemon. i believe there´s a patch for it though on the 6.1.1 developers thread.
i didnt bother though i just moved on to virtuous unity 2.39 and have had no problems, really smooth sense 3.0 rom. i´ve been planning to try out a non sense rom next but i really like this rom so i´ve been putting it off for a while now. i even put the beats audio patch on it a few days ago and i gotta say its pretty good even on stock htc headphones
planing to update to arhd6.1.1 too, but have ardh3.3 and clockwork 3.0.0.6. which clockwork is ok (mean which of the newest)?
I did use superwipe and i checked the md5 and it was all good!
I re-flashed the rom and now its ok
I have found out what was causing it!
It starts happening again every time I install google+ 2.0
The new version of the app that has recently been leaked on androidpolice
(Would include a link but im not allowed yet)
And the reason it did it straight from the start the first time is because, before
doing anything else, I restored all my app via Titanium Backup!
If anyone else has this issue or could try to install the app and see if it happens
to them or could figure out how to fix it, it would be great!
(Don't worry about installing it, uninstalling it stop the force closes straight away)
did you try just restoring just the app, but clean without the user data. i did that first time i flashed a rom and it caused all sorts of problems. so i reflashed and restored the apps one by one but just the app, no user data, and stopped having problems

Hi,
My first post
Any idea does this superwiper clean the radio as well? Does the order matter - first wipe, then rom and finally radio?

Superwipe doesn't effect the radio, and yeah that order you said is the way I went about it, but I also think you can do radio before rom too!
Update from 5.1 to 6.1
Maybe I haven't looked hard enough or maybe I am simply too tired...
Are there any specific steps from updating ARHD from 5.1 to 6.1? I can't seem to find any info about it.
Also, flashing the 6.1 over the 5.1 will it reset the way my screens/widgets are set while on 5.1?
Thanks.
