Email app: "Unable to download this attachment" - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Shocked I'm the first one looking for a solution to this problem. Search turned up nothing.
In my email app, it downloads only the attachments that are below 500kb. For any attachments that are over 500kb, I need to hit the little down arrow to download. it. I get the spinning clock and then the error "Unable to download this attachment". I've rebooted and no effect.
This is for a docx file. Another one is a pptx. I have Docs to Go and am able to open docx files that downloaded along with the email.
The kicker is that if I forward the email to my Gmail, it will say "fetching attachment" for awhile and then Docs TG will say it's not a valid Word 97-2008 file. But I can open it on my computer just fine.

Anyone?
I can't download this with Touchdown either. I can't be the only one with this problem. I was able to download large attachments via the same Exchange server on the Epic 4G and the Palm Pre.

Why do you suppose you are getting the "97-2000 file" .... ??? The answer is self explanitory man.....
Why do you think it works fine on your computer..... the answer is self explanitory......
The evo is not a windows phone.... if you cant download and/or open office 2010 docs do you find that really very surprising???
So lets start with the basics.....
What rom are you running?
What email app are you using.
Maybe tell whomever is sending office 2010 files to same them as 97-2000 file types ie: doc and ppt and xls
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

It's not a Office 2010 file issue. I can open smaller docx, pptx and xlsx files just fine. Meanwhile, I have a XLS file in my inbox right now I can't open which is 3.7MB.
I'm running Stock Sense ROM. Well, almost, it's the deodexed one. I'm rooted.
I've tried the HTC Mail, the stock 2.2 mail, and Touchdown. All give me an error of some sort when downloading larger attachments.
Like I said, I had no problems downloading these large attachments on other phones. If I can't figure this out I'm going to have to return the phone because I receive large-ish attachments all the time for work and if I can't view them on my phone that is an absolute no go.

Some more data points:
< 1MB PDF downloads OK
< 1MB docx downloads/views OK
1+ MB PDF does not download
1+ MB docx does not download
So it appears there is a 1MB threshold somewhere although I have no idea where.
And I'm not a huge fan of the iPhone but it also is able to download these attachments. I just tested them on my wife's phone.

I considered that, but like I said, I added my Exchange account to my wife's iPhone just last night and could download these attachments no problem.

Any ideas? This is infuriating and I'm not sure what to do. I'm about to try going into the store and adding my EAS account on one of the demo units to see if it does it there. I'm at a complete loss here.

I tested the Sprint Store demo unit with my account and had the same problem. I asked them about it and they told me it's not the first time they've heard of this problem, it is due to the way mail is handled in Android, and there is no fix :-( Even though I wasn't sure he knew what he was talking about, it's not a good sign.
Crap. Now what....

In the email app under settings. Make. Sure you select "entire mail" and and "always" under the attachment setting.

So I already have "entire mail" selected under mail size limit. Not sure what you're referring to on the "always" setting. I have a setting for "Include file attachment" and my options are Never, <25KB, <100KB and <500KB. I have <500KB selected.

Use Blackmoon Attachsave. It will let you save it, then view it after. I had the same problem and that solved it for me.

Thanks. So apparently this isn't completely widespread. Maybe it's a function of Android + my server? Because my server works fine with the iPhone and other people's servers work fine with the Evo.
Totally confused. 5 days to return the phone.

FYI, no fix. Contacted higher level technical support and they were absolutely no help.

I too have this problem and have been using Kaiten Mail from Android Marketplace. It downloads attachments fast even on 3G/HSDPA. But it became too buggy for me so now I'm back to the Gmail app.
Maybe try some email clients.

[SOLVED] GMail app - always show pictures?

Is there any way to get the GMail app to always show pictures, without having to press the "Show pictures" button? It annoys the hell out of me - I ALWAYS want to see the pictures!!!
Anyone got an answer for me?
Yet another bump since I still don't have an answer.
I'm now running Pays Sense Froyo rom.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
anyone got any ideas?
I want this also....please.
no you cant, its there to protect you not just from malicious code but also from illegal images ......
An honest question - how does making me press a button protect me from malicious code?
And illegal images, well I've never received an email with illegal images in it, and I think I'm prepared to take that risk since I'm an adult!
I just want my pictures shown straight away!
If the same account was able to have pics shown by default on the iPhone surely some has a fix or script or workaround for this bad idea on a Droid?
Thanks Kevin
"Show Pictures" button issue - WTF?
I am using Android 2.2 on a Droid X and I M NOT able to see my HTML emails automatically? I have to hit a "Show Pictures" button EVERYTIME?? This is the dumbest thing I have heard.
I can turn this option on in my GMail account, so we can't I turn it on in the GMail app on my Android phone?
Security? That is a lame-ass excuse, like I said, I can turn it on in my web based GMail account and GMail automatically filters 99% of all SPAM messages automatically AND IF there is SPAM in my email box, it's usually something I know not to click on it (on the phone) and when I do log into my webmail I report it as SPAM. WTF?
I solved this problem by using the K-9 mail application.
It is in the market and you can download the latest version off the developers google dev web site.
It has the setting to always show pictures.
Good luck to all.
Kevin
This has been solved now.
This post from this thread provides a GMail update that is flashable through ROM Manager or recovery.
Works a treat!
Thank you so much. I also think it pretty freaking stupid and not insecure. Scripts should always be be disabled but I dont see how allowing/placing/resizing picture is dangerous at all. There are empty spaces, that when you click them it goes to a link. It was a picture with a link attached, but now its clueless link. Its more dangerous to allow contextual boxes then pics. Downloading anything illegal without criminal intent is not prosecutable. My 2 cents anywho.
Thanks..I have updated Gmail app..The problem is now resolved.

