i have just fully rooted my htc evo 4g and i installed evolution 8 and i love this ROM but i was wondering when froyo is officially available for the evo it will have htc sense on it and i personally hate htc sense will it be possible to remove sense completely off the Evo using a custom ROM ? i love the stock android experience i think it is the best.
It will definitely be possible to use a custom rom to have sense free froyo goodness. I agree that stock android is proving a good experience. The only thing I cant figure out is how to make the keyboard disappear when its covering something. The sense keyboard has a simple button that hides the keyboard. I'm sure I'll figure it out.
A nice unsung feature of froyo is that more of the OS is landscape friendly. The apps list and some of the settings pages are not, but the recent tasks window is for example. I wish that everything would rotate even if it was crudely done, but I would settle for everything but the home screen rotating.
A legit froyo is the missing link, I suspect, in making ROMs like evolution perfect because they should bring us a proper kernel. Slap that ***** on this ROM and voila.. everything JUST WORKS

Hold down the menu button
i use swype on my evo, and that "keyboard down" button disappointed after installing it, i've found hitting the back button also works in hiding the keyboard
Supposedly in July, but honestly, what good is a speedup if there is a 30fps cap :? I mean sure it will be good for running tasks, but I want to see the fluidity, not 30fps bull ****.
I want to get scissors cut off the HDMI connection, and go yell at HTC and say:
"I have no hdmi anymore, 30fps cap gone now plz thx"

You can also just hit the done button below the return key. It will also do it for many of the areas you have to enter text.
The only thing I would like to see more than anything at his moment is a smarter way to edit your text or select it with better precision. I give that one to Apple and the Iphone.
We need something similiar.
So I'm running the newest Fresh, 0.5.3, and I have a few questions. First, I want the vanilla dialer, calendar, and messaging. I don't doubt I can find the apps floating around, but when I tried pushing Mms.apk, it doesn't load. I'm guessing it's because of the way Fresh is signed. Do I need flipz's key in order to sign my own apks for pushing, or can I sign with a key generated on my own?
Also, I'd like to link the camera with Gallery3D.apk and vice versa, where do I begin to look at that?
Finally, I'd like the eclair style lock (with the rotating dial), but I haven't the faintest idea where to begin for that one.
I can tinker around and figure all of the above out, but I would greatly appreciate any pushes in the right direction.
Can't help ya with the vanilla programs, as I don't know how.
As for the Gallery3D, I just installed the .apk with the installer app..? Is there some further "link" to the camera to peruse the pics?
As for the default Eclare lock screen, I believe Flipz said how to do it on his site, geekfor.me
When looking for a link I found this:
http://geekfor.me/faq/how-to-use-fresh-updater/
And it appears to also walk through how to install the vanilla apps..hope it helps!
Thanks for the answer. I have the lock from flipz, but that's the hero style, I want the eclair style. Hero is working alright for now though. As for the camera link, I'm not really sure. I did see somewhere that one of the AOSP like roms got the camera and Gallery3d to connect properly (camera button to camera, gallery button to Gallery3d and such). I'm not completely sure, but I'll see what I can find out.

I stumbled upon this OLD thread and realized BrianDigital, who made the remark, had to mention this even though the last post before him was LONG TIME AGO, meaning it is already HISTORY. I'm laughing now at his remark, because he JUST HAD TO SAY IT, regardless of the date of the last post.
Ok guys, I am new to any android evelopment but i now have some time on my hand before starting a job developing embedded linux sytems.
So im sure many people are aware of blubbers menu button mod to remove the ics menu buttons.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582506
basically ,me included, alot of other people want different combinations of the keys.
For example
Back: SP->Back
LP->Kill App
Home:SP->Home
LP->RecApps
RecApps: SP->Search
LP->Menu
with the introduction of aroma installer it allows different configurations.
So with the help of the rest of the community i would like to create a mod which allows users to select different cimbinations of short press and long press functions for each of the three buttons. Also add an option to disable the ics menu button if desired.
Anyone that can five me a help to get staryed on this, it owuld be appreciated.

cheers man i do remember reading you saying that a while back. However 'no offense' I do not want to install your rom. I would like to be able to have a mod that could allow this functionality on ANY rom.
however i might actually giver your rom a go. im on ARHD 4.0 (been busy with university recently to notice any uypdates) and your rom certainly seems alot better since i last looked at it.

It'll be awesome to have a stand alone mod to do this, so we can use it with any rom, even stock rooted ones...
j4n87 in your experience do you think it's possible to do this? or the only way is cooking the mod in a ROM like yours?

...sure, would be possible. But within my Rom and with my tweaks they are fully reconfigurable....you can choose between HTC speak, recent apps or any.custom app..and for the back button also to close an app.

