Hi to everybody, I got a rooted Desire and the camera it's not working, when I run the camera app i'm just getting a black screen.
I don't know why, I tought it was about the ROM I was using (it was Auraxtsense), then I tested OpenDesire, LeeDroid, and now I'm using a root stock 2.2 ROM but neither of them let me use the camera.
I'm using the radio 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 but I've also tried the last one I found here, the 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14 with no luck.
Now I have the next:
HTC Stock ROM 2.2 2.10.405.2
Radio: 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
kernel: 2.6.32.15-g6a358a9
In case that it's a hardware problem, I remember to read somewhere here that it exists a program so you can test your Desire hardware by typing a code, does anybody remember it?
Thanks in advance and thanks for your help.
Regards!
Did you wipe before each flash? If not try that first.
Greets
Yes, I've wiped all the times I changed the ROM.
Download Z-DeviceTest from the market and test your camera. If your camera hardware is working, you should see it's specs listed and the image seen by the camera shown on the top left of the screen.
If the hardware is not working, the camera module could be loose in it's socket on the phone's mainboard, or (more likely) you have defective hardware (either the camera module itself or the phone's mainboard). Try to get warranty repair from HTC.
If you don't have warranty, and want to tackle some exploration yourself, here's the HTC Bravo disassembly procedure (at 2:10 you are at the point where you can remove the camera; camera removal from the mainboard is at about 5:25):

...and here's the assembly procedure:

You can buy the camera module:

Fantastic, when I run that app the phone reboot itselfs, ****.
rete, thanks for your help.

please help, my mda keeps showing this message, the camera doesnt work and the sound doesnt either, ive returned it to htc europe for repair twice, the first time they changed the mainboard, i got it back and it worked for about a minute then when i next tried the camera, the message appeared and the sound went, as in not even a beep when moving the slider, i returned it to them thinking theyd done a cr*p job but they changed the mainboard again blaming that as the problem, i know they are the ones that make it but it seems they dont actually know whats wrong with it, as twice it has worked and the same result, worked for a minute then no sound no camera, its been going back and fourth for over a month, anyone any idea's??? ive tried the obvious, hard resetting, ive not installed any software third party or otherwise.
yikes i need this to work, possible problem with the firmware?

I bet your speakers don't work either...
Try tapping the phone, I heard that happened after a bad drop...
Just...(as weird as this sounds) keep tapping it...very firmly.
Search around and see some other methods.

Hi i think i have solved the problem (at least i had the same problem and now my universal is workin)
what i did was so simple 1. downloaded user manual from xda ftp
2. disambled the device according to instructions, i took out the main camera and replaced it back.
3. reinstalled the rom. now its okey just working like before.
(it may be a camera connector issue.)

i had this once after installing a new rom, this was easily fixed with a hard reset, and then a new rom install after hard reset , i think it is more a driver issue rather than hardware.
Ok

Before doing this i made lots of hard resets and i used all wm5-6 roms available, anyways: people, before disassembling ur universal make hard reset in case it works )

TBH id certainly not recommend anyone disassembling there devices unless they know 100% what they are doing and the device is out of its warrenty.
Ok
I had the same error message.
I am sure it was NOT an hardware issue, because each time I reinstalled the OS (VM5) of my device, the camera was working fine, and won't work after the first reset.
You can see my whole story an a possible workaround here :

I installed the Tmobile wm6 beta rom that was kicking around on here and it worked ok until I installed the HTC album software and my camera stopped working with the following error
Unable to initialise camera.
Failed to set up the camera device.
Not to worry, I thought, and installed the tmobile official release, assuming it would solve the problem. But sadly not
Any ideas? Is there a way to reinstall the camera part of the software, or will it be a hardware problem?
TIA

I've seen this problem on an HTC Typhoon I used to own and it indicated a hardware problem - bad luck...
Mind you, the camera's awful on my Artemis, very disappointed compared to the lower res but better quality Wizard one.
Hey guys,
I've bought Desire Z recently and today a problem occured: when I start the camera app (either via SW shortcut or HW key) I get just backlit black screen and all I can do is to press Home.
Does anyone know a solution?
Thanks.
You're using the stock ROM, right ?
I would try a factory reset. If that doesn't fix the problem, then it sounds like it has a faulty camera, return it.
Yes, I'm using stock ROM. I've tried factory reset for 2 times and it didn't help, so I guess returning the phone is my only option.
The wierd thing is that the camera worked just fine and then it started to show only a black screen.
Move your finger???
Tried, not helping
Now when I think about it I come to conclusion that the problem occured after the last update (the one supposed to enhace camera performance). Could it be the cause? Can it be undone?
If I perform factory reset I still have this update installed (OS version 2.2.1).

Do you still have S-OFF or are you back to S-ON now ? If you are S-ON then there is no way currently for you to downgrade if you're on the new 1.72 ROM, since right now it is not rootable.
I haven't had S-OFF so I don't have now as well.
But it doesn't matter to me anymore, I'm returning the device (already have bought a new one - so far didn't update to the 1.72 ROM and camera works fine). Now I don't know if I should perform the update.
Anyway, thx everybody for trying to help.
I have EVO 4g the white one with hardware 04 and software 3.29.651.5 rooted,
I have a problem with front facing camera, when I switch the cameras it wont switch and it will take me to the rear camera always, I tried to do that on yahoo messenger but the same problem goes on and on.
I have another EVO (my wife's) with the same above hardware and software versions and the front facing camera works perfectly, I need help with suggestions about what should I do to resolve this issue.
Regards to all.
What ROM are you using?
I used unrevoked to root it and I think the ROM in it is (RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.29.651.5_Radio_2.15. 00.09.01_NV_1.77_CNV_rel).

ok, this isn't exactly answering your question, but i have a few of my own.
1: if you rooted, why are you still on stock rom?
2: do you even have superuser anymore because you ruu'ed?
3: why are you on a software that is so far out of date (months)?
4: why did you root if you had no idea what it does or how to use it?

Well, looks like it went bad hardware. You can try taking the device apart, and check connections for broken or looseness, , or take it to a shop for repair and they can do this.
It doesn't look like a software issue if you went stock and the issue was still there.

It Happened to me once before and just worked after flashing another rom so i thought it could be the same problem and tried another roms but no result
Iam not that good in taking things apart (never could get things one piece together again )
if you know a tool to check for hardware just to be sure where the problem is and repair shops here in my country are not any better than my skills