Email and attachments

I guess nobody seems to care but I've searched almost the whole day for a solution but coulnd't find any or am I the only one who sends email with attachments other than pictures, video or audio etc ?
The big problem is the predefined set of file types you can attach to an email. This in both the HTC Email application and the Gmail application.
When you want to add an attachment to an email, you can only choose pictures, video's, audio, app share, location and document. What if I want to attach a .zip file or multiple zip files at once. No way you can do that. The only solution I found was a program called File Sender but this one only works for the Gmail application, whereas I'm an Exchange Active Sync user.
When started, the File Sender application opens a tiny file explorer in which you can choose the file you want to attach to an email. I want the same functionality in the stock HTC Email application. And no I don't want to buy 3rd party Exchange email clients. Any one with a solution or any one who can develop a mod/program/hack or whatever to bring this functionality to Android ? It would be nice to select multiple files at once no matter what kind of file type.
Thanks....
There are many apps that can solve your problem. For example install Blackmoon File Browser and you can attach any file in Gmail.
You can always change the extension of a .zip file to .jpg or similar and tell your recipient to change it back, saves you doing anything

Thanks, but for Gmail there are solutions but I'm an Exchange user so I use the stock HTC Email application and NOT the Gmail app. For HTC email app there are only paid apps which can handle attachments as it should be.

[Q] No decent Email client for EVO?

All I want is 1 email client with a combined inbox (like Blackberry). I've tried every option available. I use gmail for personal Exchange for work.
Sense client is terrible and can't do combined inbox or push with gmail.
CM6 Email.apk doesn't word wrap for some reason so everyone has to scroll right to read my emails (even shows like this in my own sent items).
K9 doesn't support ActiveSync Exchange (NO idea why not, it is otherwise perfect).
Touchdown looks like crap and only supports 1 Exchange account (no combined inbox) but it has a ton of functionality.
Droid X and Galaxy S native email.apk are pretty awesome (at least better than the Sense one) but no one has ported to EVO yet. I've tried getting the apks but they do not install, even when deodex'd. It's pretty crazy that HTC gave a Froyo update but didn't bring any of the stock Froyo functionality sense we are still stuck with Sense 2.0...
Have you tried flashing the Email.apk from those others instead of installing them?
hmmm. I will have to do some research to see how to "flash" an .apk. I guess it has to go into a zip file with a certain file structure.

Yeah exactly but if you use clockwork recovery you can flash a unsigned zip..When I was using another gallery i used the zip attached to flash it in clockwork. you could use that as a template.
How about GeeMail? I haven't tried it yet, but I see no reason it won't work.

AIR isn't available for Android yet. I know there is a beta but I'm not sure GeeMail is a solution anyway as it seems to only work with gmail, not Exchange.
Perfect solution would be K9 adding ActiveSync Exchange support but I can't figure out from the google code page if or when this would happen.
A good runner up would be getting the Samsung Galaxy S/Captivate client ported over to the EVO. I have a few coworkers with the Captivate and the client is great.

I really miss my Moment email app. I snagged the apk off of the Moment, but when i try to install it I get "application not installed".
This app can do multiple inboxes and exchanges.
We really need a good solution for evo. I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this. I guess not many people use gmail and exchange?

Something needs to be done for sure. I have two Exchange mail servers that I need to connect to. My moment did that flawlessly. My iPad can do it since I jailbroke it and ran a teeny tiny app.
I got the Evo ignorantly thinking that this was standard for Android email.
I really hope someone figures out how to put the Moment email app on the Evo.
If anyone needs the apk to do that I'll send it to ya.

Have you tried emailing the k9-mail developer and asking them to include exchange support? I've found most developers I've emailed are happy to receive suggestions on their apps. Couldnt hurt.
Isn't Active Sync something that requires a license from MS? I assumed that was why K9 didn't have it included.
I definitely want to see a better mail solution. Using exchange and gmail I have to keep two icons on the desktop to be able to go to an inbox. this should just be unified.

