So again, sorry for the n00bness but I am learning
How do I backup my stock kernel before I flash a new one like Hydra or King? I've been searching for a while and can't find instructions...
thanks in advance!
...
I believe nandroid backs up the kernel BUT
You can use ROMMANAGER and under Virtuous, you should be able to find the stock kernel, should you need to replace it.
Ahhhh... Awesome. Didn't know that. thanks! And I can flash a new kernel using ROM manager as well, right? Just point to the zip and go? Do a back up of course

Yes, I have seen that when you install a ROM, customize it, install a kernel, do a backup, when you restore it does restore with the kernel you backed it up with when the backup was done. You should be good with flashing the kernel through Recovery.
Always good to keep backups, as after a ROM install I backup right way, then customize the screens/icons the way I like, back up again, and so on...
Cool, thanks for the help and guidance all... <Cheers>

Just two quick questions...
1. I'm running stock 2.2, rooted. Best kernel for battery life is..?
2. If I don't like the kernels I flash, how easy is it to go back to stock kernel?
Thanks.

nanroid before..and if you don't like a kernel. flash the old nanroid. Done. ALWAYS NANDROID.
ROM Manager
There are stock kernels available for d/l in ROM Manager.
Recommend d/l one (or several you want to try) into a folder on SD, flash them to test drive until you find one you like.
Backup current (working) setup in event you run aground.
Thanks! I figured nandroid, but didn't know if it would totally revert back to old everything. Appreciation!
simple, is nandroid backup = back up and restore tool from rom manager?
thanks for the answers: )
Yes.
'Nandroid' was the name of the 1st tool that did full nand flash image backups on the G1 and it's stuck ever since.
AWESOME!! thanks for the answer very kind of you
Hope you don't mind but i'm gonna piggy back a question.
Does a nandroid backup also back up the kernal?
In other words if I flash a different kernal, find out I don't like it. Then revert my rom to a past one. Does it also revert my kernal? If no, is it possible to make a backup of my kernal?
Not at all actually I'm glad you asked that.

Pretty sure it backs up EVERYTHING, so that you could restore a phone just from that backup. Would be pretty useless without the kernal, now wouldn't it?
I need an app to backup my user data, apps and setting. A friend told me to use titanium backup but is there any other apps out there for beginners like me or is there a way of backing up the entire ROM in case anything goes wrong with my new custom ROM???

If your using Clockword mod recovery, then u can download rom manager and make a full back up of your current rom.
I'm assuming you already have root?
I am using 4EXT recovery I am just testing out the backup and restore at the moment to make sure it works but thanks for your advice, will try that if this method doesn't work

4EXT is highly thought of around here, I like using CWM as it's so easy to restore backups straight through rom manager.
Happy flashing
Ok just had a great result with a 4EXT restore. It works im so happy going flash a ROM right now lol. Thanks Everyone that helped me I dont have any thanks left for today but you will surely receive them tomorrow im out PEACE

Download the latest google factory image from here. It's good to keep a copy. Inside you'll find the stock boot.img (kernel).

Awesome, Thanx!!!!
One more question - how to convert .img into .zip for CWM flashing?
I am at work and cannot connect the phone to the workstation
I've been playing around and checking out a few ROMS (CM9 and CM10), but since they aren't fully complete I want to go back to stock. when I rooted I made a Nandroid backup in recovery. Now If i want to go stock again do I just wipe everything and use the backup I made. Still confused because I flashed kiss kernal. Will restoring remove the kiss kernal?
No need to wipe before you restore your backup, and it will install the stock kernel also

No... restoring from nandroid will not removed the flashed kiss kernel.
You need to flash a stock boot.img first before nandroid restore or you can flash kiss kernel that is meant for a sense rom first. Without reflashing kernel, you'll be in bootloop.
My bad

Thanks a lot!

I asked this in the IRC and was told you would need to flash the stock ROM (RUU?).
Think its this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591059
Someone could verify.
Not sure how to tell which one you need either. Anyone know what I'd need for Koodo Canada version?

I would get the Telus RUU, but only flash the kernel (boot.img) as I imagine that even if their ROMs are different, they'll be running the same kernel.
Here's how to get the boot.img out of the RUU:
Run the RUU (no need to connect the phone, all you want it to do is extract)
Go to %temp% (Start, Run..., enter %temp%)
Sort by date to find the most recent folder
Find rom.zip in there, open it and extract the boot.img wherever you like
After that you should be able to just fastboot flash boot boot.img like any other kernel, and restore your original nandroid.

Thank you, I've bookmarked this thread for my future use
Loving the speed of CM9 since I'm assuming its mostly due to the OC'd processor.

you need to restore a kernel that is compatible with stock roms, or either the stock kernel itself. Please note, that the boot.img inside the nandroid is NOT a fastboot flashable one, and cwm will NOT flash the boot file.
Also, it is unsure, that one phones nandroid will work in an other phone, not to mention that if cid mismatches it won't even work (this is a lesson I have learned in my own faliures).

I can confirm the nandroid from other phone is working for another phone. I just tested that. Use the nandroid backup for my phone and restore it on my wife's phone. Tested with a 2.09.707.1 nandroid backup. Once reboot, the OTA update notification is there.