I really do appreciate the initiative, and just like you, I do like the rom I am running (CM9 alpha 4) but would love to be able to customise the hardware buttons as I please...
Overall, a mod would allow more flexibility to users...
Thanks in advance!
Can somebody make our camera to take a Snap when we press the power button, I'm looking for something like that for a long time but Can't find anything, and by any chance I want to use the original Camera just this mode nothing else.
Please if someone of the devs is capable of doing this I(and many others I guess) would appreciate it very much.
Just like a heads up the Camera version on i9100 on ICS is capable of doing this, but for some reason our devices don't have this option!
Thanks in advance!
Actually, I am using MS_Guru's CM9 and there is an option in settings called "Power Shutter" , which allows you to take a pic with the power button ...
AOKP has this option
Stock CM9 has the option also

******NOOB WARNING*****'
I've been searching for a few days and haven't come up with anything. I'm trying to remap my search key to have it launch my camera instead. I just rarely use it and very much miss my dedicate camera hard key. I've tried the button remapper on one of these threads to no avail there seems to be one dedicate to Galaxy S phones but when I launched that one it said I wasn't using a supported device ( I've got a Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989), and when I downloaded the other button remapper it launched just fine but when I changed the command for the search key to camera it did nothing. Next I went into my root explorer and copied all .kl files with the 217 search key that I was lead to believe was the one I needed to edit and put them on my external sd and then preceded to modify the originals from "SEARCH" to "CAMERA." But that attempt failed as well. All that did was disable my search key all together. Not sure if I was on the right track here and just missed something or if that's just a completely idiotic attempt. Either way I've just Typically failed at my noobish attempt at Remapping my search key. If anyone can help this sad and disgraced noob please let me know.
Thanks!
P.S. My phone is rooted and I'm just running plain ole ICS 4.0.3 and I'm gonna post a screens of "about phone" section incase that helps at all. Sorry if I sound like an idiot but I'm very new to all this. Just rooted my first phone a few weeks ago. So if you could keep that in mind when you reply it would be much appreciated. Thanks again

Ok, well let me start out by saying I'm a moron. Below I posted and the whole recovery thing went way over my head. Lets just say the scapegoat there was not enough sleep and being way over worked. But anyway after writing that I realized how stupid I was. So I immediately pulled my head but of my but and went into recovery mode and installed your zip from there, reported, and still nothing for my search key. Is it because I screwed the pooh on my first attempt? Read the dribble I posted first and please lemme know:
First off, thank you very much for taking the time to reply and do all this for me. After reading your post I went out and got clockwork Rom manager which also lead me to download clockwork recovery. I then preceded to click on the zip file you provided and when it completed downloading I opened it. I took a snapshot of the screen that popped up. I clicked yes leaving the box checked that the program had checked for me (just as it is in the screen shot). Afterthat the phone preceded to do it's thing and a few minutes later the phone rebooted and now if I hit the search key it vibrates but doesn't actually do anything. Did I do something wrong along the way? Again, I really do appreciate you taking the time out for me and I'll be awaiting your response. Thanks!"
Stupid, I know. But I'll assume that that's probably the problem. If I can find some time tomorrow I'll try revolving the copy of the Rom I made before I killed my search key and then do it properly, and hopefully that'll be that and I'll FINALLY have my search key camera. Thanks again!

Beautiful. Just did what you said and works perfectly. Might have even been working before I just didn't hold the button when I was doing it yesterday. Thank you so much. Was kinda sceptical when I posted that I would just get a bunch of condescending remarks, but very happy to see this site isn't like some others I've been too. Anyway though, thanks a million. This is gonna be awesome for my twins. I keep missing good photos cuz it takes that extra few seconds to find my camera. Now I'll be able to get to it in a flash. Thanks again. You're awesome.

Hello again. I just download my first new ROM, Jedi mind trick, and I obviously lost my search button camera. Since I'm not running the stock ROM will the zip file you sent me previously still work to replace my search key with launching the camera? Thanks in advance!
The keymap files are at /system/usr/keylayout/
Different ROMs probably have different files, but I guess you can find the file(s) you need to change from "SEARCH" to "CAMERA"
Keep in mind, do a backup before change anything.

Right, always sure to do that. I made a backup of all the files I edited last time. Edited all the keylayout files last time though and didn't do anything. Maybe I missed one though. I'll give it a try and edit it when I'm do though. Thanks for the info!
---EDIT---Totally worked. Actually I think I had it set the first time I did this on my stock ICS Cruz when I pressed the search key once in camera it took a pic but the problem I was having all along was I just wasn't holding it down. Typical noob right? Oh well, learned my lesson. Try absolutely EVERYTHING before posting and sounding like a moron, lol. Anhway, elessb, would it be possible for you to instruct me on how to get to my camera on my lock screen like you have it. That would just be beyond amazing.

I've got Jedi Mind Trick running right now. Its blazing fast but its kinda buggy. Was in love with it at first, but the longer I have it, the more it's annoying me. Programs seem to freeze up quite often and stall out the phone for 30 seconds or so, and it seems to be doing it at least 3/4 times a day. I've heard good things about the cm ROMs. I know its kinda off topic, well maybe not all that much since I'm interested in the camera shortcut, but is there a specific ROM you'd reccomend concerning the camera shortcut, and of course with overall functionality in mind as well.
Thanks!