[APP] Updated 6 June, 2011, improved Email.apk (Gingerbread)

What is it? Originally this was a direct extract of the Email.apk from Nexus One 2.3.4; but the most recent update uses a bug-fixed version extracted from CM7. Primarily because the text prediction bar works in this Email app; while it seems to be missing from all the SGS Gingerbread Email.apks.
Update November 3: I have been using CM7 and don't see myself switching back... CM rocks!!
Update June 6: New version extracted from CM7 nightly that appears to really fix the problem where Exchange email accounts stop syncing, requiring a reboot of the phone. I've been using this build 4 days without sync problem. Relevant threads HERE and HERE
As far as I know this will only work on a Gingerbread ROM. Install via CWM. The installer will attempt to ERASE your emails and email account settings from your phone. This keeps the system from getting all goofed up due to database incompatibilities between Email.apks (Thanks nitr8 and styxx!)
I tested this under Juwe's ROM v4.2 and under Darkys 10.1 against my office Exchange server. It seems to work great.
I am not a developer by any means. What I've posted here is something hacked together out of nothing more than dumb luck. (Really, all I did was extract the APK from the CM7 nightly and modify the menu xml files to link to APK internal PNG images rather than linking to the phone framework PNGs. No actual program code changes were made by me.) If it bricks your phone and your hair falls out... sorry, but don't come crying to me. You have been warned! If this app doesn't work for you, please post anyway so I can laugh at you... Errr... I mean, so I can try to help you.
May 8th update: Some of the menu icons were not showing up properly. Spent some time with APK Manager and figured out how to add in the missing icons.
looks fun
ive tried this and it looks good and works well. The major issue for me as with all the older email apps is there is no "Move to folder" option..... which absolutely drives me nuts. I had it until I tried using the TAB email app, then tried going back but keep getting this same apk and am missing this option. Its a real pain!
Funny, I didn't even notice the "Move to Folder" option was absent!
For me the text prediction was a huge issue, and it was really my only motivator for trying it out. I'm very happy with how quick and responsive this app is. With the stock app I would get lag at different times, especially noticeable when deleting multiple messages. This Nexus version seems to delete them instantly. I also really like having the check-mark boxes present on the message list.
I haven't tried the TAB email app, are you saying the move-to-folder option is missing from the TAB version as well? Have you tried the SGSII Email app from this thread?
good plan
the option was there in the tab email app and also in the newer one of the galaxy but I cant find the apk for that! that'll teach me to back them up! I'll have a look at that thread anyway and see where it leads. Thanks for your work and your assistance.

It doesn't look significantly different. There are check boxes along the left edge of the message list view so you can quickly select multiple messages for deletion, otherwise it looks pretty much the same. The big difference is in how much more responsive it is over the Samsung client, and the fact that the keyboard text prediction bar works when using this email client.

There was a misunderstanding : Samsung app has a different landscape mode.
quick noob question. do i have to wipe anything before flashing this? I'm guessing no but want to be sure.
You need to flash the ZIP via from ClockworkManager, and it will attempt to wipe your email accounts to prevent force close issues due to email database differences between the Email.apk versions.

Thanks for posting this! I was killing myself trying to figure out why autocorrection and word prediction wasn't working on my gb rom. I installed it on my captivate running a gb rom (Serendipity VII). It works very nicely for me.
New version _actually_ seems to fix Exchange sync problem.
Thanks for the update. I had trouble getting it to connect over a good 3g signal, but it did so when I enabled wireless for the first sync. I hadn't noticed the synching problem but might not have used it long enough to see the problem. All seems to be working. This app is much nicer than the stock samsung email client in virtually every way. It is much more polished and easier to use. It would be nice if it didn't clear settings when updating over itself, but that is not a big deal.
It's a bit confusing in this thread, but I take it that this apk also lacks Move To Folder? That's a seriously useful feature and it might drive me back to stock on my Incredible just to get it back. Then, of course, I lost the ability to create private appointments in the calendar! Whee. Have you found a version yet that has this feature?

Does anyone dislike the Email on the SGIII as much as I do?

Or is it just me? Every email I open that has pictures or graphics I have to scroll to the bottom and click on "Load More Details".
I really like the email in the Nexus Roms or the CMxx Roms - they ask at the TOP if you want to show pictures and then if you want them to be shown all the time. That is what I would like to have. Any idea where/how one could accomplish this?
I have tried virtually all of the email clients in the Play Store and really do not care for them fro one reason or another. I even have $16-17 invested in a few of them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ted
I purposely use Gmail for everything. Just goes hand in hand with android. I actually freeze email and exchange apk.
Have you tried enhanced email from market?
Sent front my SGS3 Epic 4GLTE Touch
If you use Gmail, you can just press "show pictures" at the top if it doesn't show them by default. It will remember your preference for that person.
Gmail also has a better theme and is generally better than than most, if not all, email clients.
If you don't use a google account for email, I believe you can set google up so it receives email from a certain address and you can send outgoing email from that address.
My biggest complaint is that Samsung put all of the controls (reply, forward, etc) at the top of the screen which makes one hand operation a challenge. I have big hands and still have trouble reaching the controls. I replaced Samsung email/exchange with the stock ICS versions on my E4GT for the same reason. I might do the same on this one as soon as I flash a custom ROM.
